Main Event Reax - 6/29/18, Interviews with Adam Cole/Charlotte, WWN name on NXT, SDL Japan live event notes, Foley tapes Network special, MLW getting two-hour TV special next month, Impact audience, Vince plans big XFL investment, Ronda return update, HBK replaced at con, a lot more WWEPC tryout names, what happened after BITW, BITW dark match, and Questions on Vader in WWWF, broadcasting All In, PPVs on Sunday, another Field of Honor, and airing video packages live

- Gable vs. Kanellis:
Gable is being so wasted right now.

Chad's wrestling circles around Mike here.

Pretty fun.

- Roode/Breezango vs. Hawkins/Ascension:
Wow. Roode's already stuck on Main Event. Not a good sign.

Pretty basic stuff.

Funny ending sequence. 0-205.

ESPN covered Adam Cole's EVOLVE title defense.

Max Humberto on NXT this week won that spot due to a WWN tryout. He's currently trying out at the WWE Performance Center.

Shinsuke Nakamura was unable to compete at Smackdown Live's Japanese event. He came out on a crutch, with Samoa Joe mocking him leading to AJ confronting Joe. AJ retained the WWE Championship against Joe in the main event.

- Hideo Itami defeated Shelton Benjamin on the June 29 show.

Mick Foley did a WWE Network special about it being twenty years since his famous Hell in a Cell match, featuring Jeremy Borash and Daffney. The show will air on WWE Network in September after this year's HIAC event.

MLW Battle Riot will air on beIN Sports as a two-hour special. There was discussion about it being a traditional PPV, but ultimately they decided to do it as a longer episode. Presumably that means the MLW-beIN relationship is going quite well.

Impact drew 254,000 viewers Thursday night. We'll see if they get another boost after Slammiversary.

Vince McMahon expects to spend $500 million on XFL's first three seasons. In other words, he's incredibly dedicated to getting it off the ground. It will be significant to see what that means for WWE, as that's a very significant figure.

Ronda Rousey is expected to return the night after Extreme Rules. She'll be making her currently advertised appearances, including July 7 in Madison Square Garden. So basically she's just suspended from TV and Extreme Rules...

Shawn Michaels has been pulled from Wales Comic Con in December. The Bar and Dolph Ziggler will be appearing in his place. That's an interesting substitution.

Charlotte Flair talked to ESPN about being in their Body magazine. She's becoming quite the focal point for WWE.

The following additional names have been confirmed for WWE's recent tryouts:
- Amateur wrestlers Davin Addison, Philip Brandt, Greg Kasper, and Spencer Myers
- Basketball player Britani Birchmeier
- Rugby players Tom Dempsey and Jarryd Kinerson Smith
- Actor/gymnast/cheerleader Kelsey Hornack
- Football players Seth Manzanares, Brandon Moore, Sunny Odogwu, Omari Palmer, and Roston Tatum
- Soccer player Ricardo Miller
- Fitness model Wioletta Anna Paz
- STARDOM/WOH competitor Gabby Ortiz
- D-Von Dudley's sons Terrence and Terrell Hughes
- Impact wrestler Ava Storie
- Heidi Katrina
- Chicago independent wrestler Mike Fierro
- Omar Amir
- Dani Mo
- Colorado independent wrestler Hunter Grey
-- As always, WWE pulled from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. It will be interesting to see who joins the Performance Center from this group.

After Best in the World ended, Dalton Castle cut a promo and Cody shook his hand before helping him to the back. I'm surprised Dalton walked away with the title, although some think it's so the ROH Champion doesn't lose to the IWGP Champion in the Cow Palace. In other words, we could see a title switch before All In after all.

The Dawgs beat The Boys before Best in the World.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I don't see any record of them having a match together, so it must have been someone else.

2. That's all still coming together. This is something they're putting on with no experience while also wrestling full-time, so it's not going to be as seamless and quick as WWE does things.

3. Yes, it's so it can directly lead to Raw the next night.

4. No movement on that idea.

5. Presumably it's supposed to hype the live crowd and the TV crowd up about the feud continuing. Sometimes these video packages play so the crew can change the ring for the next segment/match.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Best in the World 2018 Reax

Read on for my thoughts on last night's ROH PPV.

Friday, June 29, 2018

WWE Studios planning more non-wrestling content, NXT:UK name working BOLA, AAA-MSG show postponed, WWE-NOAH update, NJPW U.S. notes, indie name drops title to get surgery, PROGRESS teaming with U.S. indies this summer, Alberto in lawsuit, MYC returnees confirmed, remembering Vader and HIAC, WWE tryout attendees, and Questions on Summerslam's Universal Title match, cruisers leaving Raw, Impact names as free agents, Impact still running PPVs, and why Cornette has detractors

WWE Studios is looking at doing more reality shows and documentaries after the success of the Andre the Giant HBO special. That could really be a big move for them outside the wrestling bubble.

- We could also see scripted comedies and drama shows from WWE Studios in the future. I'm curious how that would work.

NXT:UK star Travis Banks will be working PWG's Battle of Los Angeles. Presumably that's OK because the show won't be broadcast live.

AAA will likely not run MSG in 2018, as they were looking for a TV deal and sponsorship for the event. They do hope to run the venue in 2019. WWE has not sought to stop them from doing so.

Hideo Itami's NOAH match is currently the only interaction between WWE and that company. It was likely a case of NOAH making a special financial offer to use Itami for the show. We'll see if anything else comes from the two companies working together.

A NJPW mobile game is being released this summer. I'm curious how that will work out.

NJPW is planning another U.S. show, but the date and location aren't set in stone yet. They've got to be careful not to wear the crowd out. They're a long way from selling out the Cow Palace, but tickets are priced to where they'll get a large gate from the tickets already sold.

NJPW honored Vader on their June 23 show. Great to see that.

NJPW's G-1 special's final three days are having tickets available for international fans to fly in. I'm curious how that will work.

LuFisto dropped her Shine championship to undergo surgery next month. I hope for the best for her.

PROGRESS will tour with EVOLVE and Defy in August.

Alberto El Patron is involved in a lawsuit relating to a November 2016 incident at a karaoke bar, where both sides claim they were injured in a brawl resulting from a fan approaching Paige for a picture and Paige telling her no. This escalated into a physical altercation between Alberto and a male friend of the female fan where Alberto alleges he had a concussion and lacerations to the head due to a glass being thrown at him. The other party also said he needed medical attention after the incident.

Toni Storm, Mia Yim, Mercedes Martinez, and Rhea Ripley have all been confirmed for the second Mae Young Classic. I REALLY want to see them pick Yim up this year.

Jim Cornette discussed Vader on his most recent podcast.

Mick Foley and official Tim White remembered Mankind's famous 1998 Hell in a Cell match.

At WWE's most recent Performance Center tryouts:
- Chelsea Green/Laurel Van Ness
- Max Castor, a Northeastern star trained by Curt Hawkins and Pat Buck
- Duke football player Shaquille Powell
- Robbie E
- Former NFL players TJ Barnes and Dorin R. Dickerson
- La Rosa Negra
- Rory Gulak (Drew's brother)
- 3.0 (Scott Parker and Big Magic/Shane Matthews)
- Thomas Sharpe/Blaster McMassive
- Jake Omen
- Duke wrestler Jacob Kasper
- Adam Payne, an independent wrestler from New Jersey
- Wardlow
- Former football player and YouTube name Brendan Griffin
- Max Castellanos, an independent wrestler from Texas

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I think we're in for Roman vs. Brock, with Braun potentially cashing in to prevent a riot.

2. It works out better for both sides not to have meaningless matches and 30-second promos on Raw. Now the cruiserweights are more special and we get to see some underutilized Raw talents more on their show.

3. Impact actually encourages it in a sense because if talent can keep working other dates, too, they're likely to stay with Impact on the occasions they run tapings and shows.

4. I'm under the impression they still have contracts in international markets that require them to put on a certain number of PPVs a year. Most of this is covered by One Night Only events, but they occasionally do a bigger show, too.

5. Anyone that loud and opinionated is going to alienate people. Then there's the whole threatening to kill Vince Russo and Brock Lesnar/slapping Sanitno business. It's definitely not just "he tells it like it is." The man is volatile.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 6/28/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Thursday, June 28, 2018

Possible ER matches announced, Owens meets Shania, WWE conference call, WWE guests, podcast notes, Balor bruised, SDL audience, latest Hidden Gem, big milestone for Maryse, NXT:UK matches released, and Questions on the champion coming out second, ROH and AAA in MSG, doing the MITB match before AJ/Shinsuke, Jazzy returning for the MYC, and Impact moving TV homes

Extreme Rules' arena is advertising Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens in a steel cage, along with Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental Championship. However, they're also advertising a multi-man match with the winner facing Brock Lesnar, which was canceled Monday night, so it's possible the other matches are based on outdated information as well.

Kevin Owens escorted Shania Twain onstage for a Montreal concert. The singer promised to play his favorite song next time she's at the venue if he can beat Braun Strowman. I'm glad that ended up somewhat coming together for Owens. I doubt he'll get that wish, though, if that's her condition.

WWE did a conference call after announcing their new TV deals, covered here:
- I expect we'll see something else in the vein of MMC at some point.

- I fully expect the new TV deals to be used to fund further projects like NXT:UK, new talent signings, etc.

- Amazon and Facebook are definitely interested in WWE content. We'll see what things look like five years from now as far as that goes.

- FOX does reportedly plan to promote WWE content during other shows in order to make the show a destination, especially as part of a heavier sports focus.

GLOW's Alison Brie posted a photo from backstage at Smackdown Live. I'm glad we got to see them on WWE TV.

Steve Austin was on Chris Jericho's latest podcast, largely discussing music.

The former Enzo Amore is on Stone Cold's latest podcast, talking about his release and more.

Danielle Fishel put Lio Rush over backstage at 205 Live. Lio's debut was entertaining.

Stephen Graham talked about Moustache Mountain. I assume they'll be an important part of NXT:UK going forward.

Finn Balor got a serious bruise on his tailbone from Baron Corbin during Raw. OOUUUUCCCHHHHH.

Smackdown Live drew 2.14 million viewers Tuesday night, the lowest non-holiday episode since last June. The summer slump is definitely here.

Rich Swann was on Impact Wrestling's latest conference call. I hope he makes the most of this chapter of his career.

Shawn Michaels' upcoming DVD lineup has been released. That's quite the list of content.

Maryse has officially become an American citizen. That's big for her.

WWE Network's latest Hidden Gem is Sgt. Slaughter vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan from 1981.

NXT:UK released Amir Jordan vs. Joseph Conners and Ligero vs. Mike Hitchman, which were taped before the content shown on the recent specials.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I'm fine with them saving the person who's going to get the biggest pop for second, especially since they're openly acknowledging the show is sports entertainment, etc.

2. Both companies want to run the bigger part of the arena that WWE usually runs.

3. It made sense to focus on the conclusion of the AJ/Shinsuke feud without that added element.

4. It definitely makes sense to use her again and give her more time, and potentially sign her outright. They were going to last time before discovering her injury.

5. I'd also be surprised to see them get a better U.S. TV home anytime soon. They're not a hot commodity as a show right now.

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT and ROH Reax - 6/27/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's NXT and ROH.

Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Rey announced for 2K19, WWE star working NOAH, assorted wrestling press, ROH conference call, Impact's parent company names new sports COO, Raw audience, WWE makes TV deals official, WWE roster change, why Shinsuke missed SDL, SDL guests, Vader book update, Kane-WWE update, and Questions on WWE not pulling the trigger on Shinsuke, international WWE commentary, Punk suing Amann, FOX asking for SDL exclusive PPVs, and WWE licensing Impact and ROH for the Network

Rey Mysterio was officially unveiled as a pre-order bonus character for WWE 2K19. Ronda Rousey is also expected to be announced as a special edition character.

Hideo Itami will face Naomichi Marufuji in NOAH on September 1 for Marufuji's 20th anniversary event. Itami will be working under his old ring name of KENTA for the show. That's a really cool opportunity for both sides, and could be the start of further crossover.

Highspots.com is running a documentary on the original Championship Wrestling from Florida. WWE owns the territory's library.

The Philadelphia Phillies are holding a WWE Night Friday, featuring a WWE-themed championship T-shirt. I'm surprised no WWE talents/ambassadors are appearing.

ROH did a conference call to promote Best in the World, covered here:
- Has Bully added any ticket sales to ROH events, any Honorclub subscriptions, etc., in this comeback run? So far it seems like just another Bully ego-stroke.

- I'm split on intergender matches. I'd like to see them focus on WOH by itself for now.

- WWE pushing the Emmalina gimmick at the expense of something Emma did well understandably soured that relationship. I don't blame her for being happy to focus on the in-ring stuff now, and otherwise being in the driver's seat.

- I expect Dalton's dropping the title to Cody to set up a title vs. title match at All In.

- If he could afford to take the time off, surgery might be the right move.

Impact's parent company has named a new chief operating officer for their sports and entertainment division, which of course includes Impact. This isn't expected to change the structure of Impact's management at this time.

Raw drew 2.67 million viewers this week, a good drop from last week's post-MITB episode.

WWE officially announced their upcoming TV deals with USA Network and FOX. They have big financial expectations for the years ahead as a result of these agreements.

- WWE's stock broke records once again after this news released, passing $77.00 a share.

Noam Dar is believed to be moving to NXT:UK from 205 Live, due to his surprise return at the recently-broadcast shows. I hope he can shine there.

Shinsuke Nakamura has been pulled from the ring as a result of being bitten by a law enforcement dog before Monday's Smackdown Live live event as part of a pre-show security check. Nakamura was backstage during Smackdown Live, but was not cleared. I really hope he's part of a dog collar match or something at Extreme Rules now.

Chavo Guerrero was backstage at Smackdown Live. He worked on the GLOW series, so he was there with that cast.

- Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga on "Boy Meets World," also attended Smackdown Live. She was shown on camera before Lio Rush's 205 Live match.

Vader's autobiography will be finished by his son. There's no timetable for its release.

"350 Days" was profiled before its theatrical release.

"Death of the Territories" will be released on September 13.

Kane made a surprise return on Smackdown Live, reuniting with Daniel Bryan to challenge the Bludgeon Brothers at Extreme Rules. Kane's mayoral campaign is continuing. I assume this is just him checking something off his bucket list before potentially taking on a new career. It's cool to see it happen, though.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. They preferred AJ as a babyface and champion. And really, I can't blame them. Shinsuke hasn't shown he can be a headliner, or really that he can adapt to being a WWE superstar. They've given Shinsuke quite a few opportunities as a top guy, too, with him challenging for the WWE Championship at the second-biggest show of 2017 four months after debuting on Smackdown Live and winning the Royal Rumble. All in all, he's been in six WWE Title matches on PPVs/Network specials in the past 14 months. If that's a burial, what does a push look like???

2. He came back as WWE expanded international commentating.

3. I would definitely understand if he countersued, but I would also understand if he wants to move on with his life after such a long ordeal.

4. Hmmm. I would think they could ask for that, but wouldn't assume they will.

5. Impact and ROH would definitely be interested in getting paid to air their content on WWE Network. I don't know if it'd be worth it on WWE's part to potentially grow subscriptions, but that could definitely go well for those two groups.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Smackdown Live and 205 Live Reax - 6/26/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's SDL and 205 Live.

Tuesday, June 26, 2018

NXT:UK trademark, NJPW shows Vader match, another Impact Twitch card set, Interviews with Abyss/Charlotte/Vader's son/Dunne+Bate/AJ+Carmella/Bayley, rope breaks at Raw live event, top Impact name re-signs, possible HIAC main events, Extreme Rules match dropped, and Questions on the Universal Title picture, Elias not winning the IC Title, and Ronda wrestling on TV

WWE is trademarking "British Strong Style," which is PROGRESS' name for the trio of Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, and Trent Seven. So I'd expect them to work together more in NXT:UK going forward.

NJPW released a Vader vs. Stan Hansen match. Those clashes are legendary.

Impact Wrestling is doing a Twitch event with Tennessee's Next Generation Wrestling on August 19. They're doing a good job creating content for the service.

Abyss discussed the state of Impact and more. I don't see running pay-per-views as being as important in 2018, at least in the traditional sense. Twitch and the Global Wrestling Network should probably be their priorities instead.

Charlotte Flair spoke with ESPN. Pretty good piece.

- Stephanie McMahon promoted the photoshoot.

Vader's son discussed his father's relationship with Sting.

Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate pitched being in WWE 2K19. They've definitely been on-screen enough to warrant that. I don't envy 2K having to add so many fresh faces in the years to come as WWE expands beyond Raw, Smackdown Live, NXT, and 205 Live.

The top rope broke during a Raw live event this weekend. It's a sign of how good those guys are that they were able to keep going regardless.

Eli Drake has signed a new long-term contract with Impact Wrestling. WWE had been interested in bringing him back to NXT, but he opted to stay where he is now. This could definitely mean he'll be a featured player going forward.

AJ Styles and Carmella appeared on Australian TV to promote Super Show-down. I'm curious which of them will still be champion when that event rolls around.

Bayley did a Q&A before Raw.

Hell in a Cell was promoted with AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens. Plans, as always, can change.

Extreme Rules' Raw main event has been dropped. The multi-man match that was designed to declare Brock Lesnar's next contender has been removed from the card due to "negotiations regarding Brock's next title defense." So, that whole situation is up in the air going forward.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
Nothing to add to 1 or 5.

2. WWE doesn't seem to know what they're doing at Extreme Rules, so seemingly pretty much anything can happen now!

3. We'll see what it all leads to. They could certainly have done more with Elias the last few months, though.

4. Given that she's willing to work live events and her deal isn't quite like Brock's, I think it will happen at some point. She's been very impressive so far!

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 6/25/18

Read on for my take on last night's Raw.

Monday, June 25, 2018

Main Event Reax - 6/24/18, Stephanie promotes WWE Emmy nods, Super Show-Down hyped, Raw and SDL live event notes, former WCW star passes, Takeover injury, title match on SDL, Heyman takes shots at Brock competition, NXT title match on indie show, and Questions on Rousey's rise, women closing MITB, Vader's best match, why Raw and SDL aren't like NXT and NJPW, and NJPW selling out the Cow Palace

-- Main Event:
- Nese vs. Metalik:
Solid start.

Nice back and forth here.

Gran's always impressive.

Pretty good!

- Authors vs. Breezango:
Breeze is just getting stomped here.

I'm liking this. Breeze and Dango are bumping and moving for the big guys.

Not bad at all.

Stephanie McMahon promoted Raw 25, Mixed Match Challenge, and WWE 24: Empowered being up for Emmys.

AJ Styles and Carmella went to Australia to promote Super Show-Down.

SAnitY attacked Sin Cara and Primo at a live event this weekend. I doubt anyone was that upset they didn't get to see those two face off. I look forward to seeing SAnitY on SDL.

Former WCW star and Micro Championship Wrestling owner Johnny Attitude passed away at the age of 53. I wish his family and friends well.

Oney Lorcan suffered a broken orbital bone at Takeover:Chicago, and will need surgery as a result. That's brutal. I hope he's able to return soon.

Jeff Hardy vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE United States Championship is set for Smackdown Live. That'd be the perfect time to give Shinsuke some momentum and let Jeff heal his pinched nerve.

Paul Heyman essentially cut a Facebook promo on Brock Lesnar's next challenger, specifically targeting Bobby Lashley. Heyman's a master at this.

- Lashley responded, then Roman responded to his response. Good work from everyone.

Adam Cole retained the NXT North American Championship against WALTER in EVOLVE in front of the live crowd. WWE is willing to let its contracted names appear for other companies, but not on air.

Ronda Rousey got a "reprieve" to work live events this weekend, teaming with Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Dana Brooke in a victory over Alexa Bliss and the Riott Squad.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. She's definitely the best rookie I've seen in 15+ years. She's making the most of her opportunities in the ring.

2. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20. WWE was understandably hesitant to put two people so relatively new to wrestling in the final match of the show rather than more experienced names.

3. That's probably the most popular pick for his best match.

4. A lot of it is WWE having to do so much content each week with no off-season. NXT tapes several one-hour episodes at a time while NJPW pretty much just does events. Also, Raw and Smackdown Live are "family friendly variety shows" and booked as such. None of that is changing anytime soon unless ratings drop so much NBCU and FOX tell them to change. And even then, I doubt either party will say "make your product like NXT or NJPW." I doubt either of them know what NJPW is, and NXT's sole episode on USA drew less than a million viewers.

5. They've got a tough road ahead of them, because it hasn't been that long since they ran the same area for SSE and a lot of fans have chosen All In over that event. With no Chris Jericho or Rey Mysterio on the show, there's a ceiling to what they can draw.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Bikertaker on WWE Network, Vader tribute, Interview with Shinsuke+Becky, NXT:UK transforms venue, Zayn's replacement, and Questions on Batista returning to WWE and WWE fighting games

"Something Else to Wrestle With" this week will discuss The Undertaker's time as "The American Badass" and "Big Evil." WWE has generally avoided featuring those years of Taker's career, as they broke away from his usual gimmick.

WWE released a Vader tribute video that will likely precede Raw and Smackdown Live this week. WWE always excels with those.

Shinsuke Nakamura and Becky Lynch were interviewed at the ACE Comic-Con. Lilian Garcia's podcast will return soon, so we'll hear more interviews from her shortly.

WWE showed footage of the creation of the NXT:UK venue. It's a lot of work, and they do it multiple times a week!

Baron Corbin replaced Sami Zayn on Raw live events this weekend, teaming with Kevin Owens and Jinder Mahal in losses to Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, and Bobby Lashley.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
Nothing to add to 1 through 4.

5. He would like to have a final run, likely to work with Triple H, but the Kurt Angle feud superseded that. The last I heard, he had decided if he wasn't going to have run going into WM35, he was just going to retire and accept their Hall of Fame nod.

6. The MK developers made "WWE Immortals" for mobile apps a few years back, which has exaggerated versions of WWE superstars. There had been attempts to do WWE fighting games in the past, including one similar to Super Smash Bros., but they never came to pass. I'd think there'd be a market for something like that.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Saturday, June 23, 2018

Henry appearing on indie shows, NXT:UK streams round one, Konnan back in the ring, Hogan managing Dream?, Interview with Hogans, Rusev Day on Comedy Central, new ROH TV matches, Regal update, MSG-AAA update, more AAA-U.S. plans, ROH PPV moving to bigger venue, Impact audience, Vader collection on Network, Taker and Rousey's MSG roles, Sea of Honor lineups, NXT live event note, and Questions on how much WWE writers make, why NXT UK shows aren't live, WWE's plans for NOAH, and why the Mid-Atlantic Fanfest has been absent

Mark Henry will appear at Canadian Wrestling's Elite on August 4, where I assume he'll be scouting talent. This way the promotion gets the boost of his appearance. It's not like he could just hang out in the crowd or backstage without everyone talking about it!

- Henry will also appear at Northeast Wrestling's August 24 meet-and-greet event alongside Rey Mysterio, Renee Young, and Corey Graves. I assume NEW paid what WWE would pay those contracted names on their own events, and that's how they were able to book them.

NXT:UK streamed all of the first round tournament matches back-to-back Friday on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. I hope that's good promotion for the upcoming specials.

Konnan will step back in the ring for MLW's July 19 Battle Riot event. This is his first match in five years and follows his hip replacement surgery. I expect this to lead to further matches from Konnan as he looks to revitalize AAA.

Hulk Hogan sought to manage Velveteen Dream after Dream's homage at Takeover:Chicago, but Velveteen shot him down. Dream definitely needs to make his own way in the business rather than being Hogan's on-air protégé.

Hulk Hogan's children discussed Vader's passing.

Rusev's gauntlet match win was covered on Comedy Central.

ROH's June 29 TV taping has added:
- Hung Bucks vs. LIJ's BUSHI, EVIL, and SANADA
- Sumie Sakai vs. Hazuki for the Women of Honor Championship
- Tenille Dashwood vs. Madison Rayne vs. Kelly Klein vs. Madison Rayne to determine the No. 1 contender to the Women of Honor Championship
- Oedo Tai (Kagetsu and Hana Kimura) vs. Mayu Iwatani and Jenny Rose
-- So, heavy WOH involvement and confirmation Madison isn't locked down to an Impact deal. Nice to see regular use of Japanese talents.

William Regal was not at the most recent NXT taping due to a last minute decision not to bring him back. He's dealing with an unspecified issue that is keeping him from working. Hopefully everything gets on track for him soon.

AAA still has plans to run Madison Square Garden. They're currently looking at running either that venue or Las Vegas on September 16. If they run Las Vegas in September, they'll try to hold a show in Madison Square Garden either later in the Fall or in early 2019. So, WWE is just blocking ROH from running the venue at present, likely because ROH was seeking to run during WM35 weekend.

ROH has announced Death Before Dishonor XVI and the following TV taping for the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on September 28 and September 29, their debut in the venue. They normally run the 1,200-capacity Sam's Town Live, but The Orleans drew more than 2,000 fans for GFW's 2015 Amped tapings, so this is a chance to have a pretty impressive house.

Impact Wrestling drew 262,000 viewers this week.

WWE Network has added a Vader collection. I really, really hope a Hall of Fame induction is coming next.

Raw's Madison Square Garden event currently has the following lineup:
- The Undertaker, Roman Reigns, and Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens, Baron Corbin, and Elias
- Ronda Rousey vs. Nia Jax with Alexa Bliss as the special referee
- Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor for the Intercontinental Championship
-- Brock Lesnar is not advertised for the event. It's believed he only has one match left on his contract, so they're likely saving that for Summerslam.
-- There's currently no word of this show being on WWE Network, and I don't expect that will happen.

The Sea of Honor tournament bracket has been released. I'm surprised to see BJ Whitmer on the show, but he's presumably going out in the first round.

China's Boa and Rocky teamed in a loss to The Mighty at June 22's NXT Florida live event. Neither of them had been in action in at least a month.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. That figure is only if you last a full year! Definitely have some backup plans.

2. They also wanted to hold out until after MITB so the shows wouldn't get lost in the shuffle.

3. As was hinted at, this is probably step one in either NXT:Japan or NXT:Asia. Even if they don't outright purchase NOAH, they can use it as a feeder system for that project. Before that, we could see NOAH talents pop up in "NXT America" or whatever we're calling the main NXT now, and then potentially a championship tournament and the like on the way to eventually having regular events there under the WWE/NXT banner.

4. Basically the audience and the guests get older and less numerous, so it's not what it used to be.

Nothing to add to 5.

WWE-ROH showdown over MSG, NJPW tournament airing in English, why Cass was released, WWE Australia attendance goal, new NXT:UK signings, Rey-NJPW update, MLW PPV coming?, new Pro Wrestling HoF honorees, former DX name injured, another top name for All In, Impact PPV price cut, Australian promotion on GWN, WWE 2K19 bonuses, Charlotte under the knife, WWE signs working agreement with Japanese company, MITB women's notes, MYC name update, Raw star cleared, latest plans for injured Raw name, WWE planning big "indie" show, Authors back in action, more SMW on the Network, assorted WWE press, GLOW documentary, Summerslam weekend cruise, Aries' BITW opponent set, ROH TV match, All In documentary, Zayn sees major setback, NXT name misses taping, and Questions on MLW's video archive, both brand's announce teams staying at ringside, every wrestler doing all their moves each match, ratings for MLW and NJPW, and how NJPW names would do in WWE

Madison Square Garden was set to hold Supercard of Honor the night before WrestleMania 35 before WWE stepped in. Reportedly, there was an agreement in place for the event, but the contract hadn't been signed yet. I can see why WWE would be upset with such a major event being in the area at the same time as Takeover.

- ROH's parent company is weighing legal options. MSG believed they could back out because a contract had not been signed yet, but Sinclair feels that wouldn't hold up in court.

- Sinclair owns quite a few FOX affiliates, and could look to preempt Smackdown Live in those markets in favor of local programming if this drags on into 2019. That could really put the two sides on a serious collision course.

NJPW will air the entire G-1 tournament in English on New Japan World, with Kevin Kelly staying in Japan the whole month. That's another big move in trying to gain international fans.

- Cody will be missing that tournament due to an acting project.

Big Cass was not originally set to lose by submission twice to Daniel Bryan, but he was being punished for, among other things, going off-script in the segment with the little person.

- Cass was fired backstage at Smackdown Live due to that segment as well as blowing off rehearsal for a promo that ended up going long. Vince thoroughly disliked that promo. There was also heat from an incident where Cass was locked in the bathroom of the tour bus in Europe and broke the door down because he thought he was being pranked.

- Indie promoters are already looking at reuniting Cass with the former Enzo Amore despite the real falling out they had after Enzo's response to Cass being injured during a match they had.

WWE Super Show-Down in Australia is being set up for 70,000 fans. The venue can seat up to 100,000. The previous records for the venue have been well under 60,000, so I don't think it's a stretch to limit the capacity that much.

NXT:UK has signed Eddie Dennis and Nina Samuels.

Rey Mysterio has several matches left on his NJPW contract, so he's unlikely to jump to WWE just yet.

MLW is looking to do a PPV on July 19 for a show featuring a 40-man Battle Riot in addition to Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith, Jr. vs. ACH and Rich Swann. That could really be notable for them!

Owen Hart and Dan Severn are being inducted into the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in Iowa. Great to see both men honored.

Billy Gunn was recently injured, missing an independent show booking. It's amazing he's still getting work at 54.

Kota Ibushi has been announced for All In. I hope he can continue to grow as a star.

Slammiversary is seeing a big price drop on Fite TV. It's at $19.99 where Redemption was $39.99. We'll see if the streaming price will match the broadcast price. It's got to be insanely tough to get 40 bucks for one show when you can get the award-winning WWE Network for only $9.99 a month.

The Global Wrestling Network will now feature Australia's World Series Wrestling library, including shows being taped this week. That explains Impact promoting their tour.

Ronda Rousey will be the pre-order bonus character for WWE 2K19. I'm shocked she's not the centerpiece of the advertising. Rey Mysterio is also in the game. I'd like to think those names will lead to an increase in people buying the game.

Charlotte Flair had surgery for her ruptured breast implant. She'll be back in time for the build to Summerslam.

WWE and Pro Wrestling NOAH have signed a working agreement, allowing Hideo Itami to work an event on August 29. That's a really big move, and has got to be seen in some sense as competing with NJPW in the region. We'll see if this affects Impact's agreement with NOAH in any way. I expect the long-term plan is to do "NXT:Asia" or something of the sort and this is the beginning of that.

Finlay and Tyson Kidd were producers for the women's matches at MITB. The women didn't work live events that weekend so they could lay out their matches and practice for the PPV.

Japan's Meiko Satomura is set to be part of the Mae Young Classic. She's been heavily praised for her work.

Alicia Fox has been cleared to return to the ring. We'll see what's next for her.

Jason Jordan is now tentatively scheduled to come back in July. I hope they have something decent in mind for him. Maybe he'll feud with Constable Corbin?

WWE is considering doing an "independent" Network special in 2019 featuring talent not under contract, presumably primarily from places WWE has working agreements with. It's amazing they're essentially creating an in-house territories system.

The Authors of Pain are back on the road for Raw after their visa issue. Hopefully we see them back on TV soon.

WWE Network's latest Hidden Gem featured Chris Candido vs. Boo Bradley in Smoky Mountain Wrestling before they worked against each other in ECW.

Zack Ryder was at Funko. I'm glad he's getting to do that role for those companies, since he's not doing a lot on TV.

The original GLOW is the subject of a Fite TV documentary hosted by Gene Okerlund. It's pretty crazy seeing a revival of interest in that product.

Summerslam weekend will feature a live wrestling cruise, beating Chris Jericho to the punch. It's an interesting idea. I'm curious if it will become more of a regular thing in the years to come.

WWE promoted the Mae Young Classic's return with a press release.

Austin Aries will face Kenny King at Best in the World. What does it say that Impact's World Champion is so low on the card?? The match should be great, though.

KUSHIDA vs. Jonathan Gresham is official for ROH's June 29 TV taping. That should be solid, as well.

Brie Bella promoted "Total Bellas."

Cody and the Young Bucks put together a documentary explaining the origins of All In as part of Cody launching a YouTube channel. These guys are changing the direction of the business and really making things happen.

Sami Zayn is undergoing surgery for two torn rotator cuffs, and is expected to be out until around the time for WrestleMania 35. That's a really big setback for him. I hope these are his final injuries and he goes on to have a big career from here on out.

Tucker Knight missed Thursday night's NXT taping due to his daughter being born. Best wishes to him and his family going forward.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. They're focusing on going forward instead of looking back, but they can definitely use that footage at some point.

2. They're still there. Otherwise it would be a distraction for them to keep going back and forth. They presumably get directions in their earpieces during that time, too.

3. It does feel like a lot of spots are in a lot of matches, but a good deal of that comes from there being so many wrestlers having longer matches being broadcast now. And of course a lot of wrestlers now are smaller and more athletic, so they all blend in compared to when there was a greater variety of body types and styles on display.

4. Neither channel has a big enough reach to be picked up by Nielsen. That could certainly change at some point, though, as AXS in particular expands to more homes. We do know AXS is very pleased with NJPW ratings, but not specific numbers.

5. Firstly, TAKA was booked that way because Vince Russo didn't value foreign wrestlers as anything beyond lower-level jobbers. Plus, that was 21 years ago. Things have changed a lot. Anyway, for these talents, the bigger the price it will take to get each talent to WWE, the more apt WWE is to push them to get their money's worth. But specifically:

a. Okada could almost certainly do well given his accomplishments so far. I think he'll probably be better served to wait until he's an even bigger international star before coming over, but I think he stands a decent chance at having a good run, since he's already a star.

b. Tanahashi, already 41, would almost certainly go right to the main roster and probably do OK for himself. I don't think they'd push him as the future of the company or anything, but I'd like to think he could have a couple good years in him.

c. Naito could do pretty well for himself. Again, not face of the company well, but I think he'd be treated as someone they can make money from if they figure out his appeal.

d. WWE pretty much always gets behind Samoans. Haku's children would get a fair chance to show what they can do in the WWE system.

e. He'd do well in NXT, and hopefully OK enough on the main roster as something of a comedy figure who can wrestle well.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Vader passes away at 63

Vader passed away Monday night due to a strong bout of pneumonia. The former WCW World Champion was 63 years old. He was absolutely a groundbreaking big man and a legendary figure. He fought his health problems as long as he could.

PWInsider.com covered the entirety of Vader's life and career.

The following personalities, among others, remembered Vader on social media:
- Ariya Daivari
- Big E
- Booker T.
- Bruce Prichard
- Bully Ray
- Chris Sabin
- Drake Maverick
- D-Von Dudley
- Frankie Kazarian
- Heath Slater
- Impact Wrestling
- The Iron Sheik
- James Ellsworth
- JBL
- Joseph Conners
- Lio Rush
- Matt Hardy
- Mick Foley
- Nia Jax
- Nick Aldis
- NWA
- Road Dogg
- Rob Schamberger
- Samoa Joe
- Scott Dawson
- Scotty Riggs
- Sting
- Tommy Dreamer
- Triple H
- WWE
- WWE India
- Zack Ryder

Hulk Hogan was interviewed by Bill Apter about Vader.

Jim Ross discussed Vader on his most recent podcast.

Jerry Lawler commented on Vader's passing.

"Boy Meets World" stars Danielle Fishel and Ethan Suplee commented on Vader passing.

Sean Waltman discussed Vader on The Tomorrow Show with Keven Undergaro.

WWE seeking international hosts, Cena sells lawsuit, big Roode milestone, another UK contendership match, HBK discusses WWEPC, SDL audience, All In airing update, new BITW title match, and Questions on Braun as the new Andre, Show not getting over like Braun, why gimmick wrestlers make it out of NXT before indie darlings, and smiling babyfaces

WWE is seeking on-air talent to be their faces of social media in India and Latin America. Basically someone like a Cathy Kelley for each region. I expect further markets to scout for similar roles as time goes on.

John Cena and Ford settled their lawsuit with the funds going to charity. I'm glad that that's taken care of.

Bobby Roode celebrated 20 years in the wrestling business. He's changed quite a bit since then!

NXT:UK released Jordan Devlin vs. Tyson T-Bone from their ongoing contendership tournament.

Shawn Michaels discussed the WWE Performance Center while in the UK. I wouldn't rule out seeing a UK performance center (and eventually other regions) down the line.

Smackdown Live drew 2.32 million viewers Tuesday night, presumably getting a boost from following Money in the Bank.

All In will be broadcast in some form. That was a no-brainer given the demand for seeing it.

Punishment Martinez vs. Hangman Page for the ROH Television Championship in a Baltimore Street Fight is official for Best In The World. That's been built pretty well. I'm curious if it will lead to one or both of them facing Austin Aries.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. To a degree, but I don't think he's been as dominantly as Andre was. I hope he does become world champion, though.

2. Damn. Way to bury Show. I think some of it was as his career went on, he became less of an attraction because we had seen him for years. Then there's the 5,000 heel/face turns, moving up and down the card so much, etc. He was a pretty big deal at first, but there were a lot of talented guys getting over at the same time then.

3. I expect both shows will be "A" shows.

4. "Gimmick" wrestlers are just competing for a fairly low-level spot rather than being seen as a potential future titleholder. They can get over with dancing or singing or whatever, so it's not as big of a deal when they lose. And sometimes it's valuable to have some talented veterans in NXT to work with the people who are still putting things together. Honestly, if/when Kassius gets called up, I expect him to move into a similar role rather than being pushed.

5. WWE superstars are part of a sports entertainment family-friendly variety show that puts smiles on people's faces! The sooner people realize it's marketed at the Disney audience, the better.

More wrestling coming up.

NXT and ROH Reax - 6/20/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's NXT and ROH.

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

HHH promotes NXT:UK, Summerslam contest, Sasha the subject of new song, another UK tournament match, Lilian podcast update, WWE on preliminary Emmy ballot, Charlotte in ESPN issue, MSG reverses course with ROH, Cena potentially honored for humanitarianism, SDL star released, NXT return, Ronda still on live events, NXT:UK injury, Raw audience, Rey negotating with WWE, Taker joins social media (seriously), and Questions on USA and FOX asking for WWE changes, HHH booking Raw and SDL, NXT surpassing Raw and SDL, and Haku in the WWEHOF

Triple H promoted NXT:UK on Good Morning Britain. I'll buy a plane ticket and attend myself if he pedigrees Piers Morgan.

WWE is doing a Summerslam trip contest.

Sasha Banks is the subject of a song by The Mountain Goats, at Sasha's request. I guess you get that kind of treatment when you're The Boss.

NXT:UK released Tucker vs. Joe Coffey from the first round of their tournament.

Lilian Garcia's podcast will return with a new format and new home in July. She's gotten a lot of women interviews on "Chasing Glory."

WWE got press for running a new venue in Atlantic City. Hopefully that goes well for both sides.

WWE got the following shows on preliminary Emmy ballots:
-- Best Documentary or Non-Fiction Special:
- WWE 24: Empowered
- Andre the Giant

-- Outstanding Structured Reality Program:
- Monday Night Raw
- Mixed Match Challenge

-- Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program:
- Total Bellas
- Total Divas

-- Outstand Variety Special (Live):
- WrestleMania 34

- That's a very big step for the company, and a further confirmation they see themselves as "variety shows" and "reality programs" rather than sports.

Charlotte Flair will be in ESPN magazine's Body Issue on sale June 29. That's a big honor.

Sami Zayn has been written off in order to have an injury diagnosed. His one-sided feud with Lashley was designed to allow him to take time off at its conclusion. Hopefully he's back and doing something better soon.

Madison Square Garden has reversed course regarding ROH running the facility following discussions with WWE. ROH has indicated their lawyers will be contacting the other parties about how to go forward. I admire ROH standing up and trying to do what's best for their fans. If WWE's not using the venue on the date in question, MSG should be free to have someone else run it or should be compensated for not being able to have other wrestling events there.

John Cena is a finalist for ESPN's Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian of the Year Award. That's a great honor, and well deserved with all of his Make-A-Wish appearances.

Big Cass has been released by WWE. He was backstage at Smackdown Live, but cut before the taping began. Cass had heat for going off-script during the attack of a little person during his feud with Daniel Bryan, and there had been reports of him yelling at producers and spitting at fans during a live event in Texas. Additionally, he was pulled from some dates of WWE's European tour. WWE notably didn't "wish him the best in his future endeavors," confirming the split wasn't amicable. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here, as I wouldn't expect other promotions to rush to work with someone who had those issues on the way out.

William Regal should return at this week's NXT taping. That's good. I hope everything's going well with him.

Ronda Rousey will continue to appear on live events she's been advertised for during her "suspension." So I guess she's too dangerous for TV but not live events.

NXT:UK's Jinny has been pulled from work due to a concussion. I hope she's able to make a splash on the brand once it gets going.

Raw drew 2.90 million viewers Monday night, getting a boost from following Money in the Bank. We'll see how things go without Ronda on-air.

Rey Mysterio is negotiating a three-year deal with WWE. Time will tell what the terms will be, but it's something being discussed.

The Undertaker has joined Instagram in something I'm very surprised to see. I'm glad he's reached a place where he doesn't feel he has to be so protective of his on-screen character anymore.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. They can certainly push for certain directions and moves since they're the ones paying the bills. They're not going over every segment or anything, but they occasionally ask for certain names (McMahons) to be featured.

2. There's a world of difference between booking one special every few months and a TV taping every few weeks in front of 400 fans compared to booking five hours of TV a week and a PPV every month, where ratings and attendance dictate everything. Triple H can run his department with multimillion dollar deficits because Vince has given him more or less a blank check. Plus, people rarely have the opportunity to get stale or lost in the shuffle in NXT before moving on. People expecting Raw and SDL to be NXT Monday and NXT Friday in five years are deluding themselves. All that said, I do think we'll see some changes in what the product looks like when Vince is out of the picture. We're already there to some degree with the stars being featured and pushed now. Obviously there are some changes when people come up to make them "WWE superstars," but we're a long way from where things were before Triple H took over developmental.

3. I doubt it, given the demographics of TV compared to the fan base of NXT. And as was hinted at, "sports entertainment" has a broader appeal than old school wrestling.

4. I wouldn't rule it out as the years go on. Currently he has three sons in NJPW, so I don't think WWE's in a rush to acknowledge him. If they end up coming to WWE, that could easily change.

Nothing to add to 5.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Smackdown and 205 Live Reax - 6/19/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Smackdown Live and 205 Live.

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

WWE star assaulted, top WWE execs miss TV, NXT preview, Something Else to Wrestle With topic, WWE dates set, WWE 2K cover star announced, big WWE 2K contest, Rey honored, AXS gets another wrestling show, MITB plans changed, MITB guests, Ellsworth note, WWE official comments on MITB reaction, another UK tournament match, New Day cameos on NJPW show, German WWE announcer hospitalized, WWE launching new show, Extreme Rules matches announced, title match on Raw, and Questions on HBK returning, Impact still running PPVs, Punk's future, SDL's status post-FOX, and WWE stars getting a raise

Paige was physically struck by an audience member when leaving Money in the Bank. As her car was leaving the arena, Paige, in the passenger seat, was waving goodbye to fans when a male audience member pie-faced her and commented on her weight. That's despicable. The disrespect shown to wrestlers and wrestling in 2018 is sickening.

Neither Triple H nor Stephanie McMahon are at WWE TV this week, as HHH is busy with the ongoing UK events and Stephanie is representing WWE in France. It's telling they're both already so important they can't be at every TV taping.

This week's NXT will feature War Raiders vs. The Mighty (formerly TM-61) as well as Bianca Belair vs. Dakota Kai. I look forward to both.

This week's "Something Else to Wrestle With" will cover the Hardys.

WWE's next Chicago event is Raw on October 8. I hope audience members will behave themselves better, but now WWE openly markets to people who disrupt the show to put themselves over.

AJ Styles is on the cover of WWE 2K19. I fully expected Ronda Rousey to get that honor, so as to market to a wider audience.

- WWE 2K has announced a $1 million fan contest for people to challenge Styles at the game. Styles is an avid gamer, so that won't be an easy feat.

Rey Mysterio has been honored by San Diego, with the city making June 19 Rey Mysterio Day. He's definitely done a lot to get the area code over!

AXS TV has picked up GLOW founder David McLane's Women of Wrestling series. AXS continues to build itself as a home for wrestling.

Money in the Bank was originally scheduled to end with Nia Jax vs. Ronda Rousey leading to Alexa Bliss cashing in her briefcase. Plans changed this weekend. I'm glad they're putting women in prominent positions, but I see why they didn't want to close the show with someone so new to wrestling.

Pat Patterson, Bruce Prichard, and John "Big" Gaburick were backstage at Money in the Bank. Those three names go way back in WWE.

James Ellsworth had been discussed for a WWE return since at least the Greatest Royal Rumble, including an idea to have him in that match. I think it made sense to use him when they did. I'm glad he's back.

WWE official Charles Robinson commented on the audience disrespecting Roman Reigns and Jinder Mahal. He needs to take that up with Triple H, since he's the one focusing on the hardcore fans.

Smackdown Live has a live event in Atlantic City, NJ on August 20 when Raw is in the Barclays Center. That's the first time WWE will be running the Mark Ettis Arena.

WWE:UK released Zack Gibson vs. Amir Jordan from their ongoing tournament.

New Day appeared on Being the Elite, Bullet Club's YouTube show. I'm glad they can be friends publicly despite being competing in different promotions.

German WWE announcer Cartsen Schaefer recently had a mild heart attack, causing him to be hospitalized. I hope he's back to 100% soon.

WWE has launched "NXT:UK," with eight initial tapings set. The series will feature a UK Women's Championship and UK Tag Team Championship in addition to the current UK Championship. There is no current announced broadcast partner. This is certainly a big undertaking for WWE as a whole. I hope it's not a money sink, but obviously the upcoming TV deals give them a lot of freedom to invest in something like this.

AJ Styles' Extreme Rules opponent will be determined in a gauntlet match tonight with The Miz, Daniel Bryan, Rusev, Samoa Joe, and Big E. I'm very excited to see a fresh name in the title picture.

Set for Extreme Rules:
- Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax for the Raw Women's Championship
- A multi-man match featuring Roman Reigns, Bobby Lashley, and wrestlers to be named with the winner becoming the next challenger for Brock Lesnar.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins for the Intercontinental Championship is official for Raw. I'm curious what's next for both men.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Let's start with a special attraction match at Australia's October show. Daniel Bryan would make sense if WWE thinks that will move tickets there (and, of course, Bryan signs a new deal). He should be saved for very special occasions when there's not going to be the expectation of him being in his prime anymore.

2. Presumably someone does, unless they like throwing money away. It definitely makes more sense to put events on Twitch or the GWN in 2018, but perhaps other countries still have a market for the events.

3. If he's financially secure enough to do whatever he wants, he can keep on doing something he's obviously passionate about, albeit at a lower level than UFC. If he needs the money, there are definitely places that would love to use him.

4. I think the two factors will more or less even out. SDL will definitely become more prominent, though.

5. It basically comes down to how much the talents can negotiate for themselves, which is going to be difficult without a union. I wouldn't expect Management to just generously raise contracts by a large amount out of kindness.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 6/18/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

New Impact podcast, MYC worker back in action, Taker appearance, assorted WWE press, Aro Lucha show notes, backstage MITB names, and Questions on Shinsuke's low blows, Boogeyman's worms, death matches, Corbin's direction, and the post-Mania lull

Impact Wrestling announced a new podcast focusing on reviewing their past content. I'm a little surprised they're not starting with the first weekly PPV. It's an interesting idea to focus on a lot of people who no longer work there, a lot of whom work elsewhere, but it makes sense in some ways to highlight the days when they were a much bigger deal.

Jazzy Gabert is now taking bookings again after being cleared by her doctor. I wonder if we'll see her in the Mae Young Classic and then NXT given WWE's previous interest in her. If not, Impact and ROH should definitely try to pick her up.

The Undertaker appeared onstage at a Post Malone concert in Texas. I never expected I'd be writing that! I'm glad he can enjoy life outside of his character now.

Bas Rutten discussed Nia Jax vs. Ronda Rousey. That was a smart move.

Titus O'Neil talked on Father's Day. I hope he slides again in Australia.

Triple H promoted NXT's Twitter performance. I'm glad the show succeeded to such a degree.

WWE showcased superstar dads for Father's Day.

At AroLucha's June 17 event:
- The former El Torito teamed with Thunder Rosa to defeat Demus and Kylie Rae.
- Jack Evans worked as Jack Edwards for trademark purposes. He won a four-way with ACH, Puma King, and Darby Allen.
- Rey Mysterio, Fenix, and Sammy Guevara defeated Shane Strickland, Willie Mack, and Black Taurus in the main event.
-A number of talents had a meet-and-greet before the show.
- Local Latin radio stations covered the show.
- Konnan, the Harris Twins, and Rafael Morti were producers backstage.
-- So that promotion is still going and trying to get business partners on-board.

SAnitY and the former Aiden O'Shea/Ryan Braddock/Jay Bradley were backstage at Money in the Bank. Bradley is local to Chicago, so I wouldn't read too much into him being there.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Basically it's his gimmick now. He couldn't beat AJ without an edge, and then he couldn't even beat him with a low blow... or with anything for that matter. It's done him no favors as a top guy.

2. Unless he hid them in his mouth for a long time, he did eat/swallow them. It was pretty disgusting.

3. Why do high-flyers do what they do? It's the style that gets them over/booked. If you can't be the most technical worker or the quickest one, sometimes you have to try to be the most hardcore.

4. Eh. I don't know if anyone would really care enough about him losing his hair. They clearly don't really have any ideas for pushing him, so he's just Stephanie's stand-in for the time being.

5. Basically Mania is the biggest show of the year and after that, the urgency's gone, so they take something of a breather before building things back up.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Money in the Bank Reax

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw and Smackdown brand WWE Network special event.

Sunday, June 17, 2018

Major WWE show in Australia, NXT and MITB hype, Ambrose update, injured star at Raw, Stephanie episode available online, former NXT star to Japan, Duke wrestler trying out for WWE, HHH conference call, and Questions on South Park's wrestling episode, ROH's future with FOX getting SDL, and the state of Impact

WWE announced a major live WWE Network special from Australia, in the more than 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground. That venue is paying to bring them in as a special attraction.

- Announced for the show are Triple H vs. The Undertaker "for the last time ever," as well as Shawn Michaels, Ronda Rousey, John Cena, Shane McMahon, Randy Orton, Big Show, and Daniel Bryan. Brock Lesnar is not advertised. So, this show could see Shawn Michaels have a final match, and indicates WWE expects Daniel Bryan to remain with the company after his current deal ends on September 1, while they aren't sure Brock Lesnar will be staying past Summerslam. Very, very newsworthy show.

- WWE put out an official press release for the event. This should absolutely be a major priority given the potential to set an attendance record for the company in the country. It will be a tall order, but we'll see if they can do it.

The Undisputed Era attacked Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch at an NXT live event before Takeover. UE has really been great.

Dean Ambrose was recently at the WWE Performance Center to rehabilitate his torn triceps. So, he's begun that stage of the recovery process. It's notable he's not advertised for the Australian event in early October. It could still be some time before we see him back in the ring.

NXT released a Ricochet documentary. It's been a long road for him to get to WWE. I'm glad he's succeeding there.

Alicia Fox is set for Raw, but she might not return on-screen. They could sacrifice her to Ronda or Nia if they wanted to.

Stephanie McMahon's "Undercover Boss" episode is now available on-demand.

The former Abbey Laith is going to debut in STARDOM soon. I hope that's a good move for her. I'm surprised she didn't make it further in WWE.

A Duke wrestler was profiled before trying out for WWE. I hope he does well.

Ember Moon promoted MITB. She's someone who can break out if they get behind her.

Triple H did a conference call after Takeover:Chicago, covered here:
- That needs to be the final bout between Ciampa and Gargano unless they're doing Hell in a Cell or something (which would be three months before WarGames). They're absolutely amazing together, but they've seemingly reached a plateau.

- NXT has definitely had some solid workers come up through the WWEPC.

- I hope we see another Shayna/Nikki bout before she moves up.

- WOW. Bigger than Jay-Z and Beyoncé??????

- I guess the UK brand is kind of like 205 Live, each of which are different from NXT.

- People obsess too much over how people are booked post-NXT. NXT is the pet project to have good matches before people go work for Vince, who's going to do things differently.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. They used the low-hanging fruit of wrestling fans being inbred rednecks and everything being Jerry Springer-esque. Very low effort.

Nothing to add to 2.

3. FOX's deal is only for the United States, so Canadian outlets will be unaffected. Additionally, ROH will continue to air on Sinclair-owned stations.

4. As was said, things are improving after most of the big expensive contracts have been dropped and they're working with other promotions to tape content/get their people work. Anthem is committed to continuing to give Callis and D'Amore the opportunity to get things going again.

5. I haven't been to nearly enough venues to have a good opinion here.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Money in the Bank preview

Read on for how I'd book tonight's Raw and Smackdown Live brand WWE Network special event.

Main Event Reax - 6/15/18, Arquette back in the ring, Mauro calling WWE:UK action, Interviews with Bret/205 Live talent/Sheamus/Xavier, Mid-Atlantic added to Network, WWE:UK matches released, Bruiser documentary streaming Monday, WWE Now panel set, Impact audience, NJPWxCEO matches set, Raw live event notes, and Questions on Rick Steiner, Molly in the HoF, #MeToo in WWE, catch style, and WWE signing the Beautiful People

-- Main Event:
- Titus/Apollo vs. Ascension:
It's nice to see The Ascension in action.

This isn't bad!

I like the team psychology here.

Solid ending stretch.

- Mojo vs. Gable:
I like this early.

Gable is very underutilized.

Fun in its own way, as Gable showed what he's capable of.

David Arquette returned to the ring at a CWFH event. His comeback is the subject of an upcoming documentary.

Mauro Ranallo will call WWE:UK's upcoming events. I'm curious who will be the regular team if/when it becomes a regular series.

Bret Hart talked about the WWE Hall of Fame:
- I hate when Bret puts himself over. He could have easily put over the athleticism and then said he wishes they'd do more psychology, then say he thinks he did a good job with Bulldog, but, damn.

- Bret knows exactly why WWE won't acknowledge Owen. Demolition isn't there because of the CTE lawsuit and the other two aren't there because of WWE not wanting to draw attention to their out-of-the-ring issues. If Davey Boy Jr. goes back to WWE, they might change their minds on his dad.

- Funny how WWF kicked into a higher gear post-Bret while WCW floundered with him. The wrestling world cared more about gimmicks and storylines than Bret's technical matches at that point.

Mid-Atlantic TV episodes from 1983-1985 are being uploaded to WWE Network as WWE explores that archive.

205 Live "enhancement talent" Steve Irby was profiled.

Sheamus promoted Smackdown Live's pre-MITB live event. I hope he gets back to main event level again at some point.

WWE:UK released:
Joseph Conners vs. Ashton Smith
Dave Mastiff vs. Kenny Williams
El Ligero vs. Travis Banks

Xavier Woods discussed Kenny Omega and more.

- Woods also celebrated three years of UpUpDownDown.

A Bruiser Brody documentary is being released free by Highspots to celebrate Brody's birthday.

Renee Young and Mike Rome will host WWE Now's preview of Money in the Bank, featuring Daniel Bryan and Becky Lynch. No Cathy Kelley???

Impact Wrestling drew 276,000 viewers Thursday.

NJPW's June 29 event with CEO gaming will feature:
- The Golden Lovers vs. LIJ's Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takhashi
- Roppongi 3K vs. Ryuskue Taguchi and Dragon Lee
- Guerillas of Destiny vs. David Finlay and Juice Robinson
- Jushin "Thunder" Liger vs. Rocky Romero
- Jeff Cobb vs. Chase Owens
- two dark matches to be announced

Goldust is back working Raw live events. He teamed with Zack Ryder and Chad Gable to defeat Mojo Rawley, Mike Kanellis, and Curt Hawkins. This came out of a singles match Mojo was having with Ryder that led to the heel run-ins and the babyfaces making the save.

For my take on Friday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. He was actually on a local school board at some point, as funny as that sounds.

2. It's pretty much a matter of when. We could easily see it happen when WWE does WrestleMania in Minneapolis, since Molly is a trainer there. WWE deliberately limits the numbers of female inductees so as to save some for future years.

3. Ummm….. that's not really the same thing. That's a more or less expected part of the performance rather than an act of unwanted sexual contact.

4. Basically the style is similar to amateur wrestling in the sense you try to get advantage by holds where possible and so on.

5. Apparently Velvet is retired from the in-ring aspect of wrestling. As was said, if WWE wanted either of them, they would have pursued them before now as both have been contractually free for quite some time. My guess is neither of them really fit in with the women's evolution and WWE would rather focus on younger names.

More wrestling coming up.

Eli Drake has signed a contract extension with Impact Wrestling that will take him through Slammiversary and the following TV tapings. We'll see if he sticks around after those shows.

Impact will use Alicia Atout as their backstage interviewer in Canada, while McKenzie Mitchell will remain their interviewer in the United States. That's a good call for transportation costs.

Don Callis discussed NJPW and more on Jim Ross' latest podcast.

Impact promoted an Australian tour featuring some of its stars. It doesn't appear the tour is officially co-branded with Impact, and the names in question aren't under exclusive Impact contracts.

Impact and RISE are co-promoting a show on July 7, where the Knockouts Championship will be on the line. That's good to get their Knockouts some work and potentially scout future Knockouts.

Kenny Omega is featured on WWE Network's Hidden Gems collection for a 2006 match from former WWE developmental territory Deep South Wrestling. Also on the collection are Xavier Woods from FCW as well as father-son tag team matches with the Ortons, Hennigs, and Armstrongs. It's smart to capitalize on one of the hottest stars in the business, although naturally that will probably lead to WWE fans discovering NJPW.

Lana spoke with Women's Health and Miami Living. I wouldn't be shocked to see her win MITB given the press she gets.

WWE:UK's Jordan Devlin promoted the upcoming tournament events. It will be interesting to see how those go, and whether Dunne will finally lose his championship.

Wildkat Wrestling uploaded a Drew Gulak match to sell an upcoming iPPV. That's a clever move given Guilak's recent WWE:UK tournament match.

A WWE spoiler: James Ellsworth has been pulled from a scheduled Chinese booking in order to return at Money in the Bank. I fully expect him to return to Carmella's side. I'm all for it.

NJPW Dominion was an official sellout at past 11,800 fans. The event will air as two two-hour specials on AXS, on June 29 and July 6. The product is really hot right now.

Kenny Omega is the first Canadian to hold the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, in another sign of NJPW focusing its attention globally. His match with Kazuchika Okada was the longest NJPW match since 1987.

Chris Jericho isn't expected to work NJPW's July 7 event, as doing a U.S. show for a company that isn't WWE could lead to heat with Vince McMahon. That's a surprising note with him winning their Intercontinental Championship. I would have thought that move was to drive ticket sales for that event.

Money in the Bank is a legitimate sellout. Presumably having both top brands on the card has been beneficial for them.

A new pro wrestling streaming service is launching. The Powerslam Channel has deals with more than 100 companies in 15 countries, and is starting out with charging $5.99 a month. They're launching with 2,000 hours of archived content and plan on airing 40-50 events each month. They currently have deals with CZW, Highspots.com, RF Video.com, WSU, Wrestlecade, Wrestlepro, ICW, PCW, RevPro, Over The Top Wrestling, Smash Wrestling, MCW of Australia, and many more. That can definitely a big service; they've put a lot of work into setting the groundwork.

CMLL trainer and wrestler Arkangel de la Muerte passed away at 51. He had worked out of Arena Mexico.

CMLL's Zeuxis is expected to work the Mae Young Classic, and could end up signed outright. We'll see how she does.

Killer Kross is expected to be a focal point in AAA. With him just debuting in Impact, he could be someone really on the map soon.

AAA is looking to run a show in Los Angeles at the 17,500-seat Forum. That would be massive.

Jushin "Thunder" Liger had an impromptu match with a baseball mascot in Japan after hitting him with a pitch. The other team's mascot was the referee. That's amazing.

Io Shirai will work her final STARDOM match this weekend before heading to the Mae Young Classic.

A lucha libre video game is in the works by Masked Republic. That could really be something.

El Santo will soon be the subject of a Mexican TV series.

David Arquette is expected to compete at Juggalo Championship wrestling next month, facing Human Tornado.

Chelsea Green is filming a movie.

Impact is looking to run a bigger variety of markets for TV in order to keep the product fresh. They're slowly building things back up.

Impact is interested in Mexico's Arkangel Divino. With the new TV deal there, that could be a good move.

Brock Lesnar is being figured into plans for UFC. He can appear on a show, but not compete, while under WWE contract.

Ronda Rousey's WWE contract is believed to be for multiple years, but it's possible there's an opt-out clause after the first year given Ric Flair's recent comment.

The Authors of Pain have been off TV due to visa issues that have now been cleared up. With Raw focusing on the team of Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler, they wanted to save the Authors for when they could they could get fully behind them.

Hideo Itami is set for Smackdown Live's Japanese tour, going against The Miz on June 29 and Big Cass on June 30. I'm curious what his future holds.

The Rock has signed on for a movie that will begin shooting in April 2019, effectively ruling out him working WrestleMania. That's not a big surprise given how many bookings he's getting.

Former NXT star Zeda is now working for MLW, which means she either doesn't have a no-compete clause or it doesn't extend to that group.

NXT has released Uriel Ealy. Gabriel Ealy has been out of action due to injury, so he remains under contract. You'd think they'd wait to cut them both at the same time. Either way, it will be interesting to see what's next for them.

Mark Andrews didn't work NXT's Download Festival shows due to an elbow injury. I hope he's able to return for the next steps of the UK brand.

Mauro Ranallo will miss Takeover:Chicago due to a boxing event. Vic Joseph will be replacing him. That's a big opportunity for both men.

Roman Reigns talked to ESPN. Him teaming with The Usos is an interesting idea.

WWE released footage of Flash Morgan Webster vs. Jake Drake from the UK tournament.

WWE profiled Ruby Riott's pre-WWE work. It's still kind of weird seeing them acknowledge pre-WWE names, since they rebrand so many talents.

John Cena wished the Arabic WWE Universe Eid Mubarak. That's a cool acknowledgement of the culture.

More wrestling tomorrow.
