TNA Genesis preview

Tonight is the first TNA PPV of 2012. Four championships are on the line, and a number of big grudge matches will play out. Read on for how I'd put the card together.

A few disclaimers before I start: This is a theoretical exercise, and there'd probably be a number of things I'd change if it was actually my job to put together such a big card. It's not something I spent hours laboring over and so on. The basic idea here is to build storylines and performers (moreso than "put on a card filled with amazing matches", because I think that only gets you so far). These aren't necessarily in the order that they would be contested in.

For the Knockouts Championship match: Mickie James brings her A game, and has Gail thinking her title's in jeopardy. She informs the referee that she "has something in her eye". As he checks on her (and keeps Mickie from getting to her), Madison Rayne hits Mickie from behind with the Knockouts Title. Gail then casually goes over to pin Mickie with a fairly careless cover. Mickie gets her foot on the rope at 2. Gail's shocked and argues a bit with the referee. Mickie tries to fight back, but is still dazed from being clocked with the title. Gail hits her finisher to retain the title.

A #1 Contenders' match happens on a future episode of Impact Wrestling between Mickie, Traci Brooks, Sarita and Rosita. Madison pulls Mickie off of Sarita to prevent her from winning. Traci then gets the pinfall with... whatever her finisher is. From there we get Madison vs. Mickie and Traci vs. Gail.

Samoa Joe and Magnus put up a fight and almost surprise the champions, but in the end Morgan and Crimson retain. However, they earn enough respect from their competitors that they're granted a rematch at Against All Odds. In the meantime, I'd be looking to rebuild the others in the tag team division as there are some serious gaps now. Jesse Neal's gone and theoretically this breaks up the British Invasion, so we're pretty much left with the inactive MCMG and Mexican America as the other challengers. Yikes. Douglas Williams could theoretically team with Mark Haskins as a tryout version of a new BI for now.

Anyway, moving on: Austin Aries, Kid Kash, and Zema Ion debate amongst themselves over who should bring the pain to Jesse Sorensen. Their egos clash and they end up facing off. Sorensen takes advantage of this and picks his spots wisely (to avoid being thrashed 3 on 1). The commentators put this over as a smart move, since it could be misconstrued as cowardice. Eventually, as Aries and Ion battle on the outside, Sorensen surprises Kash with a roll-up. He escapes with the title while Aries stands in the ring in disbelief. There's now a target on Sorensen's back, and everyone's gunning for him and the gold.

RVD and Gunner go back and forth until RVD misses the leg drop on the guardrail, hurting his leg. Gunner zeroes in on this, attacking with a lot of Flair-inspired tactics until he finally wears RVD out with a Figure 4 leg lock. Flair uses brass knuckles or something to make sure RVD passes out to it if they "need an out to protect RVD". If his ego won't allow such an ending (as some suggest), run an angle where he was "taken out backstage" earlier in the night and give his spot and payday to Garett Bischoff. Flair would distract the referee, and Gunner would take Garett out with brass knuckles.

Devon is a man possessed against D'Angelo Dinero. The latter uses his anger against him, drawing him in then going into the ropes for the referee to separate them and so on. Just as he catches him and starts to do serious damage, his sons come out and make the save for Dinero. He orders them to attack their father, and they do it without hesitation; really tearing into him. Devon's (wife? girlfriend? whoever the woman is who's been at ringside with his sons) comes to the ring crying, begging them to stop. They step back, and she helps Devon to his feet. Then she slaps him across the face, knocking him down again. She leaves with the smiling Dinero.

James Storm brings everything to the table against Kurt Angle, clearly having him against the ropes and desperate. Angle decides that he'd rather be DQ'd than take a Last Call superkick, and kicks Storm low. Sting puts them in a leather strap match next month.

Abyss out-hardcores a shocked Bully Ray. As things look grim, Scott Steiner, Ric Flair, and Gunner run in to assist him. Abyss makes quick work of Flair and puts Steiner down for the count, but the numbers game catches up with him when Gunner blasts him with a pipe. As he gets back up, Gunner and Bully Ray escape. THIS time. Abyss sends them a message by further destroying their teammates.

Bobby Roode pulls out all the stops against Jeff Hardy. He chokes him with one of his armbands or shirt or something, but hides it from the referee. Hardy passes out in the Crippler Canadian Crossface. Ladder match next month in the finale to the feud.

That's how I'd put the show together. I'll be back later tonight to cover what actually happens. Thanks for reading!
