Impact channel expanding, assorted wrestling press, former Impact name facing charges, coronavirus-related wrestling updates, new Slammiversary match, Interview with Reigns, Ricochet special coming, wrestling book notes, Guevara-AEW update, and Questions on Low Ki's COVID tweet, USA and FOX's reactions to taped WWE shows, Elgin-Impact, and Tessa's exit

Impact's Pluto TV channel is expanding into Latin America, including exclusive Spanish content. That's good for their growth south of the U.S.

New Day's latest podcast features celebrity barber Big Jay.

Rhaka Khan is facing multiple court dates in August for charges of interference with child custody, facilitating aggravated kidnapping, and interfering in public duties. The first charge is a felony, so she could be in for jail time.

Kevin Owens discussed his grandfather-in-law passing due to COVID-19. Very sad to see that.

Todd Pettengill has shut down his daily show due to someone on the show coming into contact with someone who has COVID-19.

Slammiversary has added a Knockouts gauntlet match to declare the next number one contender. Taya Valkyrie, Rosemary, Kimber Lee, Neveah, Susie, Kiera Kogan, Tasha Steelz, Havok, Kylie Rae, and Alisha Edwards are all advertised.

Roman Reigns spoke to an Indian news outlet. I'm ready to see him wrestle again, but obviously his family takes precedent.

Batista and Titus O'Neil joined UNICEF on Amazon.

Ricochet is getting a WWE 365 airing Sunday.

Ember Moon will be the subject of a Stonecutter Media PPV in August featuring her matches from CZW and WSU.

The Bella Twins' memoir will come out in paperback in January. Jim Ross' second autobiography will come out in paperback in May.

WWE Studios' Rumble will have an official novelization.

Sammy Guevara will return to AEW once his suspension ends. There was speculation he would be out of the company. I'm glad to see that. He has owned up to his appalling choice of words.

NJPW returning got press in India.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I will keep this wrestling-related. I have often enjoyed Low Ki's work, but can see how he holds himself much higher than others do and absolutely believe that has cost him opportunities in the business. He doesn't seem to mind that, though, so more power to him.

2. I believe FOX and USA have given WWE leeway to not have fresh content due to the extraordinary nature of the pandemic.

3. My interpretation was Impact was acknowledging they had content of him taped for future episodes leading into Slammiversary, and that content will not air. Impact will not be using him in the future.

4. I would think Impact could sue, since it's their championship. I wouldn't think it would come to that. I absolutely think it would further harm her reputation if she took that route.

5. The Austin Aries situation was apparently a worked shoot to theoretically build to a comeback. I guess most talents feel they're valuable enough to pull that kind of stunt, feeling the company needs them more than they need the company. I guess it's a little like someone saying they're too good to work at Walmart and cutting a promo on their boss on the way out.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 6/29/20

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Cena anniversary, Henry book news, new NXT matches, Tessa update, Road Dogg's mother passes, Bret Hart launches series, Interview with WWE exec+Charlotte, Australian show postponed, musical press, and Questions on WWE vs. AEW at handling COVID

John Cena celebrated 18 years since his WWE debut.

Mark Henry is working on an autobiography. That could really be great.

Great American Bash this week has added Timothy Thatcher vs. Oney Lorcan. I'm all for that one.

- The show's women's fatal four way is now an elimination match.

WWE is recruiting Tessa Blanchard. She could absolutely be a top player in NXT.

Road Dogg and Scott Armstrong's mother passed away Sunday. Their father is still battling bone cancer without chemotherapy. This is a very difficult time for them, and I wish them the best.

Bret Hart has launched a subscription online series. I feel like he could be used in an important capacity somewhere behind-the-scenes.

WWE EVP John Brody and Charlotte Flair discussed WWE continuing to run shows with SportHiatus.

Australia's PCW postponed its return to July 25 due to COVID-19 cases increasing.

"Rockquiem For A Wrestler" got press.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. That would be a tough argument to make given what we know now with positive cases.

2. Either he isn't taking the pandemic as seriously as others would like, or he doesn't want to deal with the time/resources/expenses of full-on testing. Vince wants the show to go on his way pretty much no matter what, dammit.

3. As far as COVID preparedness goes, sure. Ultimately WWE is still seen as the place to get the most exposure and make the most money, but I expect this situation is helping AEW look as an attractive alternative.

4. I don't blame him for doing what he's doing.

Nothing to add to 5.

More wrestling tomorrow.

WWE-FS1 updates, more on Tessa-Impact, Cauliflower Alley Club convention plan, Eric Angle sentenced, Owens speaking date moves, Dream hospitalized, Interviews with Joe+Xavier+D-Von/Undertaker, new NXT match, WWE taping plans, Smackdown segment rescheduled, Road To returning, and Questions on WWE changing COVID, and Bret in the nWo

Backstage ending was not a result of COVID-19. FOX felt the audience level wasn't worth the expenses involved. There's a possibility a few episodes happen as specials.

- FS1 will continue airing other WWE content such as past PPVs.

Tessa Blanchard didn't come to Impact due to feeling she might have difficulty returning to Mexico, where she lives with her fiance.

Vampiro will host an El Rey Network talk show beginning July 9.

The Cauliflower Alley Club is scheduled for a convention from September 21 to September 23. Honorees include Rob Van Dam, Road Warriors, Greg Oliver, Dominic DeNucci, Brian Pillman, Jr., Ricky Santana, Jazz, and Herb Simmons.

- Greg Oliver has indicated he doesn't expect to attend due to COVID-19 concerns. Oliver is from Canada and the convention is in Nevada.

Eric Angle got probation and fines due to being part of a steroid ring.

Kevin Owens' Scotland speaking event has been moved to November 5.

Velveteen Dream was recently hospitalized after being involved in a car accident.

Booker T. spoke to Samoa Joe, Xavier Woods, and D-Von Dudley in Texas.

The Undertaker spoke to Sam Roberts about Hell in a Cell, bad opponents, and more.

Smackdown drew 2.17 million viewers this week for a show featuring WrestleMania's Boneyard match.

Great American Bash this week has added Io Shirai vs. Sasha Banks in a non-title match.

WWE's taping plans this week are:
- Wednesday, July 1: Great American Bash (both weeks)
- Thursday, July 2: Smackdown and 205 Live for July 3 and July 10
- Friday, July 3: Raw and Main Event for July 6 and July 13

Smackdown this week will feature Sheamus' toast to Jeff Hardy that was scheduled for June 26.

Fyter Fest will have a "Road To" YouTube series.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I imagine they were aware of the criticism they were getting.

Nothing to add to 2, 3, 5, or 6.

4. There's no way an nWo with Bret Hart in the Hogan role would have been nearly as successful. Hollywood Hogan was much more charismatic and interesting than Bret, with the shocking heel turn making a huge splash. I don't know if there would have been as much of a push for an Attitude Era if WCW wasn't as successful with the nWo and the direction it represented, though I do think WWF would have still needed to get behind younger, fresher talent and would have still won the war.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Saturday, June 27, 2020

All Japan talent having DDT run, WWE changes stockholder meeting, coronavirus-related wrestling updates, Interview with Gulak, Vickie book coming, assorted wrestling press, Impact releases top name, WWE releases NXT UK names, Dark lineup, Raw segments set, UK wrestling scene takes a hit, more Speaking Out effects, new Extreme Rules matches added, and a Question on Shane's behind-the-scenes status

All Japan's Jun Akiyama will wrestle for DDT for the remainder of the year as part of an agreement between the two sides. He is still part of All Japan.

WWE has changed its stockholders meeting to a virtual session set for July 16. This comes after multiple postponements with the hope of having a physical meeting.

Adam Pearce thanked those who reached out after his COVID-19 diagnosis.

Drew Gulak spoke to Newsweek ahead of his scheduled Intercontinental Championship match. He really did well with that appearance.

Vickie Guerrero announced working on an autobiography.

WWE saw more positive COVID-19 test results Friday.

- Jamie Noble confirmed he was among those diagnosed. I wish him the best as he recovers.

The Undertaker and Triple H were namedropped on "The Daily Show" Thursday.

Jim Cornette and Bobby Fulton are doing a GoFundMe for Southern Ohio Survivors.

Smackdown was changed drastically due to extensive COVID-19 testing and waiting for tests to come back negative.

Michael Elgin has been removed from Impact Wrestling as a result of the Speaking Out movement. No taped content featuring him will air, and he no longer has merchandise for sale. Elgin is a very talented individual with star power, but wrestling locker rooms shouldn't be a haven for predators.

- Elgin deleted his social media accounts after this announcement. His post-release statement was reported.

- Elgin also had a backstage fight with Sami Callihan at a recent taping regarding a match both of them were in. Scott D'Amore broke the fight up.

WWE Playback has been added to WWE Network.

Nancy Benoit shirts have been added to Pro Wrestling Tees as a collaboration with Dark Side of the Ring and Nancy's family.

WWE has released Ligero and Travis Banks as a result of the Speaking Out movement. There was no public announcement of these releases, but both men have been removed from the WWE website.

WWE did not tape Raw on Friday as intended. The taping was moved to Saturday.

Dark has announced:
- Young Bucks vs. Brandon Cutler and Peter Avalon
- Lance Archer vs. Pineapple Pete
- Brandi Rhodes and Allie vs. KiLynn King and Skyler Moore
- Scorpio Sky vs. Brady Pierce
- Ricky Starks vs. Griff Garrison
- The Butcher & The Blade vs. Low Rida and Fuego del Sol
- Shawn Spears vs. Max Caster

Raw has added contract signings for Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler and Asuka vs. Sasha Banks.

Multiple UK wrestling promotions are facing difficulties following the losses of multiple talents as a result of the Speaking Out movement, compounding issues from COVID-19. There is real concern about the future of the wrestling scene there, including NXT UK.

UK's Equity union has met with several female wrestlers following the Speaking Out movement. It's believed future meetings will include political and legal figures.

Scotland is considering looking at wrestling events and schools in the wake of the Speaking Out movement.

Saraya Knight has said she is done with the wrestling business following allegations in the Speaking Out movement. She has deleted her social media accounts.

Renee Young publicly confirming her COVID-19 diagnosis was not something WWE knew about beforehand. WWE is upset at her disclosure.

Natalya missed this weekend's TV tapings due to having a fever. She has not tested positive for COVID-19.

NXT considered having fans for upcoming tapings should they pass COVID-19 testing, but opted not to.

WWE is getting around New York quarantine requirements by flying talents and personnel to and from Pennsylvania instead. This is punishable by a fine, but it is considered unlikely to be enforced widely enough to be an issue. Frankly that's asinine and I hope the company gets heavy flak for it.

WWE has considered running TV tapings in large venues with socially distanced fans beginning in late July or late August.

Extreme Rules has added:
- Sasha Banks vs. Nikki Cross for the Smackdown Women's Championship
- Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt "at the swamp" in a non-title match.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Probably not, as it wouldn't be the usual experience.

Nothing to add to 2 or 3.

4. I don't believe he's at every taping, but has been known to help out when he is active as a performer.

Nothing to add to 5.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Interviews with Drew/HHH/Deonna, Impact production notes, Impact show status, Slammiversary additions, new podcasts, WWE names reveal COVID diagnoses, COVID precautions, assorted wrestling press, ROH postpones tapings, ROH begins investigations, Dynamite+NXT audiences, another FS1 archived show, WWE PPV gets subtitle, Tessa gone from Impact, and Questions on COVID precautions, WWE doing outdoor shows, and missing HoFers

Drew McIntyre appeared in a BBC Bitesize segment.

Triple H gave a long interview about Undertaker, Vince McMahon, and more.

Impact drastically changed this week due to removing content featuring Joey Ryan and Michael Elgin, using content that was originally set to air in future weeks.

Aftershock will return next week. Impact production staff was understandably occupied this week making changes to the main show.

Slammiversary has added:
- The North vs. Ken Shamrock and a partner for the Tag Team Championship
- Willie Mack vs. Chris Bey for the X-Division Championship

Deonna Purrazzo discussed WWE, Impact, and more. It's not surprising the 26-year-old is keeping her future open.

Austin Aries has announced a new podcast.

Kayla Braxton and Adam Pearce revealed COVID-19 diagnoses on Twitter.

- Braxton has deleted her Twitter account to focus on her health.

Fyter Fest will be live on July 1, with the July 8 episode taped July 2.

Dynamite this week didn't use anyone who had been in contact with QT Marshall.

NXT alum Cezar Bononi attended Dynamite. We'll see if he ends up on Dark.

AEW Unrestricted this week was a Fyter Fest preview show.

ROH has postponed TV taping plans originally set for Maryland in July.

ROH TV this week will focus on Kenny King.

ROH has announced investigations related to the Speaking Out movement.

WWE is mandating COVID-19 testing ahead of this weekend's TV tapings.

Randy Orton is getting a fan-chosen 2004 action figure design.

Dynamite drew 633,000 viewers this week, the lowest audience they've drawn. That's a significant drop from last week's 772,000. I would assume Jon Moxley's absence contributed to that decline, but either way, that's alarming.

NXT drew 786,000 viewers this week. That's quite a good number for them.

Ron Simmons was on Highspots' most recent virtual gimmick table. The July 4 edition will feature Sgt. Slaughter, The Patriot, and Jim Duggan. Nice!

Peyton Royce has launched a YouTube channel

FS1 will show Survivor Series 2018 Tuesday night.

Extreme Rules has been subtitled "The Horror Show." I would think that could tie in to Bray Wyatt vs. Braun Strowman.

Tessa Blanchard has been released from Impact shortly before her contract was set to expire. The two sides were attempting to negotiate for her to wrestle at Slammiversary and drop her championship, with Impact hoping they could count the time she has remained in Mexico and add that to the end of her deal, but they were not able to come to terms.

- There had been friction between Tessa and the company during the pandemic, with Impact not receiving content that was going to be used for a virtual "sit-down" interview segment on June 2's episode. Impact had to re-edit that episode extensively, including new voiceovers to replace content that referenced the interview.

- Tessa has been stripped of the Impact World Championship. It is currently unknown how a new champion will be declared.

-- Impact really invested heavily in Blanchard during her time there. They'll need to really change plans now that she's done.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Let's just say I don't have all the information they have, and I'm not envious of them having to make that call.

2. When did they start? No, they won't have friends and family at upcoming tapings.

3. I don't expect them to do so. A lot of what makes WWE tours go so effectively is the relationships they have in place with buildings across the country. It would take a lot of extra work to do outdoor venues, and potentially alienate those existing relationships.

4 and 5. Definitely due to the lawsuits. Unless Demolition and WWE make up as Warrior and Bruno did, they'll likely stay out of the Hall. We'll see about Bundy.

6. The founders of the company, Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt. Frankly they deserve more than a HoF induction.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Thursday, June 25, 2020

Interviews with Sonya/Priest/Bauer/Moose/Swole, new WWE TV deal, Edge injury update, released name taking hiatus, assorted wrestling press, COVID cases affect WWE and AEW, Alexa getting podcast, CHIKARA shutting down, AEW+NXT matches, and Questions on WWEPC reactions, chokeholds in 2020, Drake's 24/7 antics, Orton vs. Christian, and head scars

Sonya Deville spoke to The Sun.

MLW has signed football player-turned-wrestler Calvin Tankman. Tankman had previously tried out for WWE.

WWE announced an Italian TV deal beginning July 1. The multi-year agreement will feature:
- Raw and Smackdown live streaming on DPlay PLUS, with NXT available on-demand a few hours after its U.S. airing.

- Raw, Smackdown, and NXT in Italian commentary on DMAX. Raw will be a two-hour version.

-- It's notable no WWE TV is airing live on television in the region.

Edge showed his triceps injury

Sarah Logan has announced taking time off from wrestling. She's 26, so she's got ample time to explore.

Damian Priest spoke before NXT. Interesting to see that was really his car that was damaged.

The Bump next week has announced Ricochet, Lana, and Natalya.

Dynamite's lineup was changed due to COVID-19:
- QT Marshall was held off Dynamite this week due to being in contact with someone who had COVID-19.

- Jon Moxley missed Dynamite this week due to being in contact with an individual with COVID-19. AEW is being very proactive with managing the pandemic, an unexpected and major hurdle for the young company.

WWE is facing multiple COVID-19 cases among talent and staff.

- Talents are being asked to isolate ahead of Friday's taping, should it occur as scheduled. WWE is also asking talent to keep management informed of any travel outside the area close to tapings.

- Family and friends will not be allowed in the WWE Performance Center for Friday's scheduled TV taping.

- WWE has announced continuing testing for COVID-19 at TV productions.

Alexa Bliss announced a podcast called Uncool coming to WWE Network. She's a great choice for a host.

Renee Young appeared on "After The Bell" this week. This was taped before Backstage was canceled.

CHIKARA has shut down following accusations of misconduct by owner Mike Quackenbush and trainer Icarus. Quackenbush is also stepping down from Wrestle Factory.

Kimber LeeScott HolladayDanjerhawk and RazerhawkGreen AntJoshua WellsJhammermeierHallowicked, and Frightmare all announced splitting from the promotion.

Elite Canada Championship Wrestling has removed multiple roster members following accusations.

- ECCW co-owner Jeff Duncan has separated from the company.

Edge responded to criticism of his Backlash match. I appreciate the candid defense.

MLW CEO Court Bauer spoke to New York Post about DAZN and more. They've really prioritized content deals, to their benefit.

Moose spoke to The Mirror about TNA returns and more:
- I love his current angle.

- EC3 and Eric Young would both be solid additions to the product.

- Naturally the first thought everyone had with his TNA Title was them being unified. That would be a natural Bound For Glory main event.

- Blunt discussion of intergender wrestling.

- One can certainly argue that Impact isn't prominent enough in 2020 to have a true world title. Certainly if it wasn't for their Spike run and the big names who have been through in the past, more would feel similarly.

Big Swole spoke to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs podcast.

Fyter Fest has announced:
-- On July 1:
- Cody vs. Jake Hager for the TNT Championship
- Kenny Omega and Hangman Page vs. Best Friends for the Tag Team Championship
- Hikaru Shida vs. Penelope Ford for the Women's Championship
- Santana and Ortiz vs. Private Party
- Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy vs. MJF and Wardlow

-- On July 8:
- Jon Moxley vs. Brian Cage for the World Championship
- Chris Jericho vs. Orange Cassidy
- Lance Archer vs. Joey Janela
- Young Bucks and FTR vs. Lucha Bros and The Butcher & The Blade
- Brodie Lee, Colt Cabana, and Stu Grayson vs. SoCal Uncensored
- Nyla Rose in action

NXT has announced the next two weeks' episodes as The Great American Bash. The July 1 episode will feature:
- Candice LeRae vs. Tegan Nox vs. Dakota Kai vs. Mia Yim in a number one contenders' match for the NXT Women's Championship
- Roderick Strong vs. Dexter Lumis in a strap match

The Undertaker responded to Madison Square Garden's tribute.

Renee Young announced testing positive for COVID. That's scary. I wish her and those around her the best.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I haven't seen anything to suggest they're scripted to that degree.

2. Honestly I hadn't thought of that, and I completely understand why that would be uncomfortable to watch. I don't know that WWE will make any changes, however, unless there's a more widespread disapproval of the actions.

3. A lot of Drake's 24/7 shenanigans were his initiative.

4. Christian stood up for someone he's known for decades, even if he was unlikely to succeed. That's grit. And, yes, it was to make Orton look even more despicable.

5. I've actually got to give the edge to Curtis there. Both are scary reminders of the business' less family-friendly, sports entertainment-y aspects.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Charlotte update, assorted wrestling updates, more on Backstage, ROH name re-signs, more on Ryan-Impact, Anthem case update, Impact returning to former home?, MLW show returning, Interviews with Undertaker/Flair, Raw audience, BTE removing old episodes, women's promotion coming, Impact matches set, and Questions on no-compete clauses, WWE shows blending together, and more WWE content during quarantine

Charlotte Flair is taking time off to have surgery. WWE is hopeful she will be back by Summerslam. The plan is for her to resume feuding with Asuka and Nia Jax. I really hope she isn't out long. With Becky and Ronda out, WWE's really missing star power in the women's division.

Adam Cole got a Best Of collection on WWE Network today.

Booker T. discussed Backstage ending. It sounds like it could return digitally. I'm not sure if that would give FOX a big return on their investment.

ROH has signed Bobby Cruise to a new contract.

Joey Ryan's Impact match was going to feature Dez and Wentz as Crazzy Steve's partners.

- #CancelCulture has been removed as a group from Impact's online roster, so that gimmick has been shelved. Rob Van Dam and Jacob Crist remain listed, so they could be repackaged.

Anthem has filed a motion looking to prevent Karen Jarrett from testifying in their lawsuit with Jeff Jarrett.

Impact is listed as airing on Pursuit HD on Friday, July 3, leading to speculation the show will have a replay on their former home.

Impact in 60 next week will focus on Mick Foley. Samoa Joe and Sting matches will be featured.

MLW Underground will re-air beginning July 11 on beIN Sports and other platforms. This was the show from the promotion's original run. Good to see them providing content right now.

The Undertaker responded to #ThankYouTaker trending on Twitter after "The Last Ride" finished airing, as many are speculating WrestleMania 36 was his final match. I'm a little less confident given previous "false finishes" to his career.

- Madison Square Garden paid tribute to Undertaker.

- The Undertaker spoke to Sports Illustrated about his career.

Raw drew 1.92 million viewers this week, close to last week.

Being The Elite is removing past episodes featuring Joey Ryan. His All In segment is going to look really bad in hindsight.

wXw is suspending releases of Shotgun while they edit out content featuring Julian Pace and Jay Skillet following both men being accused during the #SpeakingOut movement.

Ric Flair endorsed Randy Orton in a WrestlingInc interview.

The Bump this week featured Kevin Owens, Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro, Breezango, and Xavier Woods.

Thunder Rosa is launching an all women's promotion. Intriguing idea. I'm curious how it will go.

Slammiversary has added Jordynne Grace vs. Deonna Purrazzo for the Knockouts Championship. They're not wasting any time with her push!

Impact has announced:
- Moose vs. Crazzy Steve for the TNA Championship
- Reno SCUM vs. TJP and Fallah Bahh
- Havok vs. Kiera Hogan

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Some see the 90-day window as preferable to give talents three months of pay while they figure out their next moves. I believe talents can actually waive that period if they're willing to lose the downside guarantee during that time. Few are, given it's harder to have stable income outside the company.

2. Essentially it's the final 90 days of the contract before it terminates. It's the equivalent of being in catering or injured or what have you in that regard.

3. It's difficult enough to get people to watch two or three hours of WWE in a week. Giving them five hours of a product that feels the same is asking a lot, especially with only a fraction of the roster on each show. There's also the argument that if you didn't like a talent on Friday, would moving them to Monday really change your feelings on them if both shows are essentially the same? The counterargument is that both of them are WWE shows. So if you like Coke, you might rather have Diet Coke than Pepsi.

4. No way are they going to make that much more content unless there's a revenue increase along with it. They already have Main Event and 205 Live that not many people watch, on top of their web content. I don't see them doing even more shows at even greater expense just to give people something to do. That's a lot of people who would need to be paid, and in many cases it would further expose people to COVID.

Nothing to add to 5.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 6/23/20

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Joey Ryan blacklisted, assorted wrestling press, Wrestlecon return planned, AEW+Impact suspensions, WWE show done, Interviews with Hammerstone/Bennett, WWE trade, WWE PPV matches, Impact releases, and Questions on vetting stories, Willow in WWE, Edge in Saudi Arabia, COVID leading to fans dropping wrestling, and WWE's first post-COVID pop

Joey Ryan's Bar Wrestling will no longer be running in the Bootleg Theater, as the venue has cut ties with him in the wake of allegations.

- Bar Wrestling has also been removed from Highspots Wrestling Network.

- Impact this week was re-edited to remove Ryan's content.

- Impact has released Ryan, effective immediately.

New Day's latest podcast features Zelina Vega.

The Rock will host Global Citizen's COVID-19 relief event June 27.

Renee Young will host the Reality TV Awards June 24.

Stephanie McMahon and Charlotte Flair will be on Sportsnet's "Top Of Her Game" interview series Sunday.

Wrestlecon will return in 2021, around the site of WrestleMania 37. That's a positive sign after how badly things went for them this year.

Sammy Guevara has been indefinitely suspended without pay following a sexually abusive comment made toward Sasha Banks. Sammy apologized to Sasha publicly and privately, and Banks released a statement on the matter. Sammy made the right move in having a dialogue directly with the person his comment was geared toward. I hope that he grows from this experience and achieves great things as a person and a performer.

- Santana will replace Sammy on Dynamite this week, facing Matt Hardy.

Backstage has been dropped from FS1 as part of cutbacks at the station. This is effective immediately. The channel could bring the show back at some point, but currently it is being shelved entirely.

Being The Elite was delayed this week as a result of the Speaking Out movement.

Alexander Hammerstone spoke to The Wrestling Estate. To answer the question they posed, MLW is expected to leave YouTube now that the better-paying DAZN deal is in place.

Stu Bennett talked about wrestling and acting.

Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode have moved to Raw in exchange for AJ Styles moving to Smackdown.

Extreme Rules has announced:
- Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE Championship
- Asuka vs. Sasha Banks for the Raw Women's Championship

Impact has released Dave Crist as a result of the Speaking Out movement. He had been ostracized from the locker room at the last taping and was widely expected to be gone before the allegations became public. Crist will also not appear on Impact going forward.

Michael Elgin has been suspended by Impact while the company investigates allegations made against him during the Speaking Out movement.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It's absolutely reckless to report any story without proper vetting. As such, I have waited until other credible journalists have given press to any particular accusation.

2. I really don't think so, but I also don't think we've seen him for the last time. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Willow and Itchweeed on BTE or something else AEW-related.

3. It's too early to know anything about Edge's in-ring future. I would be surprised to see that all come together, though. No bumps means no bumps, even in Saudi Arabia.

4. Oh absolutely. Some people will definitely stop being fans permanently.

5. I can definitely see it being at least one McMahon.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 6/22/20

WWE trademarks, another new promotion coming?, Interviews with Sasha/Charlotte/Dustin/Morton, ESPN covers Taker at Mania, MLW cuts ring announcer, WWE charity stream, and Questions on Alicia, Impact cameos, Total Divas, KISS in CMLL, WWE's props, and HoF decisions

WWE has trademarked Austin Theory and Brendan Vink.

Matt Cardona, formerly Zack Ryder, filed trademarks for "Major Wrestling Federation," which has people speculating he's looking to start a wrestling company. That's going to be a tough sell with so many other promotions competing for talent and attention.

LuFisto has trademarked her ring name.

Sasha Banks spoke to BT Sport: Tweet 1 Tweet 2. Pretty funny.

ESPN spoke to ten of Undertaker's WrestleMania opponents:
- Amazing to hear Ric Flair of all people having doubts.

- Hahaha Jake Roberts focusing on outside the ring endeavors.

- Interesting insight to different Mania matches.

- Haha Shane took as good as he gave.

- Shane taking that table bump was scary but what everyone expected him to do when the match was announced.

- I can't help but think the End of an Era wasn't really that in hindsight as far as them never working together again.

MLW has released its ring announcer as the result of the #SpeakingOut movement.

WWE will have a roundtable during Raw with Jeff Jarrett, Jeff Hardy, the Usos, R-Truth, Dana Brooke, and Wesley Blake and more to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Charlotte Flair spoke in the UK.

Dustin Rhodes looked back at working with his dad.

Ricky Morton gave a long interview.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Alicia retired after going through rehab.

Nothing to add to 2.

3. No. They usually work together when Impact's in that area. They're not the only company to do so.

4. Basically because KISS never saw it to sue them!

5. That's pretty cool. Interesting job!

6. Vince makes the final call, but others in the company make suggestions.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Sunday, June 21, 2020

Smackdown audience, WWE sets title match, Interviews with Rhea/HHH, assorted wrestling press, Dark matches announced, ECW alum retires, Dynamite segment set, and Questions on Charlotte being unbeatable, wrestling in the Divas era, NJPW working with Impact, WWE returning with crowds, WWE COVID testing, and WWE letting others into the PC

Friday Night Smackdown drew 2.09 million viewers, a slight boost from last week on the post-Backlash show.

Smackdown has added AJ Styles vs. Drew Gulak for the Intercontinental Championship.

Rhea Ripley spoke to Australia's Wide World of Sports.

NFL's James Conner wants The Rock to play him in a movie. There's a bit of an age difference there...

WWE is holding a roundtable to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during Raw.

The Owen Hart Foundation is releasing more Owen t-shirts through Pro Wrestling Tees.

Giant Baba now has a Pro Wrestling Tees store.

Dark has added:
- Orange Cassidy vs. Peter Avalon
- Shawn Spears vs. Pineapple Pete
- Jurassic Express vs. Luther, Serpentico, and Max Caster
- Lance Archer vs. Griff Garrison
- Mel vs. Kilynn King
- Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss vs. John Silver and Alex Reynolds
- Christopher Daniels and Scorpio Sky vs. Musa and David Ali
- Scorpio Sky vs. Lee Johnson

ECW alum CW Anderson has announced his retirement from wrestling. He was being used in NWA before COVID-19.

Dynamite has added Chris Jericho and Orange Cassidy "facing off" before Fyter Fest. This is a big spotlight for Cassidy.

Triple H spoke about his history with The Undertaker:
- I'd love to see Undertaker involved behind-the-scenes like Hunter is.

- The HHH/Undertaker/Michaels saga was done well.

- Good to see AJ held in such high regard.

- It does have to be a very different feeling to work WrestleMania in a boneyard.

- Good perspective on working with different "versions" of Undertaker.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. It would definitely benefit her to have a rival at her level. I think Shayna Baszler could be that person with Becky out.

2. There were definitely wrestlers who could have done more if there was a bigger focus on women's wrestling then. Of course, WWE mostly hired people who didn't have wrestling backgrounds, so it's a lower percentage than today.

3. It doesn't look to be in the works. NJPW is already working with ROH, and I expect they want to continue doing so based on the plans for Supercard this year. The long-term plan seems to be regularly running the U.S. with no partner promotion.

4. I'd absolutely start with smaller TV tapings rather than trying to have a massive event.

5. Not at all. WWE hasn't been as thorough with actual COVID-19 testing, but they have taken checks of everyone coming into the building.

6. WWE wants bigger, fresh crowds while they're stuck in the Performance Center, and that's much less of a hassle than having the general public attend.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Coronavirus-related wrestling updates, more on Heyman's departure, Christian update, more on AJ's Smackdown move, WWE lawsuit discusses Middle East TV deal, Bushiroad drops kickboxing, assorted wrestling press, WOW canceled, WWE star not allowed to wrestle overseas, ROH setting up TV tapings, ROH contracts update, more on Starks-AEW, EVOLVE's status in question, WWE team dropped from TV, WWEPC incident, WWE pitched Nexus reunion, Broken Skull guest, Interviews with Taker/Graves+Carmella/Darren/Dustin/Barrett, NWA executive resigns, AEW star enters rehab, WWE release, Dory tryout, NJPW debuting web series, and Ric Flair update

Riddick Moss has been missing from WWE TV due to choosing to take precautions during the pandemic.

Kevin Owens is expected to return at WWE's June 29 taping.

USA Network was in favor of WWE transitioning to a younger roster under Paul Heyman's guidance, and was disappointed with his removal despite the historical low ratings the show was drawing.

Christian has not been medically cleared to return as an active wrestler. That explains why his Raw match was so quick.

AJ Styles moved to Smackdown following a dispute with Paul Heyman regarding the releases of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Ultimately those releases were a Vince McMahon call and largely dealt with the financial side of keeping them.

NJPW using Tom Lawlor was worked out with MLW. We'll see if anything further develops between the two sides.

WWE's lawsuit filed by stockholders regarding being misled over a Middle Eastern TV deal includes statements from a confidential witness claiming to be involved with negotiations on behalf of the TV station:
- This witness alleges WWE grossly overestimated its potential audience in the region and that the two sides were very far apart in negotiations.

- Allegations also hold that WWE misled investors about their previous TV deal in the region ending, which was a result of that station no longer broadcasting sports in the region.

Dragon Gate is returning to having crowds on July 4. Multiple dates have been booked in July, with precautions being taken for those who are attending.

Bushiroad has moved its kickboxing promotion to another company due to it being a big money loser. This should lead to Stardom getting more focus from its owners.

Stardom alum Arisa Hoshiki had fans concerned with a recent tweet. She has faced heavy cyberbullying, to the point of going to police. I hope things improve for her as she continues a life after wrestling.

DDT's June 14 return was a sellout at 82 fans. That's not a typo.

WOW has been canceled by AXS. They had never aired content taped in September. We'll see if the promotion ends up anywhere else.

Owen Hart will be the subject of another documentary, which Martha will executive produce.

Booker T.'s Reality of Wrestling's ring announcer has quit due to alleged bullying over his political beliefs. Neither Booker nor the company have commented on his exit.

Alexander Wolfe was disallowed from appearing at wXw's recent shows by WWE, as he has not been cleared to wrestle in the U.S. wXw is of course based in Germany, where Wolfe lives and is currently stationed.

UK promotion ICW is looking to return July 25 and July 26, while Fight Club Pro is looking to return July 31, August 1, and August 2. More on how that will work as the dates approach.

ROH is looking to run TV tapings in July in order to fill two months' worth of episodes. It doesn't look like any Honorclub shows are in the works at this time.

ROH is currently on a hiring freeze, even with talents having deals expire during the pandemic. We'll see if other companies take advantage of that.

AEW signing Ricky Starks was a result of his match with Cody, which was taped last week. It's cool to see talent able to impress and quickly earn a deal.

EVOLVE is likely in the process of shutting down, which would almost definitely mean a WWE sale. The company really took a hit by not running WrestleMania weekend. It's currently unknown what this means for the involved talent, given that EVOLVE's booker works in NXT. Certainly one would think a number of names would get tryouts there.

The Forgotten Sons have been removed from plans after Jaxson Ryker caused a social media controversy. The other members distanced themselves from his comments immediately, but for now the gimmick has been shelved.

WWE had a situation with an individual causing a scene outside the Performance Center Monday that ended before police involvement. This person has had multiple instances of trying to enter the facility in the past including several arrests. Frankly this person is clearly a danger to himself and others and should be in a facility with trained mental health professionals.

WWE pitched a Nexus reunion angle for its ten-year anniversary, but Wade Barrett turned them down and it went nowhere. Darren Young was also contacted, so we'll see if he ends up being used in some other capacity. He would make sense as a veteran working with newer talent in the undercard.

Cain Velasquez has joined Lucha Masks, which is creating licensed PPE masks for the COVID-19 crisis. Great idea for our surreal times.

Mark Henry will be on "Broken Skull Sessions" June 28.

The Undertaker discussed "The Last Ride's" final episode and more. Interesting discussion about going to WCW and protecting characters.

Corey Graves and Carmella discussed their new couple podcast.

Darren Young discussed coming out, the Nexus reunion pitch, and more. We'll see if/when WWE decides to do some LGBTQ+ angles.

David Lagana has resigned as NWA vice president as a result of the #SpeakingOut movement. The company is basically on hold now as a result, given his roles in creative, production, and editing content.

Jimmy Havoc has begun rehabilitation and counseling for substance abuse and other mental health issues. AEW is evaluating his status with the company after an allegation came forth regarding sexual assault.

WWE has released Jack Gallagher following reports of attempted sexual assault.

Dustin Rhodes discussed acting in "Scare Package."

Sting, Butterbean, Lou Ferrigno, Bas Rutten and more appeared on a Rick Bassman streaming project.

ROH's next ROHStrong podcast will feature Serena Deeb. That's cool.

Hana Kimura will be tributed on ROH TV in July with a full episode. I applaud ROH for that.

Dory Funk, Jr. has announced a Fight Camp from August 2 to August 9 open to those inside and outside the ring.

AJ Lee is working on a Dungeons & Dragons comic.

The former Wade Barrett spoke to Bill Apter.

NJPW will debut "Lion's Gate Collision" on NJPW World, featuring the matches just taped in California.

Ric Flair will appear on Raw to declare Randy Orton the greatest wrestler ever. I'm all for that! I wouldn't mind Orton being paired with Charlotte, too.

More wrestling tomorrow.

#SpeakingOut movement brings forth allegations

Be aware that the following links deal with descriptions of abuse, sexual and otherwise.

Fan-chosen action figure coming, Interviews with Spike/Spears/Undertaker/Ziggler/Riddle, WWNLive refund updates, ROH TV spotlight, ROH DVD released, Dynamite+NXT audiences, WrestlePro alaska return set, Raw title match set, and Questions on Billy Gunn's ring name, Starks in AEW, action figure press, WOW's status, and why Jarrett is suing Anthem

The #SpeakingOut controversies will be covered in a separate post.

Johnny Gargano will get a Takeover:Toronto action figure. Honestly the Takeover:New York attire was amazing in its own right.

Spike Dudley spoke to Chris Van Vliet about a variety of topics.

Shawn Spears is on the latest AEW Unrestricted podcast.

WWNLive refunds are currently being processed. That's some really slow service from that ticket group, but with that many cancelations, I could see them being overwhelmed.

Bandido will be the focus of this weekend's ROH TV.

ROH has released another Best of 2019 volume on DVD.

Dynamite drew 772,000 viewers this week, a clear jump from last week.

NXT drew 746,000 viewers this week, a decent jump in its own right. I hope both shows can keep momentum going.

WrestlePro has announced an Alaska event for September 19. Curt Hawkins is advertised along with DDP, Colt Cabana, Orange Cassidy, Joey Janela, and Marko Stunt from AEW. Pat Buck is listed, too, but with his WWE rehiring, that could certainly change things. The event will be live-streamed for free.

The Undertaker spoke to Pat McAfee.

Dolph Ziggler spoke to Alicia Atout.

Matt Riddle spoke on ESPN MMA, discussing Brock Lesnar and more.

Raw has added Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair for the Raw Women's Championship. Naturally that's going to have people speculating a title change is coming.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. The name is clearly a WWE creation. AEW is wise to refer to him as just Billy now.

2. We'll see if any other NWA names try to end up elsewhere with that company on hold. AEW can't take in everyone, of course, but NWA hasn't run a taping since January.

3. I've also got to give credit to the former Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder focusing on their series.

4. It's possible COVID played a role in AXS not wanting to do anything more with it. We'll see if it comes back and if Impact talent will be involved if it does.

5. Jarrett feels the content could have made more than that if not for Anthem's handling of it. As in, much more.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Thursday, June 18, 2020

Impact teases another addition, WWE taping delays, WWE name misses taping, wrestling content updates, WWE COVID concerns, WWE star switches shows(?), Interviews with Orton/Aubrey, Backstage audience, WWE producer rehired, top indie name accused of sexual assault, AEW+NXT matches announced, AEW signings, and Questions on The Bunny, Raw/SD contracts vs. NXT, Shayna burying Becky, Tessa as champion, and pushing more women

Impact's Don Callis teased another ECW name joining the company after Tuesday's show. It's possible this individual is a behind-the-scenes name. For better or worse we've seen more than a few ECW alumni in Impact with Callis in a key role.

WWE's Wednesday taping was delayed as they waited for COVID-19 test results for everyone before they could be allowed to enter the Performance Center.

- Friends and family were again in the audience to add a larger crowd.

- WWE postponed taping the June 26 Smackdown, which will now be taped a few hours before it airs on FOX that night.

- WWE taped next week's Raw as well as matches for Main Event and 205 Live.

- Kevin Owens didn't work the taping, choosing to avoid the site of a recent positive COVID test. I'm sure there are others who have considered doing the same.

R-Truth will host a WWE Network game show starting July 14. "The R-Truth Game Show" will be done through videos rather than in-studio.

Eddie Guerrero has a limited edition collector's T-shirt box. I'm curious if this is a cleaning out storage thing.

AJ Styles will be on "The Last Ride" post-mortem this week.

"The Bump" next week will have Breezango, Xavier Woods, and Cesaro.

WWE performers are concerned about COVID-19 rates among Orlando airport workers given how many talents fly into Florida for tapings. The company is going to need to be very vigilant going forward.

Mustafa Ali will compete on Raw Monday. He is still listed as part of Smackdown, where he last wrestled in February. His last televised match was in December. I hope he's able to build momentum on Mondays.

Randy Orton discussed Tommaso Ciampa and more. He sounds like the practical veteran here. I wish it was less of a contrarian opinion to want NXT to be a temporary destination for these names.

Chris Jericho's latest podcast features referee Aubrey Edwards.

Backstage drew 175,000 viewers this week, its biggest audience since C.M. Punk's November interview. That's quite impressive and makes me think they could have Bret Hart rotate on the panel like Punk does.

The Miz's "Cannonball" debuts July 9.

WWE has rehired Pat Buck as a producer as of this week's TV tapings. Another company was interested in using him in a similar role, but obviously that won't happen now.

David Starr has been accused of sexual assault by a former girlfriend, along with other abusive behavior. Starr has since deleted his Twitter account, but his relevant tweets and hers are available in news articles like this one. More on this tomorrow.

Dark has announced Brian Cage vs. Robert Anthony. AEW has really shown willingness to put top names on that show.

Fyter Fest has announced:
- Hikaru Shida vs. Penelope Ford for the Women's Championship
- Chris Jericho vs. Orange Cassidy

Dynamite has announced:
- Jon Moxley in action with Taz on commentary
- FTR vs. the Natural Nightmares
- Sammy Guevara vs. Matt Hardy, with Sammy being able to choose which version of Matt he faces
- Wardlow vs. Luchasaurus in a lumberjack match
- Brodie Lee and Colt Cabana vs. Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss

AEW has announced the signings of Ricky Starks and Abadon, both of whom competed on Dynamite. Starks was part of NWA, who haven't run a show since January. Glad to see him have this opportunity.

NXT has announced:
- Keith Lee vs. Finn Balor vs. Johnny Gargano for the North American Championship
- Karrion Kross vs. Bronson Reed
- Damien Priest vs. Cameron Grimes

NXT's July 8 episode will feature Adam Cole vs. the North American Champion in a title vs. title match. If NXT can't pull a big number with a match that significant, they need to make some changes.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Apparently this is something that's been building on Dark. It would benefit AEW to have explained that better rather than assuming fans watched their YouTube show. Naturally AEW attracts a very "connected" audience who follows online reporting, but that shouldn't be taken for granted when it comes to things like this.

2. Raw and Smackdown contracts have higher downside guarantees than NXT contracts, as well as a higher pay day for each show worked, with live event revenue factored in, too. So, while Finn is still under a Raw/Smackdown style deal, if he works fewer dates in front of smaller crowds, that will affect his pay. Obviously that part of things isn't really a concern right now with no crowds, but usually it would make a notable impact.

3. If Becky doesn't come back it's all the more reason to build other heels and babyfaces! It makes sense for Shayna to knock her rival like that.

4.a. She has a physicality about her that gives her credibility, and Impact gave her ample opportunities to work with men on the way to winning the title. It definitely wasn't a spur of the moment decision, but obviously it was something out of the ordinary that could attract the curious.

4.b. It would have to be the right woman. I would think, size-wise, Nia Jax, Tamina, and Nyla Rose would be credible enough, but I don't think intergender wrestling is something WWE in particular wants to do.

5. Basically the women they have now are better trained and bigger stars than a lot of the names ten years ago were, and WWE is looking to have more women watch the product.

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT Reax - 6/17/20

Read on for my thoughts on last night's NXT.

Wednesday, June 17, 2020

WWE COVID testing, Raw and Impact previews, Interviews with Dinsmore/Stephanie/Shotzi/McIntyre/Ric, WWE content updates, wrestling venue closing doors, NJPW and Stardom dates set, WWE responds to allegations, Raw audience, Rock show debut set, XFL collapse covered, new Dynamite match, AEW injury, and Questions on Vince firing Heyman, Tully-Spears, ironclad contracts, WWE moving to Florida, and NXT copying Dark Order

WWE canceled Tuesday's TV taping after the recent positive COVID-19 test. They were scheduled to tape next week's Raw and Smackdown.

- WWE talent and staff underwent COVID-19 testing Tuesday. As you might expect, WWE talent are concerned about their health. This has been exacerbated by WWE allowing additional friends and family into the audience Monday. WWE tested these individuals' temperatures before they participated, but they did not wear masks.

- WWE names were also frustrated at the lack of communication from management Monday and Tuesday, regarding COVID-19 testing and the additional audience members.

Raw has announced:
- Street Profits vs. Viking Raiders for the Raw Tag Team Championship
- Sasha Banks and Bayley vs. IIconics for the Women's Tag Team Championship
- Rey Mysterio appearing

Nick Dinsmore discussed WWE developmental on VOC Nation's "In The Room." Here are highlights. The facilities have definitely been greatly upgraded under Triple H's watch.

Stephanie McMahon appeared on Variety to discuss the future of sports and live events.

"The Big Show Show" will air another episode in August. Netflix filmed 11 episodes but has only released ten.

FS1 will air Survivor Series 2018 on June 30.

WWE taped Main Event for this week on Monday as well.

New York's Nassau Coliseum is closing while its owners seek investors for the massive amount of loans on the property. WWE has run there many times over the decades.

NJPW has announced events for July 20, July 25, July 27, and July 31. These are all currently scheduled to allow fans to attend.

ROH is doing a Best in the World compilation PPV in the timeslot this year's show was scheduled for. That's clever!

WWE responded to false reports fans attended Monday's TV taping. I hope this leads to fewer rumors being reported as reality and more skepticism regarding certain reporters.

Raw drew 1.93 million viewers Monday night, a significant boost from past weeks. This episode followed Backlash, featured followup from Edge being injured, and was the first show since Paul Heyman's dismissal, so there were reasons for curious casual fans to watch.

"Young Rock" is set for NBC's fall mid-season. The series was ordered for 11 episodes. I'm curious what the show will be like.

WWE responded to allegations regarding their Saudi Arabian relationship. Frankly unless that person recounts that story under oath with cross-examination, I'm not covering it due to its less-than-credible nature.

ESPN covered the XFL's collapse in-depth.

Shotzi Blackheart spoke to Sports Illustrated before NXT. She's definitely getting a big opportunity tonight.

Drew McIntyre spoke to Sports Illustrated about ideal opponents. There's a good variety there. I hope he doesn't get heat for mentioning NJPW names.

Sasha Banks is on the latest "Fridge Tours."

Ric Flair spoke about The Undertaker's in-ring future. Of course Flair isn't one to thank about retirement!

Stardom will return June 21 with a lineup to be announced that day. Glad they're back. They need some good news right now.

Dynamite has added Anna Jay competing tonight.

Mike Chioda will be on "Talk Is Jericho" Friday.

John Skyler suffered multiple ligament tears on Dark. Sad to see that in what was surely a big match for him.

Impact has announced:
- Taya Valkyrie vs. Susie
- Willie Mack and The Deaners vs. Johnny Swinger, Chris Bey, and a partner to be announced
- Cancel Culture vs. Crazzy Steve and two partners to be announced. I wonder if his Menagerie pals are busy?

"Impact in 60" next week will cover Aces and Eights, including Jeff Hardy vs. Bully Ray for the TNA Championship.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Prichard's vision is absolutely more in line with Vince's than Heyman's is. Ultimately Heyman's changes weren't successful enough quickly enough for Vince's liking.

2. It's absolutely a Mulligan reference.

3. That would be a pretty difficult sell, I think. They'd need a lot of leverage to get something like that.

4. Unless there's a really enticing deal to be had with a corporate space, WWE's staying put in Connecticut. They've already got their roots there.

5. No. I don't see the cult aspect Dark Order has, and there aren't nearly as many members.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Impact Wrestling Reax - 6/16/20

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Impact Wrestling.

Tuesday, June 16, 2020

WWE taping update, more on classic Network drop, WWE content updates, Akira's big friend, assorted wrestling press, Impact renews TV deal, Interviews with Dain/Webster, Shane wants Taker again, Jarrett-Anthem court updates, Dark and Smackdown previews, WWE planning live shows, WWE rookie shirts, MLW contract expires, more on MLW working agreements, WWEPC name tests positive for COVID, and Questions on a physical HoF, why WWE has writers, Heyman's best projects, Vince letting talent loose, and AEW without Jericho

WWE taped Raw and Smackdown for this week Monday.

WWE Network's Prime Time Wrestling episode additions span from October 9, 1989 through December 18, 1989.

New Day's podcast this week features WWE trainer Larry Heck and mailbag questions.

Ron Simmons will be on WWE Photo Shoot Friday. This was originally going to air in February.

Akira Tozawa's largest ninja is WWEPC signee Jordan Omogbehin.

Jerry Lawler's court case regarding his son's passing has a jury trial scheduled for May 24, 2021. That's an awful long time to wait for something that important.

ROH is selling their compilation sets buy one, get one free.

ROH's latest ROHStrong podcast features Australia's Slex, Adam Brooks, and Kellyanne.

Impact has renewed its Mexican TV deal.

Killian Dain spoke to Alicia Atout. I've missed him. He's too good to be on the sidelines.

Shane McMahon has challenged The Undertaker to another Hell In A Cell match. That would be a spectacle if both men have it in them.

Jeff Jarrett and Anthem are preparing for a pre-trial conference Friday that will include rulings on the following motions, among others:
- Jarrett doesn't want Anthem to discuss Jeff's conduct while intoxicated, seeing it as irrelevant to the matter at hand. Jarrett's issues with alcohol led to his suspension and ultimate termination from Impact.

- Anthem doesn't want evidence of Anthem Sports' corporate structure and finances, as Anthem Wrestling is a separate part of that umbrella and the two sides don't share assets.

- Anthem says social media chatter from fans asking about the Impact-GFW relationship should be dismissed as hearsay.

-- One document notes GFW content drew less than $10,000 in profit for Anthem.

-- Jeff Jarrett, Ed Nordholm, Scott D'Amore, and Josh Mathews are all scheduled to testify.

-- The trial is set to have nearly ten witnesses and go at least five business days should it not be settled.

AEW Dark has announced:
- Frankie Kazarian and Christopher Daniels vs. Brandon Cutler and Peter Avalon
- Scorpio Sky vs. Robert Anthony
- Stu Grayson and Evil Uno vs. Brady Pierce and John Skyler
- Brandi Rhodes and Allie vs. Kenzie Page and Red Velvet
- Jurassic Express vs. Jon Cruz and Capital Vices
- Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss vs. Shawn Dean and Musa
- Big Swole vs .Dani Jordyn
- Lance Archer vs. David Ali
- Penelope Ford vs. Skyler Moore
- Jimmy Havoc vs. Griff Garrison
- Shawn Spears vs. Lee Johnson

WWE is discussing returning to live events in time for September. Of course, COVID precautions would apply. If safe, that would be a positive move for the company.

The Undertaker has a Best Of collection on WWE Network starting today. They could probably fill a whole day with content under that description.

Jessie Godderz will get an OVW TV special this week. With no new tapings, they're running highlight shows.

NXT UK's Flash Morgan Webster got local press.

IWTV has added UK's Riptide Wrestling.

WWE has released "rookie" shirts for:
- Scott Hall as The Diamond Studd
- The Undertaker as "Mean" Mark Callous
- Triple H as Terra Ryzing
- Edge as Sexton Hardcastle
- Stone Cold as The Ringmaster
- Kane as Dr. Isaac Yankem
-- Huge seal of approval from me.

MLW Anthology will next focus on Steve Corino's Extreme Horsemen. I miss Corino!

- The Von Erichs will likely be featured in a future episode.

MLW has another streaming deal in the works. They continue to make moves.

MLW's Kotto Brazil's deal has expired. He has been written out of storylines.

MLW intends to continue using Pro Wrestling NOAH and Dragon Gate talents when COVID restrictions allow them to do so. There is no deal between MLW and NJPW at this point.

Smackdown has added:
- Firefly Fun House
- MizTV with Mandy Rose
-- I'm a lot more excited about one of those than the other.

A WWE Performance Center trainee has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual was in the crowd June 9 and has not been at the facility sense. WWE promptly tested everyone else at the site. I really, really hope the best moves have been made here. These are unprecedented times for the company and this could quickly get really bad.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I would be surprised if she ever assents to WWE honoring Owen.

2. Vince is the filter for which ideas get approved, and of course puts in his own ideas, but he is way too busy to write that much TV each week by himself. Just like a general can't fight a war by themselves, Vince needs an army to execute his direction.

3. Assuming I can't pick Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey, or Becky Lynch, since they preceded Heyman's promotion, I'd have to say Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre.

4. Either Vince gets too busy with other endeavors or he trusts the talent enough to deliver without his guidance.

5. There's no way AEW would be as successful in the mainstream without Jericho, and honestly it's possible they wouldn't have a weekly TV series without him (instead having your Fyter Fests and such every so often). Jericho would probably have a critically-acclaimed mid-level feud or two in WWE and focus on Fozzy, NJPW, Impact, or other endeavors without AEW.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Raw Reax - 6/15/20

Read on for my thoughts on last night's Raw.

Monday, June 15, 2020

Interviews with McIntyre/Kane/Moxley, NJPW taping notes, AEW injury, Apter discusses Andre, Edge injured, Smackdown segment, WWE PPV official, Punk on Backstage, and Questions on the Sheamus-Jeff angle, not stripping Devlin, and wrestlers who were never world champ

Drew McIntyre spoke before Backlash with TVInsider and The Daily Star. I really hope he's safe post-Heyman.

- Drew mentioned wanting to work with The Undertaker one-on-one. I certainly wouldn't rule it out!

Kane spoke to Sports Illustrated about The Undertaker's Last Ride. Very cool to read about them working together before he was Kane.

NJPW's California taping notes:
- Championship Wrestling From Hollywood's production team handled those duties there.

- Tom Lawlor worked with MLW's approval. He competed against Rocky Romero in one match and Alex Coughlin in another. That could really open doors for MLW.

- ROH taped Brody King vs. Bateman for a future TV episode. Very good synergy.

Kris Statlander tore an ACL during Dynamite and will require surgery. That's a really unfortunate setback for someone who was building a name for herself in AEW.

Bill Apter discussed an Andre the Giant biography.

Jon Moxley is on "A Shot Of Brandi."

Edge tore a triceps at Backlash. That could be a major injury, which is a big blow to his surprise comeback.

AJ Styles will have a championship celebration on Smackdown.

Extreme Rules is set for July 19.

C.M. Punk will be on Backstage tomorrow night, meaning he and Bret Hart will be on the same episode. That's intriguing!

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
Nothing to add to 1.

2. That's a fair point. It wasn't my favorite angle either way.

3. My guess is that it's at least partially because while Devlin can't be at the show due to travel restrictions, Sami is voluntarily missing events. It could also be that the Intercontinental Championship is more prominent than the cruiserweight title.

4. The only name I can really think to add, and I wouldn't put him at the level of the others on the list, was Wade Barrett during the Nexus angle. It's worth noting DiBiase and Hennig have disputed world title reigns.

5 is a repeat.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Backlash Reax

Read on for my thoughts on last night's WWE Network special event.

Sunday, June 14, 2020

Interviews with Nia/Foley/Sonya/McIntyre/Orton/HBK/Undertaker/Jericho/Janela, Backlash hype, Smackdown audience, WWE writer comments on exit, Rhodes responds to Stern, NJPW surprise U.S. taping, and a Question on Vince firing Heyman

Nia Jax spoke about Simone Johnson and more.

Mick Foley talked about The Undertaker continuing his career and more. It's a lot easier for fans to say they'd turn down a big payday when they're not in the shoes of these older wrestlers.

Sonya Deville was on Fox Sports' John Ramos Show.

WWE did another "Dream Match Mania" episode for Backlash. This episode featured The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton vs. Batista, and Sasha Banks vs. Bayley.

Big Show, Mandy Rose, and Adam Cole will be on the Backlash Watch Along. I'm curious if/when we'll see Show in the ring again.

Smackdown drew 2.02 million viewers this week, which is bizarrely being viewed as a strong number driven by AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan. It's still the fourth lowest audience of the FOX era and lower than four of the past five weeks.

Drew McIntyre promoted Backlash.

Randy Orton responded to criticism of his WrestleMania match and more. Frankly generations of fans have been conditioned to think a good match is 25 minutes or more of fast-paced spots, and anything that doesn't fit that is panned.

Shawn Michaels discussed Edge vs. Randy Orton and more. Most matches shouldn't try to be the greatest match ever. Every card needs its up and downs.

Nia Jax spoke to TalkSport about injuries and more:
- Nia in the men's Rumble was definitely a bit unexpected but done well.

- The story was that Dean was going to be punished or buried or whatever by facing Nia on the way out, but it was felt that would only make fans rally behind him more.

The Undertaker spoke to TVInsider about "The Last Ride."

Chris DeJoseph commented on his WWE tenure coming to an end.

Dustin Rhodes responded to Howard Stern not knowing about AEW.

Chris Jericho spoke to WhatCulture. Amazing to hear him admit he'd want Roman in AEW given how much that crowd hates Reigns.

Joey Janela is on the Doughboys podcast.

NJPW taped matches in California with American wrestlers. Former MLW Champion Tom Lawlor joined Jeff Cobb, TJP, Rocky Romero, Mysterioso, and others on the card.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com question:
1. There's a lot to unpack here:
1.a. I really hope he's not implying the business needs another Attitude Era. It could benefit from something that successful, yes, but not recreating a style from 20 years ago. There's a reason music, movies, etc. don't look and sound like they did in 2000.

1.b. It's convenient to not remember Rock had a writer he worked with closely on his promos. Obviously things were a lot more free-flowing then, and I also think it would benefit things if they were more free-flowing now, but making it all about having writers vs. not having them is a gross oversimplification.

1.c. He completely ignored the sixth person in that match, Rikishi.

1.d. I'm on board with the notion that the business needs more dynamic characters who aren't robotic in their delivery. Frankly some of that responsibility needs to be on the trainers and recruiters who are emphasizing athleticism at the expense of larger-than-life personalities.

1.e. Heyman tried pushing Seth as a babyface. The fans turned on Seth, so Heyman went in a different direction. It's insane to ignore why Seth's character changed to what it is now.

1.f. Heyman chose to develop young talent rather than using the likes of Edge, Orton, etc. every week. I understand and appreciate why he did so, but this analysis is really skewed to put all the blame on Vince.

1.g. And who booked the Lana angle, as a somewhat successful way to get eyes on the product? That was all Heyman.

1.h. Heyman was given enough leeway to change the look and feel of Raw. The deck was stacked against him, but it's ludicrous to think he hadn't made changes.

1.i. All this said, I think Paul Heyman was mostly on the mark in putting in place changes that were designed to build things long-term. It took years of declining ratings for Vince to hit the panic button, and it was going to take years to turn things around. I don't expect Prichard will be able to wave a magic wand, either, but it is possible he clashes less with Vince than Heyman did. At the end of the day, Vince is going to put out the show he wants as long as he keeps making a lot of money to do so.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Backlash preview

Read on for my ideas for booking tonight's WWE Network special event.

Saturday, June 13, 2020

"Total Bellas" has been renewed for a sixth season. It will debut in the fall. The series continues to be successful.

Paul Heyman's dismissal was partially a result of Vince McMahon shifting priorities due to COVID-19. While initially he was patient to let new stars develop over a period of over a year, declining ratings and the lack of a live audience to gauge who was and wasn't over frustrated him.

WWEPC coach Kendo Kashin has returned to Pro Wrestling NOAH after being laid off from WWE months back.

NJPW's Tama Tonga revealed he was WWE-bound in 2016 alongside AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows, but the company countered with the Guerrillas of Destiny idea and he ended up staying.

Hana Kimura's passing and its aftermath was featured on NHK, the top network in Japan. Japan is looking at strong legislation regarding cyberbullying and going after those who attacked Hana on social media.

The Owen Hart Foundation will release more merchandise.

New Zealand wrestling is set to return in August.

B. Brian Blair is working on an autobiography.

ROH is looking to do empty arena TV tapings. I'm sure their wrestlers are ready to get back in the ring.

Flip Gordon staying in ROH was partially due to a desire to prove he can make it in the business without The Elite. He was also offered a significant contract.

CMLL considered cutting off relations with NJPW and ROH due to them using Dragon Lee after they stopped using him, but ultimately have not done so.

Billy Gunn is now just using the name Billy due to WWE creating his more famous ring name. I was wondering how that would end up.

Fozzy is set for the KISS cruise from October 29 through November 3. None of those days are a Wednesday so he could easily still work Dynamite.

Dark Order has added Alan Angels as Five.

Howard Stern mentioned AEW on his radio show when the Goldust character was discussed. Stern wondered where Goldust was in 2020, and a staffer passed a note that he was now in AEW. Stern did not know what AEW was and his cohost described it as a backyard wrestling federation. Talk about a burial! AEW is of course much more successful than a backyard wrestling federation, but still remains something of a niche product as far as mainstream attention goes.

WWE asked Zack Ryder if they could use his pool for the recent Otis/Mandy Rose segments. As you might expect, the recently released star wasn't on board with the idea.

Smackdown writer Chris DeJoseph's firing was due to comments made on a conference call that Vince McMahon disapproved of.

Drake Maverick spoke to BT Sport about being rehired and more.

MLW has signed Salina de la Renta to an exclusive deal.

Cody Deaner spoke to Slam Wrestling.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I popped for the email reference. I haven't seen anything about him returning there.

2. I don't see that as something WWE is interested in, as that would surely be a great expense. I don't think a physical Hall of Fame is a big priority for the company right now. They've got AXXESS and that's probably the closest we'll see for a while.

3. WWE isn't interested in offering the level of concessions and money Punk would ask for. I don't expect they're eager to potentially repeat the headaches from last time. Honestly I think the best that can be hoped for is a WWE 2K appearance/Hall of Fame kind of situation with maybe a handful of appearances, and even that seems far off.

4. They could try, but given the current cost-cutting and how the Cain Velazquez deal went, I don't see it happening.

5. She's teased interest over the years, but nothing's ever come of it. It takes a lot to put such a deal together and UFC has been the bigger priority.

More wrestling tomorrow.

NXT drew 673,000 viewers this week, also dropping from last week but not as sharply.

Bret Hart will be on Backstage Tuesday.

MLW Anthology will focus on the Lucha Bros this weekend.

Paul Heyman has been removed as Raw's executive director in response to ratings continuing to struggle. It sounds like he has been completely removed from the creative end of the company, which is obviously a major change for a lot of talents.

- Talent reaction has been largely negative, as many felt he was doing a good job building and showcasing them where others hadn't. I expect we'll see a greater focus on already established acts instead of turning things over to younger and less utilized names as Heyman had made a priority. For better or worse, Raw will be altered in key ways from his approach.

- Bruce Prichard will take over Heyman's responsibilities, consolidating Raw and Smackdown's creative teams into one group. It's telling both Bischoff and Heyman are out of the high profile positions they were named for. Prichard's podcasts will continue.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. My guess is she would be a bit out of place in the Profits/Raiders feud but maybe she'll come back and berate Montez and Angelo for losing focus on wins and losses.

2. I fully expect he'll be able to have a career in wrestling outside of taking bumps if he so desires. I would be surprised to see him completely stay away from the business once he's done wrestling, but I also don't really see him doing something like producing or training full-time.

Nothing to add to 3, 4, or 5.

More wrestling tomorrow.

Thursday, June 11, 2020

Backstage drew 112,000 viewers this week, close to last week.

John Cena donated a million dollars (!!!) to Black Lives Matter. That's MASSIVE.

NJPW has released extensive precautions for resuming shows.

Korakuen Hall will reopen at around 25% capacity initially.

Dustin Rhodes is looking to open a wrestling school. That would be perfect for AEW. He can be a very important part of the company's future.

The Inner Circle discussed Stadium Stampede and more on Talk Is Jericho.

NWA ran a Harley Race documentary.

NXT has announced:
- Imperium vs. Breezango for the Tag Team Championship

Dynamite has announced:
- Kenny Omega and Hangman Page vs. Natural Nightmares for the Tag Team Championship
- Cody defending the TNT Championship
- Young Bucks vs. Superbad Death Squad (Kip Sabian and Jimmy Havoc)
- Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara vs. Best Friends
- Billy Gunn vs. MJF

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. He would have a much more difficult time standing out on Raw and Smackdown. He's a supremely talented athlete, but those shows are loaded right now.

2. Essentially Cole didn't take the matches seriously, which was more or less in line with how the company handled women's matches at the time. These days it would be very out of place because WWE puts a lot more effort into the division.

3. That shot to Flair was STIFF. I don't think anyone's expecting Undertaker to do signings each weekend, but certainly some stars could be part of a mini-AXXESS kind of thing before the event.

Nothing to add to 4. Both companies are taking precautions, and I don't believe cost is a factor.

5. I would recommend this person find more constructive quarantine hobbies.

More wrestling tomorrow.
