Smackdown thoughts- 1/20/12

Tonight, Smackdown comes to Sin City! Every match type will be determined by a spin of the roulette wheek. What's more, 2 bouts have already been set. Not only will Sheamus square off with Wade Barrett, but Daniel Bryan will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against the World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry. Following the devastating injury to his girlfriend AJ by Big Show, will the American Dragon be 100% mentally? Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Wow. That look by Bryan says more than a lot of words could.

They need to get some new fake crowd noises. They don't sound realistic.

No way is her career over. I'll start a Twitition or something if that really happens.

Bryan's getting better in the mic as a credible bad guy. It's not a quick process.

WWWWHHHHHAAAAAATTTTT???? Bryan's a heel, you idiot! They need to be consistent with Cole.

Ha. I remember that Showgirl match.

I like Cody's remark about saving the Rhodes family.

I didn't recognize Zeke from behind.

Now that's evil.

I think they should film Hornswoggle from above to make him look even shorter.

Oh shi- so much for that match.

Not bad by Gabriel. He sounds more confident now.

The "duck your head for a back body drop, then get knocked in the face" spot needs to be changed up or something. I don't remember the last time it ended successfully.

In the right situations, Gabriel can work well. He's still kind of tentative at places when he can't just do his unique offense, but I think he's going in the right direction.

That top rope splash was pretty cool.

Good little match for what it was. Hopefully in time Gabriel can progress as a performer beyond the moves he does.

World Title Flag match! Come on!

Good segment overall. This story's going well.

Primo and Epico mean "first" and "epic" (thanks Google!). Primo's name's kind of odd since he debuted after Carlito.

I was wondering if I missed a wheel spin.

Booker T. should have a ridiculously cheesy QVC style show on WWE Network.

Nice double-teams.

Why not pin him simultaneously? Arrogance maybe?

That running hip to the face spot was pretty awesome.

Good ending. Primo and Epico look good but the Usos can pin it on Rosa's distraction.

I'm pulling for either Sheamus or Barrett to win the Rumble. MAYBE Dolph Ziggler post-WWE Title match. Jericho would be a waste of a "make someone more important" device, since he's already pretty important.

The Santino moment's a lot funnier in hindsight (since we know now that he didn't really make it to the main event).

I think the Thodore Long/Aksana storyline will end some time around 2039.

Heh. Didn't they just try to sell a PPV with a tables match?

This is about the only guy I'd be amused to see in a dance off (other than maybe Santino or Kaitlyn).

What if this would have ended up a cage match?

That was... really stupid, but kind of entertaining in its own way. Using Cameron and Naomi was kind of cheating, though.

Oh yeah, I remember this guy. He does commentary now.

I didn't think he said funky at first.

Regal's gotten a lot of mileage as the British comic relief.

Brodus attacking Regal was kind of a jerk move. He's doing his best in the ridiculous role.

Great point about Sheamus' history with tables.

Good teases with the table at ringside.

And Barrett taking the table down was also smart. These two get it.

I hope both of these guys gain momentum this year and add to their repertoires. If they do, they could headline Mania against each other at some point.

I thought we were getting an homage to how Sheamus beat Cena to win his first WWE Title for a second there.

Great uses of the tables here.

Good ending to keep both men's momentum going.

And Jinder continues to try to go up the card.

Really? We've NEVER had one on Smackdown?

DiBiase did fairly well in that promo compared to his "rich guy" and "Legacy member" days. He's more natural in this role.

Good unique offense from both men.

Why did it take so long for Hunico to make it to the main roster!?

Good match for what it was. Not a barn-burner, but it wasn't supposed to be.

They really didn't bring up AJ and Kaitlyn's friendship there? That looked like a good opportunity to sell the seriousness of that situation.

You'd think they would use more time to build current stories instead of recapping others.

Oh, Santino...

I don't think anyone likes blindfold matches after the first 2 or 3 times they see them. There's not that much to do with them.

Wait, what? I thought it was pretty standard that everyone was eligible.

That's more of a hood than a blindfold, but it's standard these days.

They've got plenty of Divas they barely use.

Seriously, there are only a couple of things to do in a match like this.

They're doing the best they can with the limitations the gimmick gives them. It's working to get the crowd into it.

Good for what it was. I guess it was kind of a buffer for the seriousness of the main event.

I guess Cole is being consistent with disliking Bryan. They've been so weird about this whole thing that they're not doing Bryan favors as a heel. Unless of course, we're not 100% there in the heel switch over yet.

That's all the set-up we get for Orton being back next week? I'd have liked to get Barrett's reaction. Maybe they should have done things in a different order.

I'm a little surprised that we don't have a lot more bodies at ringside. What they have is sufficient, though.

We see some clapping in the background while boos sound out. Mixed crowd.

Good stuff from Bryan avoiding the lumberjacks.

Way to make Bryan look like a fluke and a loser.

Haha, Barrett. Faces and heels shouldn't be side by side without a good reason, though. I guess it could be argued that both Barrett and Gabriel have reason to dislike Bryan because of their pasts.

I do like Bryan singling out the leg and going full on into Henry.

You're going to get your head kicked in!

Talk about rocks and hard places. How does anyone that size look credible against the World's Strongest Man (who took a number of performers out for months, and some of them- Kozlov and Khali -still haven't been back).

CHAOS!

If Bryan planned all of that to happen, he's one of the smartest men in wrestling history.

Not a bad idea to promote the Rumble match.

By hook or by crook, he's still the World Champion.

I can dig that match.

That's all for Smackdown. I'll be back for Raw on Monday. A news post will be up later in the day. Thanks for reading!
