NXT thoughts- 5/31/11

NXT: Redemption is finally moving along as tonight someone gets eliminated. Who's sticking around in the competition and who's going back to FCW? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Jericho discusses a potential return, Australian ratings, a Savage baseball piece, confusion about Raw taping, Questions on Flair, Orton as "Super Cena", WWE buying TNA and comparisons to the Invasion, wrestlers using cups, and Sheamus, Hogan and Mickie James interviews, Sean Waltman blogs, Miz interview, UK ratings, surprising name not at Impact Wrestling tapings, TNA ejects reporter, Raw dark match, Raw technical difficulties update, news on Kharma and JR, and more on Cena vs. R-Truth

Chris Jericho talked to The Sun about wrestling and other topics. He's a smart man. I think his DWTS appearance did help the mainstream's perception of WWE to a degree. Hopefully more people figure out that it's not a bunch of oily guys on steroids doing obviously fake fighting.

WWE Raw was the only wrestling show in the Top 100 in Australia this past week, drawing 27,000 viewers. Keep in mind that Impact Wrestling isn't on the air there.

This piece goes into memories of Randy Savage from his minor league baseball colleagues.

Triple H was locally advertised for the 5/31 Raw taping, but didn't appear. It's not known who made the mix-up, but I haven't seen WWE advertise him for any taping on their website.

PWInsider.com has new questions. Here's my take on them:
1. I suppose it could, but it would take commitment from Flair. I really hope he gets his act together. I agree that it's a pretty sad situation.

More answers and news after the break, starting with another complaint about Randy Orton.

Raw thoughts- 5/30/11

WWE continues on the road to Capitol Punishment tonight. Who will compete for the WWE Title then? Also tonight, we get the fallout from The Miz firing Alex Riley and Big Show getting hit by a car; and we finally hear from Kharma! All this and more on Raw. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Tough Enough thoughts- 5/30/11

Tonight, The Miz stops by as WWE judges its final 3 Tough Enough contestants. Who will go home, and who will remain for next week's finale? Andy, Luke, and Jeremiah battle it out tonight. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Impact Wrestling rating, weekend house show notes, Savage's brother recap, Lesnar undergoes surgery, Questions on Christian, PPV buyrates, HHH's future, "revealing" things, and covering MMA, Warrior talks Hogan, WWE scouting in Mexico, wrestlers open YouTube accounts, Stratus raising money, new Impact Wrestling video, top lucha name signs with WWE, and Bob Orton talks Savage

Impact Wrestling did a 1.19 on Thursday night. Not too bad.

Percy Watson worked this weekend's Raw house show. AJ and Jinder Mahal worked the Smackdown show in what I believe was Mahal's first match in WWE (he's been in FCW). I look forward to seeing how the 3 of them "cut it" in the company.

Here's a recap of Lanny Poffo's appearance on Hillbilly Jim's radio show, where he speaks about his brother Randy Savage's funeral.

Brock Lesnar had surgery on Friday which removed 12 inches of his colon. He isn't expected back in the UFC until January 2012. Ouch. Hopefully this is the last time he has to go through something like this.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up. Here's my take on them:
1. I really don't know how much more there is to say on this subject. It indeed would have been nice if Christian held the World Title longer. I actually think it helped him to finally grab the brass ring, as long as he's played up as a former World Champion and consistently treated as someone near/at main event status. I would guess that he could have a chance as champion again, but it could just be in a transitional role. If injuries and retirements and the like keep up, his chances could go up.

Why isn't Lacey Von Erich in TNA?, Talk of Summerslam's main event, Savage's brother to talk, Stone Cold on Fallon recap, Questions on Johnny Curtis, Bound For Glory, and Taker's next Mania opponent, video of Austin on Fallon, Jericho at music awards show, McMahon talks Savage, Flair coverage, and a rumorbuster

A reader wants to know why Lacey Von Erich isn't in TNA anymore. She wanted to do something else with her career. She has her own advertising company now apparently.

According to PWInsider.com, there's talk for the following match to headline WWE Summerslam:
John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship. I wonder what that means for the storyline with Big Show and Kane?

Lanny Poffo was on Hillbilly Jim's Sirius/XM radio show today to discuss his late brother. The show will be replayed 5/29 from 2-6 p.m. EST.

On to my take on PWInsider.com's questions for the day:
1. What they said. Same goes for anyone from past seasons of NXT, FCW, and the current roster. Curtis is still working in FCW, so at least he's getting experience.

2. I've seen some rumors, but there are always plenty of those for everything and a lot of them don't end up coming true, so I try not to jump the gun on them. They're discussing it being outside of Orlando is all I know.

Nothing to add to #3, because I don't know either! After the break, I look at the rest of their questions and the rest of the day's news. Starting off with pitches for Taker's next Mania opponent.

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Foley interviews, Waltman talks Chyna, Austin on Fallon, Questions on a Bryan heel turn, entrance music, the XFL's camera, and who does the site, Jimmy Hart interview, TNA has UK party, Hogan video game, more on WWE's audit, Flair's manager comments on court order, WWE-Price is Right connection, new talent to debut in FCW, and the UWF website

Mick Foley was on filmmaker Kevin Smith's "Plus One" podcast recently. He was also interviewed by Alex Marvez, who clearly isn't a fan of TNA. Glad Foley's charity work has gone so well.

Sean Waltman commented on Chyna's decision to make another adult film. I'm split as to whether to cover things like this.

Stone Cold Steve Austin was on Jimmy Fallon Friday night/Saturday morning.

Here's my take to today's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Don't give up on Bryan as a face just yet. It's going to take a while for things to settle in after the draft. At least they're putting him on the show regularly. As for a heel turn, I think a more intense Bryan would be pretty entertaining, but I don't think it's time to go that route just yet.

I don't have anything to add to #2, but to add to what they said for 3. For music that isn't done by an outside band and used, Jim Johnston's the go-to composer in WWE, and Dale Oliver does a lot of it in TNA. Dixie Carter's husband sings Beer Money's entrance music, interestingly enough, and of course John Cena and Mickie James sing their own themes. As for things link Alberto's car and Triple H's spray, I imagine Creative comes up with some of that.

4. I don't think you can copyright or trademark things like that, but I could be wrong.

5. I do all of it myself, which is why it takes so long sometimes (Sorry!). It's a hobby.

All of the rest of today's news is after the break!

Smackdown thoughts- 5/27/11

Over The Limit is over and Randy Orton is still the World Heavyweight Champion. Who's going to step up to challenge him at Capitol Punishment? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

TNA's ring announcer, Was Rosita ever in WWE?, Chyna update, more on Savage, more talk on Impact's name change, Questions on a Charlotte WrestleMania, how to top 1,000,000 buys for WM28, WWE commentators, and Christian losing the title, old Savage interviews, Lance Hoyt (Vance Archer) interview,TNA's future on the road, Mickie James update. WWE cancels another event, Angle Olympics update, Hernandez interview, FCW profiled, Bischoff talks, Hogan profiled, catching up with Stacy Keibler, Savage obituary, Cena and Miz interviews, Robocop returns to wrestling, order out for Flair's arrest, and the updated line-up for TNA Slammiversary

Someone asked if TNA's Rosita was ever in WWE. Not that I'm aware of.

A couple of other people want to know who the ring announcer is on Impact Wrestling. It's former WWE Diva Search winner and Playboy model Christy Hemme. Jeremy Borash does the main events.

Chyna's run with TNA is believed to be over, but this isn't 100% confirmed. What is confirmed however, is that she'll be returning to the adult film business.

A handgun was found in Randy Savage's car during his accident, but was believed to be for target practice and was properly registered. His funeral went as per his wishes.

Slam! has a piece on the change to "Impact Wrestling" featuring comments from TNA performers and executives. They should indeed go with what draws ratings, but everyone involved also needs to think long-term. Guys like Flair, Hogan, and Sting might draw numbers now, but they can't be in every segment and won't be around forever. They need to utilize the people who do draw ratings with people who have the potential to draw ratings if used properly. It's not easy, and it can't be done overnight, but it's necessary for a company to succeed long-term. Take Alberto Del Rio for example. Here's someone who was virtually unknown to the WWE audience before his debut, but they treated him as a big deal and used him with established draws like Edge and Rey Mysterio. Granted, Del Rio's a great talent and could get over on his own to a degree, but it certainly helped him to be paired with (and treated as close than/equal to) multiple-time former World Champions. The aforementioned Flair, Hogan, and Sting didn't just start drawing numbers overnight; promotions took chances with them. They tested the waters with them going up against established names, and had those established names help them get over. Will it work with every talent? No. Some talents can be pushed too soon or too much. They have to be able to get over on their own at some point, gaining the skills necessary to do so. But TNA could certainly help them out by going out of their comfort zone a bit and giving them the rub.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up.
1. This was asked before but they had a different answer to it. I didn't even think of it in that way last time. Yes, if Charlotte rolled out the red carpet for WWE, they'd probably consider holding WrestleMania in the arena where the Panthers lose play.

More answers and news after the break, starting with if WWE can top a million buys for WM28.

Superstars and Impact Wrestling thoughts- 5/26/11

Today, WWE.com has a new episode of Superstars featuring Tyson Kidd vs. Trent Barreta, then tonight on Impact Wrestling, AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels face off with Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer and Kurt Angle takes on Rob Van Dam. Read on for my thoughts on the shows as they happen!

Homicide interview, Flair legal update, Questions on the Hall of Fame, Cornette/Heyman, and WWE having a non-PG show, WWE cancels house show, WWE catches up with Vader, Morrison's mic improvement profiled, Foley interview, Shark Boy profiled, Nash interview, Foley profiled, WM27 buyrate update, Lesnar interview, result of WWE audit. Kharma update, and a Diva undergoing surgery

Homicide talks about UWF , TNA, LAX, and some other acronyms in a recent interview. Nice read.

Here's the official press release for the matches at UWF First Blood.

The court case between Ric Flair and Highspots.com was supposed to continue on 5/25, but will instead go back to court 5/26.

PWInsider.com got in some new questions:
1. Taker, then HHH, then Edge based on what I see as their contributions to the industry. A lot of it comes down to how many years each have had in the business.

2. I really doubt it. I know they've had some issues over the years for one, and I'm not so sure that the two of them by themselves could make a more successful promotion than what we have going on now. While plenty of old-school/online fans like their work, their promotions weren't all that successful financially.

Nothing to add to 3 and 4, but after the break I tackle whether it would be a good idea for WWE to have an edgier show for Smackdown and keep Raw PG. Plus the rest of the day's news!

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

What's next for A-Ri?, WWE's Savage video, WWE to open office in India, Lesnar's book released, Questions on WWE's international talent, Taker's last Mania, Hogan/Bischoff or Ross/Heyman for TNA?, and HHH as a full-timer, more changes for TNA, Australian fans get to catch up on Impact, another Savage piece, WWE has new online deal in the UK, ex-Creative member talks Savage, why Savage's autopsy was inconclusive, Steele talks Savage, "Sports entertainment summit" scheduled, WWE superstar and former Diva to divorce, more mainstream coverage of Savage, Raw and Tough Enough ratings, Sting going on tour with TNA, Foley knocks TNA, Knockout hosting series of DVDs , a look at Lesnar's WWE persona, future Hall of Famer confirmed?, matches made for UWF First Blood, WWE iTunes update, Macho marketing, and Jericho appears on DWTS finale

Someone asks what's next for Alex Riley. I don't know since I don't read spoilers, but since he's been "fired" from Raw, my guess is that they'll try him out as a face on Smackdown.

For anyone who didn't see the Randy Savage tribute video on Raw (or wants to see it again), WWE has posted it online.

WWE has announced that they will open an office in India on 6/1. Their ventures there could turn out very well for them.

Brock Lesnar's autobiography was released on 5/24.

Update: the first 50 pages are on the book's website. That's pretty gutsy.

PWInsider.com has some new questions:

1. It's a mixture of both. They've had other international talents in the past, but it definitely seems like there've been even more of them the past few years. As far as international training centers, WWE likes to send people out to evaluate the talent every so often, so it's much more cost effective to have the international talents come to FCW.

2. I'm trying to remember how many years I've read that Taker's career is winding down only for him to keep coming back. My ideal scenario for his final match would be something involving Kane and Paul Bearer, but that wouldn't be so great from a workrate standpoint. If he's going to retire 20-0 next year, a double retirement match with Triple H would be pretty awesome, though it wouldn't be as symbolic as one involving his "family". Maybe he guts it out and goes 21-0 so we can see him face both opponents? Or he can beat Triple H at Mania, then at another PPV (if he can't "hold out" until the next year's) they can do the Kane story. It'd be a fitting end to the character if he's "put to rest" or something by Kane and Bearer after his last match takes everything out of him. (No, I'm not saying he should "die" in a match, just that he's... sealed away or whatever mystical explanation they want to come up with).

More answers and news after the break, starting with whether TNA would be better off with Paul Heyman and Jim Ross compared to Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff.

NXT Thoughts- 5/24/11

Yep, it still airs. And this season's still going. Five FCW regulars continue on their quest to make it to the next season of the show, where they can choose any pro they'd like as they compete for a WWE contract. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Who runs TNA?, Savage to be cremated, Questions on Taz, Tough Enough, Survivor Series, Rock/Cena, and a new wrestling promotion, special plans for Destination X?, TNA cancels event, Hogan interview, Raw rating in Australia, DDP's Savage tribute, TNA shake-up, Warrior talks Savage, Raw Roulette to return, Austin on Fallon, Capitol Punishment poster, Sgt. Slaughter/Dusty Rhodes interview, Randy Savage 911 calls released, Savage baseball history profiled, Iron Sheik talks Savage, More feedback on Savage's career, Smackdown rating, and another Savage tribute

Let's start with a few questions submitted to the blog:

What was TNA's reaction to Christian losing again? I haven't heard anything either way about it, and I don't expect to. They'd probably like to have him return there, but I doubt we'll see that any time soon (if at all).

And Dixie Carter runs TNA. Other people might have some influence in what makes it onto TV and who gets hired and fired but she's the head honcho and can ultimately do whatever she pleases.
Edit: It should be noted that Panda Energy, as majority owners of TNA, can supersede any decisions made by the company, including changing the President.

TMZ has a report on what will now be done for Randy Savage. He was a very private person, so the small service shouldn't be surprising.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up:
1. Yes. Taz used to be one of my favorite commentators, but he's starting to bug me in his current run.

2. I also haven't heard anything concrete on a Season 2. If it does happen, it will be a while before it airs. They haven't even done casting yet! I hope it comes back at some point. Even if it's not on USA, surely NBC Universal would want it on another channel given the numbers it's pulling in.

3. I doubt it would happen. There's much less competition on Sundays for one.

Raw thoughts- 5/23/11

Last night at Over The Limit, John Cena retained the WWE Championship after a grueling "I Quit" match with The Miz and Alex Riley. What's next on the horizon for him and the rest of the Raw roster? We get part of the answer tonight on Raw. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Tough Enough thoughts- 5/23/11

The competition continues this week on Tough Enough and things go down to the wire. Who will get one step closer to a WWE contract? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Questions on wrestling with piercings, announcing wrestlers, Cena vs. Rock, WWE pushing Cruiserweights, and locations for Mania, and the Over The Limit dark match

PWInsider.com had new questions Sunday.

1. This is one of Jim Ross' pet peeves as well. There's one argument that in kayfabe, it would make sense if someone pulled on them to hurt their opponent. I can definitely see the point, and I seem to remember C.M. Punk getting a split lip from an accident with his lip ring. My guess is that the performers don't want to go through the trouble of taking them all out pre-match, then putting them back in afterward. Just a guess.

2. I would guess that they'll save it for the bigger matches.

3. In addition to what they said, it was a smart move to continue the momentum from WrestleMania. It'd be ridiculous to have Rock take Cena out, then wait 9 months before they announce the Mania match. This way we know it wasn't just a brief comeback, but that they're building to something big. Ratings were up the night after Mania, so a bigger audience heard of the upcoming match. I'm not sure exactly how this works, but WWE might be able to charge a lot more for tickets because more people will have waited longer to see the match, so there'd be more competition to be there. Anyway, the "Rock having second thoughts" part is also ridiculous. He's under agreement to the company to do the match. Imagine what that would look like on his resume if he was going to do it, but took a different offer for something else. Future directors would be wary of using him in movies, since he might just decide to go with another project after having second thoughts. Injuries are always possible, but I think Cena would gut through it and do the match unless he just absolutely HAD to take time off. Taker was in bad shape going into this year's Mania, but he still competed.

More answers and news after the break, including why WWE doesn't push cruiserweights.

WWE Over The Limit preview

Pretty interesting card for tonight's PPV. Read on for how I'd book each match.

Questions on Summerslam in LA and my first wrestling event, updates on Desmond Wolfe and Goldberg, ROH sold, interesting WWE survey, and hype for UWF First Blood

PWInsider.com had new questions Saturday:
1. They do pretty good business there and get a good deal of press. They're trying to build Summerslam's prestige with the Hollywood connection. It's way too soon to know what they'll do with Capitol Punishment in the years to come, or if it will even exist in the years to come. It would be somewhat odd if they used a PPV name for just one show, but they did it in the past with their British PPVs.

2. Kane vs. The Undertaker vs. Mankind vs. Stone Cold in a steel cage match. Mankind retained his WWF Championship.

I don't have anything to add to 3-5.

There have been different plans to bring Desmond Wolfe back to TNA over the past few months, but none of them came to fruition. He's been developing and writing a sitcom during his time off. I'm not crazy about Wolfe, but wouldn't mind if he came back in a midcard/tag team role.

More news after the break, including a story about Goldberg.

More news on the passing of Randy Savage

Since a good chunk of this weekend's news (understandably) centered around Savage's death, I've decided to have this post for Saturday and Sunday's news of it. The other news will be in separate posts. I did this so those interested in one set of news but not the other wouldn't have to wade through the rest of it.

All of it is after the break.

Saturday, May 21, 2011

New FCW names, Christian interview, Regal talks about entertaining, Trish interview, WWE ranked on a list of global licensors, Questions on Christian as heel or face, the royal wedding, Championship Scrambles, and the reaction to Christian losing, TNA executive leaving, WWE changes PPV name again, and Impact Wrestling rating

FCW has added some new names and faces to its website:

Alexander Rusev, who is Bulgaria's Miroslav Makarov,

Ethan Levin, who I can't find any background on.

Audrey Marie, who I also can't find any background on,

and Eden Stiles who is the ring announcer on WWE Superstars (earlier identified under her real name of Brandi Reed).

Slam! has a nice interview with Christian. Heck of a guy.

William Regal had some interesting things to say about his being a wrestler vs. an entertainer. That link also has a link to a Trish Stratus interview where he discusses "Bail Enforcers".

WWE was just ranked #37 on the list of world licensors. They beat out Coca-Cola, Playboy, and the Trump Organization among others. That's very impressive.

After the break, I go into PWInsider.com's questions for Friday and the rest of the day's news.

Wrestling legend Randy Savage passes away at 58

Obviously this is the biggest story of the day so I'm making it a separate post. Randy Savage died on Friday in a car crash in Florida. His wife was also injured. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this unfortunate accident.

After the break, get all of today's press on the story:

Smackdown thoughts- 5/20/11

Jarrett interview, More push for First Blood, TNA vs. AAA matches, Questions on Alicia Fox's injury, Orton going AWOL, Cena going heel, and changing gimmicks, Foley interview, WWE ally leaves NBC Universal, Christian interview, MITB update, and more on Foley-RAINN

Slam! interviewed Jeff Jarrett on Chyna and Kurt Angle.

The Urban Wrestling Federation has taken out a number of full color ads in New York newspapers, including The New York Post and New York Daily News to promote their first PPV. They all also push the show with some hip hop stations in the area. Clubs aren't exempt, either, as cards like this one have popped up in the NYC area.

Mexico's AAA has announced matches including TNA stars for its TripleMania show. They're getting a good deal of buzz for this, and it's looking to be a big show.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up.
1. If you're referring to Alicia Fox as having "very little ring experience", she started in OVW in 2006. Though it should be noted that the WWE Divas aren't used to working the way they're working with a "monster" like Kharma. It'll be interesting to see how that injury affects everyone going forward. Even if it wasn't her fault, the label of "someone was injured working with her" could be hard to overcome. Just ask Mr. Anderson.

2. They pretty much summed it up. WWE is aware of it, and even used it in an angle years ago, but they're apparently willing to overlook it (and his other past behavioral issues) as long as he has his head on straight now and gets over as a top guy.

#3 went over my head. I'm guessing it's a reference to Chyna's drug use.

More answers and news after the break, starting with whether Cena will ever go heel.

Superstars and Impact Wrestling thoughts- 5/19/11

It's Thursday, so time for 3 hours of new wrestling. This week on Superstars, Evan Bourne takes on Drew McIntyre. Will either man move closer to the U.S. Title? Then, on the brand new Impact Wrestling, Mr. Anderson has something special in store for Sting. Also, see what changes Mick Foley and the network have in store for the show going forward. Read on for my thoughts on the shows as they happen!

Questions on Trent Barreta, Angle in the Olympics, Stephanie on TV, Austin returning to the ring, Edge's future, and Santino Marella, UWF press release, Trump-WWE mention, TNA using Impact Wrestling name more, TNA live chats with wrestlers, Miz MLB appearance, HHH and Nunzio updates, change to WWE contracts, more on Tough Enough-FCW, Shad Gaspard update, and inside WWE Creative

First up today, someone's curious as to the future of Trent Barreta in WWE. I haven't read anything either way on him. I know that he's working Smackdown house shows, and is listed on the FCW roster so he could be working there regularly as well. WWE is hard to predict with its talent cuts at times: they could be having him improve by continuing training now, but if push comes to shove and they feel the need for roster cuts, I wouldn't be really surprised if they cut him. I like him alright, but I think he still has a ways to go to move up the card. A nice worker with spunk, but missing the push creatively and (possibly) the "it factor".

PWInsider.com also has questions:
1. I know I give some "non-answers" a lot, and this isn't really different. "We'll see" is about the best conclusion I can give. Sorry. If he can pull it off, though, good for him.

2. Nope. Well, at least not full-time. The McMahons are much more off-camera these days, in addition to what they said. I definitely wouldn't rule out a future appearance, though. But I would have said the same thing with Linda and Shane before they left the company.

Jericho interview, Dinero update, more on TNA rebranding, TNA ref replaced, Questions on Graham-Abdullah, piped-in crowd noise, Tough Enough training, the Raw GM, and C.M. Punk, Wolfe update, Punk, Christian, and McCool interviews, new WWE talent update, new TNA Championship, WWE on MTV, WWE Films contest, Kelly Kelly-Maxim connection, Chyna and Chris Harris updates, Austin booked on another Raw, Waltman's new WWE role, update on Randy Savage, and ratings for Raw and Tough Enough

Chris Jericho was interviewed recently on a number of topics. I agree with him on how great the angle with Shawn Michaels was. He has Fozzy dates upcoming but likely won't do reality shows. A WWE return is still up in the air.

D'Angelo Dinero has made it clear that he is NOT leaving TNA. No word on what he was hinting at on Twitter, but that wasn't it.

Update: The Twitter date was a reference to his return to Twitter. His administrator had been tweeting for him for months while he finished a degree in criminal justice. He's looking into reality shows and movies in addition to his TNA commitments.

TNA had talked about the rebranding idea for almost a year before finally changing the name of Impact. Hulk Hogan was strongly in favor of it.

TNA referee Mike Posey has returned due to Brian Hebner still recovering from knee surgery.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up.
1. Graham has come across rather bitter these past few years, though a lot of that could be related to his deteriorating health.

After the break, more answers and news, starting with issues with crowd noise.

NXT Thoughts- 5/17/11

It's elimination week on NXT, so someone's headed back to Florida after tonight's show. Who's going to be on the chopping block after WWE tallies the votes from the pros and WWE Universe? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Questions on why Nexus was changed, Headlining Mania vs. being World Champion, Rock's birthday Raw, Rock as #1 Contender, and TNA-Chyna, more Impact Wrestling press, Tough Enough in Canada, TNA billboards near WWE HQ, new faces in WWE, Hogan interview, more WWE business talk, Smackdown rating in the US and Australia, pictures of the new Impact (Wrestling) Zone, WWE changes the name of a PPV, and guests on next week's Tough Enough

First things first, someone wants to know why WWE changed Nexus. Presumably they thought it had run its course and/or wanted to go in a different direction with it. The bottom line for WWE is always what they think is the best idea for business.

PWInsider.com also has some new questions up.

1. In addition to what they said, yes... main eventing WrestleMania is more important than being World Heavyweight Champion. Even if there's only 1 World Title match a month, that's 12 chances to be in the World Title picture. Co-headlining WrestleMania only comes around once a year. There have been more World Champions than Mania headliners, so it's a more elite club to be in.

2. WWE knows that having The Rock means ratings, and they wanted to make the most of his appearance. I personally enjoyed the show as a one-time break away from the typical Raw.

3. The match has already been made official as Rock vs. Cena. It doesn't matter if Cena's WWE Champion or not. It's a done deal. Why would they kick Rock out of a signed match just because Cena's champion? As for what they said, I too think that having the WWE Title on the line in a different match would be beneficial, but I can also see the argument that it would make Cena vs. Rock (and the WWE Title in general) even bigger.

More answers and news after the break, starting with why TNA brought in Chyna.

Raw thoughts- 5/16/11

It's 6 nights before WWE goes Over The Limit, and tonight's Raw is in San Antonio, Texas. Who will have momentum on their side going into the show, and who will have something to prove? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Tough Enough thoughts- 5/16/11

Business picks up on Tough Enough this week. Who's going home? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Indentity of Superstars' ring announcer, Questions on TNA changing the Impact Zone, heels getting heat in WWE, Daniel Bryan, Big Show's KO punch, Kharma, and the Fall of TNA, More Impact Wrestling hype, Dinero update, WWE on Food Network, Tough Enough-FCW updates, and an ex-NXT star works a Smackdown house show

Since people have been searching for it/asking about it, I haven't seen anything concrete about remodeling the Impact Zone. It would make sense to have a new look for the show for Impact Wrestling, but there's been no word on it. Personally, I think that if they're going to push the change a lot, they should go with the new logo on a blue and white ring apron, and blue ropes. Lighting would also need to be changed from the red/black to blue/white. Am I the only one who thinks the new logo and colors make the whole show seem more "subdued" or "tame" than the original?

Oh, and if anyone's wondering, the announcer for Superstars is FCW's Brandi Reed.

Not much in the way of news for Sunday. PWInsider.com has some questions as always:

1. I think to some extent the heat for Cole and Vickie comes from the fact that some people legitimately don't like the two of them (Cole for replacing JR and not being as good of an announcer, and Vickie for "only having a job because Eddie died" or "taking up time from non-wrestlers"). Kind of an "oh, great, here comes _____ again" reaction. Miz has it to a degree as well, since he "isn't ready" to be a main eventer. A number of heels are "cool heels" to a degree that a good number of fans appreciate so they don't get booed as much.

To me, an effective heel doesn't give the crowd what they want (see the "anti-hardcore" Mick Foley in the original ECW or Right To Censor for instance). They cross lines of taste (Jericho punching Michaels' wife, Punk interrupting the birthday party). And if they are "cool" to a degree, they shouldn't revel in it. I think of The Rock as Corporate Champion not wanting the fans to "sing along" with his catchphrases. They don't care about having a good match, or the fans seeing a good match, or honor or.. you get the idea.

2. I had a pretty similar experience for a while. I think you're better off not listening to "how great" so and so is that you haven't seen yet, and letting their actions do the talking when you actually do get to see them. I thought Bryan was insanely overrated, and "couldn't work the WWE style". But eventually he won me over to a degree. I like his work somewhat now. I don't want him to be a main eventer (or make one tap out, like he did to The Miz and Sheamus), but he's earned that U.S. Title spot to me. When you hear how great someone is so many times, it's almost impossible to live up to the hype at times. I'm at a similar place with Desmond Wolfe.

TNA Sacrifice preview

Tonight, TNA presents its latest PPV event, with a grand total of 9 matches on the card. Read on to see how I would book it.

New TNA names confirmed for AAA, Questions on Matt Hardy/the Internet, Taker vs. Austin or Rock at Mania, Nash as Odin, Goldberg returning, and Team 3D's students, Mexico a success for WWE, Morrison update, more "Death Clutch" excerpts, TNA promotes Impact Wrestling, Dinero update, and Karen not competing at Sacrifice?

Angelina Love has now been confirmed to work AAA's TripleMania, along with Mickie James and Velvet Sky.

PWInsider.com had new questions up Saturday. For #1, I see your point. He should have used carrier pigeons to spread his message. Seriously, what else would he use to get that word out? I don't really see the issue here, other than the irony. And as far him taking issue with the Internet for the story about Helms' DUI, like they said, TMZ used the official police report for the story. No need to shoot the messenger. If there's some factual error there, it's the fault of the police.

#2 is apparently psychic, because without reading that post beforehand, I mentioned that same scenario in a recent post. Hopefully they'll tell me some lottery numbers soon. Nothing to add to their answer that I didn't say in the other post.

Nothing to add to #3 either, other than I've never seen "DOA".

More answers and news after the break, starting with more talk of Goldberg.

Questions on the end of Nexus, Jericho changing his character, and Taker at Mania, Tough Enough to air in Canada, Lesnar book excerpts, Piper interview, WWE dirty deeds, B. Brian Blair update, JR talks about Lesnar's condition, why Steiner won't be at Sacrifice, Raw and Smackdown from Mexico this fall, Impact (Wrestling) rating, venue for UWF First Blood, and a rumor about D'Angelo Dinero

Friday's news starts with PWInsider.com's questions. For #1, I think WWE could have done more with the original Nexus, especially when they had Cena in the group. Once Cena took them out and outsmarted them, things went downhill for the group. As for the New Nexus and Corre, the former's pretty much run its course (maybe if they had a different name?) since they're not the same level as the original group. Orton did a good number on them. It's close to being time to split them up for good. As for The Corre, I think there's still some juice (apple, naturally) left in them. I'd be surprised if they made it through the summer though. Even reboots and lineup changes only do so much.

Nothing to add to #2 that hasn't already been said. We'll see if there's "something bigger" afoot in the weeks to come.

As for Jericho, characters do change and evolve over time as they said. The bottom line to me is whether or not the change is enjoyable. Besides his early character changes, he went from the Rated R Superstar persona to more of the Ultimate Opportunist role, then became a bit of the "old guard" in his feuds with Ziggler and Del Rio near the end. Rock has changed some of his catch phrases; Austin wasn't coming in stunning people and drinking beer promoting Tough Enough. He was more of the "old guard" trainer role against young upstart Miz. Granted, those things weren't as big of a change as Jericho's heel turn. They did have him in a rehash of his face character when he first came back, but it didn't get over nearly as well as heel Jericho. In the end, that's what's most important. What gets over long-term.

More answers and news after the break, starting with who I'd like to have seen Undertaker face in their primes.

Smackdown thoughts- 5/13/11

Last week, Randy Orton won his eighth World Championship at the expense of Christian. This week, we get all the fallout of this title change. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

News on Chyna and "Impact Wrestling", Questions on a new ECW-type brand, announcers knowing matches, and Cody Rhodes, Orton talks titles, Flair talks about the European incident, TNA's new mobile game, another Taz Dojo promo, TNA cancels live events, Lesnar hurt, Jericho talks comeback again, Capitol Punishment logo, TNA website re-designs, and new matches for Sacrifice

TMZ has a story on Chyna's involvement in TNA. I'm really curious as to where this goes. Hopefully she's at a good place in her life and can contribute to the company. But how long will they use her?

PWTorch reported that she was chosen for the role over Isis the Amazon. As of Thursday, I hadn't read a more credible source confirming that, so take it with some salt. They also report that Isis was received poorly backstage, which Tara denied on Twitter back when the story first came out. So, one side is either not aware of the whole story or covering up. I wouldn't normally report that since it's disputed, but it was part of the same story.

As noted on Thursday's show, "TNA Impact" will now be known as "Impact Wrestling". The company will keep the TNA name for now, but the name of the show has changed.

On to Thursday's PWInsider.com questions:
First off, I love the word "Juggalo" for some reason. Someone needs to do a Photoshop (or Paint.net or GIMP or whatever program they prefer) of Rob Schneider as "Deuce Bigelow: European Juggalo". Anyway, that's a pretty interesting comparison. When I first read this, I wasn't so sure, but after a look into it, it's doing pretty well for itself. As for making it to ECW's level, that remains to be seen. I'm impressed so far, though. If they can turn non-Juggalos into regular customers, then things could be looking really good for them.

After the break, will we see Sin Cara vs. Rey Mysterio at WM28? And the rest of Thursday's questions, news and notes.

Superstars and Impact thoughts- 5/12/11

Tonight on Superstars, Chris Masters takes on Drew McIntyre in a “they’re both on Raw now” match. Then, on Impact we find out who’s representing the Network, who Kurt Angle’s “mistress” is, and who Matt Hardy’s teaming with to challenge Beer Money. It’s an important day for wrestling shows; read on for my thoughts on the shows as they happen!

Thursday, May 12, 2011

WWE house show notes, Questions on WWE pushing new talent, Orton as champion, Hogan taking blame, the TV Title, and Rhodes' mask, Billy Gunn interview, upcoming WWE DVD, Jericho talks McMahon, and a possible TNA spoiler

Sin Cara will compete on the Raw brand house shows in Mexico this week in "Raw vs. Smackdown" matches with C.M. Punk.

PWInsider.com has some more questions today. For #1, I assumed he meant the new people WWE has been pushing the last couple of years: Del Rio, Sheamus, Barrett, Miz, Swagger, McIntyre, Kingston, Rhodes, Bryan, Brodus Clay, and the other Nexus/Corre guys. I'm sure I'm leaving some people out. Some are getting over, but not at the level of some of the people they don't have there anymore or work a limited schedule (Batista, HBK, HHH, Taker, Edge).

For #2, my guess is they weren't thinking of it like that. It seems more of a case of "we just lost an established top babyface, let's replace him with an established top babyface". It's a tough call to make sometimes with taking a risk on a new main eventer.

For #3, at first I was going to skip this one, but then I thought of his recent interview. He did sort of take the blame for TNA's move to Mondays, so there's that.

More answers and news after the break, starting with whether TNA should make the TV Title more relevant on PPVs.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Wrestling book updates, Questions on Hogan's finances, Christian's World Title reign, Batista coming back, and facing Kharma, lengthy Hogan interview, Hardy comments on Helms, TNA charity program, Raw and Tough Enough ratings, MVP interview, more on TNA and AAA, and Smackdown's dark match featuring an ex-WWE star

The autobiography of Chris Kanyon will be released 11/1. It was incomplete at the time of his death, but stories and memories from friends were added.

Brock Lesnar gives a promo for his book, to be released on 5/24. Hopefully the contents are more exciting than that promo. It was co-written by Paul Heyman, whose own book has been pushed back to a 10/25 release.

PWInsider.com has some new questions today. For #1, it's worse than that. He's working with TNA! But seriously, it is pretty sad that his finances are in such poor shape. The biggest star in the history of wrestling is broke? That's bad. He should be a multi-millionaire living in a comfortable retirement now.

To add to what they said on #2, shouldn't it be the paying fans who determine who deserves a top spot with the title? It'd be different if the fans were indifferent to him winning the title, but he got a pretty nice reaction out of it. It wasn't Orton-level, but given the difference in how the two of them have been pushed, that shouldn't be a surprise. They've got to be careful in what they do from here with Christian. Dropping him down the ladder just makes it that much harder to crack the glass ceiling.

After the break, the rest of the day's answers and news.

NXT thoughts- 5/10/11

FCW TV meets dark matches in one of WWE's internet-only shows (in the U.S. anyway). Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

New WWE Studios film to be made, Questions on the Draft and MVP, smoking in the UK, and "weak" finishers, Morrison injured, more on Helms and Sabin, Australian TV ratings, MVP interview, WWE movie changes name, news on Hall's health, new TNA Gut Check, Flair legal update, Smackdown rating, Austin to be on Raw , correction on Brett DiBiase, and an ex-WWE wrestler does Raw dark match

WWE Studios is getting geared up to film a new movie in June. It's a horror movie and sounds much more engaging than their last few releases.

Update: Variety has more on this and other upcoming WWE films.

Up next, PWInsider.com's questions. Nothing to add to #1, so we'll jump to #2. I agree about the Draft, but I can see their reasoning. I think the best time to do it (were it not for the situations with Edge and Undertaker) might be in the summer. After the Mania dust settles and they go through the rematches, shake things up then. Just an idea though. I wonder why they never went back to the "one Superstar switches brands for each show from Raw and Smackdown for 4-5 weeks in a row" idea they did once. I thought that was genius. I guess they're going for a big change really quickly.

As for the part with MVP, I'm fairly certain that he WANTED to leave WWE for Japan. If he was willing to return, I wouldn't be against them trying him out in the main event picture. I don't think they're "desperate for talent", since they are building up some new stars. More certainly wouldn't hurt if they were used right, though.

For #3, I'm surprised that there hasn't been anything about a fine for R-Truth or WWE. The entertainment rule makes sense; I've seen exceptions made for actors smoking in the past.

More answers and news after the break, starting with a discussion of "lame finishing moves".

Raw thoughts- 5/9/11

We're 13 nights from Over The Limit, and this week we have to get back to building up things for PPV and future shows. Who will make their mark on the road to next Sunday's event? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens!

Tough Enough thoughts- 5/9/11

And then there were 8. Things continue to heat up this week on Tough Enough as we get a double elimination. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it airs!

Questions on Rey vs. Del Rio, wrestling's Mount Rushmore, Sin Cara vs. Mistico, and Bischoff/Russo in TNA, Shane Helms photos, JR talks Legends of the Ring, Angle updates and official face turns

Not too much news for Mother's Day, so I'm jumping right into PWInsider.com's questions.

First, Del Rio was moved to the "A Show" and they wanted to keep Rey and Sin Cara separate, so they're on the same show again. Cara was moved so they can edit his matches while he gets out of his umm... growing pains in the WWE style. I guess Creative thought it was natural to start them off feuding again. They treat it like a lot of people don't watch both shows, so this is some introduction to who he is, via someone he's worked really well with in the past.

I did the "Mount Rushmore" thing at some point already. Odds are I've changed my mind, though. Off the top of my head, Sammartino, Hogan, Austin, and Lou Thesz. One top name each from 4 different eras.

After the break, the rest of the day's questions and news! Next up, should WWE have changed Mistico's costume and mask?

Sunday, May 8, 2011

AAA to use TNA stars, Dangerous Danny Davis interview, WWE auction for Japan, Questions on McCool's future, Kharma/Beth Phoenix, and John Cena, Update on Christian, Ryder spotlight, Jericho talks, Helms update, and Hogan jobbing

TNA will send some of its stars to Mexico's AAA as part of an angle leading to their big Triplemania show. The names tossed around are Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, Mickie James, and Velvet Sky.

Update: Jarrett and Steiner have been confirmed as the first two names going. They'll be wrestling at the 5/18 AAA tapings.

Famous heel referee Dangerous Danny Davis was interviewed recently.

G4 has a big auction of WWE items to benefit Japan.

Since today's a fairly short news day, I'm going to save all of the PWInsider.com questions for after the break.
First up, why did Michelle McCool leave and will she ever return?

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Questions on Kevin Nash and MITB, Miz and Maryse on TMZ, Austin talks with TV Guide, Helms injured, competition for Survivor Series, Kelly Kelly talks Maxim, Rima Fakih talks Tough Enough and more, Jeremiah does too, Jesse Neal talks Bin Laden, Jericho talks comeback, Impact rating, and a Skip Sheffield update

Friday's news starts off with the questions sent into PWInsider.com. There's nothing to add to 1 or 2, so I'll skp to 3. The last I read on him is that "(we) WILL see Diesel" at some point in that 5-year Legends deal, but that was months ago. He talked about a possible match at Mania, but they went with something else instead. It's just a matter of when they want to use him.

I'm kind of split on Money In The Bank being its own event. I like the idea of there being a briefcase for each show (so you can elevate two people at once), and it being treated that importantly to not get lost in the shuffle at Mania. That being said, it did add to the "bigness" of the biggest show of the year.

Nothing to add to 5 either, so I'll move on: The Miz and Maryse were featured on TMZ TV Thursday, as Miz responded to the comments made about which 3 wrestlers should go after Bin Laden. Funny stuff.

Stone Cold talked Tough Enough recently with TV Guide.

The rest of the day's news and my reaction to it is after the break.

Smackdown thoughts- 5/6/11

For those of you who haven't looked at the many spoilers posted all over the internet, it's a fresh episode of Smackdown! Read on for my thoughts on the first episode of Smackdown with the new World Heavyweight Champion Christian!

Will Goldberg be in TNA?, Kim engaged, DeMott working indy show, Cena talks, new names for UWF First Blood, Questions on the Cole Mine, title belts, Cole vs. Lawler, and Cody Rhodes, Cracked.com looks at wrestlers as actors, Tough Enough contestants do yoga with Trish, Luger talks about working with WWE and Sting's careerand Jericho as Thor

First things first, since people are searching for it: I haven't read the spoilers for next week's Impact, but I'd be very surprised if Goldberg is the big surprise for that show. I haven't seen anything about Goldberg in a long time, as a matter of fact. It's likely just something to mess with the fans, like the woman's feet coming out of the limo when Rock was guest host.

Gail Kim is engaged to celebrity chef Robert Irvine from the Food Network. They're scheduled to be married in May 2012.

Bill DeMott (among others) is scheduled for an indy show on 5/29. That's interesting. Not sure what that means (if anything) regarding a new Tough Enough. Season 1's done taping, and a theoretical season 2 hasn't been announced, much less cast, so I wouldn't read too much into this.

John Cena gave a pretty interesting interview recently on Edge's injury and his future.

PWInsider.com has confirmed even more names for the first UWF PPV taping.

Onto their questions of the day: To add to #1, I don't think the character just THINKS he's a huge egotistical idiot.

For #2, umm... no. Some people pay WAY more attention than I do if they're spotting (or think they're spotting) some of these things.

After the break I talk about "the point" of Cole vs. Lawler, look at their other questions, and look at the rest of the day's non-financial news (which is in a separate post).

WWE Q1 2011 financial results and conference call thoughts

I split this into its own post because there's a  lot of news on this end to cover. Read on for all of it and my take on it.

Superstars and Impact thoughts- 5/5/11

It's Cinco de Mayo, which may or may not have an effect on tonight's shows. On Superstars, Zack Ryder faces off with Evan Bourne. Then, on Impact, Hogan and Bischoff continue their investigation of the "network" while the Jarretts try to identify Kurt Angle's mistress. Read on for my thoughts on the shows as they happen!

More charity work from Foley, Questions on fan interactions, Melina vs. Alicia Fox, Vince on Christian, pushing commentators, and Orton's face turn, Fox injured, Edge to join cast of SyFy show, Will Stephanie return to TV?, Rock interview, WWE salutes heels, and HHH talks about his in-ring future,

Mick Foley continues to raise money for RAINN, despite passing his $100,000 goal. Currently he's auctioning off some pretty important memorabilia from his career: the Mr. Socko he used in his first WWF Championship win over The Rock, the original sleeveless shirt for Mankind, and even the bloodied, ragged shirt he wore in his match with Ric Flair last year. More details here. The article notes that said match with Flair could be his last match ever. He's certainly done a lot for charity in the past number of years. He's notoriously frugal, so he's not doing it for himself.

Here are my thoughts on today's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It depends on the wrestler and the situation. A wrestler at a planned autograph session would likely be happier than one who's coming off an airplane at 4 a.m. or something. Pretty much everyone has good and bad times to approach them. Of course, what they said about fans' behavior is a factor as well. If you go up to C.M. Punk and say "Hey Phil, what's up?", he probably won't react favorably (unless maybe you know him personally). I doubt that they don't appreciate their fans. If it wasn't for them, they wouldn't have a job!

2. Apparently they've had 3(?) televised matches in the past. People really ran with that comment and tracked down the matches they did have. I doubt any of them were 5-star classics or extremely memorable. Not that I dislike either of them; they just wouldn't come to mind on my list of favorite matches.

3. It's a mystery! Seriously, I've never heard any reason for it. McMahon and WWE fans don't always agree on who should be pushed.

More answers and news after the break, starting with why WWE is pushing commentators.

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Mainstream press for WWE, FCW release?, Questions on the X-Division, the Cole Mine, WWE using celebs, TNA's heels, and HHH/Taker, WWE seeking info on Gorgeous George, new UWF names include former X-Division Champion, Hogan legal note, Impact back on the air in Australia, HHH on the new WWE, Jesse Neal does national anthem, notes on the next Tough Enough, Big Show interview, Diva makes Maxim hot list, Raw and Tough Enough ratings, and an ex-WWE wrestler works a dark match

The sports cameos on Raw were covered by ESPN.

Brett DiBiase is believed to have been released from FCW. He's 23, so he has plenty of time to evolve in the wrestling business. He made one appearance on WWE, interfering on behalf of then-Legacy leader Randy Orton at Summerslam 2009. He had been doing FCW commentary while rehabbing a torn ACL.

PWInsider.com has some new questions up. For #1, I really doubt we'll see a big focus on the X-Division any time soon. I used to agree that it was good, but eventually a lot of the wrestlers and moves became interchangeable. Dives and flips and the like should add to a match, not be the match. It's like salt, a little bit on your food adds flavor, but too much is harmful and tastes horrible. I don't really care to see it return from a fan standpoint.

To comment on their answer, the soap opera stuff has always drawn. The Rock's "This is Your Life" segment with Mankind drew the biggest quarter-hour ever. The matches have to MEAN something to draw. The Attitude Era fans didn't tune in en masse to see the nWo or Austin or whomever do a bunch of fancy moves. The '80s fans didn't tune in to see Hogan do a flip dive on Roddy Piper. They tuned it to see what they'd do and who they'd do it to. It's pretty hard to twist numbers actually. If a Motor City Machine Guns bumpfest does a 1.09 and Immortal doing a big promo does a 1.16, it's pretty obvious which the fans want to see. Can you book talent to do better ratings wise? Yes. Is that done by throwing them out there and saying "do a bunch of stunts"? Generally not. And before someone brings up Benoit, Angle, Jericho, etc. drawing, they told a story in the ring beyond "check out what moves I can do" and that's why they were successful. They also generally had good mic skills. Saying that a company with much less exposure and experience than WWE would outdraw them by now if their style draws better is way too simplistic of an analogy. TNA's ratings aren't improving because they're inconsistent in their storytelling and aren't pushing the right people.

Now that that rant's over, I'll move on after the break with more answers and news.

NXT Thoughts- 5/3/11

Tonight we continue the (mis?)adventures of 6 WWE developmental talents trying to earn a shot at... earning a shot at becoming the next WWE breakout star on the next season of NXT. Also, William Regal steps into the ring to take on Jacob Novak. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens!

Extreme Rules injuries, Questions on heat for Sin Cara, Taker at WM27, Flair's current character, Cena/Rock, and Edge's retirement, McCool comments on Extreme Rules, Raw ratings in Australia, new UWF talents including ex-WWE star, WWE charity, news on Bill DeMott, Kharma changes Twitter name, Jesse Neal comments on Bin Laden's death, ex-TNA star to return to ROH, Christian gets praise, Stone Cold interview, Big Show on Burn Notice, Abyss update, Flair legal update, more Fozzy dates, younger Ziggler gets new FCW name, Smackdown rating, and Extreme Rules visitors

Brodus Clay's head was busted open after his spot in the ladder match at Extreme Rules. He needed staples to close the wound. Ouch.

Update: Jim Ross says that his (JR's) hand is broken as well.

PWInsider.com has some questions up as always, so here's a look at them:

1. If you mean heat by fans and IWC members, it generally boils down to the mishaps ("botches") he's had in his first couple of TV matches/entrances. I read something once about people in WWE being upset that he's being pushed so much, so soon (he didn't go through FCW) as well. I don't know if that's subsided now or not, since they didn't mention it in their answer. I think he'll be fine when he gets his "WWE legs" so to speak (like "sea legs" for people who don't spend much time on boats).

2. I haven't read anything to suggest a concussion or blacking out by Undertaker in that match. The stretched job and all that were planned.

3. It's just Flair being Flair in "crazy old man" form I guess? He doesn't have as many restrictions in TNA, so his promos are more out there than his WWE work.

After the break, how will WWE continue to build Cena vs. Rock for a year? More answers and news to come.

Raw thoughts- 5/2/11

Tonight, we celebrate the most electrifying birthday in WWE history as The Rock comes by. Who will be on the guest list? Also, we have the fallout to a pretty solid PPV, including new WWE Champion John Cena. What all wil go down this week on Raw? Read on for my thoughts on the show.

Tough Enough thoughts- 5/2/11

Another week, another set of tests to see who's Tough Enough to earn a WWE contract. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Questions on Flair's TNA run, TNA's "network", and WWE's branding, posters for upcoming PPVs, Best of Nitro trailer, UK ratings, Extreme Rules dark match, Monday's Tough Enough guest stars, McCool update, and Cena breaks important news

Sunday's news started off with the questions sent in to PWInsider.com. The first asks if Flair's TNA run has devalued him as a wrestling icon. I agree with their answer to this one in a sense. I think when you look at the whole scope of Flair's career, he's definitely still a legend and icon and all of that stuff. But, I also think that "in a perfect world", his in-ring career should have ended with the match with Shawn Michaels. I think there's some  truth in the adage about you only being as good as your last match or last major run, and Flair's just not the same guy he used to be out there. I think to a degree he still has something to give to the wrestling industry, but it shouldn't be as a wrestler as far as his legacy's concerned. The "footnotes" to his career feuding with Lethal and Foley I was mostly ok with from a story perspective, (though the hardcore match with Foley was kind of hard to watch), but by-and-large I haven't been thrilled with his TNA run. However, he needs the money and TNA's willing to pay him. Fans still tune in to see him, so it's going to continue.

Given that Foley's been used at house shows and will be at the next Impact tapings, it's certainly possible that he's the person behind the network. It's a guess, though, not a spoiler as far as I'm aware! That would be another older wrestler talking and not wrestling, though. I'd be ok with it (note that I pitched the idea of him being a part of the legal issue between Hulk and Dixie) as a short term "get things on track so we don't need all these old guys talking" idea.

#3 must be psychic, because WWE used the KFC metaphor themselves in the recent stockholders' meeting! Yes, it's a good metaphor. I actually like the grilled chicken somewhat, but that's neither here nor there.

They would know more about 4 and 5 than I would, so after the break I'll go to the rest of the day's news.

WWE Extreme Rules thoughts

Tonight WWE goes Extreme in a card filled with gimmick matches. We've got big clashes and title matches, and we're guaranteed a new World Champion. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it goes down.

WWE Extreme Rules preview

So, tonight we've got a show filled with Raw vs. Smackdown matches, gimmick matches, and a vacant World Championship. Read on for how I'd book WWE Extreme Rules!

New 2nd generation FCW signee, new UWF talents, Trish vs. Molly as a TE trainer, favorite arenas, memorable live match, and theme music, Stevie Richards interview, and more WWE stock news

Not much news from Saturday. I half considered holding out and combining this with tomorrow's post, but I like the "daily" news post idea, so I'll keep it as is.

WWE has signed Jesse White, son of former WCW Champion (Big Van) Vader. He has a background wrestling in Japan; he even teamed with his father there once. He had a tryout in Tampa before being signed.

A team known as the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz", EC Negro and KC Blade, have been booked for the debut PPV for the Urban Wrestling Federation and signed to contracts there. I think I'll keep doing news on the UWF until the June PPV, and then if they don't get a TV deal, I'll stop.

After the break, I look at PWInsider.com's questions for the day. First up, who would make a better Tough Enough trainer, Trish Stratus or Molly Holly?
