Smackdown Reax - 11/16/12

Read on for my thoughts on yesterday's Smackdown.
Pretty good opening segment. I like the addition of Wade Barrett to Team Ziggler.

Sandow vs. Kingston was pretty nice. Future of WWE.

Good little Divas match. They're better in the ring than they get credit for.

I like Sheamus waiting for Show.

Cool that Miz beat Del Rio, but of course the spotlight's going to be on Orton.

Fine segment with Sheamus and Show to set up Sunday.

I hope all this isn't a set-up for Orton to be in the spotlight on Sunday. Those Wellness strikes should mean something. Push Miz instead.

Antonio Cesaro just beat Sin Cara!? What happened to the Mexican sensation? I think they should feud.

Show vs. Khali was fine to show that Show is dominant.

Pretty badass ending to set up the match at Survivor Series. I look forward to more.

More wrestling coming up!

  5. I assume you want me to comment on this:

Ryback's still pretty new. It can take years for someone to break out and show the kind of skill Goldberg was showing at his peak.

The fact that people are still chanting Goldberg doesn't make Goldberg better than Ryback. It means he was very successful at doing something similar to Ryback.

Ryback doesn't decide who his opponents are. Management does.

His opponents on the main roster weren't rookies.

Goldberg also went through smaller, lower card guys on his way to the top.

It's valid that Goldberg and Lesnar might be stronger than Ryback. I don't necessarily think that makes them better (though I liked both more than Ryback - just keep in mind that he's still early in his career).

A lot of wrestlers do the same moves over and over and the fans still cheer them. This is nothing new. Goldberg certainly did.

I can see Ryback feeling he's better than Goldberg because Goldberg did want a lot of money.

Ryback didn't decide how he lost. Creative did. Ditto for Goldberg. The business is a work.

All in all, a terrible video from someone who really comes across as a Goldberg mark who thinks the business is real. I almost didn't reply because I assumed it was a joke.

  6. Yeah, I was interested to hear your thoughts on what that guy had to say. It shows how divided and opinionated fans are. I am a bit lukewarm on Ryback as you know, but even I have to admit the fan is a bit eccentric. I am skeptical of Ryback and want to see a bit more from him until I buy into him being a main eventer, but I have to even admit his size and power are remarkable. I think having such a bland gimmick and it getting over with the fans is also something of a positive surprise.

Did you check out the hotel video with Otunga? I forgot to add (glitch in the blog, apparently) that there has been some rumblings of a gimmick change for Otunga? Have you heard about it? I like the lawyer gimmick with it being so natural for him, but I am also a fan of the "A-Lister" gimmick as well, as people know he's got star potential.

It is a shame to see him booked the way he has been, however.

  7. Next time, could you say something in addition to posting a link so it doesn't look like spam? I get that from time to time and don't want your posts confused with it.

Sometimes a simple gimmick is preferable to something overly complex. Think Superman, Captain America, Mario, or Link. There's something to be said for a guy who just powers through people.

I remember Cena attacking Nexus. I haven't heard anything about a gimmick change for Otunga. He was just in a video promoting TLC in the lawyer gimmick, so it would surprise me if they changed that up.

That said, look at what just happened to Miz: because he does a lot of promotional appearances and is in a WWE movie, they turned him face. The same could happen to Otunga as visible as he is.

With some new "shiny toys" reportedly on the way in the form of NXT call-ups and a possible international signing, it's all the more important for him to have people backstage talking him up. Hopefully the fact that they gave another look to Mahal and McIntyre means they're dedicated to rebuilding careers of the people lost in Purgatory.
