A wrestler lost a lawsuit to ESPN regarding the use of his likeness in footage they own. I don't see how he could have a case. They own that footage and his likeness in that footage. Legally, they should even be OK to use his image from stills from the show to promote it. Royalties might be a different matter and would depend on his contract with the old UWF.
TNA is still seeking a replacement for Taz at the announce booth. Mathews doing commentary by himself makes the show seem really barren. I wouldn't be shocked if TNA kept him doing it solo for cost reasons, but I think they'll at least try to get someone else in the Taz role.
Eric Young sang the national anthem at an NHL game, even though he's Canadian. Rusev and Lana were in attendance. They should have rushed the ring to do the Russian national anthem and started a WWE vs. TNA feud.
Everything else from yesterday is after the break.
TNA's Bob Ryder responded to Rampage Jackson burying the company. TNA paired Rampage with some of the top names in wrestling history as part of the MEM vs. Aces angle. He has nothing to be upset about.
WWE will soon have a Tyler Breeze action figure, which I would think mean he's going to be on the main roster sooner rather than later. We'll see. I think he's great for working with some of the names who are still getting acclimated to NXT.
Set for next week's NXT:
- Blake & Murphy vs. Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady in a non-title match
- Dana Brooke vs. Bayley
- Hideo Itami vs. Adam Rose
- Becky Lynch vs. Sarah Dobson
- Sami Zayn vs. Alex Riley
The build to the next Takeover special is in full effect.
Mojo Rawley is back in action after his surgery. I hope we see some improvement when he returns to the show.
Tim Zbyskzo tried out for the new season of Tough Enough. We'll see how that works out for him.
Samoa Joe met with Triple H about potentially coming to WWE. I'd love to see it, and so would a lot of others.
Jim Ross did some more voice-over work for WWE. I'm glad the two sides are working together more.
Smackdown's audience this week was 2.64 million. That's a good jump!
Some of WWE's main goals in 2015, according to a recent shareholders meeting, are to get more global subscribers to the WWE Network, get more revenue from international sources, and to do more in the realm of digital and social media. Note how none of that directly means "freshen up the roster and characters" or anything else from a Creative standpoint. They did mention innovating across all business endeavors, but I don't know what that really means.
Goldberg talked about working for WCW and WWE, as well as having one last match. As big of a deal as it would be for TNA or GFW or whomever to get him for his last match, I don't anticipate that happening.
NXT released former California indie name Tony Briggs after signing him in January 2014. I've never seen him wrestle, so I can't say if that was a loss on their end or not.
Update: They also released C. Denzel Freeman, which means we'll never get to see him have an acclaimed actor gimmick. Dang. He was a former collegiate wrestler.
Update: NXT released another four wrestlers: Courtney Freeman, Dustin Mueller, Leyvonna Zakari, and Laszlo Vandracsek. I can't say I've heard of any of them, and none had apparently even worked live events. Hopefully the recent signings will work out better for the company.
Dana White cemented his heel status by refusing to allow Ronda Rousey to wrestle for WWE. I can see why he wouldn't want his top draw working for the competition and potentially getting hurt when she could make him money instead. How about her being in Rock's corner opposite Stephanie in HHH's corner?
WWE put out an extensive list of potential DVDs for 2016. Some of that sounds great! I want to see them do the ones on Bischoff, Dreamer and Raven, and JBL for sure.
Here are notes from Mick Foley's recent show. Where the heck were the NXT names!?
For my take on yesterday's PWInsider.com questions:
1. This wasn't announced as part of their plans for the Network. There was some kind of error on Wikipedia's end with that.
2. I can't disagree with them there. I think he can still be great without risking an involuntary early retirement. It's ridiculous to suggest he'd "make himself mediocre" and would only prolong his career a little if he stopped taking dangerous bumps. He just needs to be smarter about his style. It's worth noting Mankind with Mr. Socko was more successful than Cactus Jack killing himself with big bumps and hardcore matches.
3. How many times can this be asked!? I don't know how much that would really add to things if the current audience doesn't know or care who he is. And who's to say Koloff would even be interested? He's a minister now. Interestingly, where Koloff now lives is really close to where Vince went to college.
4. This has also been asked. WTH, indeed. They should have actually no-sold this question by not answering it.
Nothing to add to 5.
More wrestling tomorrow.
