Raw thoughts- 8/29/11

Last week, we heard from Kevin Nash about why he attacked C.M. Punk. We also saw Alberto Del Rio take out the new #1 Contender to his WWE Championship, John Cena. There will surely be fallout to all of this and more on Raw tonight. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

Nice WWWYKI signs.

I wonder how many people are in on that Twitter contest.

Smackdown stars on Raw tonight? Triple H can do that.

I'm pretty split on putting Smackdown stars on Raw. That feels a little backwards to me. Raw's already pretty crowded, and there aren't all that many Smackdown stars to cross-promote, so that roster could end up spread pretty thin compared to Raw. We'll see how it plays out over time, though.

Part of me wishes they would have started off with John Cena or Alberto Del Rio, since they closed the show last week. But this makes sense, too.

nWo music? Interesting. They mentioned that group on the website, too. That'd be pretty weird since they were anti-establishment in their own right. Then again, Vince McMahon brought them in 2002, and they aligned with Eric Bischoff in the WCW days.

I hope they're not building to HHH-Nash. The "use by" date on that one seems like it's passed. It makes sense from a story perspective, but takes the focus away from the current/upcoming stars (and the ones a lot of fans are more familiar with).

I see what they did there, referencing Nash's WCW contract. I think there might need to be a limit on how long ago you can pull a story from.

Again, how many people watching have any idea what the Kliq was?

Part of me likes the little inside jabs, but if Punk beats a guy that the fans turn the channel away from with bad knees, it isn't that big of a deal. And what if he loses to a guy with 20 years and plenty of surgeries on him?

Nice mix between corporate Triple H and the smarmy superstar.

Orton vs. Ziggler... might be cool. Could do big things for the U.S. Champion, though Orton needs to look strong going into his upcoming title match(es), too. I say Christian should be the reason Orton eats a Zig Zag.
Ziggler gets heat, Christian gets heat, and Orton gets his heat in the cage tomorrow night.

Nice promo for Smackdown. Triple H, John Cena, and C.M. Punk are pretty hot right now, and Smackdown could benefit from that rub.

They're kind of selling Ziggler short if they don't think he can kick out of a Superplex.

SUPERKICK!? Badass. He's growing.

If Smackdown vs. Raw means Orton RKOing everyone, I'm not feeling it. Ziggler got some elevation from a strong showing, though.

I guess theoretically Smackdown stars looking good against Raw stars means people will want to tune in on Fridays (and the occasional Tuesday). Maybe those Raw stars will cross over to try to get some revenge, and we'll get some movement between brands when it's beneficial for the talents. As long as this doesn't mean even less TV time for some of the up-and-comers, it could work out.

Why can't we get this Cena more?

Oh shi- this is a potentially big confrontation.

"Hey, Raw viewers, this dude's a big deal on Smackdown, and you should be watching him."

They should play up his list of victims more. Kane and Big Show are pretty big deals to take out.

Raw viewers should be watching this guy, too. Hopefully they're treated as a big deal here, as in being able to hang with the Raw guys.

Cena and Sheamus on the same page. Didn't expect to see that one.

In theory, it is pretty good to show these guys to the Raw audience.

Glad they addressed that the VP of talent relations doesn't have the authority make matches.

Punk vs. Miz? Damn, they're going through some pretty big matches lately. I hope both men have really bright futures in the company.

That Miz t-shirt's pretty cool.

These two continue to go up the ranks as stars. WWE continues to lay a foundation for when Mysterio, Kane, Show, Henry, Triple H, Undertaker, Nash, and so on aren't there to fall back on.

These guys are two of my favorites right now, if for some reason you can't tell.

I hope that Happy Madison movie is all a giant prank designed to spectacularly flop, like a modern day plot from "The Producers".

I thought Miz and Truth were going to be left for chumps there, but they got some of their credibility back once Nash came out.

Great job, fans cheering for Nash. You're why we can't have nice things. Then again, Punk's in a weird position as far as face/heel dynamics go.

Hopefully Raw stars return the favor by working on Smackdown this week so the crew isn't run ragged by the double-booking. Then again, they were probably going to work house shows if they weren't being used on TV. Hmm....

Well, the original Sin Cara was successful all over the world.

I'm really tired of the lighting.

Swagger and Cara, two other guys moving up the ranks. Cara has further to go given his relatively brief run in the company so far, but there are worse people to push as future stars.

A little bit of a clustermess, but it did what it was supposed to do. Very good show so far.

I was kind of hoping for a combined theme and entrance, but their songs are pretty awesome as is, so I'm ok with it.

"Air Boom" doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's a good combination of their personas.

If the people in the match are "boring", why should the fans tune into see them? Why shouldn't everyone just turn the channel? Why would they want the announcers to bury the talents? You don't see ice cream companies talking about how generic vanilla is as a flavor, because they're in the business of getting us to like vanilla ice cream.

I'm pulling for Otunga and McGillicutty. King might as well be the heel here.

Now, heeling Bucky Larson, that I'm all for. But that counts as publicity, sadly.

That backstage bit with the DOD came off rather unnatural.

Now I know how the people who dislike Cole as a heel feel. King's on overdrive.

Superstars music? Interesting.

Pretty awesome Orton trailer. I just caught the "Evolution" and "(Apex) Predator" references.

Cool video on Riley. I guess that counts as him getting TV time in a way.

Ugh. Khali.

Glad Sheamus is wearing bandages to sell his injury, though they're really hard to see.

Heck yeah, Irish Curse.

Great workers all over this match.

I thought for a brief second Christian was going to pin Cena, but of course that's not going down. The man who just lost to Cena's in a World Title cage match tomorrow.

Way, WAY too soon to do HHH/Punk. Hopefully there's something Laurinaitis or Stephanie does to put us back on track. Booking's been really shaky recently, trying to do too many big things at once and panicking when things aren't doing as well as hoped. I'm not so sure I like the rate this is going.

Haha, pales in comparison... Sheamus did get a boost standing tall with Cena.

That's all for Raw thoughts. I'll be back for NXT tomorrow and a news post will be up after midnight. Thanks for reading!
