Superstars and Smackdown Reax - 5/10/13

Read on for my thoughts on yesterday's Superstars and Smackdown.
Superstars:
DiBiase vs. McGillicutty was a good match that I think could have been a great match if they had more time. Both men showed potential. It's a shame that both of them are relatively bland as characters, because they're doing good things in the ring.

Rhodes vs. Gabriel was pretty solid. You know what makes Gabriel stand out? WWE doesn't put him in matches competing against 2 other guys also doing high-flying stunts in 5-minute clustermesses which are ultimately meaningless. He's not an important part of the show, but he's also not just another faceless "spot monkey" like TNA presents a lot of their X-Division guys.

Smackdown:
VERY good opening segment. I like things more like this and less about silly nicknames. They did a good job  being consistent with Jericho's character while acknowledging his past.

Pretty good little match between Rhodes and Kingston, but will it mean anything in the grand scheme of things? There was no story to set up the match and nothing set up afterward. It was just... there.

Zeb is so great as a heel. His character's pretty refreshing, too, as it pulls from real life.

Pretty crazy segment. I continue to hold that giving away a bunch of ladder shenanigans lessens the need of us to pay to see a bunch of ladder shenanigans. It sets the bar even higher for the PPV when they do all these spots on free TV.

Fine match between the two "indie darlings". I wonder what they'll be like as performers after a few more years working the WWE style?

Fine post-match to continue things. Are we getting The Shield vs Team Hell No at Extreme Rules or not? It's time to pull the trigger.

Mark Henry's a pretty cool character. Just a straight-up mean, nasty monster of a man. He reminds me a bit of Nemesis from Resident Evil.

That was a pretty good promo from Randy. I harp on those Wellness strikes all the time, but he's a really good performer to have around.

Big Show and Tensai fought for the first time in 1999, which I would have seen. Yet another reminder of how old I am. Thanks, WWE. But yeah, "gotta keep Show strong". Honestly, Tensai's not really doing anything so I don't see why he should beat Show when Show's going to be on the PPV.

Nice segment to continue Orton vs. Show. It seems like WWE's in a holding pattern with some talents who "have" to be all over TV (Orton, Show, Sheamus, Henry, Cena). I could use a break from some of those people.

Always fun to see AJ and Kaitlyn play off of each other. They work together pretty well. It's like a running gag to put Khali in segments. I wonder if they'll do anything crazy with Kaitlyn's admirer. Bray Wyatt?

Jericho vs. Ryback was pretty nice. I don't know if was Jericho's call or not, but the fact that Ryback was allowed to look that good against someone of Jericho's caliber (absorbing and dishing out that much offense, and not losing clean by pinfall or submission) is a wonderful change of pace. It usually feels like the already-established guys run roughshod over the newcomers.

More wrestling coming up.
