Raw thoughts- 1/16/12

Last week on Raw, Kane left both John Cena and Zack Ryder incapacitated. The WWE locker room has been put on notice by the hate-filled superstar. Will Ryder be able to compete tonight in his scheduled title defense against Jack Swagger? Also tonight, we continue the journey towards the Royal Rumble, and possibly get more from Chris Jericho. We also have a guest appearance by Perez Hilton in a Divas' match. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

A Brodus Clay sign? I thought the dirt-sheets said that gimmick wouldn't get over!

Mick Foley appearing used to be such a big deal... he might as well be Sgt. Slaughter at this point.

Ooh, good main event.

I'm getting kind of tired of nostalgic roles.

BBBBOOOOOOOO. Come on, now. Foley hasn't been an active wrestler in how many years? He shouldn't be able to just slide in to the Rumble match.

Pheeew. This is going somewhere.

I kind of agree with Ziggler here.

Hahaha.

Foley's 46 and can barely walk sometimes. He's a legend and future Hall of Famer, but this should be a set-up for someone to take that opportunity for him.

Good heeling by Ziggler.

Ooohhh... "glorified stuntman". I wonder what Flair thinks of that line if he watched Raw tonight, too.

Dolph Ziggler's getting better and better. He's not all that far from being WWE Title-ready.

Punk and Foley being friends... I can see it.

Solid promo by Punk as always.

No Foley in the Rumble's fine by me. Hopefully that remains the case. Sorry, Mick. Very talented guy who I loved seeing back in the day, but it's time for the new generation to be featured.

Still confused by the surprise title switch.

But hey, it means we get another Air Boom/Epico and Primo match, so I guess I can live with it if the follow-up's good.

Yeah, that could have gone better. Evan could have still probably hit Air Bourne and won.

So far, so good for the new champs.

I half-expected Brodus to be standing there.

I'm simultaneously mystified and confused by Jericho's character.

1 1/2 years feels like a long time ago.

Nice fire from Ryder and good to see a more serious Eve.

Smart from Swagger working on the injury.

Wow, AJ's getting a big rub. Very glad to see that after her hard work all these years to make it to the main roster.

Great moves by Swagger. That Doctor Bomb should be his finisher.

Damn straight. Impressive win by Swagger. Hopefully this isn't the end of the Ryder Revolution, though.

Ooh... Laurinaitis isn't a popular guy after that one. Good by Eve.

Hahaha. BOO THIS MAN.

Very booable guy.

Yeah, he won't be replacing Justin Roberts any time soon.

Haha, obviously King and Cole don't know who he is by the way they pronounce his name. Not that I blame them.

Someone call Amtrak, because we just had a trainwreck.

Where are the "that was awful" chants? I guess everyone took a bathroom break.

Wow, that's a blast from the past. Ric Flair had a lot more hair! How great was that post-match promo?

Wade Barrett and R-Truth in the same segment. This should be fun.

Barrett can cut great promos.

And R-Truth can cut some fun ones.

Someone at WWE loves Photoshop.

I'm cracking up here. Not sure if that's a good thing as far as pushing wrestling goes.

Miz, R-Truth, Sheamus, and Barrett. Heck yeah. These people need to get pushed ahead of the Foleys and Perezs.

TAG TEEEEAAAAAMMMM MATCH PLAYA!!!!!!

Oh, maybe not.

Lawler and Cole need to talk less about each other and more about the four credible main eventers staking their claim ahead of one of the biggest shows of the year.

These guys can go.

Clever spot with Sheamus almost being eliminated by his own Brogue Kick.

And the ending was good, too.

I'm not so sure about R-Truth headlining Mania, but I have really enjoyed his work the past year or so.

BOOM. Headshot.

I wonder what Little Jimmy says back to R-Truth.

Cena vs. Kane should have been a bigger deal than just being thrown on the card like that. Ugh.

They're not wasting any time putting Swagger in another match after winning the U.S. Title.

I'm hoping Kane interferes so they don't depush the whole U.S. Title division.

Isn't Cena kind of doing to Swagger what Kane did to him? He's beating the crap out of him!

Jesus. Swagger just got steamrolled.

Yeah, this is getting weird.

That voice. What is it coming from?

Decent number of signs for Brodus. As crazy as this gimmick is, that's got to be a blessing.

JTG might need to change his own catchphrase to Are You Serious, Bro with that look on his face.

Well, there's your confirmation of their names.

This... this is actually working, isn't it? Goofy but they all pulled it off pretty well.

Further selling of it being an accident by Show and Bryan possibly manipulating AJ into taking the fall. DAMNED good video package getting over a big moment.

Pretty obvious who the heel is after this promo.

Bryan's getting better on the mic. He's not amazing, and maybe not World Title level yet, but he's coming along.

Nice slimeball remarks by Bryan. He didn't even say he loves her back!

Jericho's coming out before Punk? Crazy stuff.

Jericho's hilariously disingenuous at ringside. God, he's great.

C.M. Punk and Daniel Bryan headlining Raw as the WWE and World Champion. Who would have seen that in their ROH days?

Ziggler almost had another scary miscue there.

Interesting mix of stars here.

OF COURSE ALL THOSE NERDS ON TWITTER ARE TALKING ABOUT DANIEL BRYAN. HE'S A LOSER LIKE THEY ARE.

Jeritroll incoming.

Ah, not yet.

I love Jericho.

At least he's not crying this time. Still shifting into Maximum Overtroll.

Well, that was going pretty well until Foley came in. Bryan was hurt, so him not being 100% against Henry makes sense.

Very good work by Ziggler. I guess people will stay tuned to these matches with someone like Foley involved.

Oh God, that really happened, didn't it? At least Otunga can say it was after a long match against the WWE Champion and World Champion that did him in against the older guy who can't go like he used to.

Not much of the audience gets these references, but Punk's ripping him up here.

Wow. Great, inspired promo by the Champ. Why did it take so long for him to get the freedom to do that?

Laurinaitis vs. Foley probably has more heat right now than Daniel Bryan as World Champion.

He'd yell himself hoarse if he didn't already sound like he was.

I thought he'd fire him, but that works, too. Impressive, unexpected promo from the former Johnny Ace.

All in all, a mostly good show. There are still problems to be addressed on this show and in the company in general, but I can't complain too much this week.

That's all for Raw. I'll be back for NXT on Wednesday, and a news post will be up later tonight. Thanks for reading!
