Booker back in the ring, Cena live stream, Raw live event notes, MLW marathon, new Rollins venture, and Questions on Brock vs. Shane, defining tweeners, a modern Pro Wrestling This Week, WWE honoring Kobashi, commentary rules, The Elite working WM35, Mae taking a powerbomb, least deserving world champion, WWE dropping PPVs, and WWE PPVs airing on TV

Booker T. will wrestle for his promotion on January 12, competing with Rex Andrews. That's a big opportunity for Andrews.

John Cena did a live stream before Smackdown Live's recent taping.

Ronda Rousey was not on this weekend's Raw live events. I guess Nia wants to feel that armbar again...

- Nia Jax, accompanied by Tamina, defeated Ember Moon at this weekend's Raw live events. Originally these were set as tag matches.

BeIN Sports is running a New Year's Eve marathon of MLW: Fusion, going from 6:00 a.m. EST December 31 through 1:00 a.m. EST January 1. That's impressive. Good for MLW.

Seth Rollins is opening a coffee shop in Iowa. He's busy inside and outside of WWE.

The Lucha House Party are now working Raw live events. This weekend they've been part of battle royal matches, following one of the same at the Raw taping.

For my take on the first set of yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Oh dear mother of God they just might do that. I think the match could be a fun spectacle, but I don't think it should headline WrestleMania, and definitely shouldn't happen while Brock is Universal Champion.

2. I would consider a tweener to be someone who will feud with both faces and heels. So, Becky would fit that definition right now. Now, if WWE is booking someone as a face and they're getting booed (or they're getting cheered as a heel), I would just consider them a character not getting over in the way WWE intended rather than a character positioned to be between face and heel.

3. If a network is interested in the concept and could get it worked out with those promotions, it's a possibility, but it's notable I've never heard of anything like that being in the works.

4. I'd be very surprised to see WWE honor him unless they get broadcast rights to NOAH and/or AJPW. It doesn't seem like WWE would want to draw attention to someone you can't see on the award-winning WWE Network for $9.99 a month.

5. Someone almost certainly told them to pronounce it that way or it would have been corrected by now.

For my take on the second set of yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I strongly, strongly doubt that's the case.

2. To the best of my knowledge. She was one of a kind, for sure.

3. I'm going with Arquette, since at least Russo was actually part of the wrestling business. Nothing against Arquette as a person, but strictly from a wrestling standpoint, his career lasted four months until his Raw appearance ten years later and his recent comeback. Russo had at least been part of things on-screen and in the ring longer than that, on top of his behind-the-scenes tenure.

4. They could, IF they felt it was worth losing the live event revenue and potential Network subscriptions from not doing those other PPVs.

5. Possibly, but they don't really want to sabotage the Network by doing that. It'd have to be a really good offer.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw dark match, WWE exec sells stock, Interview with Becky, Japanese Hidden Gems, SDL lineup, and Questions on so many Mania week shows, Japanese names at Mania week events, why WWE TV isn't live this holiday season, Eddie Kingston in EVOLVE, and how The Elite leaving affects Supercard

After Raw taped, Dean Ambrose defeated Seth Rollins in a steel cage to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

WWE co-president George A. Barrios sold 37,500 shares of stock for nearly $2.7 million. This isn't expected to mean any change in his position in the company.

Becky Lynch spoke to TMZ Sports about Ronda Rousey. I hope Becky's able to be the mainstream star people are hoping she'll be.

WWE Network's next Hidden Gem collection focuses on Japanese wrestlers. The collection drops the day before Wrestle Kingdom and features the following:
- Antonio Inoki vs. Larry Sharpe from WWF's Showdown at Shea event in 1980
- Jerry "The King" Lawler and Greg Gagne vs. Mr. Saito and Riki Choshu from AWA in 1988,
- Sting vs. The Great Muta from WCW Power Hour in 1989
- Dean Malenko vs. Shinjiro Otani from WCW Worldwide in 1996
- Kota Ibushi vs. Bobby Roode from an NXT live event in 2016
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe vs. Eric Young from the same NXT live event in 2016

Tuesday's Smackdown Live will feature:
- Naomi vs. Sonya Deville
- Samoa Joe vs. Jeff Hardy to determine the final competitor in the main event
- John Cena and Becky Lynch vs. Andrade "Cien" Almas and Zelina Vega
- AJ Styles vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton vs. Mustafa Ali vs. (the winner of Samoa Joe vs. Jeff Hardy) to determine who faces Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble for the WWE Championship

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I just intend to cover Takeover, Supercard, and WrestleMania currently.

Nothing to add to 2 or 3.

4. The last match I see he competed in was 2010, and I can't find any U.S. appearances, so I really don't expect that to change. It would be a big expense for someone who's seemingly moved on from the business.

5. Interesting. At the time, I'm almost positive it was announced as a USA Network call to keep ratings up, rather than a Vince call. Either way, I'm sure the wrestlers preferred having that time off.

6. The OGz are similarly not under contract to Impact, so EVOLVE could try to use them if they wanted. That would be interesting.

7. There are definitely a lot of people looking to get rid of their tickets now that they know the show won't be "All In 2," and that key names won't be there. That said, a good number of them will probably still attend, since they've already bought the tickets and it could be difficult to get rid of them.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Podcast notes, NXT special episode, Charlotte press, SDL audience, Impact calendar for Homecoming buyers, NXT name backstage at MSG, MLW set for another international TV home, MLW regular signs deal, territory star writing book, Impact audience, Cena appearance moved, Raw lineup, January 7 Raw segments, SDL taping set, and Questions on Jason Jordan wrestling, Paige's WWE future, Sunny's status, CHIKARA's status, and Quackenbush-WWE

Steve Austin's podcast is going on hiatus, with old episodes playing beginning next week.

Edge and Christian spoke to the writers of their WWE Network show on their latest podcast.

Chris Jericho's latest podcast features Rey Mysterio, Konnan, DDP, and others discussing Eddie Guerrero.

The next NXT will be a two-hour Year End Awards episode.

Charlotte Flair got press for work with Make-A-Wish.

Smackdown Live drew 1.90 million viewers for the taped Christmas Day episode. That's one of the rare times they've beaten the same week's Raw.

Impact is giving a free 2019 calendar to anyone ordering Homecoming via FITE. Impact's website is selling the calendar for $14.99, so that's a pretty decent get.

NXT's Kacy Catanzaro was at WWE's Madison Square Garden event, as she's from New Jersey. I think she's got a chance to be an important part of things down the line given her background and inherent likability.

MLW is expected to get an Australian TV deal in 2019. They're making moves!

Teddy Hart has signed with MLW. It's good to see him being successful.

Territory era star Bugsy McGraw is looking to release an autobiography in 2019.

Impact Wrestling drew 135,000 viewers for its second Best of 2018 episode. That's actually better than almost all the fresh content they've put in the new timeslot.

John Cena was not at this weekend's Raw taping. Instead he will be returning on the January 7 show. His plans really changed.

Taped for Monday's Raw:
- Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Steel Cage match
- Ronda Rousey and Natalya vs. Nia Jax and Tamina
- Battle Royal to determine a challenger for Dean Ambrose
- Dean Ambrose vs. Battle Royal winner for WWE Intercontinental Championship
- Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Ember Moon vs. The Riott Squad
- Seth Rollins vs. Bobby Lashley

Raw's January 7 episode will feature:
- John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Paul Heyman appearing
- Alexa Bliss' new talk show "A Moment of Bliss" with Ronda Rousey
- Bobby Roode and Chad Gable vs. The Revival for the Raw Tag Team Championship

Smackdown Live will air from Maryland on April 2. This was announced during a live event there this weekend.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. None. All indications are he's staying as a producer for the time being.

2. They will absolutely use her in some other capacity, and I expect she'll be on TV to tie in to her movie release. I wouldn't be shocked to see her as a commentator, but there's no indication of her role yet.

3. Of course! I hope that continues.

4. Yes. CHIKARA's a special breed, no?

5. No. WWE has just utilized him several times as a guest coach.

More wrestling tomorrow.

New Year's themed Hidden Gem, Interview with Cornette, NXT philanthropy, why Impact is switching nights, assorted injury updates, why Tozawa is working non-WWE event, ROH breaks yearly attendance record, Daniels-ROH update, Whitmer's future, ROH star gets heat, WM35 main event plan, SDL plan update, 205 Live name teasing exit, top indie name to EVOLVE, NJPW headliner signs new deal, ROH name re-signs, Elite moving on from design, big Mania book coming, former WWE star writes wrestling screenplay, WWE live event notes, and Questions on WWE content airing outside of WWE, NXT names working more live events, Pursuit's reach, linking the new and old women's tag titles, and Fandango's status

Mid-South Wrestling's 1985 New Year's Eve show is the latest WWE Network Hidden Gem. This featured a Dog Collar match between Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer and Butch Reed.

Jim Cornette is on Chris Jericho's latest podcast to discuss The Elite and more. I'll give Cornette credit for recognizing the great success of talent he strongly dislikes.

NXT stars volunteered at "Give Kids The World." WWE is doing an amazing job with philanthropy.

Impact's new timeslot was deliberately chosen so the show will follow Smackdown Live starting in October. That would suggest the show will stay at that time if it moves from Pursuit. Banking on fans wanting four straight hours of wrestling on Fridays is bold, to say the least.

Michael Elgin had knee surgery and will miss about two months. I definitely miss him in ROH.

Stardom's Mayu Iwatani suffered a sprained MCL and will miss a few weeks of action. She's worked WOH in the past.

Akira Tozawa working Fight Club Pro is a concession for NXT UK talents not being allowed to compete at that event.

Tank Abbott is recovering from a liver transplant.

Revolution Pro has lost their UK TV deal due to low audience numbers.

ROH again broke the average ticket sales in a year, with 1,200 in 2018. That's up from 1,100 in 2017. They've got their work cut out for them topping that number in 2019, although the big crowd for Supercard will definitely go a long way.

Christopher Daniels could remain in ROH as a producer while wrestling outside of the promotion. He's continuing to take indie dates.

BJ Whitmer is expected to go to AEW. He has at times been Burnard the Business Bear.

Jonathan Gresham was pulled from ROH's most recent TV taping after missing a spot at Final Battle where he was to fight off Hangman Page during the Jay Lethal vs. Cody match. He was also late for that taping. It's believed issues have been smoothed over now.

WrestleMania 35 could be headlined by Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch, as that match is still being planned. It's possible Charlotte Flair is added to make it a triple threat. That could really be amazing.

Smackdown Live is expected to air live in the western U.S. when it moves to FOX.

Gran Metalik is reportedly considering leaving WWE, possibly to return to CMLL. I don't see WWE making a huge offer to keep him given the state of 205 Live.

Shane Strickland is set to start in EVOLVE in February. He's being groomed for NXT once he's free of LU commitments.

Hiroshi Tanahashi has re-signed with NJPW for a one-year deal. He will likely have a big 2019!

Raw drew 1.78 million viewers(!) for a taped Christmas Eve show, the lowest number the show has ever drawn by a comfortable margin. I know we can only read so much into this given the date and it not being live, but last year's Christmas Day show drew 2.71 million. WWE TV is really stumbling lately.

Beer City Bruiser has re-signed with ROH through 2019. There was talk of him going to WWE, but obviously that won't be happening. He will be able to take some outside bookings under his new deal.

The Elite's Bullet Club style shirts will no longer be sold as of January 7, signaling the formal split of the two sides.

A 35 years of WrestleMania book is coming September 2019. That's a really impressive milestone.

Shad Gaspard has a critically-praised unproduced screenplay about pro wrestling. I'm curious how that will turn out.

Bray Wyatt returned to action at Raw's December 27 live event in Ohio, defeating Baron Corbin in a no disqualification match. Bray was backstage at WWE's Madison Square Garden event, but not used. He did not have a new gimmick, as some speculated.

On Smackdown Live's December 27 live event in New York:
- AJ Styles missed the show due to the flu
- Mustafa Ali defeated The Miz after MizTV.
- John Cena faced Daniel Bryan in a steel cage match, with Bryan retaining the WWE Championship by escaping the cage. That's a really big match!

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. The Atlanta market was a key one for WWF at that time, which of course led to further moves that ended up creating WCW.

2. No. The hope was having NXT talent working the show would help get some of the G1 Supercard ticketholders to watch the show. WWE drew about 11,900 to a venue NJPW and ROH sold 15,000 tickets for. This venue, of course, is historically a WWE stronghold.

3. Much fewer people than get Pop or Destination America. For comparison, it's also lower than El Rey Network and AXS but a step up from BeIN Sports. I'll be surprised if they get 100,000 viewers a week given the numbers they're drawing now and how much smaller Pursuit is.

4. I fully expect them to separate the new "WWE" lineage from the "WWF" Women's Tag Team Championship. History is what they want it to be, after all.

5. It's notable Tyler Breeze mentioned him on Raw and WWE Network is featuring a show with him starring in it. I imagine he'll be back in time for the Andre the Giant Battle Royal.

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT Reax - 12/26/18, Podcast notes, new E&C episode coming, Rumble title match set up, AJ misses live event, WWE-MSG notes, and Questions on Lashley's pose, calling up NXT names as a group, AOP with Drake, Renee calling Dean's matches, and Mustafa on SDL

-- NXT:
- Io vs. Mia vs. Bianca vs. Lacey:
I guess of the four I'm most OK with losing Lacey from NXT.

Nice start.

I like the Mia/Io teaming.

I like how these names work together.

Can the new women's tag title also come to NXT?

Wowwww. I see why Io was hyped so much.

NICE. Shayna vs. Bianca is an interesting change of pace.

- Ryker squash:
I like the aggression.

Not bad at all!

- Dream video:
This guy's got something.

- Ciampa promo:
Interesting machinations from the champion.

Hmmmmmmmm. This should be fun.

Oh. We'll see how much action is on next week's show.

- KOR/Strong vs. HM:
UE can make anyone look amazing.

Good to see someone not fall for the float over in the corner.

UE is really smooth. They're wasting time in NXT to a degree.

I hope HM can be fun post-NXT. Even if they're stuck on Main Event.

I mean, really. I hope UE is being paid Raw or Smackdown Live level, because they're polished enough to be on those shows.

R-Truth is on Lilian Garcia's latest podcast.

Kane is on Stone Cold's latest podcast.

The Edge and Christian Show will debut a new episode after Raw.

Royal Rumble will feature a Cruiserweight Championship Fatal Four Way match with Buddy Murphy defending against the winners of the following three matches:
- Kalisto vs. Lio Rush (January 2)
- Drew Gulak vs. Akira Tozawa (January 2)
- Cedric Alexander vs. Hideo Itami (January 9)

AJ Styles missed Smackdown Live's December 26 event due to an illness. He was scheduled to face Daniel Bryan in a steel cage match for the WWE Championship. Instead, Bryan defeated The Miz and Mustafa Ali in a triple threat match.

At WWE's December 26 live event in Madison Square Garden:
- Johnny Gargano teamed with Tommaso Ciampa, Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, and Kyle O'Reilly in a loss to Aleister Black, Matt Riddle, Ricochet, Velveteen Dream, and Pete Dunne. Gargano was initially advertised as being on the opposite team before being dropped from the lineup.
- Braun Strowman did not work the show as advertised. Instead, Vince McMahon announced John Cena as Baron Corbin's opponent. Cena won.
- Ronda Rousey defeated Nia Jax in the first women's main event in Madison Square Garden
- Enzo Amore was outside the venue, but it's unknown if he made it inside.
- Joel Gertner was also at the show.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. That's definitely not "the" major demographic for WWE anymore. They're very deliberately trying to draw fans outside that group. Anyway, Lashley's pose is designed to get him over as a disrespectful heel.

2. It's a case-by-case situation for me. On this occasion, it made sense to hype a new "class" of NXT names coming to change up the stale landscape of Raw and Smackdown Live. If each show gets one woman and one male singles star, it should work out OK. There can definitely be a problem with too many new people competing for spots, but I don't think that's the situation this time.

3. The Drake pairing could have worked, but WWE decided to go in a different direction. Now instead of us talking about the dominant former NXT Tag Team Champions smashing fools, we're talking about bathroom humor.

4. I definitely don't see why she should have to stand by her husband if he does something she doesn't agree with, since she's a face and he's a heel. That's absurd. They could do a story where she refuses to call his matches or something, but that could put the attention on her instead of Dean's match. I like the idea of her saying commentary is her job and she's going to call his matches to the best of her ability, although certainly it makes sense at times for her to show concern for his actions.

5. Someone must have seen his potential and decided to use him to freshen up Smackdown Live. I think we could see further names moved from 205 Live in the months ahead. Time will tell if the show exists come October when Smackdown Live changes nights; WWE could be preparing for the roster to be incorporated elsewhere and dropping the show entirely.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Announcer in crash, EVOLVE champion calls out WWE star, Interview with Devi, Rock grants wishes, and Questions on hating people in wrestling, Impact roster's reaction to Pursuit move, why Bryan's a heel, what will change in WWE, and changing WCW music

Mauro Ranallo was in a serious car crash, but uninjured. That's SCARY.

EVOLVE Champion Austin Theory called out John Cena. I don't see that match happening, but good for him for dreaming big.

Kavita Devi spoke to The Indian Express about her goals.

The Rock granted Make-A-Wish wishes on the set of Hobbes & Shaw.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I wouldn't say that. There are definitely people I wish would leave the business forever/stop getting attention, but hate seems pretty strong. They don't really affect the non-wrestling parts of my life, and I can mostly enjoy wrestling without seeing much of them.

2. Yeah I expect a lot of those names are considering their next steps and seeing what other options they have. Impact management is going to have an uphill battle selling this move to the wrestlers, especially since there won't be an opportunity to address them in person until next weekend.

3. That is seen as a heel gimmick for a lot of people, even if he wasn't so self-righteous about it. People don't like to be blamed for things and told to change (which probably explains Vince's reaction to fan criticism...)

4. I definitely think they realize there's a need to change given the historically low viewership. They're going to make some changes, as they announced, but time will tell how drastically different things will be by mid-2019.

5. I can only imagine the costs and headaches involved with keeping the original music in a lot of cases.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Smackdown Live Reax - 12/25/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Smackdown Live.

Tuesday, December 25, 2018

AWA Hidden Gem, Network show preview, ROH name signs exclusive deals, another promotion at WM35 weekend, 205 Live name's comic released, ROH star trademarks name, ROH year-end polls, and Questions on Ultimate X in WWE, an Iron Man match in WWE, how the MMA Horsewomen would fare in a top PPV match, Ronda vs. Ken Shamrock, and Meltzer's reputation

AWA Nite of Champions II has been added to WWE Network as a Hidden Gem. This was a joint show with the NWA in 1985.

NBA's Enes Kanter previewed Kitchen SmackDown.

Shane Taylor has signed an exclusive deal with ROH. I'd loved to see him utilized as a top name there.

Stardom will be part of WrestleMania 35 weekend with an event in New York April 5. There's going to be a LOT of amazing wrestling that weekend.

Mustafa Ali's Headlocked comic is now available digitally. He's got an opportunity to be someone important going forward.

WWE has trademarked their new Network show names.

Flip Gordon has trademarked that name.

ROH is holding Best of 2018 polls.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Not good unless they buy out Impact, then do X-Division content on WWE Network to establish the match type. I really don't see them blatantly using an Impact match with Impact still in existence.

2. Yeah, two people in one match going an hour would be overkill in WWE in 2019. The only way I see a 60-minute match other than Royal Rumble working is if it's a gauntlet match or otherwise keeps refreshing itself. There's only so much you can do to keep people engaged with the same two people in the ring.

**It dawned on me after I answered this that Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada have gone 60 minutes twice. So that could hypothetically work, but I don't know how the WWE audience would react to it.

3. If that match does happen in 2019, I think it can be put together well enough to where everyone can shine.

4. I think Ronda beats everyone there. The only potential caveat is if we count Brock Lesnar's return to WWE after going to UFC. That one's tough.

5. I DEFINITELY don't think Meltzer is intentionally conning anyone, making up stories, or anything of the sort. He just likely has different sources with different agendas compared to some of the people on the inside who have access to certain information he might not have access to, on top of their own perspective from being there themselves. Everyone wants to present themselves and their circumstances in a certain light.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 12/24/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Monday, December 24, 2018

New AEW trademark, Botch Club preview, new HonorClub event, Bella milestone, another AWA Hidden Gem, Impact year-end awards, Impact injury, and Questions on wrestlers putting themselves over, what WWE will and won't change, Mustafa challenging Bryan, and WWE in Seattle

AEW has trademarked "Fight for the Fallen" for wrestling, music, PPV, and merchandising purposes. So that could be another event for the upcoming promotion.

"Botch Club" had a preview clip. I hope for their sake WWE uses them more going forward, because they're not going to be free to work NJPW or AEW until late in the year.

ROH will have an Honor Club event March 31 in Maryland. This is the final live event before G1 Supercard.

The Bella Twins hit two million YouTube subscribers.

AWA's 1987 Christmas event is featured as a WWE Network Hidden Gem. This featured Paul Heyman leading the Midnight Express against Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty.

Impact announced 2018 year-end awards:
- Wrestler of the Year: Sami Callihan (I guess acknowledging Aries would be too awkward?)
- Knockout of the Year: Tessa Blanchard
- Tag Team of the Year: LAX

Brian Cage has missed some bookings due to an undisclosed injury. I hope he's still able to work Homecoming. He's a big part of the show.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I'm actually a little surprised no one's sent in a question about why they aren't being pushed, but I guess they're more discreet than that.

2. We're almost definitely seeing more of the McMahons in the weeks to come because they've historically meant better ratings. We'll see what things look like going into and coming out of WrestleMania. Are Brock, Taker, HHH, Shane, etc. the most important people on TV come March and April? How will the NXT callups in the next six months fare?

3. Possibly, but it's probably better for them to start him in the U.S. Title picture or thereabouts. Once you go for the WWE Title, there's nowhere to go but down.

Nothing to add to 4.

5. It's worth looking at. WWE likes to have a lot of potential markets close together for touring, so some places don't get as much attention as the fans there would like.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Sunday, December 23, 2018

Podcast notes, ECW Hidden Gem, Hawkins vs. NWA star, Xavier's Arcade preview, Coach vs. Eugene in 2019, NJPW sellouts, Aro Lucha-POP update, and Questions on Impact's new TV home, Sabu's Twitter costing him bookings, Cena returning to WWE TV, Elias pre-WWE, and Nailz post-WWF

Matt Riddle is on Edge and Christian's latest podcast.

Jim Cornette is on Jim Ross' latest podcast.

Sami Zayn is on Chris Jericho's latest podcast.

Becky Lynch is training in Ireland.

ECW gets a Christmas-related Hidden Gem Sunday with The Sandman vs. Steve Corino vs. Justin Credible from December 2000. This is from the final "ECW Arena" event from the original ECW.

Curt Hawkins faced NBA's Enes Kanter at Hawkins' training school. Funny stuff.

Xavier Woods previewed his new WWE Network show. That looks fun.

Jonathan Coachman and the former Eugene are setting up a charity match for 2019. That's a great idea!

NJPW's next U.S. shows sold out the day the tickets were put on sale. That's great news for the brand's expansion.

Aro Lucha's commercials on Impact Wrestling are part of a deal between Anthem and Aroluxe Media regarding Anthem buying out that company's percentage of Impact ownership. The commercials were not inserted by Pop, and there are no indications Aro Lucha will be coming to Pop in 2019. It's possible the commercials continue on Pursuit, since they're added on Impact's end rather than by the distributor.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It definitely comes across as Impact being really desperate to keep the show on TV in the U.S. I really wonder where the show would end up if it wasn't for Anthem owning part of Pursuit.

2. It certainly wouldn't bode well. They'd certainly try to continue on, doing live events, Twitch specials, etc. as well as taping for international markets (and potentially online), but it would be a further blow to their dwindling prestige. It's going to be difficult enough to find a fourth TV home in five years, with the audience dropping each time they move. Anthem clearly hasn't thrown in the towel yet, but they're really in a bind right now.

3. He wasn't getting booked by anyone major before he joined Twitter, and at 54, it wasn't likely that was going to happen even if he was less of a headache to deal with. But certainly he could be adding fuel to the fire with his tweets. Promoters on the fence about using him who see those tweets might think twice about putting money in his pocket. Of course he has the right to his opinions, but promoters and fans have the right to not reward someone who says those kinds of things.

4. I don't believe so, especially if he's not going to be at Royal Rumble. I'm under the impression he's going to jump into something else during WrestleMania season, so I think they'll keep him on live events.

5. I don't know who trained him musically.

6. It doesn't look like he's wrestled since 2001, and that was after a three-year hiatus. Whatever he does now, it's not taking bumps or signing pictures.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Saturday, December 22, 2018

Rumble match announced and dropped, WM35 comic, Impact moving channels, All In main event released, Bandido's ROH debut set, Brock Raw date, more Hidden Gems, WWE TV wins social awards, Cena skit, new Network shows this week, new wrestling HoFers, Impact audience, Tribute audience, and Questions on working injured body parts, wrestlers who should have been world champion, Burchill's status, Flair vs. Muta, and Taker working Japan

WWE announced Asuka vs. Becky Lynch for Royal Rumble before revoking it. It could be they want Becky to win the Rumble and don't want to put her on double duty that night.

WWE comics will have a WrestleMania special issue in March. The art on the series is always incredible.

Impact will move to Pursuit Channel starting January 11. The show will air Fridays at 10 p.m., meaning it will follow Smackdown Live beginning in October.

- Anthem is a partner in the channel, so this was a natural move.

- Pursuit Channel is in far fewer homes than Pop or Destination America, with a significantly smaller social media presence. This feels like a last-ditch, desperation move on Anthem and Impact's end. It keeps them alive, but it's not a step up or even a step to the same level.

- Impact is still seeking a larger, more profitable U.S. distribution deal. This move is being presented as Impact having a safe haven while they pursue their next steps.

- Pursuit is interested in further Impact programming, including Xplosion and making use of the video library. That could be helpful for Impact.

- Impact moved from Pop due to feeling Pop was changing directions and would drop them sooner rather than later. Impact chose to leave while things were on good terms.

- There are no current announcements of replays or digital distribution of Impact episodes once this deal takes effect. It could be something they're still working on.

ROH released All In's main event on YouTube to promote Bandido signing with them. He can definitely be an important part of the company.

- Bandido will work both the January 12 TV taping and January 13 Honorclub event. I'm glad they're putting their new talents right to work.

Brock Lesnar is advertised for the January 21 Raw leading to Royal Ruble 2019. WWE has a big opportunity to establish Braun Strowman and show they're truly committed to new ideas with this feud.

WWE Network continues to use AWA Christmas cards on their Hidden Gems.

Raw and Smackdown Live were among the top five "social" shows of 2018, according to Nielsen. Raw was second with engagements on Facebook and Twitter, while Smackdown Live was fifth.

John Cena was in a "couple's therapy" skit on YouTube.

WWE Network is debuting new series this week:
- "Fashion Files: Cold Case Unit" will debut after Raw
- "Xavier's Arcade Challenge" will debut at 7:30 p.m. before Smackdown Live
- "WWE Kitchen Smackdown" will debut Thursday at 7 p.m.
- "Botch Club" will debut Friday at 7 p.m. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson are part of this.

Beth Phoenix is the first female inductee into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. That's very special.

- Author Brian Shields is also being inducted this year.

Impact Wrestling drew 116,000 viewers for their first of two Best of 2018 episodes Thursday night. That's in line with what they've generally done in that time slot. We'll see if they can hit that number on Pursuit.

Tribute to the Troops drew 1.13 million viewers.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Once someone's cleared, they're cleared. There's a lot of rehabilitation before someone's allowed back in the ring.

2. Hennig was AWA World Champion, notably. I think Wade Barrett should have been WWE Champion during the Nexus angle. That's the most prominent recent name that comes to mind.

3. I marked out so hard for Burchill. He actually worked OVW 1000, but only had a handful of matches after WWE.

4. It was likely either Great Muta or Buzz Sawyer. This could have been Starrcade 1989 on December 13, because I don't see any other time they faced off one-on-one that was televised.

5. WWE plays loose with facts sometimes as part of the work, making things seem bigger or more important they are. Undertaker worked Japan in 1990 as Punisher Dice Morgan, before returning in 1992 and 1994 as Undertaker before that match in 1997.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Friday, December 21, 2018

Owens+Zayn injury updates, more on NXT callups, TLC attendance note, Elite-WWE update, SCU-ROH update, ROH announces signing, more on new ROH signing, WK13 attendance update, new Grado role, ROH loses top TV market, WWE already planning more Saudi shows, more on NXT release, NXT UK release, WWE press, new ROH event match, new wrestling convention, WWE expands Japanese TV deal, Elite to miss Supercard, another NXT name working MSG, Arquette's NWA event role, Rousey documentary update, New Day special audience, Whitmer leaves ROH, and Questions on Flair wrestling again, Toots in the HoF, Savio copying Muta, Yokozuna's WWF rise, and the origins of the Crow Sting angle

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are expected to be cleared to return to the ring around February. WWE just promoted them on Raw to push that fresh names would be in the mix before WrestleMania.

NXT's announced callups were expected names internally. It's mostly just a matter of telling fans they're coming soon rather than a sudden move to feature new talent.

TLC was a legitimate sellout of 12,000 fans.

WWE offered Cody and the Young Bucks top-level deals, but those talents turned the contracts down in order to work on their own promotion.

ROH is not expected to re-sign Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky. Christopher Daniels has not made a decision regarding ROH yet, but is taking independent bookings for 2019. ROH has left his future open-ended going into the January 12 TV taping.

ROH has officially signed Mark Haskins, as they were expected to do.

- Haskins will work the January 12 TV taping and January 13 Honorclub event.

ROH signing Bandido was something of a blow to AEW, as they wanted to feature him. However, with AEW not having dates or contracts set, Bandido went with the more concrete offer from ROH.

- Bandido is also interested in working with NJPW. He finishes with Dragon Gate on December 23.

WrestleKingdom 13 is on pace to beat WK12's attendance, which saw an impressive increase.

Grado has gotten a regular role on a BBC 2 comedy show. He hasn't been in Impact in a while, and it looks like that's going to continue to be the case.

ROH has lost their Philadelphia TV station. Sinclair Broadcasting doesn't have an affiliate there. That's unfortunate, although I think people will continue to support the promotion in the area.

Saudi Arabia is set to host WWE again in May and November 2019. I'm curious which part-timers/legends will work those shows.

The Mighty's Nick Miller requested his release due to his wife giving birth in Australia. The door is open for him to return. It had to be tough to move halfway around the world away.

NXT UK's Tucker has officially been released. This had been speculated recently.

The Miz promoted Tribute to the Troops. He's finally getting his due from fans and critics.

ROH's January 13 Honorclub event has added:
- Kelly Klein vs. Jenny Rose for the WOH Championship

A 1980s-centric wrestling convention has been announced for April 27 in New Jersey.

WWE has extended their Japanese TV deal, adding one-hour versions of Raw and Smackdown Live. I think a lot of U.S. fans wish those shows were an hour each!

The Young Bucks confirmed they won't be at G1 Supercard. That's a big blow for that show. If The Elite aren't even working ROH when NJPW is in town, that's a major downgrade for the company's events.

Matt Riddle will join Aleister Black, Pete Dunne, Ricochet, and The Velveteen Dream against Tommaso Ciampa and the Undisputed Era on WWE's December 26 Madison Square Garden show. He replaces Johnny Gargano following Gargano's heel turn. It's worth noting no one in this match was announced as leaving NXT as part of WWE's shakeup. I see that as WWE saving those names to arrive on Raw or Smackdown Live for a bigger occasion.

David Arquette has challenged Jocephus to a hair vs. hair tag team match at NWA's January 5 event.

Ronda Rousey's WWE 24 documentary is expected to follow the 2019 Royal Rumble on WWE Network.

New Day's USA Network special drew 584,000 viewers. NXT last year in the timeslot did 841,000 viewers. However, the Raw and Smackdown Live that preceded that NXT drew 2.68 million and 2.48 million respectively. Raw and Smackdown Live drew lower numbers this year, so that's part of the reason the special didn't reach where NXT did. Even with that factored in, NXT seems like the better option if USA does this again in 2019.

BJ Whitmer has resigned from ROH following the completion of Final Battle weekend. WWE had invited him to be a guest coach at the Performance Center in September, but ROH got involved and he declined the offer. It's possible that's his next step. Whitmer had been a trainer for the ROH Dojo in addition to working on travel and production from ROH headquarters, so he won't be easily replaced. Notably, his wife is new WOH Champion Kelly Klein. It will be interesting to see how she fits into plans following his departure.

Daniel Bryan burying Fresno's air quality got local press.

Carmella discussed winning MMC and more.

Kacy Catanzaro hosted Make-A-Wish kids at the WWE Performance Center.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. There's not much of anything Flair can do that would surprise me after his rap appearances. If he wants to have fun and he's confident enough in his health to do it, we could see it.

2. It's well deserved, for sure.

3. It could be some of both!

4. Wow. That's a very impressive rocket to the top.

5. It was all a storyline to relaunch Sting's career. There were times later on when he did take breaks from WCW, but ultimately he was still part of the roster until the final show.

Nothing to add to 6 or 7.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Tribute to the Troops 2018 Reax

Read on for my thoughts on last night's WWE special.

Thursday, December 20, 2018

Christmas SDL lineup, Interviews with Cena/Bayley/Heyman/Xavier, NWA popup matches, Bray's return set, MMC vacation update, Network podcast returning, ROH using NJPW name more frequently, Elite dark match hits Honorclub, Black set for ROH shows, ROH event match set, EVOLVE 118 notes, ROH in Japan dates, Jericho cruise returning, SDL audience, USA praises WWE's ratings, and Questions on the Shield reunion, Carmella moving down the card, and The Elite's decision

Smackdown Live on December 25 will feature:
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Rusev for the WWE United States Championship
- Jeff Hardy vs. Samoa Joe
- MizTV with Shane McMahon
- The Bar and SAnitY vs. New Day, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows
- Andrade "Cien" Almas vs. Mustafa Ali

John Cena was on Jimmy Kimmel's latest show to talk wrestling and more.

NWA's January 5 event has added:
- Jazz vs. Allie for the NWA Women's Championship
- Willie Mack vs. Matt Cross for the NWA National Championship
- David Arquette in action

Bayley promoted WWE returning to the UK in May.

Bray Wyatt will work Raw's year-end live events. So his social media posts could have been a reference to coming back for those.

R-Truth and Carmella will have their "WWE headquarters vacation" after Christmas, as WWE is running live events nearby.

"Something Else to Wrestle With" is set to return to WWE Network in 2019, likely after WrestleMania. The show could undergo some changes.

Will Ospreay is being scouted for more ROH shows when his NJPW schedule allows. That would definitely be a boost for ROH.

The Elite's final ROH match is now available on Honorclub. Cody, the Young Bucks, and Hangman Page faced Jay Lethal, Flip Gordon, and the Best Friends at the December 15 TV taping.

ROH's January 13 Honorclub event has added:
- The Kingdom vs. Hurricane Helms, Delirious, and Luchasaurus in a Proving Ground match

PJ Black will work ROH's January 12 TV taping and January 13 Honorclub event. ROH is already picking up talent to replenish the roster with The Elite leaving.

At EVOLVE 118:
- The Street Profits attacked Impact's King after a no contest with JD Drake.
- The Street Profits retained their championship over Austin Theory and Harlem Bravado
- Leon Ruff got a WWN contract after losing to AR Fox
- Roderick Strong defeated Darby Allin
- Kassius Ohno defeated Anthony Henry

Paul Heyman was on New York's WPIX to promote WrestleMania.

ROH and NJPW have announced Honor Rising in Japan for February 22 and February 23.

Chris Jericho has announced another cruise for 2019.

Smackdown Live drew 2.21 million viewers Tuesday, so that was a boost from last week.

USA Network praised WWE for delivering ratings success. Even with numbers what they are now, Raw and Smackdown Live are among the top shows on cable.

Xavier Woods gave promo advice.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. There's a knee-jerk reaction to bash WWE booking as illogical.

2. WWE saw more value in pushing other names after they gave her a prominent spot. I can't say I'm upset we're seeing Naomi and Asuka get opportunities instead.

3. If they're going to continue wrestling with NJPW, I think they have the chance to be incredibly successful based on how All In went. It can certainly be argued The Elite was a big part of ROH's success in 2018, and that they can draw crowds without that company's backing.

4. I expect them to be at Supercard unless there's a big falling out of some kind. They were very complimentary of ROH on the way out. As for a full-time return, I'd think that would be behind NJPW and WWE on the list if AEW doesn't succeed. Those talents now what kind of price they can get elsewhere.

5. Not really, since I know not everyone knows resources like cagematch.net exist.

More wrestling tomorrow.

205 Live, NXT, and ROH Reax - 12/19/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's 205 Live, NXT, and ROH.

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Dream wants callup, potential Bray change, Interviews with Mondo/Cena, more AWA Christmas content, ROH title match set, NXT callups comment, Gas profiled, WWE Christmas message, Arquette responds to critics, Tribute to the Troops hype, more Global Force content, PCO-ROH update, Omega DVD coming, Raw audience, and Questions on Bryan's turn, podcasts, WWE dropping unique sets, USA+FOX on WWE's ratings, and WWE just having one champion

Velveteen Dream tweeted a number of statements supporting being "called up" from NXT, and asked fans to "spam" WWE social media accounts in support of him going to Raw or Smackdown Live. I don't think WWE will take too kindly to that. He might torpedo his own cause there.

Bray Wyatt posted a number of Tweets suggesting a new direction (or something): Tweet 1 Tweet 2 Tweet 3 Other than Starrcade, he hasn't wrestled since September, so he's probably antsy to get back to work.

Nick Mondo is on Stone Cold's latest podcast.

WWE Network has posted AWA Christmas 1983 matches for Hidden Gems:
- Buck Zumhofe vs. Bill White
- Billy Robinson vs. Brad Rheingans
- Rick Martel vs. "Superstar" Billy Graham
- Steve Olsonowski vs. Jesse Ventura
- Greg Gagne, Baron Von Raschke, Ray Stevens, and Jim Brunzell vs. Ken Patera, Jerry Blackwell, Mr. Saito, and Sheik Adnan
- Mad Dog Vachon vs. Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA World Championship

ROH's January 13 Honorclub event will be headlined by:
- Jay Lethal vs. Dalton Castle for the ROH World Championship. That's a pretty significant match.

EC3, Lacey Evans, Lars Sullivan, Nikki Cross, and Heavy Machinery's Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovic commented on moving on from NXT.

- Dixie Carter also commented on EC3's promotion. I actually miss Dixie...

Pete Gas was profiled in Connecticut. I miss the Posse too actually.

WWE created an animated Christmas message. That's pretty well done.

David Arquette commented on criticism of his wrestling: Tweet 1 Tweet 2 Tweet 3 Tweet 4. I don't know how wise it is to encourage fans to confront him in person, but he's been willing to take some serious punishment lately.

New Day served pancakes to troops at Denny's. This is a real wrestling gimmick in 2018. It makes them money, though, so good for them.

Global Force is bringing UK's Monopoly Comic Cons to FITE. Sting will be at a convention from March 8 through March 10, while Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Jim Duggan will be at a convention on April 27 and April 28. Global Force's greatest strength seems to be having connections.

Ember Moon promoted Tribute to the Troops.

John Cena talked wrestling for Comedy Central's 7 Minutes in Heaven. He really is willing to do just about any opportunity.

PCO already has a T-shirt with ROH. That's opportunity!

Kenny Omega is getting an ROH DVD. They've benefitted immensely from the NJPW association.

Raw drew 2.55 million viewers Monday, a sizable increase of 400,000 for the McMahons' appearance and TLC fallout.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. We're essentially at a point now where wrestling audiences are going to cheer people they see as doing good work and boo people they think aren't deserving of a push. Him being a heel is fresh and lets him work with new people, so I'm not really complaining. And yes, he was the one who pushed to turn heel.

2. I don't listen to any of them regularly enough to know, but I don't dismiss those two out of hand considering they actually had a hand in the events discussed. Everyone has their version of events, to be sure.

3. WWE cuts costs by having standard sets, with the argument no one's making a decision whether or not to watch a show because of the stage or pyro. WWE makes things pretty interchangeable as a whole these days for efficiency.

4. Basically WWE is a more attractive (less unattractive?) option than creating original programming or most other replacements they could come up with, since they don't really have to sell anyone on what the show is. Everyone already knows what WWE is. That's not true of most properties.

5. There are still two touring brands and two rosters. Whichever brand doesn't have the title could potentially be seen as the B-show. Plus, having one champion/set of champions on each brand could further overexpose those talents. And, yes, WWE would almost certainly make that one champion Brock.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Smackdown Live Reax - 12/18/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Smackdown Live.

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

NFL stars at TLC, Interview with Mustafa, WWE extends international TV deal, 205 Live talent working Japanese promotion, more AWA Christmas Hidden Gems, SCU-ROH update, former ROH Champion at weekend events, MLW marathon coming, Schiavone documentary coming, MLW injuries, MLW press, MLW looking to expand TV clearance, Interview with Natalya, GLOW comic coming, Raw dark match, Raw lineup, and Questions on fans taking over Raw, boycotting WWE TV due to the Saudi deal, SAnitY not working out on SDL, WM35 in Minnesota, and LGBTQ+ angles in WWE

NFL players Earl Mitchell and George Kittle were at TLC, discussing supporting Connor's Cure.

- USA Today covered them attending.

Mustafa Ali is on Lilian Garcia's latest podcast. I hope he has a future beyond 205 Live. He showed something on Smackdown Live.

WWE has extended their New Zealand TV deal, adding one-hour versions of Raw and Smackdown Live on free TV.

Akira Tozawa will compete for Fight Club Pro in Japan. Good to see him getting work beyond 205 Live given how sparse that schedule is.

AWA Christmas matches from 1981 and 1982 have been added to WWE Network's Hidden Gems section in a one-hour special:
- 1981's Nick Bockwinkel vs. Billy Robinson
- 1981's Hulk Hogan and Tito Santana vs. Ken Patera and Bobby Duncum
- 1982's Baron Von Raschke vs. Jacques Goulet
- 1982's Ken Patera vs. Steve Olsonoski
- 1982's Rick Martel vs. Bobby Heenan

SoCal Uncensored's ROH contracts end at the end of 2019. It's expected at least Christopher Daniels will work January's TV taping. We'll see how that goes.

Homicide was backstage at ROH events this weekend. I'd definitely like to see him back there.

MLW will have a marathon on beIN sports December 31.

Tony Schiavone is the subject of an upcoming documentary due to his return to wrestling announcing.

Davey Boy Smith, Jr. worked MLW's tapings through a big fever.

Tom Lawlor worked MLW with a crushed knuckle.

Mexican TV station TV Azteca recently filmed content at MLW.

MLW is looking to bring Fusion to European TV. That would definitely be big.

MLW got press from the local FOX affiliate for their Florida tapings.

Natalya promoted Raw. She does a lot of PR for the company.

GLOW will be a comic miniseries. It's amazing how over the revival has gotten.

Zack Ryder defeated Mojo Rawley in a dark match before Raw. I expect Main Event to be exclusively video packages the next two weeks due to the double Raw taping.

Raw next week will feature:
- Ronda Rousey vs. Natalya for the Raw Women's Championship
- Bobby Lashley vs. Elias in a Miracle on 34th Street Fight
- Seth Rollins vs. Baron Corbin
- Drew McIntyre vs. Finn Balor vs. Dolph Ziggler
- Bayley, Sasha Banks, and Ember Moon vs. Mickie James, Dana Brooke, and Alicia Fox
- Heath Slater vs. Jinder Mahal

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. In this case I think it's clear Vince was actually getting the message and delivering changes, so there wasn't much reason to try to take over (other than Corbin remaining a character). I disagree that fans hijacked the show when Roman beat Taker; WWE knew fans would react that way and sent Roman out there to soak it up.

2. I could see that playing a factor in things, just like I could see Linda McMahon being part of the Trump administration leading to fan discontent, but I don't think it's a prominent factor.

3. Hey, Triple H knows what Vince wants for Raw and Smackdown Live. If he makes things that aren't in line with that vision, he shouldn't be surprised when Vince doesn't "get" them.

4. They've been in the running for a number of years, so I think there's a good chance it happens before too much longer.

5. For what it's worth, Sonya has worn rainbow ring gear as a nod to her orientation in the past. I could see angles down the line where LGBTQ+ characters have relationships in line with their orientations, but there's still a sizable segment of the audience that would view that as "shoving those issues down their throats." WWE got backlash for doing an all-women's PPV and having women strike men. There would be even more outrage for a same-sex couple on WWE TV.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 12/17/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Monday, December 17, 2018

New Hidden Gem, Interview with Becky, Culkin thumb wrestles, Cody puts ROH over, Vince announcement, SDL announcer misses TLC, new ROH signing, and Questions on Vince's announcement and changes in WWE's direction

Randy Savage's 1992 Christmas message with George Steinbrenner is WWE Network's latest Hidden Gem.

Becky Lynch discussed "The Marine 6" and more.

Macaulay Culkin thumb-wrestled wrestlers. I can't say I expected that to happen in 2018.

Cody put ROH over on Twitter. Very classy exit.

Vince McMahon is expected to announce a superstar shakeup/draft tonight on Raw. That could certainly change some things that need changing, but there are other problems that need to be addressed beyond who's on which show.

Byron Saxton missed TLC due to an unspecified illness. It's unknown if this is related to the illness Finn Balor, Bobby Roode, and Alexa Bliss ended up with.

ROH has signed Bandido, who notably wrestled in All In's main event. Bandido will debut for the promotion in 2019. WWE had been trying to pick him up, as well. It's surprising ROH was able to get him given that fact. His tag team partner Flamita is also being pursued by ROH and other promotions, so we could see that duo reunite soon.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Let's just say I wouldn't bet on it happening.

2. 100%. Vince is going to address that tonight. We'll see how much of a change he's willing to commit to.

3. It's going to be different for each viewer, but I think he needs to acknowledge WWE TV hasn't been excelling lately and he intends to do something about it.

4. Stephanie and Triple H are being groomed for it, so they're the natural choices. I'm worried, though, given the less-than-stellar returns on 205 Live and NXT UK. Triple H has shown he can spend a lot of money to get talented people and put them in good matches, and he's shown he can draw big crowds close to major Raw/Smackdown Live events, but running Raw and Smackdown Live is a whole different ball game.

5. Only if they don't have to run things by Vince. As long as there's still the expectation they're ultimately doing things the way the Chairman wants, I don't see things being changed all that much. If Vince completely turns his attention elsewhere, new directions can start.

More wrestling tomorrow.

TLC 2018 Reax

Read on for my thoughts on last night's WWE Network special.

Sunday, December 16, 2018

WWE Network notes, vintage WWE commercial, NXT release, WM2 competitor passes, a lot of Final Battle notes, new ROH signings, another ROH deal expiring, ROH Dojo gets new operating manager, Future Of Honor shows booked, NXT name loses EVOLVE title, Gargano to EVOLVE, Finn returns, and Questions on Vince's Raw appearance, SCU's future, Christmas gift, Warrior missing Survivor Series '92, and the Mid-South Coliseum's future

The Edge and Christian Show will not have a new episode after Raw this week. Instead, the episode debuting tonight will replay in that timeslot.

Becky Lynch is on WWE Chronicle, now available on WWE Network.

WWE and Mattel did a "vintage" commercial for their retro figures. AMAZING.

NXT has released Nick Miller of The Mighty. That's unfortunate, as the team was finally getting a niche again. I'm curious what this means for Shane Thorne.

WrestleMania 2 competitor Bill Fralic passed away at 56. That's sad to hear.

AWA's 1981 Christmas match of Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell vs. Jerry Blackwell and Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie has been added to WWE Network as a Hidden Gem.

Final Battle was a legitimate sellout.

Ladder War was originally set to go 40 minutes, but was cut to 25 right before it began due to the undercard matches going long. ROH needs to really get a hold on that. The match was absolutely amazing at 25 minutes, though, so I'm not complaining.

ROH PPVs aren't expected to go to four hours on a more permanent basis.

Dave Lagana was at Final Battle filming footage for Pinnacle.

ROH is believed to have signed Mark Haskins and Kelly Klein to contracts.

Prince Nana worked backstage at Final Battle in an unknown role.

Becky Bayless/Cookie was visiting at Final Battle.

LSG's ROH contract is set to expire at the end of the year. No word regarding Shaheem Ali. The pair did appear at a Future of Honor event recently.

Tenille Dashwood did a signing before ROH's December 15 TV taping, but she was not involved on-screen.

ROH Dojo has named Monster Factory owner/coach Danny Cage as operations manager. Monster Factory will be holding Future of Honor events on January 18 and February 15. It's good to see ROH getting its trainees work and getting developmental up and running.

Fabian Aichner lost the EVOLVE Championship in a triple threat with Roderick Strong and new champion Austin Theory.

Johnny Gargano will be at EVOLVE's January 18 and January 19 shows in New York. That's a homecoming for him.

Finn Balor returned to the ring at Saturday's Raw live event, so he will compete at TLC as planned.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Vince is arriving to "shake things up," and he knows people will pay attention to him being on the show since he's legitimately the guy who can FIRE people and make changes. I expect he'll announce a change to the GM at least. If there is a new authority figure, that person could make further announcements about a new direction for Raw. I don't think Vince expects a big, lasting change in the audience just because he shows up. At least, he shouldn't, considering where the audience was with the likes of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, and Kane on Raw regularly.

2. All three members of SCU appeared as part of the next night's TV taping, but there's no word on them staying into 2019.

3. Finally getting an NXT live event within driving distance in early January.

4. Warrior failed a steroid test and WWF decided they didn't want to use him anymore.

5. It could still be a long time. The building has been saved, but there's not a plan for what to do with it next.

More wrestling tomorrow.

TLC preview

Read on for my ideas for booking tonight's WWE Network special event.

Saturday, December 15, 2018

Main Event Reax - 12/14/18, new Impact PPV match, UK changing WWE airtimes, HBK on WWEPC, Final Battle hype, Ring Warriors gets new home, lots of Hidden Gems coming, Becky talks to E&C, Cena press, Impact audience, Vince back on WWE TV, Final Battle curtain call, NXT live event return, and Questions on UE not using the Freebird Rule, EC3 dropping his longer name, streaming wrestling, WWE not honoring legends, and the Muppets on Raw

-- Main Event:
- Mojo vs. Breeze:
So-so so far.

OK. Tough to follow Final Battle!

- LHP vs. Ascension/Hawkins:
Oh LHP is definitely officially part of Raw now.

I believe Hawkins is 0-242 going into this one. But it's a six-man tag! It might be time to turn things around!

I like the lucha teamwork.

It's good to see both sides mix it up with new opponents.

Impressive work from LHP. I liked that.

Impact's Homecoming PPV has added Eddie Edwards vs. Moose in a Falls Count Anywhere match. That should be really solid.

WWE's UK broadcast partner is shuffling Raw and Smackdown Live to different channels for the rest of 2018 due to the Darts World Championship. The current product is less over than DARTS. Let that sink in.

Shawn Michaels discussed his WWEPC role. Interesting comments about turning down opportunities to be in the spotlight in favor of younger talent. I do wonder how different past generations of WWE would have been if they kept inserting stars of 15+ years ago into things.

Ring Warriors will now air on Amazon Prime, with a "winter season finale" on December 22 featuring the last currently taped matches from the promotion. There are no current tapings announced for the group, and it's unknown whether they will return to WGN America. However, the press release indicates more announcements are coming soon regarding venues and talents.

WWE Network will be adding Hidden Gems each day through December 25.

Becky Lynch is on Edge & Christian's latest podcast.

Karen Q was profiled before Final Battle. It's telling she has to have a day job as well. We'll see if she ends up moving to Orlando soon.

ROH Pinnacle is expected to continue, with Lightning One working on the series.

Luchasaurus is booked for ROH's January 12 TV taping and January 13 Honorclub event. He has an opportunity to break out in 2019 with all the departures pending.

Becky Lynch spoke to Yahoo! Sports. I hope WWE takes a lesson from her getting over rather than Charlotte. There's a definite disconnect with what WWE pushes and what some fans want.

John Cena's humanitarian efforts were profiled.

WCCW's Christmas Star Wars 1981 has been added as a Hidden Gem. Notably, three matches are cut from the presentation.

Atlas Security worked Final Battle.

Madison Rayne talked to The Mirror before Final Battle. She's really had a lot of opportunities in 2018.

Jay Lethal talked to Gamespot before Final Battle. His Randy Savage impersonation is more over than being ROH Champion, it looks like.

Impact drew 140,000 viewers Thursday night, the highest milestone in the new timeslot. It will be very interesting to see how the next two weeks' "Best Of" shows do.

John Cena and Matthew McConaughey discussed wrestling on Graham Norton's show.

Vince McMahon will appear on Raw. They've got an opportunity to get the ball rolling on some changes. This is going to be an important episode.

The Elite, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky thanked fans after Final Battle, with the Young Bucks strongly putting over ROH personnel before promising to return in New York City. That may or may not have been a hint to The Elite appearing on G1 Supercard. Notably Christopher Daniels was not part of this segment despite his contract coming due at the end of the year, while Marty Scurll was even though his contract continues well into 2019. This could be because Daniels already had a moment in the ring earlier in the show.

Rinku Singh returned to NXT live events for the first time in more than a month, teaming with Mansoor Al-Shehail in a loss to Heavy Machinery on December 14 in Florida.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Somewhat surprisingly they're not using the Freebird Rule. That could always change down the line, though. It's also possible they want to focus on the two younger names instead of the 39-year-old Fish.

2. I don't see a trademark for the full name. I think they could still use it, but EC3 is short and catchy and doesn't remind people of the former Impact president.

3. I use my computer, but I can see why others want a larger screen.

4. I can see the Natalya aspect. I read it as them not wanting to honor the controversial Dynamite Kid, but that doesn't explain not honoring Hennig.

5. He's fine with some comedy in wrestling. Things can get monotonous without something outlandish like the Broken Universe every so often.

More wrestling tomorrow.

WWE Chile tryout note, AAA Twitch deal update, NJPW U.S. show plans, AXS-WOW update, MLW star no longer being used, CZW show sells out, former Impact wrestler changes ring name, WOS cancels another live event, WWE injury updates, 205 Live timeslot update, Raw illness, NXT UK promotions update, Rhyno update, Becky documentary coming, Titus working on a book, Interviews with Cena/Bully/Natalya/Rayne, FCW Hidden Gem, Vanilla Ice responds to SDL, Paige movie moved, MLW digital series, Bischoff podcast live, ROH star signing, women's encyclopedia coming, ROH interested in UK stars, top name set for Raw, another Impact taping, Johnny Impact promotion, another WWE MSG match, another big WWE tryout, and Questions on CZW growing in appeal, going back to Divas, removing live events, and acknowledging the Dean/Renee relationship

AAA's Dragon Bane, Keyra, and Lady Maravilla recently tried out for WWE, but aren't able to join NXT at the moment due to their current AAA contracts.

AAA's Twitch deal will extend into 2019.

NJPW's recently-announced U.S. shows will mostly showcase their Los Angeles trainees.

NJPW originally intended a February 3 date in Georgia, but didn't want to compete with the Super Bowl that night. This would have put them closer to February 1's North Carolina show.

AXS's WOW show will air after NJPW. In some ways that makes sense, but they're two very different products.

MLW will no longer be using Garza, Jr. due to him missing out on an MLW commitment to meet with WWE. Humberto Carrillo was also in that meeting, though he did get signed.

Cage of Death 20 was a sellout of 1,000 fans.

Robbie E is now wrestling under his real name due to appearing on The Rock's "Titan Games" with that name.

WOS Wrestling canceled their January 27 show due to poor ticket sales. This was after moving to a smaller venue and doing a two-for-one ticket special. The show has still not been picked up for a second season.

Matt Hardy is working toward returning to the ring. He recently said he's been out of the ring due to nagging injuries.

205 Live will remain on Wednesdays for the remainder of 2018. 2019 plans have not been decided.

Alexa Bliss and Bobby Roode were ill at Raw alongside Finn Balor. It's unknown if this is all related.

NXT UK talents can still wrestle for Stardom, but aren't allowed to work with talents under contract to ROH or WOS. Impact is still permitted, which feels odd.

Rhyno is still under WWE contract. I'm guessing there's an idea to bring him back to storylines soon.

Becky Lynch is the subject of an upcoming WWE Network documentary.

Titus O'Neil is working on a book about kids coming in summer. He's really done great work.

John Cena discussed returning to WWE. He's going to stay busy as long as he can, wherever that will be.

Bully Ray is on Jim Ross' latest podcast to promote Final Battle.

Thursday's WWE Network Hidden Gem featured Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose from FCW in 2011.

Natalya spoke with Dynamite Kid's daughter.

- Natalya also discussed her current storyline. The Hart Family has been very public, even during tragedies.

Vanilla Ice mentioned Smackdown Live referencing him, and Cesaro responded. Future WWE Hall of Famer????

Paige's movie will now release February 14 in select cities before a February 21 larger U.S. release.

MLW is launching a Hart Foundation-themed digital series on their YouTube page. Davey Boy Smith, Jr., Brian Pillman, Jr., and Teddy Hart are executive producers.

Eric Bischoff's podcast will be live Saturday in New York.

Marty Scurll had a signing in New York last night.

A women's wrestling encyclopedia is coming May 7, featuring 100 competitors. There are legends and current stars, including international names. It will be interesting to see who does and doesn't make the list.

ROH is interested in using Davey Boy Smith, Jr. and Mark Haskins more in 2019. I would absolutely like to see Smith more.

Madison Rayne promoted Final Battle. She can be an important fixture in ROH.

Kurt Angle is set for WWE's Raw taping Monday night. Note two episodes will be taped then. WWE could put him back as GM to see if that will address falling viewership. I think it will have a small effect, but it's not going to solve all their problems.

Sin Cara has been at the WWE Performance Center training for a return. It's believed he's been cleared to get back in the ring.

Braun Strowman is scheduled to be at TLC. We'll see what Creative has up their sleeves if he's not 100%.

Impact will tape TV at Culture Clash 19. I'm curious how that will work out.

Johnny Impact promoted Homecoming to local media.

WWE's Madison Square Garden show will now feature Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Finn Balor. Dolph is seemingly a tweener now,

WWE's latest tryout featured:
- Eric Spicely, former UFC fighter who's trained under Oney Lorcan and worked for Beyond Wreseling
- Cal Bloom, daughter of Beau Beverly who's trained under Ken Kennedy/Ken Anderson and Brad Rheingans.
- Emmanuel Matadi, Olympic sprinter
- Heba Ali, physical trainer
- Matrick Belton, former college wide receiver
- Olivia Hasley (Penelope Ford)
- Jeremiah Buoni of MTV's "Floribama Shore"
- Randy Bynoe, amateur wrestler who trained under Rip Rogers and Santino Marella
- Clayton Chambers (Van Harrison), who has trained under Booker T.
- Jonathan Cruz, who has trained under the Dudleys
- Alexis Evans, rugby star and body builder
- Danielle Hardy (Marti Daniels), volleyball player
- Latasha Harris (Tasha Steelz)
- Donald Howard (Daniel Eads)
- Lenns Kamba, amateur wrestler
- Vincent Lawrence, basketball player and bodybuilder
- Tina Rivas, weightlifter
- Kenny Marquez (Jake Atlas), college cheerleader
- Caleb Marsh, collegiate wrestler
- Josh McNeil, football player
- Luis "Gino" Medina, who has trained under Booker T.
- Isaac Melton (Ike Cross), who has trained under Robert Gibson
- Jake Metz, former NFL player
- Tehuti Miles, college football player and karate fighter
- Alexander Morehouse, Olympic weightlifter and college cheerleader
- EJ Nduka, body builder and MMA competitor
- Yaw Jason Osei, college football player and MMA competitor
- Tom Parsons, football player and college powerlifter
- Jumal Pritchett (Jumal Kyng), football and basketball player
- Nick Pulos. bodybuilder and actor
- Forrest Rhines (Cooley AAYOOO) . That's the most amazing ring name I think I've ever heard.
- Ian Michael Simon, college football player, strongman competitor, and strength coach
- Courtney Lemmings, bikini competitor
- Emily Loogman, track-and-field star
- Haley Jade Poston, fitness instructor, model, and cheerleader
- Karissa Rivera, daughter of Steve King and figure skater
- Brittany Rae Steding, gymnast

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I don't expect something that violent and graphic to gain a huge following, but potentially someone could market it in a way that would garner more interest. I hope no one goes into deathmatches expecting to make a ton of money, since it is such a niche style and there are some serious medical risks involved.

2 is a repeat. I don't think it's 100% out of the question to happen someday, but I agree it's really unlikely given societal changes in regard to how women are presented.

3. Live events are still an important source of revenue for the company and its talents, but certainly that part of the company needs to be adjusted given how attendance has been lately.
I think they could cut back untelevised shows, but maybe not that drastically given wrestlers need to stay fresh in the ring, etc.

4. For once WWE is addressing an obvious plot point! I definitely think they can do something where Renee questions the man he's become, but I wouldn't assume fans would be OK with another non-wrestler getting promo/screen time.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 12/13/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

WWE Toys for Tots a success, remembering Dynamite, why SDL match was dropped, Jarrett on WWE.com, Fast Lane set, GLOW up for SAG awards, SDL audience, and Questions on The Shield's most recent reunion, WWE becoming WCW, and promoting Crown Jewel during Evolution

Ringside Collectibles, Zack Ryder, and Curt Hawkins celebrated a big success for Toys for Tots. That's incredible!

Chris Jericho and Dave Meltzer discussed Dynamite Kid on Jericho's latest podcast.

Paige addressed Mandy Rose vs. Naomi not taking place at advertised. I'm glad they acknowledged the change in plans.

Jeff Jarrett promoted TLC.

Fast Lane 2019 will be in Ohio on March 10.

GLOW has been nominated in the Screen Actors Guild for:
- Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series (Alison Brie)
- Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
- Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series

Smackdown Live drew 1.98 million viewers Tuesday night. I can't find an instance of the show ever doing less than two million viewers for two consecutive weeks until this month.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Realistically any push they gave Roman was going to turn some part of the audience off. Of course, when they curtail his push to appease that part of the audience, the Roman supporters lose faith. They've really booked themselves in a corner trying to appeal to two such different audiences with the same product.

2. Dean came back to help Seth out in a two-on-one situation due to their bond (The Shield was united before he left). Obviously it was a short-lived alliance.

Nothing to add to 3.

4. All four men in that match were significantly older than Hogan and Savage were when those skits aired. That said, it's what the Saudis wanted and they were paying for the show!

5. It made sense for them to promote an upcoming major show, but obviously part of the audience wasn't happy about the show happening amid the controversy.

More wrestling tomorrow.

205 Live, NXT, and ROH Reax - 12/12/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's 205 Live, NXT, and ROH.

Wednesday, December 12, 2018

New Day gets USA special, promoter passes away, Interviews with Becky/DDP, NXT UK names working indie show, WWE stars on USA talk show, Final Battle extended, new Final Battle match, Raw audience, HoFer at SDL, and Questions on coming back early from concussions, Heyman working backstage, why WWE angles aren't as compelling, Ronda beating up men, and Russo feuding with dirtsheets

New Day is getting a USA Network special. "New Day's 2018 Pancake Powered Year End Super Spectacular" is airing at 10 p.m. December 19. It's worth noting instead of airing NXT in that spot as they did last year, USA got an original special made. Make of that what you will as far as NXT's perceived viability as a TV show.

- New Day's special will look back at 2018 in WWE.

Santana Garrett's father passed away. Keny G founded High Voltage Wrestling in Florida. That's unfortunate news.

Becky Lynch talked WrestleMania 35. She also teased learning a new finisher. I love how she's connecting outside the WWE bubble.

NXT UK's Wolfgang, James Drake, and Zack Gibson are working Futureshock's December 27 event, so that promotion's currently on the allowed list.

Diamond Dallas Page is on Stone Cold's latest podcast, promoting his new book.

WWE stars will appear on USA Network's Talk Stoop next week to promote "WWE Week" content. Ronda Rousey, The Bella Twins, The Miz, Nia Jax, Natalya, Maryse, and Lana are all advertised.

Final Battle has been extended to four hours, likely to give some of the top matches more time. This show could have the last ROH matches for Cody, the Young Bucks, and Christopher Daniels, so
it's good they'll all get a chance to have a fitting finale.

- Kenny King vs. Eli Isom will open the show.

Raw drew 2.19 million viewers, a further drop from consistently low audience levels. WWE is obviously aware of the problem given Seth Rollins' promo Monday, but I don't know what they're going to do to address it.

Jeff Jarrett was backstage at Smackdown Live.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Concussions are much harder to gauge than something like a broken bone or torn ligament. Alexa appeared to have fully recovered, only to learn she wasn't. They're definitely being more cautious this time.

2. Generally it's a case of him working with people his client, Brock Lesnar, might end up facing, in order to prepare them for that feud. I'm under the impression it's just special cases he takes interest in, rather than WWE assigning him to anyone.

3. The feedback for a long time was that WWE needed to cut down on talking segments and just let the wrestlers wrestle. That said, I think at this point the decision-makers are so burned out cranking out so much content each week they can't deliver what they used to be able to. They're just getting through each week with the same formula as every other week.

4. I hope Ronda beats up at least one man for every time this person sends in a question about how women are presented in wrestling.

5. It's really sad Russo is this far removed from his days in the wrestling business and he's still feuding with people. As I've said, I think it'd be best for him to put wrestling behind him and work on something new. He would almost definitely be happier.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Smackdown Live and Mixed Match Challenge Reax - 12/11/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Smackdown Live and Mixed Match Challenge.

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

NJPW announces U.S. dates, podcast notes, NXT UK star gets magazine cover, Impact WM35 event moved, NYC signing, WWE shifts comic convention lineup, Dolph standup tour, CZW event notes, Omega marathon coming, more on PCO missing HOH, another Punk-Cabana lawsuit, new TLC match, SDL match announced, NXT live events set, first WWEPC tryout names, more on Finn's absence, NXT injury, Rhyno update, and Questions on low WWE TV attendance, why Vince does the Wellness Policy, WWF without Hogan, AJ protecting himself, and The Club vs. UE

NJPW has announced U.S. shows on January 30 in California and February 1 in North Carolina. These cards will have wrestlers not on the February 2 and February 3 Japanese cards. That's another big move for the company, with some serious travel between the two days.

Charly Caruso is on Lilian Garcia's latest podcast.

NXT UK's Joe Coffey is on Muscle & Fitness. That's a big moment for him and the brand.

Impact and House of Glory's Culture Clash 19 has been moved to Saturday, April 6, so it's not going against Takeover:New York.

Joey Janela and Matt Striker had a free signing in New York City.

Tony Schiavone talked to Jason Solomon about commentary and more.

Roman Reigns and Charlotte Flair have pulled out of ACE Comic Con. Becky Lynch will be replacing Charlotte, which is perfect. I don't know what that means, if anything, for Roman's treatment.

Dolph Ziggler announced a comedy tour. I don't blame him for pursuing other endeavors for when the day comes when he's not getting paid to take bumps.

At Cage of Death 20:
- The first intermission was due to CZW officials meeting with local officials to approve certain spots.

- Atsushi Onita's spot going over the rails was unapproved, as no one was supposed to do that.

- Jimmy Rave worked as a producer. He's going to be both a producer and trainer going forward.

- Steve Mack was backstage, and could start working behind-the-scenes.

- CZW canceled their afternoon show due to state officials coming in later than expected.

- WSU should return in 2019.

- CZW will change its scheduling in 2019 to not run a select weekend each month.

- Bull James and Homicide were also backstage.

Kenny Omega will have a 10-hour AXS marathon December 28. He'll be a key figure in wrestling in 2019 whichever path he takes.

PCO pulling out of House of Hardcore this weekend was not an ROH decision. It's interesting he didn't work the show with ROH sending the Briscoes to the event. We'll see if there's any follow-up to that.

C.M. Punk is facing a second lawsuit from Colt Cabana after the first was thrown out due to the text messages regarding Cabana's legal fees being covered not counting as an enforceable contract. The new lawsuit adds allegations that Punk new WWE would come after him legally after Cabana's podcast, and Cabana would not have remained part of the lawsuit if it wasn't for Punk's offer of covering his legal fees.

TLC has added Buddy Murphy vs. Cedric Alexander for the Cruiserweight Championship. They should do great work there.

Naomi vs. Mandy Rose is set for Smackdown Live.

NXT live events have been set for:
- January 24 and January 25 in California
- February 7 in New Jersey
- February 8 in New York
- February 9 in Massachusetts
- February 10 in Rhode Island

NXT's December 12 tryouts will feature:
- Eric Spicely, former UFC middleweight fighter who has competed in New England.
- Penelope Ford, Northeastern independent star who worked both All In and NWA70.
- Courtney Lemmings, former high school volleyball player, current bodybuilder/model/actress.
- Tehuti Miles, former University of Maryland football player. He took place in a previous tryout.

Finn Balor has been pulled from Mixed Match Challenge due to an unspecified illness. He is still expected to wrestle at TLC, which is good.

Dakota Kai suffered a knee injury at an NXT show this weekend. That's unfortunate, since she's just starting to get momentum in NXT and NXT UK. Hopefully she rebounds soon.

Rhyno addressed his WWE future. I wouldn't rule out him returning as the Baron Corbin angle continues. It seems odd he'd be booked out so far in live events if he's truly wrapping up.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It was noted Raw followed an NFL game in the same market, so some fans might have chosen to go out Sunday instead of Monday. But there's definitely a larger problem of attendance being lackluster at WWE shows.

2. I can't recall anyone ever saying that about him. I think the Wellness Policy is a response to so many wrestlers passing away due to drug use. WWE doesn't want to be associated with shortened life spans due to those issues, so they're being proactive. It's absolutely a big move.

3. Whatever other options he had, I don't think any of them could have been the force Hogan was. That's not to say WWF wouldn't have still been very successful with Vince at the helm, but Hogan was a driving factor of the company becoming the force it became in the '80s.

4. He should have done so a long time ago! What does it say that he hasn't figured that out yet?

5. Possibly, but AJ, Finn, Karl, and Luke have been clearly defined at certain places on the card. It could be seen as a downgrade for AJ to work with Karl and Luke again. Ultimately it would be a matter of convincing the larger WWE Universe that these NJPW/ROH/NXT talents are worth treating seriously. I think one of the biggest problems WWE has right now is relying on fans being familiar with wrestlers' pasts and accepting them as big deals on Day One. Obviously there's a passionate fan base that's excited to see those names on a big stage, but WWE's trying to draw a wider demographic for its audience.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 12/10/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

AXS series trailer, Cena press, NXT TV debut set, Interviews with Cena/Becky, Cass-HOH plans, and Questions on Vince getting behind a women's WM main event, taking a break from wrestling, changing back to bikini contests, whether ratings matter, and if Vince will change plans with the audience dropping

AXS TV promoted WOW coming in January. I was under the impression the show was going to be goofy, but the trailer doesn't really indicate that.

John Cena and Make-A-Wish are lighting up the Empire State Building to promote his new movie.

- Cena also did the open for FOX's NFL broadcast Sunday.

Dominik Dijakovic will debut on NXT's January 19 episode. I look forward to seeing how things go for him.

John Cena discussed being a "part-timer," Roman Reigns and more:
- I think sometimes Cena wants to discuss his current project without speaking about wrestling, especially when people talk about "being over" and the like.

- It doesn't look like Cena will be back on TV yet.

- I like Cena getting why Rock's career went the way it went.

Triple H put over boxing champion Vasyl Lomachenko. I wouldn't mind seeing another boxer cross over with WWE.

Becky Lynch was on Ariel Helwani's latest show.

Big Cass was set to work with Joey Ryan at House of Hardcore this weekend. Blue Meanie replaced him.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I definitely think he'd be OK with a women's main event if he felt the match was main event worthy. I do think Ronda Rousey would be key to those plans right now, since the match would have to compete with whatever Brock Lesnar is doing, and potentially matches from Triple H, The Undertaker, and other legends.

2. Definitely. I'd be exhausted if I watched any more wrestling than I already cover. It's already pretty heavy some weeks!

3. There would definitely be outrage from some fans for the fact WWE would be hiring such talented athletes to do that kind of fluff. I think a number of women would strongly consider leaving, depending on what other options there were. They didn't sign on for those kinds of matches. Of course, there's an audience that would appreciate seeing that kind of thing come back, too.

4. Ratings still matter, but there are other factors at play, too, such as how much ad revenue WWE draws and the costs that would be involved with replacing three-to-five hours of weekly TV with something that may or may not draw the level of audience WWE draws. While I'm sure USA Network and FOX would prefer higher ratings, they knew going into the new deals what the audience level was and which direction it was moving.

5. Honestly I think the further things slip the more Vince will think he needs to exert control. After all, where were the current writers and wrestlers when business was better years back? In other words, I don't think he'll accept any blame for it. HE'S VINCE MCMAHON DAMMIT HE BEAT BILLIONAIRE TED!

More wrestling tomorrow.

Sunday, December 9, 2018

WWE Network content, Interview with Slaughter, Matt Hardy on Indian TV, 205 Live match set, former WWE star has seizure at HOH, ROH works with HOH, Helms set for another ROH show, and Questions on Catanzaro's entrance, Legends of Extreme, WWE guest hosts, Layla's WWE tenure, and how NWA operates in 2018

The Edge and Christian Show will have new episodes after Raw and TLC.

WWE Marquee Matches this week will feature:
- Beth Phoenix and Natalya vs. Laycool from TLC 2010 Tuesday at 11 p.m.
- The Wyatt Family vs. The Dudleys, Rhyno, and Tommy Dreamer from TLC 2015 Thursday at 8 p.m.
- AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor from TLC 2017 Friday at 7 p.m.

Sgt. Slaughter spoke to TMZ about Crown Jewel.

Matt Hardy was on Indian Idol. A Broken Hardy special in India could be interesting...

205 Live has added Buddy Murphy vs. Noam Dar. That should be interesting.

Big Cass was hospitalized after having a seizure at House of Hardcore's December 8 Pennsylvania event. He was originally scheduled to wrestle on the show.

ROH allowed The Briscoes to work a House of Hardcore event this weekend after PCO pulled out due to his new ROH deal. Tommy Dreamer noted he owes ROH a favor, so we'll see what that ends up being.

Hurricane Helms is set for ROH's January 13 Honorclub event in North Carolina. There's no opponent set at this time. Hopefully they get a boost for the local star.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Catanzaro has a fan base from those days and it makes sense to homage her time there.

2. I understand why people pirate WWE (not that I agree with it), but when it's a smaller company that doesn't have that level of resources, they're really hurting themselves.

3. I wouldn't be shocked if someone suggested bringing back the concept given how the audience has been lately. Generally speaking, I liked when hosts had natural charisma and both sides worked together to do interesting things. Some names just popped in to get promotion for what they were doing and didn't add anything to the show.

4. Layla had injury issues after the Laycool split and never really recovered as a character. She definitely improved quite a bit over her time in the company.

5. The NWA is essentially just one branch at this point rather than a group of members.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Main Event Reax - 12/7/18, Impact team releases Christmas book, Midnight Express on tour, Ryder Q&A, WCCW documentary available, Raw women's segment set, Becky responds to rumors, Hennig press, another Tegan surgery, MJF stripped of MLW title, Extreme DVDs coming, Bush's wrestling fandom, Bella appearance, Cena appearance, Credible arrested, WWE changes MSG card, Impact audience, former Impact champion going for NWA Championship, NXT live event notes, and Questions on WWE reaching out for a Punk return, wrestlers ROH should sign, new wrestling documentaries, and what AXXESS entails

-- Main Event:
- Breeze vs. Hawkins:
I like this so far.

Ahhhhh Hawkins ALMOST had it. 0-239.

- Ryder/B-Team vs. Mojo/Ascension:
Wow. That was quick.

Impact's KM and Fallah Bahh have released a Christmas book. That sounds bizarrely entertaining.

The Midnight Express' Jim Cornette, Bobby Eaton, and Dennis Condrey are doing a 35th anniversary signing tour beginning this weekend. This is Condrey's return to the road after defeating throat cancer.

Zack Ryder joined Christian for a Q&A episode of Edge and Christian's podcast.

The "Heroes of World Class" documentary is available from Highspots.com in limited quantities.

Alexa Bliss is holding a "press conference" on Raw with Ronda Rousey and Nia Jax. Hopefully the questions will be better than the fake audience member questions we've gotten lately.

Becky Lynch responded to reports of her TLC status.

Larry "The Axe" Hennig's passing got press in Minnesota.

Tegan Nox underwent another knee surgery to clear up some issues. She's still a long way from getting back in the ring.

MJF has been stripped of the MLW Middleweight Championship due to injury. The remaining competitors in the scheduled ladder match (Dezmond Xavier, Andrew Everett, Kotto Brazil, and Jason Cade) will now face off to crown a new champion on December 14.

Extreme Wrestling Legends will release four DVDs on December 11, honoring Public Enemy, Sabu, The Sandman, New Jack, Rob Van Dam, and Raven.

George H.W. Bush's wrestling fandom was covered.

The Bella Twins were at the Z100 Jingle Ball concert in Madison Square Garden.

John Cena was on The Graham Norton Show. Graham would belong in the WWE Hall of Fame if he took that bump.

Justin Credible has been arrested for violating a protective order, criminal mischief, assault, and breach of peace. He is being held for $50,000 bond. He's had a really rough past couple of years. I hope things turn around for him soon, because things are getting scary.

WWE's Madison Square Garden show has changed:
- John Cena is no longer advertised as wrestling, but will be appearing.
- Johnny Gargano has been removed from NXT's tag match, likely due to his heel turn.
- Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre are no longer advertised.

Impact Wrestling drew 116,000 viewers Thursday night.

James Storm will challenge for the NWA Championship on NWA's January 5 event, the night before Impact's Homecoming PPV.

At NXT's January 7 show in Wisconsin:
- Kairi Sane, Candice LeRae, and Dakota Kai defeated Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke, and Marina Shafir by disqualification. Dakota left the match early due to an unspecified injury. It's strange Candice replaced Io Shirai there given the TV angle. Io was in Florida, in a triple threat with Lacey Evans and Mia Yim. Lacey won.
- Kona Reeves was in the main event, teaming with Tommaso Ciampa in a loss to Aleister Black and Ricochet. I get he was there to take the pin, but surely they could have used Ohno or someone instead.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Braun is expected back in time for the Royal Rumble, so that won't be a factor. I think they'll call people they're on better terms with (Rock, Jericho, HBK) before they consider reaching out to Punk. Never say never, but they'd really have to be backed into a corner to try to get him back.

Nothing to add to 2 or 6.

3. No way could I compete with that list. To some degree we don't know who will break out until they get that chance.

4. VINCE MCMAHON DAMMIT. Or The Undertaker or Kane? I can't say I'd disagree with Funk or Piper, though.

5. There's no guarantee of a picture or autograph. Fans have to choose whether they want to spend time in line to meet the advertised stars vs. other attractions there.

More wrestling tomorrow.
