Read on for my thoughts on yesterday's WWE financial releases.
WWE sent out a press release about its success this year:
- The WWE Network is pretty much confirmed as a success at this point. I can't believe people thought it was going to be "the next XFL" and put them out of business. That says a lot about the credibility of the people thinking that.
- Adding more original and live content has been key for the Network. Obviously a lot of money had to go to getting the Network up-and-running before they could spend money on that kind of thing.
- I hope the Network can keep growing now that Mania's over.
- It's good a large portion of people who did the trial ended up becoming full subscribers. But how many dropped the Network after WM31?
- Even more old content being added is great. I'm under the impression a lot of it is still being digitized from the various old media it's on.
- More expansion is great for them!
- I'm glad they're expanding both in the U.S. and beyond. It seems like the Network is reaching the fans who aren't as big fans of what's on Raw every week.
- I'm really surprised at how many people are still buying PPVs at a much higher price than the Network. Is this to be attributed to some people not wanting to migrate to the Digital Age?
- "Total Divas" remains a money-maker and will thus remain a thing.
- DVDs haven't disappeared yet, but presumably they will someday.
- WWE is apparently still slightly below the break-even point for the WWE Network. They'll probably hit that this quarter. I'll be quite surprised if they don't.
Update: WWE also predicts they'll hit that mark this quarter.
Update: WWE held a conference call:
- WWE's future sounds pretty bright with all the new and continuing content.
- Hopefully those other ventures are good for the Network.
- It will be interesting to see if they end up charging more for the Network down the line. It's definitely worth more than $9.99 with the PPVs every month.
- I'll be really interested to see what social media engagement holds for WWE in the future.
- Cable and satellite are still a big deal. If they can make money from making the Network terrestrial, it's worth a shot.
More wrestling coming up.
