Smackdown thoughts- 7/15/11

Tonight's the final Smackdown before Money In The Bank, and the World Heavyweight Champion has his work cut out for him. Randy Orton takes on Kane in tonight's main event. There's plenty more going down tonight as well. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens!
Weird seeing Undertaker in the opening when we haven't seen him since WrestleMania, and a lot of his appearances before then were on Raw.

I figured Zeke vs. DiBiase would be saved for Sunday. Maybe we get something that leads to a rematch then.

I have no idea why someone would cook a pot of neckbone.

I like Christian's picture.

They could have done a good deal more to explain who Orton's dad was. Good promo, though.

Eden's voice is getting pretty grating. I think I'd actually prefer Christy Hemme.

Fine match, though I think it should have led to a rematch at MITB.

Cool package for Sheamus vs. Sin Cara.

I like the idea of the MITB participants facing off in singles matches.

I like them focusing on Bryan's facial expressions before the match. It helps us connect with the performers.

Oh, heel Cole... I wonder if this is leading to a match with Booker.

I had forgotten Booker's MITB appearance.

About Booker's World Title reigns: he was a 5-time WCW Champion, and made a good deal of references to that in his early WWE career post-WCW. He then became World Champion in WWE, but wasn't using any catchphrase like that at the time.

Alabamaslam! Awesome. For those who didn't see it/don't remember, that was the finisher of a former tag partner of Rhodes', Hardcore Holly.

That Labell Lock in the ropes spot was pretty awesome.

That was a pretty solid match. Bryan's continuing to impress in using the WWE style.

Is Teddy Long's gambling any sort of storyline or just something for him to talk about?

I like that we won't see show and Henry physically interact tonight. Save that for the PPV.

Kind of funny that Sunday's PPV is being sold on the typically high-flying high-speed MITB matches AND the massive collision of two giants, whose match will be pretty much the opposite of those bouts.

That was kind of cool with Christian.

Barrett on commentary brought back memories of the few FCW matches I've caught on YouTube.

More displays of emotion from Sin Cara. Those weren't as important in Mexico, so he's had to work on them.

Sheamus looks hilarious under that lighting.

Too many people on commentary in this match.

It's really time to put Sheamus back in the World Title picture.

That was a cool little match. I'm a bit surprised that Cara won, but it was a surprise victory somewhat caused by Sheamus' taunting, so it's not as huge of an upset.

I think Barrett needs new music. That doesn't really fit the British aristocrat.

Orton just leaves his wallet lying around? You'd think he'd have learned after South Africa.

What a coincidence that the Rock/Cena stuff went down online just before those packages go on sale!

I'd much rather play that Resident Evil game than watch the Smurfs movie. That movie looks HORRIBLE.

Show and Henry look to be in pretty good condition for two guys who went through a table (or whatever that was) earlier in the week.

Nice segment. I think they can build to a big street fight or something between these two.

Divas match time.

Wow, really? I was expecting AJ or Kaitlyn. I had half forgotten that Kelly could appear on either show as champion.

Yeah, that wasn't a good match. Alicia just kind of standing there at ringside after it was kind of lame, too.

I can't be the only one who looked up Rosa Mendes' nationality after hearing that commentary. She was born in Canada, and is of half-Czech descent, despite being billed as from Costa Rica. She is half-Costa Rican, though, so I wasn't totally fooled.

Cole actually is on Twitter, but doesn't use it anymore.

These Johnny Curtis vignettes get weirder every week. I'm pretty much ready for him to debut in the ring.

Always fun to play "spot the people not with WWE anymore" in those video packages.

Kind of weird that they'd have Christian heel on Orton's movie, considering he's pretty much right on about it not being stellar. I guess it's supposed to be reverse psychology for the Orton fans. The heel says don't watch it, kids!

That's pretty interesting music for Gabriel. It's like they can't decide what music to give people these days. Oh, or maybe it's because they gave it to Slater.

Pretty sudden face turn (?) for Gabriel.

Slater's pretty good with his persona and the like until he speaks. He doesn't sound like a One Man Rock Band in the least.

Gabriel's definitely the one to be face of the two.

There are two up-and-coming wrestlers in the ring, who have a chance to win a shortcut to the most prestigious title on the show in 2 nights, and the commentators are arguing over something completely unrelated.

I think Gabriel has a chance at becoming a popular babyface (at least at the midcard level). His promos still need work and he could still afford to grow in the ring, but the 450 Splash is always good for a reaction as a finisher. Get him better entrance music and more of a character and we might have something here.

Slater on the other hand I'm still not feeling. They were in an odd position once Nexus ran its course. Some of the group still needed some time in FCW (that they would have gotten had they not gone with the Nexus idea), but they were put on the road with the Raw crew. Now that that angle's pretty much over and they have to do things more on their own, we're seeing how they're still rough around the edges. They either need to write them off for a while so they can get more training there, or they need to have them work with the agents to improve before tapings and house shows.

I wonder if this Kane angle is going to lead to him taking time off or something. He's said to be hurting recently.

That "Orton seeing Christian" spot was a bit of a stretch.

Water's pretty serious business in WWE.

Kane's one of few characters who can be consistently neutral in WWE. He'll fight anyone.

Fine angle to end the show.

And that's a wrap for Smackdown. I'll be back for Money In The Bank on Sunday, and a news post will be up later tonight. Thanks for reading!
