Smackdown thoughts- 3/16/12

Tonight, Christian returns to Smackdown, and he's bringing the Peep Show with him. His special guests will be none other than the two men sponsoring warring factions at WrestleMania, John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long. How will these combustible elements interact 16 nights before their positions are on the line? Plus, Chris Jericho goes one-on-one with Sheamus in a battle of WrestleMania #1 Contenders. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

It really says something when someone will take a sign to an arena for TV saying that they hate you (and you're not a wrestler).

God, I missed Christian.

I wonder what Otunga's clothing budget is.

That kid doing Long's dance better be a .gif now.

I don't remember the last time one person ran both shows.

Of course, Christian's just here to try to scheme his way into one team or the other.

Some have Christian listed as more than a 2-time Champion, given his NWA and (WWE) ECW reigns.

Christian's such a good pompous jerk character.

I hope we do get Daniel Bryan vs. Christian some day.

Sheamus vs. Christian for the World Title in the future makes sense given the rivalry they've had.

Kofi vs. Otunga works for me.

Five people on commentary. Dear God.

Otunga's got a pretty impressive physique.

Speculation time. Ryder's the last guy on Team Teddy and gets the pin.

We just got a World Bodybuilding Federation reference. That just happened.

"On his bicycle"'s the newest Booker-ism I guess.

Good stuff so far with two rising stars.

That was pretty good for what it was.

That was kind of uncomfortable character-wise, which is a testament to how good AJ and Bryan are.

I think Bryan will end up dropping AJ for someone he thinks can get his career further.

Kind of weird that AJ's coming out to something so spunky given her partner being a heel.

If Bryan wins at WrestleMania, I'm going to emulate the YES! thing at school.

"One hit wonder" who held the title for a number of months.

These two don't match up particularly well.

That was kind of sloppy, but maybe that's the point (AJ's frustrated/distracted by Bryan)?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Bryan's celebrating on her behalf.

I do like that Bryan and AJ match their outfits.

Skipping video packages is fun.

I hope Rhodes keeps Big Show's streak alive.

Looks like they're going to test out how good of a worker Rhodes really is.

And the crowd goes... meh...

At least Indian fans are happy with this entrance.

Rhodes should get the win here. It's much easier to rebuild the credibility of the 7' guy.

Poor Rhodes is basically playing the pinball here.

Nice. Rhodes is hopefully on the way to big success.

Nice of the South Americans to name their capitals after their countries.

Good promo by Orton.

Solid promo by Kane as well.

And they say WWE forgets things.

Kane looks like a completely different guy there.

That led to Kane talking about not being a monster. Henry injured him, and he came back as one. He's happy as a monster, so why should he have attacked Henry?

Was that a tease of Kane being about to retire? He is 44 after all, and a lot of those years have been spent taking bumps.

Orton vs. Kane works for me from a story perspective and the perspective of both guys earning spots as top stars at Mania.

A "new contract" for McIntyre hopefully means they're finally going to do something with him again.

Ha. Long can basically make McIntyre his b---- now.

I like Big Show giving his beanie to kids. Legitimate great guy behind-the-scenes.

I don't think I've ever felt this much "go away"/"X-Pac" heat for a wrestler in WWE. At least not for a long time.

So much for McIntyre's career getting back on track.

Big Show has to go and ruin my bad mood by being a bro to fans.

Yeah, don't think Tatsu's winning this one.

I wonder if they have squash in Japan.

And that's that for Tatsu.

Wow. This is pretty heavy stuff.

Jericho/Punk better be continuing past Mania. They deserve a lot more time to tell the story I know they can tell.

Jericho really knows how to get the crowd to do what he wants them to do.

More stuff to skip (since I've already seen it on Raw).

Sheamus is pretty over with the younger crowd it seems. Good to see.

Great stuff so far.

Musical.... chairs? What does that have to do with anything? Booker's like something from a video game with pre-recorded, random lines.

Jericho and Bryan would make an interesting pairing.

Bryan's not the only one liking what he's seeing.

I think Jericho could literally have a good match with a broom, and make the broom a star in the process.

I wonder how Sheamus fits into the "everyone's a Jericho wannabe" theory.

Is Jericho calling spots on-the-fly? A true great can do that.

NICE bulldog counter spot. Jericho vs. Punk could be off-the-charts.

Get that broom warmed up.

Good interplay with Daniel Bryan at ringside. I hope Jericho, Sheamus, and Bryan are more of the focus going forward than Khali, Big Show, and part-timers.

Good selling of Sheamus by Bryan and AJ.

NICE ending to the show to set up Sheamus vs. Bryan more at Mania. And the theoretical short-term guy (Jericho) is in the background instead of front and center.

That's all for Smackdown. I'll be back for coverage on Victory Road tomorrow. Two news posts (Friday and Saturday) are coming next. Thanks for reading and I apologize for being so late.
