Read on for my thoughts on WWE's latest financial release and the fallout from it.
WWE released their Q2 2019 financial results:
- Wow. That revenue's even lower than predicted. Obviously it's still a LOT of money, but it goes to show WWE's not the force they want to be.
- The Network is struggling along.
- Very impressive digital growth despite the Network decline.
- I do wonder if the MASSIVE investments in talent development are starting to backfire given the drops in audience levels. They have purchased an unprecedented roster, but they can't utilize it in a way that draws money at the scale they're hoping. They need to really shift their approach.
- Well it does look like having talent return has helped some things. Dropping some underperforming live events has helped, too.
- Whoaaaa the Network has stalled.
- They really had to increase ticket prices to make up for the lack of attendance.
- WOW. Notable international attendance drop.
- They're spending a lot of money to try to make Network shows a success with great talent and it's really not working.
WWE stock surprisingly saw a slight increase after the earnings release. Many were expecting a drop, which would have been justified with those declines.
WWE did a conference call after these earnings, recapped here:
- The Indian TV deal is going to be one of their biggest revenue-drivers.
- So the idea is Vince won't be as involved in things with Heyman and Bischoff around. I wouldn't assume that means Creative. More on this in the next news post.
- Oh, wow. Looks like an important TV deal is coming in the Middle East, which will make that Saudi relationship even deeper.
- Haha I don't blame them for not looking at where these trends go.
- Hahahahahahaha WWE got dropped by Sky. They didn't make the call to move to a lower network voluntarily.
- Yeah we'll see how much of a relaunch there will be and what it will really mean.
- AMAZING to hear them discuss AEW. They're definitely concerned.
- I'm curious what USA will do different with FOX airing Smackdown Live.
More wrestling coming up.
