Smackdown thoughts- 8/30/11

Wait, isn't it a little early in the week for this? Raw was just last night! Well, WWE disagrees with me, so tonight we're getting a special edition of Smackdown. Four big matches have been made by COO Triple H: C.M. Punk faces off with The Great Khali in a battle of former World Champions; John Cena goes toe-to-toe with the former Nexus leader Wade Barrett; WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio faces the Mexican sensation Sin Cara; and Randy Orton defends the World Heavyweight Championship in a steel cage against Christian! It doesn't get much bigger than that, so after the break I'm jumping right into my thoughts on the show as it happens!

I expect some shenanigans in that contract signing.

I get a weird feeling we're in for a huge Divas tag match/battle royal later.

This is fun John Cena. It must be a Smackdown thing.

My Tuesday wasn't ready for Booker T..

If Ricardo can wrestle as well as he can talk, he'd be pretty interesting to see in the ring.

No Del Rio? Interesting. Maybe his work visa's still an issue.

Poor Chimel.

Barrett's stepping up to the plate here. He's a solid showing against a big star away from being a consistent main eventer (should they push him that way).

Great opening segment. Some of that Raw electricity found its way to Smackdown tonight.

Two main events? Even without Del Rio/Cara, there's Punk/Khali in addition to the cage match.

Even I'm thinking "5 Moves of Doom" during this sequence now.

So WWE's idea to boost Smackdown is to have one of its potential future main eventers lose to a Raw guy. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I like that they're pushing the cage match, but it's a stretch to put it in the danger category of Elimination Chamber and Hell in a Cell.

Bryan vs. Cara's kind of an interesting choice. They can both go, though.

Good match. I like the future for both of these guys.

Holy sh... heel Sin Cara!? Didn't see that one coming in the least. I can dig it, though.

Bourne, and particularly Kingston have noticeably grown as performers over their years in WWE.

This show just feels bigger tonight. I'm liking it.

Christian's damned good in his current role.

Oh... well then. By the way, Aksana dyed her hair. It's not a wig.

Hopefully Teddy Long doesn't have another heart attack.

Beth Phoenix in a mini-skirt? Interesting.

Yeah, had to figure it wouldn't be AJ or Kaitlyn. Maybe they're still "recovering" from the DOD thrashing a few weeks back.

Wait, what? They're giving away the Divas' Champion vs. her top contenders again? Less is more sometimes.

I do like that Phoenix looks different as a heel. Though that kind of looks more like something Kelly would wear. And pink doesn't really give off anti-Barbie doll vibes.

Wait, why do I get the crazy vibe that the blowoff to this whole angle is Aksana standing up to the DOD and winning the title?

Ohh, maybe AJ isn't on Smackdown because she's on NXT. They don't want to double-book people in the same night. This is also why you don't see many talents on both Raw or Smackdown and Superstars.

Anyone else remember when Teddy Long was overweight? He might as well be a different guy now.

Haha. Nice Sycho Sid sign.

Wow, commentators are really inconsistent lately. Cole's the heel defending the face, Punk? Keep it simple, WWE.

You know, he makes a point about a contract signing for a match that's already been booked.

Triple H also makes some good points.

Nice angle we got going here. Two of the best mic guys in the business. You know something's good when I pretty much sit back and let it happen.

Looks like more people are going to need to Google "skinny fat".

I'm intrigued with this. Big time. Triple threat?

"When worlds collide". I like it.

Jinder needs another match soon lest he become a background player again.

Well, that helps his credibility, too.

Sheamus stands strong. Mahal being important's still kind of a work in progress.

How many COOs are in movies?

Orton and Christian could probably make a Spelling Bee Match compelling.

I ALMOST said that was a Double C Spinebuster, but he's not Christian Cage anymore.

I can't be the only who cracks up at how Booker T says "Orton".

They're milking the whole paranormal thing these days.

I'm fine with Smackdown being on Fridays. I can sleep in the next day...

These guys have done just about everything there is to do to each other in the ring.

Looks like Smackdown's getting an over-run.

Looks like someone's getting run over.

Mark Henry's got to be the MVP of the Draft for Smackdown.

Pretty cool ending. NXT will have its own post shortly. Thanks for reading!
