Smackdown thoughts- 4/8/11

This past Sunday, Edge got past his rival Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII, then did damage to his car. Tonight, we get the fallout of this and the rest of the matches from that night. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Nice choice to start the show. Del Rio not coming out in his car was good, too.

I guess Cole's staying on both brands for now. If there's a rematch with Lawler at Extreme Rules, the announcing situation could change. The only reason I say that is because it would seem like they'd have to separate those two when the feud ended to keep it from going indefinitely. Unless the Raw GM rules that they have to be neutral or something.

We don't get to hear Del Rio angry much, so this was a nice change of pace. He's still a great promo and worthy of main event status.

I wonder if that truck's really from the (WWE Hall of Famers) Brisco Brothers Body Shop. I'm sure that Gerry Brisco appreciated the plug either way.

Edge's promo was nice as well. All in all, a good start to the show and a nice setup to the continuation of the feud.

Hopefully this is where The Corre gets a bit of a revamp after being dominated at Mania and Raw.

Great slow-mo replay.

Seriously, how many times can they remix that song? This version sucks.

Nice match. Certainly a lot better than what we got on Sunday. But, we still got some dominance by Kane and Show at the end. Just think of the rub Ezekiel and Barrett could get if they looked like serious threats to those two. Still, a step up from Sunday.

Nice little match between Rhodes and Barreta. Not a total squash, but established who's more of a priority.

Edge vs. Christian in a ladder match would be awesome. I'm calling a 3-way though, since that match would be face vs. face unless they rush a Christian heel turn. Neither would be advisable from a storyline standpoint. Hopefully Brodus Clay isn't in a ladder match, though. Yikes.

Laycool should be more disappointed coming to the ring.

Maybe this is step one in rebuilding the Divas division.

Nice setup by Mathews on commentary.

I don't really want to see a Laycool split just yet. Unless that means Amazing Kong will come in as a heel instead of them being the focus of that side of the division. That'd be cool.

Talk about your old-school TV references. "Who Shot JR"'s a reference to a cliffhanger on "Dallas" back in 1980.

Thankfully Swagger's getting a rub out of all this to a degree. Swagger could use help getting over and in promos, so Cole being his mouthpiece on commentary's fine by me.

I guess Sin Cara can just show up on any show. Maybe he's not under contract to either brand yet. Though I was kind of hoping it was an impostor (Chavo?) pulling one over on the fans to start a feud with him.

I kind of expected more from him, though. It's like he was just showing off some moves he knows instead of trying to prove something to Swagger.

I wonder what kind of wackiness we'll get in couples' counseling next week. I'm guessing Hornswoggle will do it. Although, of course, it could be a serious segment that means something.

I guess Lawler's going to have to take out Cole for real at Extreme Rules for him to stop with the heel antics on commentary.

Triple threat ladder match please.

It was actually 9 years ago that Edge faced Booker. WCW had just been bought at the time of WrestleMania 17.

I like that Edge is putting over both potential opponents instead of acting like his title defense is no big deal. It makes the match seem all that more important.

In fact, Edge's commentary in general has been great.

Great match and I don't have a problem with the ending. I can survive if they don't put Christian in at some point, though I really think he'd add to the match and has earned the spot. Either way, Del Rio should get the gold there.

That's it for my thoughts on Smackdown. I'll have a news post later tonight.
