Superstars Reax - 5/21/16, WWE and NXT live event notes, CWC finals sell out, Interview with Brennan, new NXT host, WWE star asks for release, Questions on RVD's status, Ciampa in NXT, Trevor Lee's status, Drake Younger the referee, HHH vs. Test, and booking live events

Superstars:
- Titus/Swagger vs. Dallas/Axel:
I really want to see some vignettes with SwaggerGator. Main Event and Superstars would be more fun with some promos added in.

I'm glad everyone here's doing good work despite the lack of a push. I'm sure that's not easy at times.

Fine enough for the time and showcase it had.

- Ryder vs. Stardust:
Will this be the last Stardust match on WWE TV? I hope not.

Fun match so far. Both men do good work.

I pretty much always enjoy the "focus on a body part" style Stardust employs.

They're putting work in for a mostly meaningless match.

Nice ending.

I wish Superstars and Main Event were more like the ECW brand or NXT: Redemption with ongoing angles and feuds. Obviously only diehards are watching at this point, but those shows were pretty good for showcasing talents at this level.

NEWS BEGINS BELOW THIS LINE.

At a WWE live event in New York, The Shining Stars beat Titus O'Neil and Sin Cara. So that's the latest random tag team. Someone called the team the Prime Time Dragons, which is a great unofficial moniker.

At an NXT show in Florida:
- Mojo Rawley lost in a singles match. No Zack Ryder.

- The team of Sawyer Fulton and Alexander Wolfe continues to be a thing. They lost to American Alpha.

The finals for the Cruiserweight Classic have sold out. That last match will air live on WWE Network. It will be interesting to see who will be competing that night.

Rich Brennan discussed his release from WWE. I wonder who WWE expects to do commentary 10 years from now, given their aging announce team.

WWE has announced Austin Romero has been hired as an announcer and host for NXT. He'll be known in WWE as Mike Rome.

Cody Rhodes asked for his release Saturday. More on this tomorrow. Cody and Goldust left Tuesday's Smackdown taping before anything was filmed, which could have been a sign this was coming.

- I've always been impressed with Cody's work ethic, bringing everything he had to all the roles he portrayed. Dashing Cody Rhodes and the masked follow-up to that was one of my favorite wrestling angles ever for his progression as a character. I also appreciated his enthusiasm for the Stardust character, especially during the feud with Stephen Amell. Even when he was stuck in the undercard working Main Event and Superstars, he made sure his efforts really added something to the show. He deserves applause for his years of performances for WWE.

-- Goldust remains with the company, as he worked a live event this weekend.

Kofi Kingston did not compete at a WWE live event this weekend, likely as a result of WWE giving him some time off to be with his newborn son. The Freebird Rule is really coming in handy for New Day in this situation: Xavier and Big E competed without him at ringside.

Patrick Clark teamed with Angelo Dawkins in a loss to TM61 at an NXT live event this weekend. Whether they become a regular teaming going forward/on TV remains to be seen. For now, I'd assume they were just thrown together to give TM61 experience working as a team in NXT.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. Rob was "pushing 40" in 2010. He's 45 now. Unless WWE throws him big money and a big push, he'll probably just stick to popping up here and there when something interests him enough to get in the ring.

2. His deal, like Gargano's, is set up where NXT gets priority but he's able to take other dates when not needed there. He can't sign to TNA or ROH or anything, but he can pick up work on the indies.

3. I haven't seen anything about him being exclusive to TNA, but obviously he's on good terms with them and booked as a regular. He's definitely still able to work PWG. EVOLVE might be trickier since they're looking to focus on talents who can end up in WWE developmental. With Lee holding a title in TNA, he probably doesn't fit that bill.

4. I can't blame him for taking that gig! It's got to be less taxing on his body and he does it well.

5. Test vs. HHH was just part of a bigger DX vs. McMahons feud. They did face off multiple times as part of that angle, in singles and tag matches.

6. Pretty much what was said. The direction is set on the main shows and the live events pretty much go in line with what's been booked on Raw and Smackdown: faces are still faces, heels are still heels, midcarders are still midcarders, etc. Unless someone higher up wants to try something new for a character (heel turn, singles push), live events don't do anything to go against current canon.

More wrestling tomorrow.
