NXT Thoughts- 1/25/11

Tonight's NXT starts with the Rookies in the ring, which is a rarity. What kind of shenanigans will we have on this week's show? Let's see.

Funny segment with Derrick Bateman cheating last week. Somewhat silly but it's NXT and it fits the characters.

More Pro switching possibilities. I think it's pretty hard to evaluate 4 people in one match, especially when they're all facing each other. I don't think you need to come up with a bunch of Fatal 4 Ways and Battles Royal for this show; it doesn't help the Rookies learn nearly as well as tag matches or 1-on-1 matches.

"Out-think the Fink" is a segment on WWE.com for true WWE trivia diehards. I knew some of these, but didn't do as well as the WWE Hall of Famer. He's been at all 26 WrestleManias, so yeah he's been with WWE for a long time. Also all the Rookies are older than me, so presumably they've watched wrestling longer? I should have known more of these though, because I did see some of them.

I'm thinking this is the only time that we've had a challenge end in a tie that they didn't go to a tie-breaker.

What was the point of Maryse's interaction with the commentators? Unless people can just do whatever on this show, like Pros' open mics during matches. Speaking of which, while Ziggler and R-Truth were somewhat entertaining, the focus should be on the match (filler as it is). Then again, the crowd was kind of dead for parts of it so it probably helped get a reaction.

When one of your challenges is a match involving all the Rookies and you don't do introductions for once, you have a lot of time to kill.

DiBiase finally gets a win, on a show that isn't even on TV in the States and will probably be forgotten soon.

I guess we're supposed to expect a swerve with Brodus winning and switching his Pro.

I also guess that they're just switching Pros so the more important people in WWE storylines (Ziggler and Del Rio) get someone to mentor.

That's a wrap on a somewhat lack-luster NXT (as far as showing what the Rookies can do and seeing the challenges and backstage stuff we see a lot on this show), so here's the "tier list" for this week. Remember that this isn't a ranking.

Top Tier:
Derrick Bateman (Last week: 1)- We didn't get to see much of Bateman at all this week, outside of the goofy segment with Daniel Bryan. But, that was par for the course for him and didn't hurt him, so I don't think he really dropped any tier-wise. I don't think he has the competition "in the bag" by any stretch, so he'll need to show us what he can do next time he gets a chance.

Johnny Curtis (Last week: 2)- Curtis isn't bad but isn't phenomenal. I think he's close to being someone who should be on the main roster, but we need to see more personality in and out of the ring for him to break away in this competition. He also mostly kept this tier because he didn't regress enough to drop tiers.

Middle Tier:
Byron Saxton (Last week: 3)- As with everyone else this week, we didn't get to see much of Saxton. He could soon be in the running for elimination if we don't see something special from him in the weeks to come.

Brodus Clay (Last week: 4)- This week was obviously focused on Brodus Clay. I'm not as fond of Clay as I was in the past after this week, as the "gggyyaaah" sound is getting annoying and he's not really blowing me away on the mic. He needs to sound more confident and more of a threat there for sure. In the ring, he still needs to be quicker. I like wrestlers doing the power game and all, and I like the suplexes, but the death grip finisher's a little hard to believe and it's obvious that he's a step or two slower than he should be. I guess maybe it isn't hidden as well as it is with Kane and Mark Henry. Then again, they don't try for flashy suplexes and the like. Clay's close to dropping down to Bottom Tier and if I had to eliminate someone this week, it'd be him. When there are less competitors in the competition, your weaknesses stand out more.

Those are my thoughts for this week's NXT. Thursday will feature thoughts on Superstars and Impact.
