Smackdown thoughts- 8/12/11

The biggest PPV of the summer is just 2 nights away. WWE COO Triple H will be in attendance tonight as we get the final build to that show. Randy Orton's about to face Christian in a No Holds Barred match on the card; what will go down between Champion and challenger tonight? All this and more on Smackdown. Read on for my thoughts on the show as it happens.

I picture Triple H entering board rooms with his music playing.

Interesting reactions for Punk and Cena.

I guess Trips doesn't care about NXT or Superstars.

Del Rio vs. Bryan's an interesting match to give away like that. People crossing brands should be treated as a bigger deal.

Hopefully Orton gets the win there.

Orton has Intermittent Explosive Disorder according to an angle a few years back.

I like this angle idea.

Christian and HHH play off of each other pretty well.

A babyface authority figure who doesn't take any crap from heels is pretty unique in wrestling, though some of that comes from knowing that HHH can probably hold his own against most of the people he deals with.

Christian's so great as a complaining heel. I miss the temper tantrums.

HHH's character doing things for the fans and business instead of his own agenda is nice. Trips is one of my all-time favorites, but his character shouldn't be the centerpiece of the company these days.

Sheamus is another guy Trips could bury on the mic if he wanted, but instead he's bringing him out as a tough challenge for the champion.

It's a shame(ful thing) that Smackdown's roster's so thin compared to Raw's so they have to give away Christian vs. Sheamus now instead of at a future PPV.

I love the Irish Curse backbreaker.

The ten clubs across the chest move (with the fans playing along) is another great move. His job's to connect with the crowd and that move does that.

I was expecting Triple H to come out and make him go back in the ring for that match. So I guess they're saving more of this for later after all.

I almost said that they should put Jinder Mahal in the main event as a handicap match, but that'd be hard to pull off. He's not believable going toe-to-toe with Orton, and he shouldn't be steamrolled over either.

Heel Natalya is scary.

AJ and Kaitlyn look like they're about to be fed to the wolves.

Ouch.

Kaitlyn's not really a princess type.

Double ouch. They just got killed.

Not sure why Booker wants a biscuit and some gravy, although that is pretty good. Maybe he misses Jesse and Festus?

Johnny Curtis gon' get his ass kicked. Johnny Curtis gon' get his wig split.

Hunico does look a little different from Cara. He seems more comfortable playing to the crowd as well.

Are they going to say he lost all that muscle when/if they switch back to the former Mistico? Could they really not wait another week to have him on TV?

Eee.. he seems a little uncomfortable or nervous here.

According to Wikipedia, Hunico is 35 lbs. heavier and 3 inches taller than Mistico. Not exactly a perfect double.

I thought there was a contract in the briefcase?

If Del Rio can cash in on the WWE Champion at any time, wouldn't the champions need to be at Smackdown?

Buckwheat pancakes need to be Photoshopped with the Little Rascal.

Bryan always seems to land on top of his opponent more so than hitting him.

Yeah, that didn't look so good for Bryan. I wish Barrett would have "hurt Bryan's shoulder" earlier in the night to set this up.

Bryan just got splatted, too. He's going to have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to look like he can beat Barrett (outside of a surprise finisher).

Booker's going to snap on that dude one day.

I do wonder why fans actually put the bags on (unless they're using plants).

Cole's too entertaining in his heel role for his own good (since we're supposed to be focused on the performers).

No way! Didn't see that one happening. I thought they had bigger things in store for Big Zeke after the story with the Corre. He should be getting set to move higher up the card (since there are only so many main event faces on Smackdown).

He did get to save some face after the match, though, so maybe this will work out well after all. Actually, maybe it leads to a face turn for DiBiase. Not so sure how well that one would work.

If they do recreate Austin/McMahon with Punk/HHH, I hope they make a new Corporation. Not sure who should be in it, though.

That entrance music is jobber-level. Wow.

Curtis looks bigger than he did on NXT.

That was ok I guess. Looks like we won't get to see how much Curtis had improved since NXT for at least another week.

Well, at least Curtis didn't get "put on the shelf" by Henry.

Good promo by Sheamus. He's doing well in his face role.

So much for taking Curtis too seriously. It's going to take some time for him to recover from that one.

I like the camera angle making Khali look huge.

Kind of weird that Khali doesn't use his own music, but they are trying to get Jinder over. And Jinder kind of owns Khali right now.

That Vise Grip spot was pretty cool.

But not as cool as that RKO spot. That was golden.

Fine ending I guess. Not a huge "I can't wait for Sunday" ending, though. I wonder if Edge will be involved since he'll be at AXXESS that weekend.

That's all for Smackdown. I'll be back Sunday for Summerslam. Thanks for reading!
