Read on for my thoughts on last night's TNA PPV.
Great to see TNA acknowledge past stars. They haven't always been amazing, but I'm definitely glad they've lasted this long as another place for talented performers to work. Hopefully if they do fade away, other companies will be able to fill that void. Having a two-hour wrestling show on (sort of) national TV is nothing to scoff at. That won't be replicated overnight.
- Tigre Uno vs. DJ Z vs. Manik:
Enjoyable opening match. Having some matches like this here and there is fine.
All three competitors are bringing their "A" games.
Slammiversary trending worldwide is nice and all, but all that means is more people are using that term on Twitter than usual. It's not a word that would see any use outside of talking about this PPV, so a large increase during the show isn't really that much of a surprise.
If any of these people are able to go to another promotion soon, I think they'd be worth looking at for NXT.
One thing I do hate about the X-Division/ROH "crash and burn" style is so many moves have become meaningless because they don't lead to a victory. Kicking out of two frog splashes by RVD or Eddie Guerrero would be a HUGE deal. Here, it's just another spot.
Good match overall.
I was mostly impressed by Robbie E. I do love his goofy character, so him being serious is a bit of a letdown.
- Jessie Godderz vs. Robbie E:
I loved Jessie's opening promo. I'd love for him to become a Scott Steiner-like character.
I'm glad these two are having a fight instead of a wrestling match. This should be personal.
This match has been better than I expected. They work against each other well.
I was a bit surprised by that outcome. I'm guessing the feud will continue. Jessie has been positioned to look like a potential monster heel, but he's been bested by Robbie multiple times. That kills his momentum in some ways. Unless this ends with Robbie and/or DJ Z doing a stretcher job, I think it will pretty much keep the former Bro-Mans as lower-card names we can't take as serious title contenders. With top names out the door, that's not what TNA wants.
Nice Matt Hardy promo. I like him a good deal.
- Matt Morgan vs. Bram:
I love how Morgan unintentionally buried himself by saying no one wanted to see him come back to wrestle. That's true for a lot of TNA die-hards.
Morgan was the one who wanted the hardcore match, but Bram's the one going for all the weapons. I don't know how well Morgan thought that one out.
Not a terrible match, I guess. Morgan seemed kind of rusty, but that could have been because this was kind of a hybrid of Morgan doing wrestling moves and Bram being the hardcore one. They didn't work particularly smoothly as a result. I'm guessing Bram didn't find whatever weapon he was supposed to use.
Based EC3. I wish I could start a "Next World Champ" chant via text.
- Austin Aries vs. Davey Richards:
I guess Aries is thinking the sooner he gets counted out, the sooner he can be free from his contract.
Pretty good action between the two veterans. It's good to use some submissions here and there to slow the pace. The match being a big blur doesn't do anything for it being memorable.
That ending added heat to Match 5, but they just had the guy who just signed a new contract job to the guy who's headed for the hills.
You'd think the Dirty Heels would want a match where they could pull the most shenanigans? The Bra and Panties reference was hilarious, though.
Eric Young holding three different championships with the same physical belt would be funny. It's the belt that keeps on giving. They should have it change hands every week and be given a new name each time.
- Dollhouse vs. Awesome Kong and Brooke:
I liked this match overall, if it was somewhat predictable. Wednesday's match should really be something.
Really good Magnus promo. He'll be missed if he doesn't come back for the July tapings.
- James Storm vs. Magnus:
Nice brawl early. This should be a barnburner.
This has definitely been crazy. They're going all out. It's reminiscent of the FSN/early Spike days with their wild brawls.
BAH GAWD WHAT A WAR. Enjoyable stuff.
Good false finish with the powder spot. This kind of drama is what makes wrestling great.
That was a hell of a finish to a hell of a match. I hope what's already been taped isn't the last we see of these two in a major promotion.
Fine Galloway promo. I'm interested to see where The Rising and BDC go from here.
It wouldn't be a true celebration of TNA's history without a colossal f*ck-up. I kind of hope it's a rib on Management by the production team due to their pay issues.
- Ethan Carter III/Tyrus vs. Mr. Anderson/Lashley:
Lashley is a really great talent. I like him as the TNA version of Brock Lesnar.
Not a bad match, just a little short because of the production issues.
- King of the Mountain match:
Ahh, a good clustermess main event. Just like old times.
Jeff Jarrett sitting back and watching the TNA employees fight it out is probably a good move at this point in his career. Maybe he was figuring out who he'd like to sign to GFW first?
I missed seeing Jeff wrestle.
Nice job by EY to get the pin. Double J's going to be nice and rested while everyone else fights it out. That should make getting a pin easier.
Not a bad sequence leading to pinfall numbers three and four.
Jarrett's more or less putting everyone else over by being out of the match or ineffective for most of it.
Nice Team Canada nod, although these two were in a big feud not that long ago.
Man, Jarrett's really out of luck in this match.
I hope Karen brought a lot of GFW guitars leading to Jarrett smashing a lot of the TNA roster as some people defect and join him. They might as well book the biggest clusterf*ck in TNA history.
This match has been pretty fun. It's good to see people wanting to actually win the match and title.
Nice moment for Jeff Jarrett. The other performers shined, too. I'm guessing this sets up some kind of TNA/GFW angle. As it should. That could be pretty interesting.
More wrestling coming up.
