Read on for how I'd book tonight's NXT event.
This one's fairly straightforward, especially compared to the clustermess I had planned for Payback. When looking at NXT, I always look at the end goal of the brand: getting people to be successful on the main roster. With that said:
Dana Brooks gets the upset on Charlotte due to Emma's distraction. Charlotte should be close to being called up to the main roster, so the best use of her is to help Dana Brooke get started on her own NXT career. There's not much else for Charlotte to do in "developmental." She needs to be working with people on the main roster soon.
Sasha Banks retains over Becky Lynch. Both of them are really showing potential, and this should be a showcase of that. I think next Sasha needs to work with someone more experienced. My pick is Alicia Fox. It's not like she's really doing anything on the main roster. She could help Sasha get to that next level. Or, bring in an outside veteran to work with the NXT women like they did with Brian Kendrick and Rhyno. Either way, I think working with someone who's made it further in the company would be beneficial.
Speaking of Rhyno, the point of his match should be to get Corbin to the next level. Corbin winning in three minutes doesn't do much for him as far as progressing as a talent. This match should be a test to see how far Corbin has come and how far he can go. Corbin wins after surviving a war. He needs to be seen as someone who can do more than just have squash matches after this. Maybe we get some kind of hardcore rematch at the next tapings?
Enzo and Big Cass win the tag team titles. Blake and Murphy get their rematch, but then it's time to retool them. Hopefully they have a few months off to work on having more personality and charisma and all that other stuff WWE puts a premium on. Having Alexa Bliss in their corner makes them less bland, but they don't feel like a cohesive unit like MNM or The Hardys and Lita. As for the new tag champs, I'd like to see them work with teams we don't already see a lot of. I'm not sure who would be best from the pairings on live events, but someone new should get a chance to show what they can do. Enzo and Cass getting more ring work to improve in that area is good, too.
Tyler Breeze gets the surprise win over Balor. They can easily do Balor vs. Owens again later on, but I think Breeze vs. Owens would be an interesting change of pace. They don't have to turn Breeze face; it's fine to do heel vs. heel this time since the goal is to get both sides further along as performers. It should be an interesting feud.
Obviously I spoiled who I'd book to win the NXT Title match. Zayn probably needs time off to recover, anyway. As he gets close to being back to being "ring ready" following his injury, it's time to start figuring out when to put him on the main roster. He's another guy who's done pretty much all he can do in developmental.
It wouldn't hurt to have a new video about the former Uhaa Nation on the show as well. It's WAY too early to announce anything on the Samoa Joe front.
More wrestling coming up.
