WWE Summerslam preview

Tonight's one of the biggest events of the wrestling year, where we'll see the crowning of a unified WWE Champion and two competitors go no holds barred for the World Title. Not to mention the other title and grudge matches on the card. Read on for how I'd book the show.
First up, I think we need some more matches on this card. The Miz challenged Rey Mysterio in a recent interview, so if Rey's good to go I'll count that one. If he isn't able to compete tonight, Miz can face Kofi Kingston. Also, based on recent storylines, I'd add Alex Riley vs. Dolph Ziggler for the U.S. Title and the team of Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase vs. Ezekiel Jackson and the new Sin Cara.

We'll start with how I'd book that last one first, but not necessarily because I'd book it first. These aren't in too particular of an order. Anyway, Zeke's still ticked off about Friday (and understandably so), so he tries his damnedest to get his hands on Cody Rhodes. Rhodes is successful in getting DiBiase to take most of the punishment as he bails to avoid the ex-Champion. Sin Cara gets the pin on Ted as Ezekiel stares Rhodes down. In his championship rematch on a future edition of Smackdown, Zeke is once more screwed over by DiBiase's interference. He gets a one-on-one #1 Contenders' match with him, which Ted wins due to Rhodes' distraction and a steel chair. Zeke's furious and throws steps and chairs and what have you, but DiBiase gets the match at Night of Champions (where Rhodes wants him to lay down, but DiBiase grows a backbone). Zeke moves on to a feud with Tyson Kidd, who mocks him for his temper tantrums. Sin Cara feuds with the returning... Sin Cara after it's found out that he's not the same guy. Because seriously, they can't expect us to believe they're the same person. If they think Hunico's ready for the main roster, he can then compete as himself. If they think he needs more time, they can save him for NXT Season 6 or whenever.

Ziggler wants Vickie to interfere on his behalf, but they're still kind of uneasy so he has to bust his ass to get the win via a roll-up with his feet on the ropes. There's a #1 Contenders' match on a future Raw, with Riley, Swagger, Kingston, and Bourne. Riley gets taken out with a Zig Zag when the referee's focused on Kingston and Swagger being taken out by Bourne, and Bourne (who's unaware of the Zig Zag) earns the title match via Air Bourne. Bourne would go on to win the title after Vickie's interference backfires. Ziggler and Vickie argue more and more in the weeks to follow, and Triple H eventually intervenes. He's tired of hearing them bicker and decides to split them up, so he's putting Ziggler in a match. If Ziggler wins, he stays on Raw and Vickie goes to Smackdown. If he loses, it's the other way around. His opponent? Alex Riley, who wins when Vickie won't interfere. Ziggler goes to Smackdown to work an angle with Zack Ryder. Something tells me they'd have pretty good chemistry. They might even be able to make Ryder his partner if they think he's getting stale as a heel. Vickie leads her new business associate, Drew McIntyre, in his quest for the U.S. Title.

Miz vs. Mysterio's a trickier one to book since we don't know how well Rey will hold up. Miz should attack him again at some point in the match, continuing his "injury". If they think Rey can go for Night of Champions, the two of them should face off in a #1 Contenders' match for the WWE Title. If Kingston has to replace him, he gets that #1 Contenders' spot. Either way, Miz should come out to Rey's music on Monday in San Diego to rile up the crowd since Rey's "hurt". Rey won't appear on the broadcast, BUT the hometown crowd will still get Rey in the title match.

Bryan and Barrett show off what they can do. Bryan has the heart of a champion and surprises/outwrestles Barrett to get the win with the Labell Lock.

Kelly Kelly brings her A-game, but is no match for the Glamazon (who has Natalya in her corner). This leads to an angle where the DOD (which is kind of a silly name) cut promos on the Divas' division and being wrestlers instead of former models and the like. The other Divas counter about how much they've trained and so on and so forth. They legitimately get more training behind the scenes and hopefully over time improve to become legitimate threats to the duo (which should eventually add Tamina). They're the heels and everyone else in the division are faces looking to dethrone them. Beth faces Eve, who has a jiu-jitsu background and years worth of training, at Night of Champions. At some point, Goldust should be part of the angle as someone training the Divas (legitimately and as part of the angle). Primo can be involved as well, since he used to be AJ's boyfriend on NXT and that "motivated him" to be a Divas' trainer.

Sheamus vs. Mark Henry descends into a straight-up brawl. Sheamus shows the spirit of a warrior and is finally able to take Henry out with a Brogue Kick, but has difficulty standing after such a grueling match. It's not over between these two; they have a #1 Contenders' match at Night of Champions- Henry wants a rematch after the loss, and Sheamus, much like Finlay, loves to fight.

Randy Orton gets the advantage over Christian in their match, though the latter does everything in his power to escape and outsmart his challenger. He retains the championship with help from his new problem solver, Brodus Clay. He realized how tough Clay was after the ladder match with Del Rio, and hired him. Triple H isn't about to be outsmarted by this, and waves an opportunity at the gold in Brodus' face to make some tension between the two of them. At Night of Champions, we get Christian vs. Orton vs. Clay vs. The Great Khali. Khali's mainly there so it doesn't feel as stale. He wins his way in via a victory over Orton on Smackdown.

Finally, in the main event, C.M. Punk unifies the WWE Championship(s). Triple H reluctantly makes the count. I'd love Luke Gallows and/or Colt Cabana to distract the ref (even if he punches them out) so Punk can get the sneaky win, but if that's not doable, Punk can just win with a Pedigree. From here on out, Punk declares that his contract allows him to choose his challengers (because surely he needed a lot of perks to come back), so John Cena won't get a rematch. However, Cena's contract (which was signed first) grants him a rematch for "his" WWE Title, and Triple H rules in its favor. Punk would win at Night of Champions, and from there on out face Rey Mysterio (as another part of the WWE establishment) if he's available before moving on to challengers who don't get as much spotlight (Kingston, Morrison, Bourne, etc.).

So, there's how I'd do it. Later tonight I'll cover how it actually goes down, and the rest of the day's news. Thanks for reading!
