WWE live event notes including teased returns and NXT names, assorted WWE press, Interview with Mason Ryan, Nash update, and Questions on replicating ECW, the Styles Clash, NXT names on the pre-show, New Jack, and facing Brock at WM31

Sami Zayn defended the NXT Championship against Adrian Neville in Madison Square Garden. That's pretty cool for them.

Randy Orton returned to the ring this weekend to beat Kane. I'm glad he's back. Talented guy. I wonder what he'll be doing at WM31?

Santino Marella announced at a WWE live event he hopes to be back in a few months. It's possible we haven't seen the last of him in the ring after all!

Everything else from yesterday is after the break.

Orton was announced as injured at the Dec. 27 live event, which would really suck if true. He just came back to the ring!

Update: Orton came back in the main event to do a run-in, so presumably this was just something booked to make that a surprise. Or he's not too hurt to have done that at least.

Tyler Breeze worked a live event this weekend, too. He teamed with Titus O'Neil and Hornswoggle in a loss to Los Matadores and El Torito. Was he just filling in for Slater? Either way, I'm glad he's getting more experience.

Bad News Barrett appeared at a live event this weekend, cutting a promo but not wrestling. I hope he's back soon.

Add Charlotte and Sasha Banks to those working main roster live events this weekend. They were on opposite sides of a Christmas-themed six-Diva tag. I hope they did well. Both have upsides.

Here's a piece putting over Tribute to the Troops. The show pulled in a pretty good number, so I think it will continue.

The former Mason Ryan talked about life after WWE. He was starting to improve on the B and C shows before he was released.

Randy Orton took an RKO for a child's Christmas gift. He no-sold it, though.

Kevin Nash missed an indie date due to a family medical emergency. He was set to appear despite his arrest, but then had to pull out. Mick Foley took his place. Hopefully 2015 will be better for Big Daddy Cool.

For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. I honestly wonder how many fans of the original ECW there are left in 2014, as far as still watching wrestling and would watch the 493rd attempt to revive what made ECW work. As for focusing on in-ring action, that's what quite a few indie promotions are doing right now, to varying success. Can ROH, HOH, DGUSA/EVOLVE, etc. "make it" the way ECW did? Maybe. But I definitely think ECW was the right talents and office personnel at the right point to make a big break from what WWF and WCW were doing. As for "listening to the fans", that's often code for "listening to the vocal minority" or hardcore fans. Indies do that. WWE listens to the fans, but that includes the whole audience. If 80% of the audience wants Cena, Orton, Reigns, and so on, that generally overrides the fans who still refer to NXT talents by their pre-WWE names, read "dirt sheets", and so on.

2. I really hope this person can capitalize and punctuate better than this. As for the Styles Clash, I think it's taken for granted people know how to take it since he's been doing it so long. Obviously not! The people taking the move definitely need to be aware of how to take it.

3. This question's worse than the one above it. It's barely coherent! The pre-show should definitely push the PPV. It makes for a nice way to add a bonus match that didn't make the main show. I would like to see more underutilized names getting screen time on the main shows, though, including some NXT names.

4. I'm the same way with coherent questions. This one was better. It actually has good punctuation and capitalization.

5. I like Ziggler being the one to beat Lesnar. I also don't know if Bryan will be ready to go. If he's not there for the Rumble, I don't think he should headline WM31.

More wrestling tomorrow.
