Raw thoughts- 7/25/11

Meet the new boss... son-in-law to the old boss. Triple H is now in charge of WWE, and his word is law. How will things change for the company in the post-McMahon era? Also tonight, we crown a new WWE Champion as Rey Mysterio faces The Miz. Plus, Zack Ryder's new T-shirt's on sale! Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

They're crazy to start with this unless it leads to something else later tonight. This is a main event level match, with the WWE Title on the line. I get that they want to crown a new champion ASAP in storyline, but I think it's be better to set up the match a little more first. Promos from Rey and Miz to start off would be great for that.

I swear I saw Titus O'Neil, Aksana and Naomi in the back there. I'd like to see Naomi get a shot on the main roster, then again, they barely do anything with the good Divas the already have.

I can't tell if they're chanting "this is awesome" or "Miz is awful" but I'm leaning towards the latter.

At least the match is getting a good deal of time.

I liked the Skull Crushing Finale counter into the ropes.

Rey Mysterio as WWE Champion!? Surprised to hear that one.

I should have known this was coming... I think they might be doing this too early.

Oh, thank goodness. I want Del Rio to win the title, but 3 title changes in 2 weeks would be ridiculous.

Why, Smurfs movie. Why?

Add Derrick Bateman and Tyler Reks to the "people I'm surprised were backstage" list.

I'm willing to give Mysterio a chance as top dog on Raw. I'm definitely a fan of his, even though I generally advocate giving the younger rising star the title in this kind of situation. I say they do a rematch at Summerslam. Maybe 2 out of 3 falls? Save the matches with Del Rio and possibly Punk for later.

I'm losing track of who's winning titles when.

I like that remix of Dolph's theme. Nice to give him kind of a fresh coat of paint that isn't what they did with his hair.

I wish Lawler would refute Cole's claims instead of just insulting him and bringing up politics. "What do you mean he doesn't have personality? Look at this guy. Look at what he can do in the ring." etc.

Why you gotta remind us of how awesome wrestling characters used to be, WWE? Especially when a good deal of those people either aren't in the company anymore or aren't as awesome.

Die, Keith Stone. Die.

Oh, you and your making it obvious that was an ad.

Not really in the mood for Eve's dancing.

That was... so-so.

Time to speculate on who's returning. It's way too soon for it to be Punk.

If he took over from Vince, why isn't he Chairman like Vince was?

Triple H on Smackdown. Cool.

It's still pretty weird seeing him as a businessman instead of a performer. Though I guess it will be for a while.

They're putting Cena right back in the title picture? Come on, now.

I was half-expecting Colt Cabana to come out.

I wonder how long JR back on commentary will last. The cynical part of me expects Vince to be back before too much longer to undo everything Trips is doing.

Well, that's one way to make it where Cole stays. I don't think JR will go on the road every week for the company again unless something's really changed recently.

I liked Cole's comments trying to get out of his match.

Truth's segment was weird.

But... Morrison was already under contract, wasn't he?

I wish he would have signed him back "effective next week" or "effective Summerslam" to build up for the return and make it a big deal. Show some videos and interviews of why the feud matters, etc..

OH MY GOD, that's hilarious.

Well, hey, at least Ryder gets to be on Raw (and show off his new T-shirt!).

Squash match! I wish they'd give the fans who aren't familiar with the web show reasons to cheer for Ryder. To the average viewer, he's appeared only a handful of times this year in various roles that have basically been cameos.

Those tattoos are hilarious on Cole.

I can't off the top of my head think of a time where there have been two WWE title matches in one night. I know there've sort of been two times the titles changed hands more than once in the same night (via a reversed decision), but nothing else immediately comes to mind.

Oh how I missed JR's commentary. I think Smackdown needed it more, though.

That victory roll was pretty awesome.

I think Kofi's getting closer and closer to being able to make that jump to main eventer. There's still work to be done for him to be at the level of a Mysterio or Cena, but I think he's definitely improving and becoming more credible.

Cena does "deserve" a rematch, and I suppose they didn't want to go with Cena-Miz again so soon. I kind of wish he would say that he wants to earn his way back up the ranks. Do something different with the guy. I wouldn't put him on Superstars or anything, but I'd like for him to get some new opponents. Compete with some of the lower card guys so that they become more visible and we get some time off from Cena in the main event. I'm not saying he should be taken to the limit by Primo or anything, not should he run through him in a minute. Just him "getting his head back in the game" after having such a long run on top and being pretty much guaranteed as a title contender. I'm not a Cena-hater; I just want to see things shaken up.

I liked Miz's promo. He's becoming more credible as a main eventer. I think he'll stick around there a while.

Another brand-ignoring Diva clustermess next week, but at least it makes the Diva's Title theoretically important. I put the over-under at 3 minutes, 30 seconds.

Please let Rey win this one. A 2 hour title reign would be embarrassing.

They can't mention his name, but they can sure talk about him a lot.

That clothesline spot outside the ring was pretty awesome.

This is a heck of a match.

That STF spot!

Cena doesn't tap out to anything. It'd be somewhat funny if he got beat by a Kryptonite Krunch.

The crowd's on fire here, and for good reason.

BOO. Come on now. 8 days without the title? Part of what made this angle a game-changer was him not being champion for once. Pretty awesome match and all, but this felt short-sighted.

The hell? I thought the show had ended early or something and someone played part of the next show.

I love that song. Pretty fitting for Punk, and has a lot of oomph to it. I wish they'd have saved this for at least a couple of months from now, but maybe this is related to Punk's status in the company somehow.

All in all, I'm kind of in the middle of the road on this. We'll see where it goes from here. It's mainly a case of it being rushed, not the storyline itself.

Well, that's all for another big Raw. I'll be back tomorrow for NXT. A news post will be up later as well. Thanks for reading!
