More GRR fallout, NXT woman introduces new move, WWE charity work, WWE Network 2.0 in the works, Vader health update, Roberts drops charges against Davey, Jr., NXT signs wrestler for a second time, and a Question on WWE in Saudi Arabia

Triple H and Kofi Kingston put over Saudi Arabia. Hopefully it was a positive experience for the fans and leads to greater acceptance of the West.

Kairi Sane debuted a new submission move. That could definitely add to her repertoire.

Stephanie McMahon did work for Connor's Cure.

Alexa Bliss and Natalya appeared at a Make-A-Wish Gala.

WWE Network is undergoing changes to be more personalized, using data from purchasing merchandise and tickets. George Barrios discussed this at a recent conference.

BBC covered Saudi Arabia cutting the GRR broadcast due to a commercial showing women.

Vader had another big doctor's appointment. I hope he's able to live as painlessly as possible for as long as possible.

Jake Roberts dropped charges against Davey Boy Smith, Jr. after the two sides spoke over the phone. Bret Hart got the two of them in touch. The initial WrestleCon centered around comments Roberts had made about Davey, Sr. Davey, Jr. approached Roberts at the show to talk about the comments. After Jake declined to discuss them, Davey, Jr. asked Roberts to step outside. Roberts didn't do so, and Smith threw a cup of coffee at him. Thankfully it's all settled now. I'd like to see the two of them work together so Jake can pass knowledge on to the emerging wrestler at some point.

NXT has re-signed Danny Burch. He finished his independent appearances Sunday. He was getting some pretty regular NXT bookings, so this isn't a compete surprise. I'm glad he's getting to work there again.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com question: Without going into the discussion about gun rights and the war in Iraq, as both are beyond the scope of a wrestling blog, I think Dave has a pretty insightful take here as far as having spoken to talents involved. I hope we do see positive change in the region as a result of WWE's business there.

Main Event Reax - 4/28/18, Network content notes, update on Finn's rainbow gear, Interview with Goldberg, Saudis apologize for indecent footage, and Questions on Jericho's WWE future, Ronda headlining WM35, KISS in CMLL, Nakamura's new nickname, and Paige's future with her movie pushed back

-- Main Event:
- Ryder vs. Kanellis:
It is nice to see some new people on this show.

Fine start.

Basic, but effective.

Good win for Long Island Iced Z. Maybe Hawkins needs to work with him to get off that losing streak?

- Revival vs. Heath/Rhyno:
Nice basic tag work.

I hope The Revival make it higher than Main Event.

It's weird to see Slater being the hot tag here.

That was a pretty nice ending sequence.

WWE Ride Along with Titus Worldwide and the pair of Braun Strowman and Alexa Bliss airs after Raw. Braun and Nicholas needs to be next.

Something Else to Wrestle With on Wednesday will focus on Shawn Michaels' 1995.

Finn Balor addressed the status of his rainbow gear. That gear is an important statement for many people.

Goldberg discussed his most recent WWE run and more.

The Saudi government apologized for "indecent" images shown of women shown during the Greatest Royal Rumble, likely ads featuring WWE female performers in ring gear. That might have actually only served to further showcase the culture's very different view of women, which could lead to further pressure to change it.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Fozzy is on tour from mid-July to mid-August, so it could be he doesn't want to come back for such a short period of time. I could see him doing something with Shinsuke Nakamura or Finn Balor at some point; it's all a matter of everything aligning for him schedule-wise and there being an opportunity for him to work with someone he's interested in working with.

2. I absolutely do. Ronda winning the Rumble to face Charlotte for the Smackdown women's title could work for that spot. Of course, it will also depend on what HHH, Angle, Cena, etc. are up to that night. The show should close with the biggest match, whatever that may be.

3. Things skirting copyright law also popped up on the indies when they could slide under the radar, notably with using music.

4. "Shinsuke" isn't a name that's easy for English speakers to pick up on, so Cole could have played it safe. We'll see if Nakamura becomes the next Rusev, Cesaro, Rusev, Big E, Big Cass, Harper, Rowan, etc.

5. She'll almost definitely still be Smackdown GM going forward, as she's still under a big talent contract. It's similar to Bryan's situation other than Paige presumably not fighting to get back in the ring against doctors' orders.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Interviews with Luger/Batista, Smackdown to Taiwan, Bryan and Ronda booked for live events, big live event switchup, podcast notes, official Nicholas merch, Camp WWE return date, new WWE title replicas, a LOT of GRR notes, new Backlash match, Impact audience, Paige movie pushed back, and Questions on the King of Dong Style, why big shows have long videos, Prichard as Paul Bearer, and winning the GRR

Lex Luger discussed Miss Elizabeth's passing on Sean Mooney's podcast. Here are highlights. It's a very sad read.

Smackdown will have a July 1 live event in Taiwan. That's pretty cool.

Daniel Bryan is now set for all Smackdown live events beginning Monday. He'll face The Miz. Good to see him back in action.

Samoa Joe has been shifted to Smackdown live events, where he's set for triple threat matches with AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship. WOW. That should be something.

- Roman Reigns vs. Jinder Mahal is now set to headline Raw live events. YIKES. That doesn't feel like a main event.

Ronda Rousey is advertised for a Raw live event on June 24 in the arena where she began her UFC career. Ronda is also advertised for Raw's Madison Square Garden event on July 7.

Batista credited John Cena with his jump to acting. I wonder if we'll ever see them in a movie together.

Edge and Christian have a big Q&A session on their latest podcast.

Chris Jericho has Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows, and Curt Hawkins on his latest podcast.

Braun Strowman and Nicholas have their own T-shirt now. I unironically thought that was awesome.

"Camp WWE"'s second season will begin on May 6, the same day as Backlash.

WWE is releasing "Elite Replica" versions of the WWE and Universal Championships, the closest replicas to their actual titles that have ever been released.

WWE responded to LGBT+ criticism of partnering with the Saudi Arabian government. I don't blame anyone for chastising WWE for the move. Hopefully WWE can be a force of change in the region.

The Saudi government held a dinner for Vince McMahon, Triple H, Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Shane McMahon, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, Rusev, Randy Orton, and The Great Khali. That's chilling in some ways.

Hornswoggle was scheduled to face a little person wrestler on GRR's Kickoff show, but plans were changed after his opponent was already flown in. Interesting.

- Hornswoggle commented on his appearance in the GRR.

After GRR, everyone went right back to the airport to travel to Quebec for Raw and Smackdown. I don't blame them a bit.

JBL defended WWE's decision to hold GRR in Saudi Arabia on Fox Business Network. We're now in full propaganda mode.

Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass is official for Backlash. I'm interested to see how Miz fits into that, and the show as a whole.

Impact Wrestling drew 308,000 viewers Thursday night. That's really disappointing following Redemption.

Titus O'Neil's GRR entrance has officially gone viral. I wouldn't be shocked if WWE turns that into his new gimmick, as it was a big hit backstage.

Austin Aries will challenge for the ROH Television Championship at War of the Worlds: Chicago. It would be surreal for him to simultaneously hold gold in ROH and Impact.

WWE's Paige movie has been pushed back to March 1 due to competing with other important movies in September.

Vince McMahon thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting the GRR. It was definitely a very big event.

GRR's live interviews were not broadcast for the crowd in the stadium. They were done during breaks in the show when fans were given a chance to pray.

Aiden English was unharmed at GRR, where some thought a Tombstone seriously hurt him.

Drew McIntyre was not at GRR due to visa issues. With him having just been brought to Raw, there wasn't time to work something out.

Sami Zayn was not at GRR due to his Syrian descent. Scary.

Ariya Daivari commented on sharing a WWE ring with his brother. I was wondering when that would end up happening.

GRR attendees were not allowed to have signs. Security confiscated those brought. Hopefully that changes in the years to come.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It's over as all get out, making him a lot of money and getting him a lot of bookings. If Mick Foley can take people out with a talking sock, Joey Ryan can have a supremely strong member.

2. It also gives staff time to adjust the ring, since there aren't commercial breaks on PPVs!

3. As fun as Prichard is, I think Pringle really made that role and association.

Nothing to add to 4.

5. Saudi Arabia's government, clearly, although at a pretty big expense.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Ryder update, LU name hurt at Impact taping, more on Bruno passing, GRR bigger than WM34?, more on Mathews' Impact role, AAA shakeup, Swann's future plans, more on ZSJ's status, hardcore legend missing CAC, Aro Lucha staff change, Jake Roberts sues over Wrestlecon incident, new CWFH TV deal, more All In names, Cody working hurt, more on Impact-UK TV, Brock-UFC update, Cena/Nikki note, deep discount for WWE Network, podcast guests, GRR hype, WOH set for ROH UK tour, new PWT store, PWT signings set, Alberto update, MLW announcer signs new deal, Impact departure, more WOTW matches, and Questions on GRR surprises, a female WWE should sign, Crockett Cups on WWE Network, and Zelina's pre-WWE work

Zack Ryder was diagnosed with strains in his muscles and ligaments. He will not need surgery. So, hopefully he won't need to miss much time.

Aerostar took a 450 splash hard during the April 25 Impact taping, leading to him being checked on by officials and walked out from the ring. He did not work the following night's taping as a result.

Bruno Smmartino's death was due to multiple organ failures as a result of heart issues.

The Greatest Royal Rumble is believed to have bigger pay for WWE stars than Wrestlemania. The Saudi government is definitely making the show a big event.

Josh Mathews has been dropped as Matt Sydal's manager so he can do commentary full-time. With Jeremy Borash leaving, plans necessarily changed.

Konnan has returned as AAA's booker, bringing new and returning names with him including Teddy Hart, Juventud Guerrera, and Kevin Kross. Rey Fenix and Pentagon, Jr. will also work shows. Vampiro is staying on as an agent. That could be big for the Mexican scene as a whole.

Rich Swann is looking to work Dragon Gate in Japan in addition to the U.S. indie scene.

Zack Sabre, Jr. has moved back to the UK. He'll be cutting back on U.S. appearances due to signing a full-time NJPW deal.

Terry Funk will miss the Cauliflower Alley Club gathering next week due to stomach pain resulting from a 2016 hernia surgery. I hope he's able to get past that pain at some point.

Vince Russo is no longer part of Aro Lucha. The promotion hasn't run a show since January, so there's no TV for him to write! We'll see if that's a permanent change, and what the future holds for them as a TV show and/or touring group.

Jake Roberts has pressed charges against Davey Boy Smith, Jr. for simple battery due to the coffee incident at Wrestlecon. How long before someone tries to book that match?

Championship Wrestling from Hollywood has gotten a TV deal with New England Sports Network. The show has coverage in smaller markets through CW Plus, as well.

Jay Lethal, Joey Janela, Chelsea Green (Laurel Van Ness), Britt Baker, and Penelope Ford are all set for All In. It's shaping up to be notable.

Cody has a pinched nerve and moderate arthritis in two vertebrae, but will continue wrestling. I hope that doesn't get worse for him.

Impact's UK TV deal is reportedly an extension of their previous deal.

Brock Lesnar is still expected to go to UFC once his WWE deal ends. He could end up fighting before the end of 2018.

John Cena and Nikki Bella taped a breakup angle for "Total Bellas" before their actual breakup, so  it's possible the show just uses what's already been taped.

WWE Network is pushing a three-month subscription for 33 cents a month. I don't even think Don West would offer it that low. There's a real problem with selling that service that needs to be addressed.

Brian Pillman, Jr. is on Stone Cold's latest podcast. Wow. That's surreal given the famous gun invasion angle between Austin and Brian, Sr.

Conrad Thompson is interviewed on Jim Ross' latest podcast.

Triple H put over Saudi Arabia before the Greatest Rumble.

Carmella heeled her detractors. Better late than never with this push.

Tenille Dashwood, Brandi Rhodes, and Kelly Klein have been confirmed for Honor United.

Lilian Garcia now has a Pro Wrestling Tees store. I swear, pretty much everyone has a store there now.

The Rock 'N' Roll Express (June 1) and Brother Love (June 17) will do signings at the Pro Wrestling Tees store in Chicago.

Alberto El Patron is booked for a May 11 independent date in Illinois, so he's still doing U.S. shows post-Impact.

Tony Schiavone has signed a multi-year deal to call MLW action. It's good to have a recognizable name attached there.

Braxton Sutter announced his departure from Impact Wrestling. He had asked for his release after
the last set of tapings, and they concluded his angles at the just-completed post-Redemption tapings. He got to be in a number of romance angles, but didn't make it as far as a wrestler.

ROH has announced:
- The Young Bucks vs. Hiromu Takahashi and BUSHI on May 9 in Massachusetts
- Jay White vs. Punishment Martinez for the IWGP U.S. Championship on May 11 in Ontario.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Batista, since he was spotted in Los Angeles promoting his latest Marvel movie. That would have been mind-blowing.

2. Mia Yim. I'm surprised she's still out there given her experience, abilities, and story of overcoming obstacles.

3. I wouldn't be surprised in the least. It's just a matter of it becoming the next highest priority of them.

Nothing to add to 4.

5. She also plays AJ Lee in the upcoming Paige movie.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 4/26/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Greatest Royal Rumble preview

Read on for my ideas booking today's WWE Network special event.

Since we just had a good number of title changes, this one's going to be pretty straightforward booking-wise.

- Bar vs. Bray/Matt:
It'd hardly be the Raw Tag Team Championship if it was on Smackdown! Woken Warriors win.

- B. Bros vs. Usos:
Harper and Rowan retain.

- Cedric vs. Kalisto:
Cedric keeps the title.

- Seth vs. Finn vs. Joe vs. Miz:
Seth remains champion. With Roman, Braun, Seth, Cena, Roode, and Lashley all as babyfaces, I think it's about time to turn Finn heel. Pretty much out of necessity. Should have moved him to Smackdown!

- Jeff vs. Jinder:
Jeff retains.

- Taker vs. Rusev:
As much as I'd rather have Rusev win, this is basically to give the crowd a big nostalgia moment. Taker wins. Sorry.

- Cena vs. HHH:
I don't really see any reason for Triple H to take this one. John wins.

- AJ vs. Shinsuke:
Nakamura takes the title.

- Brock vs. Roman:
Reigns finally ends Lesnar's run as champion.

- Greatest Rumble:
My gut says Braun. I don't think I can handle months of "what are they doing with Bryan? They had him win the Greatest Rumble and since then he's been BURIED. Vince has always hated him! I hope he goes to New Japan and has a six-star match. That'll show 'em!" WWE already caves in to that crowd way too much.

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

ROH matches announced, Ryder hurt, former WWE name visits Impact, Interviews with Bischoff/Coach/Corbin/HHH, Impact cameos, assorted WWE hype, HoFer at WWEPC, Prichard podcast live, Tenille injury update, Raw audience, and Questions on WWE taking chances on Jeff Hardy, the Cena/Nikki relationship, why we haven't seen other promotions on WWE Network, and more spots for women in WWE

ROH has announced the following official matches for this weekend:
-- April 27:
- Flip Gordon vs. Scorpio Sky
- Marty Scurll vs. Kenny King
- Deonna Purrazzo vs. Kelly Klein

-- April 28:
- Shane Taylor vs. Matt Taven vs. Kenny King vs. Beer City Bruiser

Zack Ryder suffered a knee injury during Main Event. He has been pulled from the road as he undergoes an MRI. I hope he's able to be back in the ring before long. He's really been a soldier for WWE.

Rich Swann was backstage at Redemption and the first night of Impact TV tapings. He'd be a good addition from an in-ring standpoint, although certainly there would be potential heat from a PR standpoint.

Eric Bischoff discussed Spike's parent company almost buying part of Impact. That could have been big. Impact had big opportunities in the Spike days, but weren't capable of leveraging them.

Impact made use of local Florida talents in an angle with Su Yung. Team Vision Dojo promoted the association.

Jonathan Coachman discussed WWE aspects he would like to see in golf and more. Coach has a good eye for that.

Baron Corbin discussed the Greatest Rumble, moving to Raw, and more. I can see some "BikerTaker" influences on Baron.

Goldberg, Corey Graves, Renee Young, Adam Cole, and Aleister Black are on CBS Radio's latest "In This Corner" podcast.

Royal Albert Hall promoted WWE's upcoming UK brand events there.

Rugby's Todd Clever tried out for WWE. That could be an interesting next move for him.

Jay White will defend the IWGP United States Championship at War of the Worlds:Toronto. Obviously Toronto isn't in the U.S., but that's a lot closer than where he won the title!

Edge was at the WWE Performance Center recently. It's great he's giving back to the business like that.

Shawn Michaels and Scott Hall will represent WWE at the Cauliflower Alley Club this weekend.

Something to Wrestle With will be live from Jimmy's Famous Seafood on May 7. Jimmy's has really become a destination for those in the business.

Tenille Dashwood will be returning to action this weekend in Great Britain. I'm glad she's going to continue to make a name for herself post-WWE.

Triple H discussed the Greatest Royal Rumble. I hope the company can promote women in the region in the years to come.

Raw dropped to 3.10 million viewers this week. They got big bumps from the night after WM34 and the Superstar Shakeup, but that's passed now.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. While this is the first time Jeff has been in trouble for DWI, he does have a documented history of substance issues. I also would like to see WWE put his health first and foremost, but he's clearly enough of an asset for them they're willing to give him chances and opportunities others wouldn't get.

2 and 3. So, wait, it's a sham if it's on the reality show and it's a sham if it isn't on the reality show? I can definitely see E! trying to get certain things to happen at certain times so they're on camera, but I strongly doubt the whole thing was a work.

4. It sounds like it's Vince's call to feature outside promotions on the service, and he's understandably a little hesitant to do that. Unless there's HUGE demand for that content, it could be a while before it's a real possibility.

5. I don't know if either brand is QUITE big enough for a women's tag title yet. It would be odd to have one tag title across both brands, but that'd be preferable. As for a women's only show, I've been open to the idea of "MYC Live" like they did for the cruiserweights, but I might hold off a while until things are even more stacked to where Raw, Smackdown, NXT, and that show could all sustain themselves.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Interviews with Moose/Rollins/Rosa, more on WOS revival, ROH showcases Punk, WWE wins Webbys, Smackdown visitors, Shinsuke video, more from Saudi tryouts, Prichard podcast notes, WOTW main events, former WWE writer on ROH site, Smackdown audience, GRR on DVD, WWE co-president on using data, HHH plans global developmental system, and Questions on hating Cena, GRR match order, co-branded PPVs, WM34 underperforming, and Steph signing Owens+Zayn

Moose discussed recent Impact departures and more. He has an opportunity to be a top guy now that others have moved on; Impact needs to capitalize on that.

World of Sport will run for ten episodes. Interestingly, they're just calling it WOS Wrestling. Either way, this could be a trial for something bigger, and will have ripple effects on the UK market.

A C.M. Punk compilation has been added to Honorclub, featuring six hours of content from his ROH years. I'm sure that will be popular. It should be noted there's no discussion of Punk returning to ROH or anywhere else in wrestling currently; this is just ROH uploading popular classic content to their streaming service.

WWE won two Webby Awards due to Wrestlemania 33. They definitely hope to win more from this year's event.

Evander Holyfield and D'Angelo Dinero/Elijah Burke were backstage at Smackdown. WWE could easily put Holyfield in their Hall of Fame at some point.

Seth Rollins promoted Greatest Royal Rumble. The brand extension is a smart way to hold off some big feuds for later.

Rosa Mendes talked about her future goals as a wrestler. I wish her well in her "second act." It sounds like she's taking it seriously.

Shinsuke Nakamura's new entrance music has a video. That's pretty cool.

WWE's Saudi trainees continued drills.

"Something Else to Wrestle With"'s second episode focused on the Mega-Powers.

Jerry Lawler and Jim Cornette discussed Lawler's recent stroke.

Dalton Castle vs. Matt Taven will headline War of the Worlds: Lowell on May 9. That's a big spot for both men.

Bullet Club's Cody, Hung Bucks, and Marty Scurll will face Los Ingobernables de Japon in War of the Worlds' Chicago's main event on May 13. So BC will be working together for that show at least.

Former WWE Creative writer Kevin Eck is now writing for ROH's website. Eck does regular columns in Baltimore.

Smackdown drew 2.55 million viewers this week, following the boost from Wrestlemania and the Superstar Shakeup.

Greatest Royal Rumble will be released on a two-DVD set. It's easily an "A" show at this point.

George Barrios discussed how WWE uses consumer data. It's amazing how much information companies can get on people using their products.

Triple H discussed plans for a global developmental system in the vein of territories. That would absolutely change wrestling as we know it. We'll see how this plays out as time goes on.

Something Else To Wrestle With shared a Jim Cornette story. Roman should have taken that advice!

WWE's Saudi trainees practiced suplexes and leapfrogs, as well as working out with Mojo Rawley. They're going pretty hard!

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. All of the above, other than I don't think anyone ever thought he was "fake." Basically fans think he's gotten more opportunities and spotlight than he should.

2. I can't disagree with their points there. Plus, Roman can win both in one night! Kidding.

3. They're putting it over as getting the best of both brands on one show. It's a marketing thing to drive subscriptions.

4. I think that definitely played into it, but ultimately they weren't going to try to do what they did in NJPW. There were too many other things to fill on the card that night.

5. Stephanie picked up two of the hottest agents in wrestling. It was best for business!

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT Reax - 4/25/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's NXT.

-- NXT:
- UE promo:
These guys basically run NXT now. The NA title is a good way to use Cole while others compete for the main championship.

These guys have definitely worked hard to get where they are.

It's crazy to think Dunne is face now. That's good booking.

Really good work.

- Cole vs. Lorcan:
Oney has the right idea here.

Cole is at another level. I hope he lives up to his potential post-NXT.

This is quite good. Oney is someone they can do more with.

That was fun. UE don't cheat because they have to; they cheat because they're assholes.

- Post-match:
Yeah Oney and Danny need to make some more friends if they're going to stand against UE.

- Machinery vs. Riddick/Tino:
Riddick and Tino are headed for Blake and Murphy status if they keep this up.

I do enjoy HM, but they might be obsolete with the Raiders here.

The heels aren't a bad duo. They're just missing some flavor.

So take your pick on who will be the Jannetty of Tino and Riddick.

Fine to get some TV time for each side.

- Post-match:
That was good enough. Obviously the focus is already off Tino and Riddick.

- Shayna video:
I like the establishment of Baszler as the baddest woman on the brand. I'm hyped for an eventual match with Nikki Cross.

- Dakota/Shayna:
Baszler rightly looks like someone you do NOT want to mess with. I love Dakota, but she's in trouble here.

- Kona video:
If he can be as entertaining in the ring as he is in these goofy vignettes, he's got a chance as a lower-level comedy guy. WWE needs all types of wrestlers.

- Women's video:
I'm ready to see some new faces utilized.

- Gargano/Ciampa/LeRae:
I love Johnny and Tommaso. They tore down the house in New Orleans. But there's really a time to move on to something fresh.

This is great, but where can they really go after New Orleans?

Johnny has the worst luck.

- Black/SAnitY:
Aleister vs. Tommaso would be great.

Where is Nikki Cross??? Otherwise, this is cool.

I hope SAnitY can succeed on Smackdown.

- Black vs. EY:
Nice start.

Aleister can absolutely be someone in the business.

Black might trash the whole stable if they keep getting involved.

EY is a very solid technician.

This is nice!

Black brings a lot to the table.

That was pretty badass.

- Post-match:
Aleister isn't done bringing the pain!

Nice angle. Hopefully SAnitY kills some jobbers on Smackdown for a while to show what they're all about.

-- ROH:
This week's episode featured matches already shown at Supercard of Honor.

Smackdown and 205 Live Reax - 4/24/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Smackdown and 205 Live.

Tuesday, April 24, 2018

Raw Reax - 4/23/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Interview with JR, Sami fundraiser reaches goal, former AJPW head passes, Vince honors Cena, WWE Europe lineups, Taker graphic novel, NXT live events set, Titus lawsuit update, WOH injury, McMahons remember Bruno, GRR updates, and Questions on dropping brand-only PPVs, Asuka losing to Charlotte, EVOLVE vs. CZW profitability, Enzo's legal issue, and Brock busting Roman open

Jim Ross put over Ronda Rousey's WWE debut in a conversation with TMZ. It was absolutely a great spectacle worthy of Wrestlemania.

Sami Zayn's Syrian fundraiser reached its goal of $96,000. That's great work.

Former All Japan president Motoko Baba passed away at 78 from liver issues. She and her husband Giant Baba ran the promotion for more than 30 years.

Vince McMahon wished John Cena a happy 41st birthday. John has really outperformed the majority of wrestlers in company history.

WWE's Saudi Arabian tryouts continued. Those guys are TOUGH to make it that far.

Raw's May 19 event in France has:
- Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe (!)
- Braun Strowman vs. Baron Corbin
- Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Bobby Roode vs. Jinder Mahal for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
- Bobby Lashley vs. Elias
- Ronda Rousey vs. Mickie James
- Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
- Nia Jax vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks for the Raw Women's Championship
- Ember Moon and Natalya vs. Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan
- Goldust, Rhyno, Health Slater, and Zack Ryder vs. Chad Gable, Mojo Rawley, Bo Dallas, and Curtis Axel

-- Smackdown's European tour has:
- AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship
- Jeff Hardy vs. Rusev for the U.S. Championship
- Bludgeon Brothers vs. New Day vs. The Usos for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship
- Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair for the Smackdown Women's Championship
- Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
- The Bar vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson
- Asuka, Becky Lynch, and Naomi vs. Absolution and Lana
- Big Cass vs. Tye Dillinger
- Andrade "Cien" Almas vs. Sin Cara
- Aleister Black vs. Alexander Wolfe for the NXT Championship

The Undertaker will be the subject of a graphic novel. That could be AMAZING. Chad Dundas' book was really cool.

NXT will tour Kentucky the weekend of Takeover:Chicago. Ricochet has had two televised matches for the brand and he's already on the ads for the live event tours. He's clearly making a mark.

A lawsuit against Titus O'Neil regarding WWE Swerved has been moved to Florida due to Titus having residence there. A cameraman is suing for damages resulting from an injury sustained when Titus kicked a camera out of his hand following being shocked by a cattle prod. I don't think it's out of the question for him to be compensated for that.

Tenille Dashwood has sustained a shoulder injury and was pulled from independent events this previous weekend due to taking time of to heal. It's unknown when she'll be returning to the ring. I hope she's back in action soon.

Vince, Linda, and Stephanie McMahon represented WWE at Bruno Sammartino's funeral. Very glad to see them attend.

The Greatest Royal Rumble Kickoff show will have Byron Saxton, Jerry Lawler, Booker T., and Jim Ross. I'm surprised at the lack of Corey Graves.

- The Greatest Rumble will air live on a number of Middle Eastern TV channels

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. On paper, they have an incredibly talented roster. In practice, doing that many brand-only shows didn't increase Network subscriber numbers, so they're cutting back some of the lower-card and midcard talents from the shows in favor of focusing on more important stuff. I love seeing more of the undercard, but there's not a huge demand to see some of the really talented, but not heavily featured workers there.

2. I think it was time. Things had gotten stagnant with her being undefeated. She is more than able to be a success despite that and future losses. As long as she's not jobbing clean to Mandy Rose or something, she'll be fine.

3. We do know EVOLVE wasn't doing great before the WWE connection, but there's really no way to know without actually seeing whatever records they keep. A lot of factors go into turning a profit.

Nothing to add to 4, other than I don't expect Enzo back in WWE. I'd be surprised if he does any wrestling appearances going forward; he could very well go into music or something where he can play to his strengths without having to worry about his technical ability.

5. The Wrestling Observer has said the spot was approved ahead of time by Vince. I strongly doubt Brock would just go out there and bludgeon someone without Management's OK.

NJPW names set for ROH UK tour, new ROH merch, Rollins looks back, Saudi Arabian trainees getting more coaching, Redemption and Impact TV notes, Slammiversary 2018 set, and Questions on Absolution's future, Truth in Impact vs. WWE, how the Shakeup works, and how much superstar swapping is too much?

NJPW's Hiroshi Tanahashi, Toru Yano, EVIL, and SANADA have been announced for Honor United in the UK. I'm sure more names will be announced as the tour gets closer.

The Kingdom have a new shirt from ROH. They're rising there, particularly Matt Taven.

Seth Rollins reminisced on watching WWE events when he was younger. I like WWE covering wrestlers' journeys to the company.

Eight Saudi Arabian trainees will get additional WWE coaching. At least one will be in the Greatest Royal Rumble itself. All eight have impressive backgrounds. We'll see if any become full-fledged members of the WWE Performance Center.

Alberto El Patron was originally set to win the Impact World Championship at Redemption. So, they're really reshuffling the deck going forward. It will be interesting to see how long Pentagon will hold the title, and what the future holds for Aries.

Austin Aries is apparently only booked for two of this week's Impact tapings. That makes sense given the surprise title change; Aries clearly has priorities independent of Impact. They'll have to book with that in mind.

Konnan was backstage helping out at Redemption. I wonder what they'll do with his "kidnapping" angle, and if he's moving into a behind-the-scenes role primarily.

Sonjay Dutt has returned to working in production and creative. We'll see if he's back on commentary at the upcoming TV tapings.

Grado was backstage at Redemption, so he should be back on Impact TV soon. I'm not sure what they'll do with him.

Slammiversary XVI will take place on July 22 in Ontario. We could be in for a wild ride before then if the road to Redemption was any indication.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I definitely think Mandy and Sonya should try to get special treatment from Paige, establishing them as a heel duo. I'd keep them together for now, but I do think there will be a time to split them. As for them potentially getting a new leader, I don't dislike the idea of Tamina returning in that role. Or a debuting Nikki Cross?

2. You KNOW that was a Vince Russo move. Basically, if it was word for word, that would be illegal, but it would be ridiculously expensive for both sides to go to court over it, and what would really be gained? Both sides have better uses of their time and money.

3. Firstly, it's worth noting Truth was pushed as a top name in Impact because they didn't have a ton of other options at the time. That said, I thought Truth as a top heel in 2011 was AMAZING and it's a shame things fell apart.

4. It certainly seems like the two sides work out trades and signings from NXT, given Angle talking about specifically getting Miz on Smackdown to work with Bryan. The way I see it, both sides plan things out some time in advance and it's all executed when the Shakeup is made public.

5. I'm fine with the number of swaps, since it freshens up things all over the card. Of course, if they move people just to have a certain quota of moves, that's a waste.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Redemption Reax

Read on for my thoughts on Impact Wrestling's PPV event.

Sunday, April 22, 2018

PWG venue update, more on WWE's commentary change, why Alexa isn't in South Africa, Rock doing special Rampage screening for high school, Interviews with Jinder/Y2J, Shield DVD note, Saudi tryouts continue, GRR on traditional PPV, new Network series this week, WOS tapings set, WWE seeking hires, Smackdown live event notes, and Questions on Power Plant successes, Rusev's GRR status, WWE traveling in Saudi Arabia, and beginning covering wrestling

PWG's home venue in Reseda, California has yet to have been approved, so there's a chance the promotion could still run there past May.

Booker T. is replacing Jonathan Coachman on Raw this week due to Coach taking an assignment for The Golf Channel. Coach will be back next week.

Alexa Bliss is reportedly missing Raw's South African tour due to an undisclosed minor cosmetic surgery. I hope she's back in action soon.

The Rock is bringing a number of fans to a special showing of Rampage after being invited to a high school prom. I imagine he'll get a lot of prom invitations after this!

Jinder Mahal talked to Natalya about his Wrestlemania moment. Cena vs. Jinder also would have been better than how Cena vs. Taker turned out.

The Shield's July DVD will have one disc devoted to each member, including previously unreleased matches. That's clever.

Triple H and Mojo Rawley met potential WWE hires at the company's Saudi Arabian tryouts. It's interesting Mojo's there instead of working Smackdown live events.

The Greatest Royal Rumble will also be carried on traditional PPV through Verizon and Comcast if you're crazy enough to spend $54.99 instead of watching it on THE AWARD-WINNING WWE NETWORK AVAILABLE FOR $9.99 A MONTH.

WWE Network this coming week will feature a new series, "WWE Marquee Matches." Each episode will focus on an historic match. This week has three episodes devoted to three different Royal Rumbles.

- Notably, there is no Flashback Friday theme for the second straight week.

World of Sport has announced five tapings from May 10 through May 12. The revived project will air on ITV, and free tickets are already available to be requested. This has the potential to be a really big project in the UK, and WWE will absolutely be keeping an eye on the proceedings as they plan to expand their own UK series.

WWE is seeking a director to work out of the WWE Performance Center's Content Innovation Lab as well as a director of global strategy at WWE headquarters.

Chris Jericho discussed a number of topics. Using a fireball in 2018 WWE would be insane, and I wouldn't assume it would make people cheer Roman. They're pretty content to boo him.

Smackdown's April 21 live event began with a ten-bell salute to Bruno Sammartino. Jeff Hardy and Big Cass worked the show, as neither were set for Raw's South African tour. Jeff Hardy teamed with Randy Orton to beat Rusev Day, while Big Cass defeated Tye Dillinger.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. The only people to be in that same league would be DDP and The Giant/Big Show. I think you could argue Big Show has been more successful as far as being employed a lot longer and winning more championships, although certainly Goldberg was a really big name in his own right.

2. He's back on to be in the casket match, and still in the Rumble match itself. He was just having fun.

3. The Saudi government is bringing them in, so I think they're going to be pretty well protected.

Nothing to add to 4.

5. I had a fan "journal" when I was 11 covering what was happening on WWF TV. I was in fan groups online at 14 and started doing this blog at 21.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Redemption preview

Read on for my thoughts on tonight's Impact Wrestling PPV.

Friday, April 20, 2018

Podcast notes, WWE tryouts begin, Knockout returning to Impact, Redemption-UK note, more big names booked for GRR match, Lashley update, LU names settle with AAA, legend and top women's name recovering from surgery, ROH backstage incident, ROH TV visitor, All In broadcast note, Bryan live event update, WWE gets protection order, Ziggler contract update, Foley promotes tour, ROH planning for cable series, another NJPW name set for WOTW, ROH announces first names for UK tour, recent Impact exec returns to WWE, another Hogan update, Raw+NXT live event notes, and Questions on NXT name changes, Impact's direction, Cena and Nikki working an angle, Jeff Hardy's DUI, and wrestlers preparing for their matches

Bruce Prichard was on Jim Ross' latest podcast. JR also discussed Bruno Sammartino and more.

 - Prichard also answered questions about his WWE Network podcast.

WWE's Saudi Arabian tryouts have begun. It's probably just a matter of how many names get signed; they'd really love to have stars from the area.

Winter, formerly Katie Lea Burchill, is advertised for Impact's June tapings in Ontario. It will be good to see her again.

Redemption will air in the UK on the Global Wrestling Network rather than on Spike.

The Great Khali, Shane McMahon, and Mark Henry have all been announced for the Greatest Royal Rumble match. WWE is pulling all kinds of strings to fill that match with 50 names.

- Bobby Lashley is advertised as being in the Intercontinental Championship match at the event. So, that's now presumably a five-way match instead of just Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor vs. Samoa Joe vs. The Miz. Either way, that match should be awesome.

Pentagon Jr. and Fenix will be able to use those names outside of AAA, and AAA has dropped legal issues against the pair.

Dick "Destroyer" Beyer will not make the Cauliflower Alley Club banquet this year due to recent heart surgery. I hope he's able to fully recover soon.

LuFisto recently had surgery due to her cervical cancer. Hopefully she's able to return soon.

Flip Gordon got in a fight with an extra at ROH's April 14 TV taping, as this extra was aparently in Christopher Daniels' seat. He was asked to move and refused, leading to a scuffle. Flip won easily. We'll see if that extra gets booked again after that.

- Rosa Mendes was also at the show. I hope she's not part of WOH going forward.

All In will stream live on Facebook. That will be big.

Daniel Bryan is currently not scheduled for any live events until the European tour from May 16 through May 19. That's interesting; I don't know if that means WWE is still a little cautious about him returning full-time or what.

WWE has received an order of protection against a fan who has had repeated incidents at the WWE Performance Center, including being shot in 2015. The fan had posted threats against the company right before Wrestlemania. I really, really hope that man gets the help he needs, as he's got serious mental health problems.

Dolph Ziggler has apparently not signed a new WWE contract as previously reported. Dolph's current deal ends this summer, and he had previous discussed wanting a longer break from the company than he got in his United States Championship angle. How about Dolph vs. Drew this summer to wrap his run up? I've been very vocal about Dolph, but I think he could really reinvent himself by working somewhere else and changing things up like Drew, AJ, EC3, Lashley, etc. before him.

Mick Foley promoted his ongoing tour. He will ALWAYS be remembered for that HIAC match.

ROH has produced a pilot for a national cable series, using Final Battle 2017. If their parent company purchases Tribune Entertainment as expected, WGN America could be home for that series. That would absolutely be a game-changer for everyone.

Rocky Romero will work two dates of the upcoming War of the Worlds tour. That's cool.

ROH announced the first batch of names for their UK tour with NJPW, which is now called Honor United. We could very well see Bully Ray back in action on those shows.

John "Big" Gaburick has returned WWE, working with production after being a key executive in Impact in recent years.

Taz discussed Bruno Sammartino on his most recent podcast.

Brooke Hogan once again discussed Hulk potentially returning to WWE. I'm ready for it to happen so I don't have to keep running stories/questions about it!

Roman Reigns was busted open during his match with Samoa Joe on Raw's April 19 event. After winning the match, he was unable to take pictures with fans due to health concerns. That's understandable.

NXT's April 19 live event in Washington, DC began with a ten-bell salute to Bruno Sammartino.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Basically Raw and/or Smackdown creative has a different vision from NXT Creative.

2. They definitely need to take things six months or so at a time. We've seen a lot of regime changes leading to big overhauls of the company in the past few years. What they need now is some stability under one direction with one talent roster. Some departures are going to be inevitable; they just need to try to weather the storm as much as possible rather than trying to have a new game-changing angle every three months.

3. That would be a really cruel work, honestly. I think viewers would turn on all players involved if they did that.

4. Jeff Hardy is obviously very valuable for WWE. He's getting leeway others don't get and aren't going to get. It's a shame, but that's how the world works sometimes.

5. Some people want to get right to it and others wait until closer to showtime. Obviously someone like Goldust, Jeff Hardy, or Demon Finn Balor is going to take more time for logistical reasons.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Main Event Reax - 4/20/18, Vader back in the hospital, WWN tryout set, WWE:UK tapings name change, Saudi tryout update, NXT live event notes, podcast guests, Ricochet's first NXT merch, NXT name on outside PPV, Redemption opening, more Bucks merch, Pro Wrestling Tees signing, Booker back at the desk, White on WotW dates, Impact audience, Bruno special after Raw, Smackdown match announced, and Questions on how royalties are split, producing international commentary, Andre's pay, and the former Sunny

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 4/19/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Podcast guests, Redemption preview, Impact departure, GRR WWE Title match set, Flair Drip on Tonight Show, WM33 venue soliciting fan support, Heat coming to Network soon, GLOW return date, Smackdown audience, Raw live event note, Impact staying on UK TV, Steiner conference call, territory star passes, and Questions on how to send a message to Vince, ECW's 911, Raw 25's success or lack thereof, and Bryan's in-ring future

Allie and Braxton Sutter are on Stone Cold's latest podcast. I hope we can see Allie at least in WWE someday.

Impact has a preview show for Redemption. It's going to be tough to follow Wrestlemania weekend!

Tyrus has left Impact once again. He was brought back to do a podcast on their Twitch channel that never materialized. Without that and with no plans to use him in a prominent role, I can't blame him for leaving. He had a grand total of four matches in this run.

AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship is official for Greatest Royal Rumble. I'm curious if they'll have a third round at Backlash. GRR's timing puts WWE in an awkward place, booking wise.

Ric Flair was on The Tonight Show to help perform "Ric Flair Drip." That's great!

Wrestlemania 33's venue is seeking fan support for the event returning there. Orlando is pretty much a given for a future show with NXT being based there.

WWE Network is preparing to upload Heat to its VOD section. The material is all ready.

British Strong Style is on Chris Jericho's latest podcast. I'd love to see Jericho face Pete Dunne at some point.

Netflix has announced GLOW's second season's premiere date. The first season was a big hit.

Smackdown drew 2.80 million viewers Tuesday night. WWE made the right call doing the Superstar Shakeup the week after WM34 to try to keep some of that casual audience around.

Raw's current live event tour doesn't reflect the Superstar Shakeup. That's not a surprise; it would have been a nightmare to change travel to South Africa for so many names. It will likely be a few weeks before live events reflect the new rosters due to so many travel arrangements already being booked.

Impact Wrestling will remain on UK TV. It will also air on the GWN app at the same time it airs in the U.S.

Scott Steiner had a conference call for Impact. It's every bit as amazing as you would think.

Territory star "Number One" Paul Jones also passed away, at the age of 75. He wrestled all over the world.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Show up, buy merchandise for another wrestler, bring a sign supporting that other wrestler, and react accordingly to that other wrestler (booing if they're a heel, cheering if they're a face). Don't throw beach balls. Don't do "ironic" chants for C.M. Punk or the commentators or whatever. If you show that you are willing to go to shows to support certain wrestlers and aren't just going to disrupt things, WWE is much more likely to listen.

2. He pretty much ended his career in 2001, it looks like. Although he worked a charity show in 2006. I don't see anything about him wrestling since then.

3. Given the audience that show got, WWE could easily disagree.

4. I'm fine with him challenging for the WWE Title at Summerslam. I do think he should "earn his way back" and face some of the new names before then, though. He's been out of title contention for quite a while.

5. I guess they didn't want to use that visual for that venue.

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT and ROH Reax - 4/18/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's NXT and ROH.

Bruno Sammartino passes away at 82

WWE reported the legend's passing and gave a rundown of his career. His importance to the company's early years can not be overstated.

WWE.com covered social media reaction to Bruno's passing from WWE superstars.

Arnold Schwarzenegger honored the man he inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Pittsburgh's mayor released a statement on the local icon's passing.

WWE did a ten-bell salute at Raw's April 18 live event. I hope they do that through the Greatest Royal Rumble. Bruno held the WWWF Championship for a total of more than ten years.

The City of Pittsburgh's Twitter account saluted Bruno.

NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers honored the hometown star

Gabriel Iglesias remembered Bruno.

Pat McAfee honored Bruno.

Comic artist Greg Capullo honored Bruno.

Journalist Salena Zito remembered Bruno.

NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins remembered Bruno.

PWInsider collected a lot of wrestling names remembering the icon.

Bruno's passing was covered by New York Times, Pittsburgh's KDKA, Pittsburgh's Post-Gazette, the New York Daily News, the Los Angeles Times, Sportscenter, TMZ, and FOX News.

Madison Square Garden honored a man with a long history in the venue. The venue's marquee also honored Bruno.

Jim Cornette discussed Bruno's passing on his latest podcast.

Highspots.com put together a video to promote Bruno.

Bruno Mars honored the man he was named after.

More wrestling coming up.

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Miz hosts MTV show, Raw name change, former World Champion to MLW, Jeff Hardy legal update, Cornette's graphic novel gets Kickstarter, Goldust offers advice, WWE doing big Saudi tryout, NXT name working PROGRESS tournament, NJPW team working WOTW, Bryan vs. Miz already booked, Raw audience, pre-Smackdown dark match, WWE seeking live event producer, another Woken trademark, WWE and 2K sued by tattoo artist, and Questions on wrestlers doing and not doing conventions, Joey Styles leaving wrestling, Nicholas winning the tag title, how WWE did Taker vs. Cena, and Bully Ray in WWE Creative

The Miz hosted the finale of MTV's The Challenge: Vendetta on Tuesday night.

Apollo Crews is now going by both first and last name again. That's good, since his merchandise has AC on it.

The former Jack Swagger will appear at MLW's May 3 TV taping, managed by Colonel Robert Parker. The two sides have a "multi-fight deal," which I'm guessing means a short-term contract. I wish Impact or ROH would pick him up.

Jeff Hardy will have a hearing on May 14 for his DUI arrest. I absolutely see why some are upset he was "rewarded" following that arrest with the United States Championship. He certainly has some leeway others don't get for that sort of thing.

Jim Cornette launched a Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming graphic novel. There's clearly some serious interest in the project.

Goldust offered help to today's generation of wrestlers, leading some to think he was looking to retire. He then confirmed that was not the case.

WWE is doing a large Saudi Arabian tryout. They're committed to developing stars from all over the globe.

Kassius Ohno will work PROGRESS' Super Strong Style tournament in early May. I'm surprised Kassius is still hanging around in NXT, but it's cool to see him getting that opportunity.

Roppongi 3K have been announced for the entire War of the Worlds Tour. They have a good deal of history in ROH.

Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz has been booked for WWE's UK tour. I hope Miz doesn't have to stop using the moves he stole from his former protege; they've really added to his repertoire.

Raw drew 3.62 million viewers Monday night. They kept a decent amount of the post-Mania audience.

Tye Dillinger defeated Primo before Smackdown come on the air. Blehhhh.

WWE is seeking a live event producer. That's interesting, as I figured they'd use someone already in the business if possible.

WWE is trademarking "Woken Warrior" in reference to Matt Hardy. That's a good name for his fans.

WWE and 2K are being sued for using Randy Orton's tattoos in their games, with the tattoo artist asserting ownership of her designs. That's a pretty interesting point, actually.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. While not many people are always happy at their job, and I'm sure it can be a drag talking to that many people in a row while recovering from being bodyslammed and an hours-long flight, it could cost the workers "repeat business" if they're not kind to people who are paying to see them. They should be careful.

2. I think so. He was pretty much run out of the business for making a non-PG political reference right after the 2016 election at a show when he was explicitly told not to make any such references. He apologized profusely in person and released a public statement, but that was seemingly the final straw after he had recently been dropped by WWE for giving his blunt opinions during an interview on the WWE Facebook page. I hope he's doing well with whatever he's doing now.

3. Heyman has a lot more going for him than doing the convention circuit. Some people get enough of their "day job" at actual shows and don't feel like doing additional appearances. I imagine some also don't look forward to dealing with potentially rude/entitled fans.

4. It was a fun babyface moment on a kids' show. WWE clearly has other plans for the tag title and for Braun, so it was their way of getting out of having either The Bar or Braun holding the title ahead of the Superstar Shakeup.

5.a. Taker was willing to stay retired, but Cena kept calling him out, so he had to put John in his place. Outside of that, I think if they weren't going to have a "real" match, John should have been in the underwhelming AJ/Shinsuke feud. It would have elevated both men and the WWE Title itself.

5.b. Bully's not on WWE Creative because every pitch would be about how he could be in the spotlight and get the biggest payday. Bully would rather be an important figure in ROH than have a regular gig as a U.S./IC level guy in WWE.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Superstar Shakeup Night Two Reax

Read on for my thoughts on the second half of the 2018 Superstar Shakeup.

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Cena on Nikki split, more on MLW Fusion, WWE debuting in new market, assorted WWE press, another former world champion in GRR?, LU names facing off at Redemption, WWE's rise in new book, indie promoter hospitalized, Andre replay audience, legend booked for WOTW, more on Prichard podcast, injured name at Raw, Inerviews wih Goldberg/Kofi/Shaniqua, GRR match back on, Impact-UK TV update, and Questions on Brock vs. Roman at GRR, Alexa's future, Cena's future, and GRR overshadowing January

John Cena seemingly commented on his split from Nikki Bella. He should honestly write a motivation book. That's pretty poignant.

MLW: Fusion will have titled episodes. This week's episode is called "When Worlds Collide," while next week's episode is called "Havoc in Swerve City." I don't dislike that idea, although I'm interested in how it will work.

- MLW released an ad promoting the series' debut.

WWE will run Norway for the first time ever on November 1, with Raw doing a live event there. That's a pretty cool milestone; I hope it's a success.

Mickie James, Becky Lynch, and Lana were on the American Country Music Awards red carpet Sunday night.

Mark Henry and other WWE Hall of Famers were part of an anti-bullying event in Texas.

The IIconics, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, are on Lilian Garcia's latest podcast.

Nikki Cross has joined Instagram. I hope SAnitY can be big post-NXT; they've all got the talent to succeed.

Brooke Hogan spoke about her father returning to WWE on Access Hollywood. If he's not at the Greatest Rumble, I think it could be a while before he's back in the fold.

Booker T. is traveling to the Greatest Royal Rumble, but it's unknown if he'll be in the match itself. That wouldn't be a bad move at all.

UpUpDownDown did a live stream to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That's fantastic!

Lucha Underground's Drago and Aerostar will have a singles match at Redemption. It's a great move to boost interest for the show.

WWE going national will be covered in a book fittingly called "Death of the Territories: Expansion, Betrayal, and the War that Changed Pro Wrestling Forever" releasing on September 18. The book will also focus on how other territories acted in response to the company's rise. That sounds quite interesting.

AIW promoter John Thorne has been hospitalized with pneumonia. I wish him a full recovery.

The Andre the Giant documentary drew 275,000 viewers for its replay. It should pop up on WWE Network before long.

WWE's women's evolution DVD will be released June 16. I look forward to that.

Jushin "Thunder" Liger has been booked for all four nights of ROH/NJPW's War of the Worlds Tour in May. He has some incredible longevity.

Jerry Lawler has opened a Pro Wrestling Tees store. I'm shocked there's no Puppies shirt.

- Lawler also now has a beer named after him in Memphis. That's hilarious.

Conrad Thompson discussed Something Else To Wrestle With. It's big WWE is willing to pretty much let them do what they usually do. As for talking about Randy Savage on WWE Network, that could REALLY get them in hot water. Talk about playing with fire!

- The show's first episode is coming April 18.

Big Cass was backstage at Raw, which could mean he's coming to Smackdown tonight. I hope he can do something meaningful there.

Goldberg talked about his WWE comeback. I think they got all the could out of it, although I can't say I wouldn't want to see him face John Cena or Roman Reigns.

Kofi Kingston discussed New Day's book. They've been wildly successful, although I don't know how much more they can get out of the act at this point.

WWE Network promoted future PPVs featuring Raw and Smackdown going forward.

Rusev is back on as The Undertaker's opponent at the Greatest Royal Rumble. The match remains a casket match. Not sure what happened there. I hope Rusev doesn't go down in three minutes like Cena.

Impact is negotiating a new UK TV deal as their current one approaches its end. Discussions had been stalled due to scheduling issues on both sides. I certainly hope they stay in one of their top three markets.

Linda McMahon will give a commencement speech at her alma mater on May 4. hat's pretty cool.

WWE alumna Shaniqua/Linda Miles was profiled. I haven't seen that name in quite a while.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I think that's a strong possibility, especially since Brock is not currently set to work Summerslam.

2. She'll be fine. Not everyone can be in the title picture at any given time.

3. Cena jobbed to Taker AND Nikki. He's probably ready to get this month behind him.

4. Jack is a common nickname for Johns in general, as it was for JFK.

5. If it's a one-time thing and the winner doesn't get a title shot, the January Rumble will be fine. I'm worried if it becomes a regular yearly thing, though, for just that reason. We'll see what happens.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Superstar Shakeup Night One Reax

Read on for my thoughts on the first half of the 2018 WWE Superstar Shakeup.

Raw Reax - 4/16/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Monday, April 16, 2018

Vader recovery update, Swann returns to the ring, Rusev teasing leaving WWE, WWE name gets an Emmy, two WWE names at UFC, Cena splits from Nikki, and Questions on a Mania intermission, WWE's stance on Rusev, what Brock did and didn't do at Mania, WWE moving their audiences, and Roman getting another title match

Vader is now out of the hospital. I hope he recovers well.

Fich Swann returned to the ring at CZW's Best of the Best 17. I hope things go well for him and his family going forward, inside and outside the ring. If him wrestling is the best way to achieve that, I'm in full support of him wrestling again.

Rusev is teasing departing WWE after being pulled from the casket match at Greatest Royal Rumble. So far this all seems to be storyline.

Scott Stanford won a New York Emmy for his news show. He's very talented.

Dolph Ziggler and Becky Lynch were at Saturday's UFC event.

John Cena and Nikki Bella announced they are breaking off their engagement and splitting after six years as a couple. That's got to be a tough situation for them; I wish them both the best professionally and personally.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It's a good idea in theory, but they would run the risk of fans deciding to do something else rather than watch the second half as it airs. I don't see it happening.

2. They gave him a spot at Mania they weren't initially going to give him, and he was announced for a match with The Undertaker on a very big show in Saudi Arabia. That would have been a really big spot for him, even in a loss. Heck, he only had to last four minutes to do better than Cena did! I hope the die-hard fans didn't cost Rusev a big spot on that show by protesting the casket match. THAT would be cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

3. With Brock signing a new, big deal right six days before Mania, why would he be upset? Everything went as Vince, etc. wanted it to before the show.

4. I'm sure they have some kind of legal protection to arrange the audience as they want to. You still got to see the show live.

5. After kicking out of five F5s, and only going down when Brock beat him bloody, Kurt Angle was probably impressed enough to give him another shot.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Main Event Reax - 4/14/18, Rey booked for AAA show, Interview with Tenille, who's on Ride Along this week, Flashback Friday done?, Prichard podcast update, new Redemption match, Nigel update, Ellering on leaving Authors, and Questions on Raw's first female main event, a weekly MYC show, making Mania earlier, and Paige as GM

-- Main Event:
- Andrews vs. Nese:
I like Nese's power.

This is some good back-and-forth.

That's a BIG moonsault for Main Event.

Some basic work now, but fine to fill time.

Now things are heating up.

That was a pretty impressive ending! Good work.

- L. H. Party vs. Gallagher/TJP/Ariya:
Nice start.

I liked the crazy number of falls. They're making this count.

This is going really well!

I like Gallagher's toughness here.

There's good action here.

Metalik's agility is always amazing.

Everyone here is delivering.

Impressive!

Rey Mysterio will work AAA's June 3 event. He's getting some nice international bookings as a free agent.

Tenille Dashwood discussed her ROH status and more. Hopefully she's a cornerstone of WOH going forward.

"WWE Ride Along" after Raw Monday will have the teams of New Day and Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin. I can only imagine what a car ride with New Day would be like.

WWE Network's Flashback Friday theme this week was set to be "April's Other Big Events," but it looks like they're not doing themed content this week. We'll see if the concept returns next week.

Bruce Prichard's podcast will begin taping Monday. It's scheduled for 13 weeks (which is one quarter of a year). I'm curious how it will go and if WWE will invest in more projects like this.

Redemption will now feature Brian Cage vs. Taiji Ishimori vs. El Hijo del Fantasma vs. DJZ vs. Trevor Lee vs. Dezmond Xavier. Given how Cage has been booked so far, they'll have to be careful in how they book him here. Cage winning to face the winner of Sydal vs. Petey would be a big next feud.

Nigel McGuinness missed 205 Live due to his wife giving birth. That's a happy reason to get two weeks off the show.

Paul Ellering seemingly commented on being split from the Authors of Pain. Many speculated the 64-year-old didn't want to be on the road full-time.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Basically they'd rather promote the better match between two regular wrestlers than the match involving a McMahon.

2. That would be pretty expensive. They should only do something like that if they know it will lead to an increase in subscriptions. If people want to see that, they need to watch the hell out of the second MYC.

Nothing to add to 3.

4. At this point WWE has done so many events in the evening that it would be a big change to move the show earlier. It could be worth a try, though.

5. That's a good use of someone they have under contract as a talent but is no longer active as a wrestler, like the GM she's replacing.

More wrestling tomorrow.

More on Brock's new deal, why Mania went down the way it did, WWE Network looking at licensing other promotions, Mania weekend sellouts, ZSJ contract update, UK project updates, Andre audience, why The Snake and Davey Jr. had issues, WWE interested in recent LU departure?, Mania weekend incidents, Orlando seeking another Mania, more one man shows with Heyman, why Bam Bam wasn't in the HoF this year, WWE scouting female talents, Total Divas cast notes, Ronda on European tour, Raw heading to South America, Interviews with Stephanie/Alberto, New Day promotes WWE Network, big WWE YouTube milestone, JR injured, Nicholas' entrance video released, Impact audience, WWE UK main event set, new lucha site launched, Mania DVD changes, NXT live event notes, and Questions on Barely Legal

Brock Lesnar's WWE contract expires before Summerslam and allows him to negotiate a UFC fight. It's also a significant raise from his previous deal, which isn't surprising, since he likely wants to return to UFC as soon as possible. UFC is already pitching a fight to him. We'll see what happens after the Greatest Royal Rumble. If he's not working Summerslam, WWE could very well have paid him a fortune to work one cage match.

- It's expected Brock will be back in WWE in some fashion after this deal, even if he does go to UFC for some time. WWE is willing to pay an extraordinary amount of money and make a lot of concessions to keep him in their company.

Brock Lesnar defeating Roman Reigns was kept secret for a lot of people for as long as possible, with the script and production meeting indicating Roman was going over.

- Brock and Vince McMahon had some sort of confrontation after the main event, with Brock throwing the Universal Championship at the chairman. It's unknown what the nature of this was, although some are speculating it was part of selling the narrative of Brock "going off-script" by causing Reigns to bleed in their match. Vince, Reigns, and Brock all agreed on that direction.

The Undertaker's match with John Cena was reportedly so short due to Taker's condition at his current age. The build was deliberately put together to downplay it being one of the main events of the show. I'd much rather they went with Cena vs. Styles vs. Nakamura and never used Taker if he can only do a few spots at this point.

WWE has sent out a survey asking if Network subscribers want to see NJPW, ROH, and Impact footage on the service, which would mean WWE licensing footage from the companies. They'll only  pursue that expense if there's a lot of demand and the other companies are willing to go that route.

Wrestlemania, Takeover:New Orleans, and Supercard of Honor were legitimate sellouts.

Zack Sabre, Jr. has signed a new full-time NJPW deal. He continues to grow his profile.

ITV is looking to do tapings this summer for a limited UK series. That could be a really big project there.

WWE is expected to sign more UK names and begin a regular series there shortly after their announced June dates. That would be a big move for them.

The Andre the Giant documentary drew 931,000 viewers. That's a big success there.

The Jake Roberts/Davey Boy Smith, Jr. incident was due to remarks Roberts and Scott Hall had made knocking Davey's father.

WWE could be interested in Angelico now that he's left LU. We'll see what comes out of that, if anything.

Alicia Fox had an argument with Ronda Rousey's husband the night before Wrestlemania. However, this was not why she wasn't part of the women's battle royal. She has yet to be cleared to return to the ring.

Orlando is looking to host Wrestlemania again in either 2023 or 2025. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see that.

Paul Heyman is in talks to do more Q&A shows. He's a treasure.

Bam Bam Bigelow was held off from the Hall of Fame this year in order to be part of the Hall next year when they return to an area where he was from and worked frequently.

WWE's upcoming Hardy Boyz DVD will include Impact footage due to a licensing deal between the two sides. I wouldn't read too much into that; it's just for the one project.

WWE was scouting at SHIMMER's April 7 event. I would expect a number of names from there to work the second Mae Young Classic.

Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose will be on the next season of "Total Divas." We'll see what that means for the future of Absolution.

Ronda Rousey will be part of WWE's upcoming European tour, appearing May 16 in Switzerland, May 17 in Austria, May 18 in Italy, and May 19 in France. Her role is currently unknown; they could easily just have her tap Dana Brooke out each night.

Raw will run a show in Argentina on December 6. I'm curious if they'll have some Latin talent on the show they normally wouldn't use (e.g. Andrade Almas).

Stephanie McMahon spoke on People TV. She continues to be built as one of the faces of the company as Vince ages and focuses on the XFL.

New Day promoted WWE Network. Pretty cute.

WWE's YouTube channel has hit 25 million viewers. That will almost certainly be mentioned in a conference call soon.

Alberto El Patron discussed his Impact departure and more:
- Umm, Alberto was the one going on social media and challenging New Day and the Usos to fight him at his restaurant, bashing Triple H, etc. There were real issues that led to his WWE relationship going south, and the airport situation with Paige led to a police investigation. This isn't a case of the media being out to get him.

- I strongly doubt Impact would have released him with two weeks left on his contract if he had a family emergency, unless it was just a matter of him not telling anyone in management what the heck was going on during a weekend when he was set to wrestle and sign autographs ahead of one of Impact's biggest shows of the year. Impact was willing to sign him to another contract for even more money than he was making as the highest-paid member of the roster. I find Alberto's story hard to believe.

- I wonder if he'll change his tune if WWE offers him a multi-year deal.

Jim Ross has been diagnosed with a fractured vertebra. OUCH. Those are some scary bruises.

Aleister Black is on the latest Edge and Christian podcast.

Nicholas has an entrance video now. That was a lot of fun, and I'm glad it didn't overstay its welcome. I wonder if we'll see him again as an adult.

Impact Wrestling drew 381,000 fans this week, bouncing back well after last week's episode went against USA Network's Wrestlemania special.

WWE:UK's June 18 show will feature Undisputed Era's Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, and Roderick Strong against British Strong Style of Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, and Trent Seven. That should be a barnburner.

Masked Republic and Asteri Networks have launched LuchaCentral.com to focus on (as you might expect) lucha news and content. That's a good idea to boost attention for that style of wrestling.

Wrestlemania 34's DVD release will not include this year's Hall of Fame ceremony due to its length. However, the matches from Kickoff will be on the show, as well as the complete episode of Raw following WM34. The Blu-ray release will also feature some content for the Smackdown after WM34.

At NXT's April 13 live event in Florida:
- The former Nixon Newell debuted as Steffanie Newell, teaming with Dakota Kai in a loss to Reina Gonzalez and Vanessa Borne.
- Jeet Rama worked his first live event since February 24, losing to Fabian Aichner.
- The War Raiders, formerly War Machine, are just going by Hanson and Rowe. They defeated Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan in their first live event match.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1-5. Long story short, ECW was a pretty chaotic place for a number of reasons, and that was especially true that night.

Friday, April 13, 2018

Assorted WWE press, Steen back on PWT, Network subscribers get WM34 bonus, Greatest Rumble match change, Superstar Shakeup note, another former WWE Champion at Greatest Rumble, Rock doing BET series, WWE awards, WWE Q1 results release date, Impact ONO show set, and Questions on heat on Stone Cold, Brock vs. Rock backstage, Aksana's whereabouts, Mania weekend, and Ronda's in-ring frequency going forward

Jeff Jarrett discussed seeing Vince McMahon before his Hall of Fame induction.

Mark Henry and Bully Ray discussed going into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Kevin Steen has returned to Pro Wrestling Tees for a limited time, playing off his WWE "firing." That's a clever idea, and makes sure Steen and Generico can sell merchandise while Owens and Zayn have been fired.

WWE Network subscribers received a digital Wrestlemania 34 program. That's pretty cool.

Former WWE official Tim White recently spoke to Taz and the Moose about Andre the Giant.

Rusev and Lana discussed the Greatest Royal Rumble. It could indeed be Taker's last match, but how many times have we said that over the years?

- The Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho was announced after this interview, with Jericho replacing Rusev.  The match is still a casket match. I'm not 100% sure what to make of that change, other than this match being a bigger profile.

Smackdown will not have a live event Monday night, as those talents will be at the Superstar Shakeup on Raw. It will likely take some time for live event rosters to catch up with what happens at the Shakeup.

Rey Mysterio has been booked for the Greatest Royal Rumble in a capacity to be announced. For now, this is just a one-time appearance, rather than a sign of Rey signing a contract. It can certainly lead to further appearances, however.

The Rock is producing a six-episode docu-series for BET. That's a big project for him.

WWE won a number of sports social media awards.

WWE's Q1 2018 results will be announced on May 3.

WWE has trademarked "Global Localization" for use as a show name. It will be interesting to see what comes of that.

Impact Wrestling will tape a One Night Only show on June 3 in Ontario, with Pentagon Jr. already announced. Good to see them making use of other promotions and outside talents to boost their brand.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I don't think there's anything to that, especially since he was on Raw 25.

2. Brock clocks in, does what he has to do, and clocks out. Rock has his own dressing room, but enjoys being there.

3. It looks like she doesn't even do appearances any more. She's left the "Aksana" days behind.

4. There was definitely something for everyone that weekend.

5. I'd think it will be a case of them not wanting to overexpose her by having her work just to have her in action every so often. Rather, they'll use her when there's a plan in place to use her in a meaningful way. In the meantime, she'll keep training.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 4/12/18

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Thursday, April 12, 2018

Podcast notes, ex-WWE name on Ronda's debut, Greatest Rumble match announced (and later changed), two LU departures, Mojo chops a fan, Andre bonus clip, potential Extreme Rules main event, Lawler discloses health issue, more ROH matches for this weekend, Smackdown audience, and Questions on DVDs declining, The Wrestling Album, the Greatest Rumble, Henry's WWE run, and weather issues at WM35

Bruce Prichard is on Jim Ross' latest podcast.

Chris Jericho's latest podcast features Shinsuke Nakamura's guitarist from Wrestlemania.

Eve Torres-Gracie discussed Ronda Rousey's WWE debut. I'm a little surprised Eve wasn't at the women's Royal Rumble.

The Undertaker vs. Rusev in a casket match was initially advertised for The Greatest Royal Rumble Wednesday. That would have been big for Rusev, although he almost definitely would have lost.

Angelico and Jack Evans announced they have left Lucha Underground. I haven't seen anything regarding their next moves.

Mojo Rawley chopped a (willing) fan in a bar.

Ric Flair was part of an Andre the Giant bonus clip. The documentary has really made a splash.

Extreme Rules on July 15 is currently set to feature AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin. We're a long way from then, so I wouldn't assume that will take place.

Jerry Lawler spoke about having a stroke in March, but recovering in three days. That's SCARY. I'm glad he doesn't seem to be suffering lasting effects.

ROH has announced:
- Silas Young vs. Flip Gordon for the ROH Television Championship on April 14
- The Briscoes vs. the Young Bucks for the ROH Tag Team Championship on April 14
- Cody, Marty Scurll, and Hangman Page vs. SoCal Uncensored in a non-title match on April 14
- Dalton Castle and the Boys vs. The Kingdom on April 14
- The Hung Bucks and Flip Gordon vs. SoCal Uncensored and Shane Taylor on April 15

Smackdown drew 2.95 million viewers Tuesday night, a boost of 485,000 from the previous week.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It's almost all due to it being much easier to watch things digitally. DVD sales are slowing down these days.

2. Whereas now WWE has its own music label, back then they released the album through someone else, so they don't have the rights to those songs.

3. I assume it will be handled like any other overseas PPV.

4. WWE had him as a wrestler for 22 years. They got plenty out of him!

5. WE'RE NOT CANCELING WRESTLEMANIA DUE TO RAIN I'M VINCE MCMAHON DAMMIT. Unless the government or venue make that call for them, they're going to do whatever they can to make sure it goes on as planned.

More wrestling tomorrow.
