Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.
I hate the idea of expecting us to pay for a match, and then giving it away for free shortly thereafter. You notice that they didn't do that for Cena vs. Rock. And then there's Cena. Last night he had a war with a man who suckered the entire WWE Universe into thinking he was retired, took Cena out, etc.. But tonight, it's all fun and games and stupid inside references. This is one of the reasons that people boo Cena. Orton was the only good part of that segment. Fandango being involved is also a little silly.
Orton vs. Fandango wasn't bad at all. It made sense for the guy holding the MITB briefcase to beat someone who's rarely taken seriously.
At least the World Title match gets a segment to set it up.
Wow! Didn't see The Shield taking out Henry. I wonder where they're going with that. Henry's promo was really good (as he almost always is). At least HE sells the fact that he was in such a big match last night where both competitors were taken to the limit.
RVD vs. Y2J is also a pretty big match. It feels in some ways like RVD is already "just another guy on the roster". Maybe this is how they'll write Jericho off? He starts touring in early August.
Del Rio vs. Ziggler was pretty good, as to be expected from those two. AJ's still compelling.
Nice post-match. Big E vs. Ziggler could be good. Might be kind of tricky to book, as I wouldn't want either guy to lose momentum. Big E turning into another Ezekiel or Mason is not what WWE wants.
Now, THAT was something. The Wyatts are certainly an interesting gimmick. I care more about them than I've cared about some guys in years.
Honestly, I think I've had my fill of Zeb Colter for a little while. There's such thing as too much of a good thing. It feels like he's cutting promos all the time now. They're always good, but quite repetitive and we could use a little break from them.
Surprised that the Usos got the win there, but maybe WWE is keeping them strong for a rematch for the Tag Team Titles? They're good, but I don't think they're as good as Cesaro and Swagger. Not that how talented someone is should 100% determine who goes over.
No Sandow promo? I hope there's one after the match.
This is Exhibit A tonight of "stop-start pushing": Sandow wins MITB and is theoretically in-line for the biggets push of his career, and then the next night he loses clean. Obviously they want to keep him close to the same place he was before winning the briefcase and slowly push him towards the Title. Of course, if they end up in a pickle and need him to win the Title but he's been positioned as a midcarder at best, they'll have to scramble to make him look Championship-worthy. I also think it's kind of out of place for him to potentially win the World Title as his first championship in WWE.
Not a bad post-match with Rhodes and Sandow.
Brie vs. Naomi wasn't bad to "bring us down" a little bit in the roller coaster ride.
The Punk/Heyman/Lesnar segment was phenomenal. Very emotional, having us hanging on every word. Contrast Punk's promo delivery with Cena's. Anyway, that was all pretty good.
The "Total Divas" stuff and Cena/Khali can be justified - the very serious segment involving Heyman and his clients was sandwiched between some levity, so it stood out more.
The "All My McMahons" segment was ok, I guess. They're obviously not my favorite characters.
RVD vs. Jericho was very good, but I expected nothing less. I can't believe that both of them are over 40! And because I always do this: they first faced off in 2001. But they don't perform like they're not in their prime anymore.
That was an interesting set-up for Cena vs. Bryan. I hope they have a long-term plan to elevate Bryan.
More wrestling coming up.
